Holographic dense QCD in the Veneziano limit

Solving the properties of dense QCD matter is an extremely challenging problem because standard theoretical tools do not work at intermediate densities. The gauge/gravity duality may help to provide answers in this region. I give a brief review of recent progress in this field, focusing on the V-QCD model, which is one of the most sophisticated holographic models of QCD. I discuss predictions for the phase diagram, the equation of state, and properties of baryons. I apply these results to analyze the properties of neutron stars and to quark matter production in neutron star mergers.

Holographic modeling of nuclear matter and neutron stars

I review holographic models for (dense and cold) nuclear matter, neutron stars, and their mergers. I start by a brief general discussion on current knowledge of cold QCD matter and neutron stars, and go on discussing various approaches to model cold nuclear and quark matter by using gauge/gravity duality, pointing out their strengths and weaknesses. Then I focus on recent results for a complex bottom-up holographic framework (V-QCD), which also takes input from lattice QCD results, effective field theory, and perturbative QCD. Dense nuclear matter is modeled in V-QCD through a homogeneous non-Abelian bulk gauge field. Feasible "hybrid" equations of state for cold nuclear (and quark) matter can be constructed by using traditional methods (e.g., effective field theory) at low densities and the holographic V-QCD model at higher densities. I discuss the constraints from this approach to the properties of the nuclear to quark matter transition as well as to properties of neutron stars. Using such hybrid equations of state as an input for numerical simulations of neutron star mergers, I also derive predictions for the spectrum of produced gravitational waves.

Inverse Anisotropic Catalysis in Holographic QCD

We investigate the effects of anisotropy on the chiral condensate in a holographic model of QCD with a fully backreacted quark sector at vanishing chemical potential. The high temperature deconfined phase is a neutral and anisotropic plasma showing different pressure gradients along different spatial directions, similar to the state produced in noncentral heavy-ion collisions. We find that the chiral transition occurs at a lower temperature in the presence of anisotropy. Equivalently, we find that anisotropy acts destructively on the chiral condensate near the transition temperature. These are precisely the same footprints as the "inverse magnetic catalysis" i.e. the destruction of the condensate with increasing magnetic field observed earlier on the lattice, in effective field theory models and in holography. Based on our findings we suggest, in accordance with the conjecture of [1], that the cause for the inverse magnetic catalysis may be the anisotropy caused by the presence of the magnetic field instead of the charge dynamics created by it. We conclude that the weakening of the chiral condensate due to anisotropy is more general than that due to a magnetic field and we coin the former "inverse anisotropic catalysis". Finally, we observe that any amount of anisotropy changes the IR physics substantially: the geometry is $\text{AdS}_4 \times \mathbb{R}$ up to small corrections, confinement is present only up to a certain scale, and the particles acquire finite widths.

Transport in strongly coupled quark matter

Motivated by the possible presence of deconfined quark matter in neutron stars and their mergers and the important role of transport phenomena in these systems, we perform the first-ever systematic study of different viscosities and conductivities of dense quark matter using the gauge/gravity duality. Utilizing the V-QCD model, we arrive at results that are in qualitative disagreement with the predictions of perturbation theory, which highlights the differing transport properties of the system at weak and strong coupling and calls for caution in the use of the perturbative results in neutron-star applications.

Late time behavior of non-conformal plasmas

We determine analytically the dependence of the approach to thermal equilibrium of strongly coupled plasmas on the breaking of scale invariance. The theories we consider are the holographic duals to Einstein gravity coupled to a scalar with an exponential potential. The coefficient in the exponent, $X$, is the parameter that controls the deviation from the conformally invariant case. For these models we obtain analytic solutions for the plasma expansion in the late-time limit, under the assumption of boost-invariance, and we determine the scaling behaviour of the energy density, pressure, and temperature as a function of time. We find that the temperature decays as a function of proper time as $T\sim τ^{-s/4}$ with $s$ determined in terms of the non-conformality parameter $X$ as $s=4(1-4X^2)/3$. This agrees with the result of Janik and Peschanski, $s=4/3$, for the conformal plasmas and generalizes it to non-conformal plasmas with $X\neq 0$. We also consider more realistic potentials where the exponential is supplemented by power-law terms. Even though in this case we cannot have exact solutions, we are able under certain assumptions to determine the scaling of the energy, that receives logarithmic corrections.

Massive holographic QCD in the Veneziano limit

QCD at finite, flavor independent quark mass is analyzed by using bottom-up holography in the Veneziano limit, where the backreaction of quarks to the gluon dynamics is fully included. The dependence on the quark mass of observables such as the bound state masses, the chiral condensate, the S-parameter, and the critical temperatures is studied. Many of the results are argued to be universal, i.e., independent of the details of the holographic model, and compared to explicit computations in the V-QCD models. The effect of adding four-fermion operators in QCD is also discussed.

Recent progress in backreacted bottom-up holographic QCD

Recent progress in constructing holographic models for QCD is discussed, concentrating on the bottom-up models which implement holographically the renormalization group flow of QCD. The dynamics of gluons can be modeled by using a string-inspired model termed improved holographic QCD, and flavor can be added by introducing space filling branes in this model. The flavor fully backreacts to the glue in the Veneziano limit, giving rise to a class of models which are called V-QCD. The phase diagrams and spectra of V-QCD are in good agreement with results for QCD obtained by other methods.

Constraints on Majorana Dark Matter from a Fourth Lepton Family

We study the possibility of dark matter in the form of heavy neutrinos from a fourth lepton family with helicity suppressed couplings such that dark matter is produced thermally via annihilations in the early Universe. We present all possible constraints for this scenario coming from LHC and collider physics, underground direct detectors, neutrino telescopes, and indirect astrophysical searches. Although we embed the WIMP candidate within a model of composite dynamics, the majority of our results are model independent and applicable to all models where heavy neutrinos with suppressed couplings account for the dark matter abundance.

Fluctuations and instabilities of a holographic metal

We analyze the quasinormal modes of the D2-D8' model of 2+1-dimensional, strongly-coupled, charged fermions in a background magnetic field and at nonzero density. The model is known to include a quantum Hall phase with integer filling fraction. As expected, we find a hydrodynamical diffusion mode at small momentum and the nonzero-temperature holographic zero sound, which becomes massive above a critical magnetic field. We confirm the previously-known thermodynamic instability. In addition, we discover an instability at low temperature, large mass, and in a charge density and magnetic field range near the quantum Hall phase to an inhomogeneous striped phase.

Moduli space of supersymmetric QCD in the Veneziano limit

We study the moduli space of 4d N=1 supersymmetric QCD in the Veneziano limit using Hilbert series. In this limit, the numbers of colours and flavours are taken to be large with their ratio fixed. It is shown that the Hilbert series, which is a partition function of an ensemble of gauge invariant quantities parametrising the moduli space, can also be realised as a partition function of a system of interacting Coulomb gas in two dimensions. In the electrostatic equilibrium, exact and asymptotic analyses reveal that such a system exhibits two possible phases. Physical quantities, such as charge densities, free energies, and Hilbert series, associated with each phase, are computed explicitly and discussed in detail. We then demonstrate the existence of the third order phase transition in this system.

The discontinuities of conformal transitions and mass spectra of V-QCD

Zero temperature spectra of mesons and glueballs are analyzed in a class of holographic bottom-up models for QCD in the Veneziano limit, N_c -> infinity, N_f -> infinity, with x = N_f/N_c fixed (V-QCD). The backreaction of flavor on color is fully included. It is found that spectra are discrete and gapped (modulo the pions) in the QCD regime, for x below the critical value x_c where the conformal transition takes place. The masses uniformly converge to zero in the walking region x -> x_c^- due to Miransky scaling. All the ratios of masses asymptote to non-zero constants as x -> x_c^- and therefore there is no "dilaton" in the spectrum. The S-parameter is computed and found to be of O(1) in units of N_f N_c in the walking regime, while it is always an increasing function of x. This indicates the presence of a subtle discontinuity of correlation functions across the conformal transition at x = x_c.

The spectrum of (h)QCD in the Veneziano limit

In this note we report on the analysis of the zero temperature spectra of glueballs and mesons for holographic QCD in the Veneziano limit. We work within a holographic bottom-up model named V-QCD which takes into account the full backreaction of the flavor degrees of freedom. By studying the fluctuations of this model we compute spectra of mesons and glueballs as a function of x=N_f/N_c. The spectra are discrete and gapped (modulo the pions) in the QCD regime, where x is below the critical value x_c at which the conformal transition takes place. The masses uniformly converge to zero in the walking region x -> x_c following Miransky scaling. Moreover, all the ratios of masses asymptote to finite constants as x -> x_c. Therefore there is no "dilaton" in the spectrum. Finally, we compute the S-parameter, which is found to be of O(1) in the walking regime.

Boosting equal time bound states

We present an explicit and exact boost of a relativistic bound state defined at equal time of the constituents in the Born approximation (lowest order in hbar). To this end, we construct the Poincaré generators of QED and QCD in D=1+1 dimensions, using Gauss' law to express A^0 in terms of the fermion fields in A^1=0 gauge. We determine the fermion-antifermion bound states in the Born approximation as eigenstates of the time and space translation generators P^0 and P^1. The boost operator is combined with a gauge transformation so as to maintain the gauge condition A^1=0 in the new frame. We verify that the boosted state remains an eigenstate of P^0 and P^1 with appropriately transformed eigenvalues and determine the transformation law of the equal-time, relativistic wave function. The shape of the wave function is independent of the CM momentum when expressed in terms of a variable, which is quadratically related to the distance x between the fermions. As a consequence, the Lorentz contraction of the wave function is proportional to 1/(E-V(x)) and thus depends on x via the linear potential V(x).

Fluctuations of a holographic quantum Hall fluid

We analyze the neutral spectrum of the holographic quantum Hall fluid described by the D2-D8' model. As expected for a quantum Hall state, we find the system to be stable and gapped and that, at least over much of the parameter space, the lowest excitation mode is a magneto-roton. In addition, we find magneto-rotons in higher modes as well. We show that these magneto-rotons are direct consequences of level crossings between vector and scalar modes.

V-QCD: Spectra, the dilaton and the S-parameter

Zero temperature spectra of mesons and glueballs are analyzed in a class of holographic bottom-up models for QCD (named V-QCD), as a function of x = N_f/N_c with the full back-reaction included. It is found that spectra are discrete and gapped (modulo the pions) in the QCD regime, for x below the critical value x_c where the conformal transition takes place. The masses uniformly converge to zero in the walking region x -> x_c due to Miransky scaling. The ratio of masses all asymptote to non-zero constants as x -> x_c and therefore there is no "dilaton" in the spectrum. The S-parameter is computed and found to be of O(1) in the walking regime.

A holographic quantum Hall model at integer filling

We construct a holographic model of a system of strongly-coupled fermions in 2+1 dimensions based on a D8-brane probe in the background of D2-branes. The Minkowski embeddings of the D8-brane represent gapped quantum Hall states with filling fraction one. By computing the conductivity and phase structure, we find results qualitatively similar to the experimental observations and also to the recent D3-D7' model.

Holographic Models for QCD in the Veneziano Limit

We construct a class of bottom-up holographic models with physics comparable to the one expected from QCD in the Veneziano limit of large N_f and N_c with fixed x = N_f/N_c. The models capture the holographic dynamics of the dilaton (dual to the YM coupling) and a tachyon (dual to the chiral condensate), and are parametrized by the real parameter x, which can take values within the range 0 <= x < 11/2. We analyze the saddle point solutions, and draw the phase diagram at zero temperature and density. The backreaction of flavor on the glue is fully included. We find the conformal window for x >= x_c, and the QCD-like phase with chiral symmetry breaking at x < x_c, where the critical value x_c lies close to four. We also find Miransky scaling as x -> x_c as well as Efimov-like saddle points. By calculating the holographic beta-functions, we demonstrate the "walking" behavior of the coupling in the region near and below x_c.

Vanilla Technicolor at Linear Colliders

We analyze the reach of Linear Colliders (LC)s for models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking. We show that LCs can efficiently test the compositeness scale, identified with the mass of the new spin-one resonances, till the maximum energy in the center-of-mass of the colliding leptons. In particular we analyze the Drell-Yan processes involving spin-one intermediate heavy bosons decaying either leptonically or into two Standard Model (SM) gauge bosons. We also analyze the light Higgs production in association with a SM gauge boson stemming also from an intermediate spin-one heavy vector.

Electrostatics of Coulomb gas, lattice paths, and discrete polynuclear growth

We study the partition function of a two-dimensional Coulomb gas on a circle, in the presence of external pointlike charges, in a double scaling limit where both the external charges and the number of gas particles are large. Our original motivation comes from studying amplitudes for multi-string emission from a decaying D-brane in the high energy limit. We analyze the scaling limit of the partition function and calculate explicit results. We also consider applications to random matrix theory. The partition functions can be related to random scattering, or to weights of lattice paths in certain growth models. In particular, we consider the discrete polynuclear growth model and use our results to compute the cumulative probability density for the height of long level-1 paths. We also obtain an estimate for an almost certain maximum height.

Electroweak phase transition in technicolor

Several phenomenologically viable walking technicolor models have been proposed recently. I demonstrate that these models can have first order electroweak phase transitions, which are sufficiently strong for electroweak baryogenesis. Strong dynamics can also lead to several separate transitions at the electroweak scale, with the possibility of a temporary restoration and an extra breaking of the electroweak symmetry. First order phase transitions will produce gravitational waves, which may be detectable at future experiments.

Extreme Technicolor & The Walking Critical Temperature

We map the phase diagram of gauge theories of fundamental interactions in the flavor-temperature plane using chiral perturbation theory to estimate the relation between the pion decaying constant and the critical temperature above which chiral symmetry is restored. We then investigate the impact of our results on models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking and therefore on the electroweak early universe phase transition.

High-energy asymptotics of D-brane decay amplitudes from Coulomb gas electrostatics

We study the high-energy limit of tree-level string production amplitudes from decaying D-branes in bosonic string theory, interpreting the vertex operators as external charges interacting with a Coulomb gas corresponding to the rolling tachyon background, and performing an electrostatic analysis. In particular, we consider two open string - one closed string amplitudes and four open string amplitudes, and calculate explicit formulas for the leading exponential behavior.

Electrostatics approach to closed string pair production from a decaying D-brane

We consider the emission of two closed string tachyons from a decaying Dp-brane in bosonic string theory. We study the high energy limit of the emission amplitude by using an analogue to electrostatics. The case where the emitted strings have equal energies is analyzed in detail, and we obtain a relatively simple result for the emission amplitude. We identify expected poles for s- and t-channel emission. In the high energy limit, the amplitude decays exponentially (~e^{-2πω}) or faster in the energies ωof the closed strings.

Holographic Conformal Window - A Bottom Up Approach

We propose a five-dimensional framework for modeling the background geometry associated to ordinary Yang-Mills (YM) as well as to nonsupersymmetric gauge theories possessing an infrared fixed point with fermions in various representations of the underlying gauge group. The model is based on the improved holographic approach, on the string theory side, and on the conjectured all-orders beta function for the gauge theory one. We first analyze the YM gauge theory. We then investigate the effects of adding flavors and show that, in the holographic description of the conformal window, the geometry becomes AdS when approaching the ultraviolet and the infrared regimes. As the number of flavors increases within the conformal window we observe that the geometry becomes more and more of AdS type over the entire energy range.

Linear confinement without dilaton in bottom-up holography for walking technicolour

In PRD78(2008)055005 [arXiv:0805.1503 [hep-ph]] and PRD79(2009)075004 [arXiv:0809.1324 [hep-ph]], we constructed a holographic description of walking technicolour theories using both a hard- and a soft-wall model. Here, we show that the dilaton field becomes phenomenologically irrelevant for the spectrum of spin-one resonances once a term is included in the Lagrangian that mixes the Goldstone bosons and the longitudinal components of the axial vector mesons. We show how this mixing affects our previous results and we make predictions about how this description of technicolour can be tested.

Winding effects on brane/anti-brane pairs

We study a brane/anti-brane configuration which is separated along a compact direction by constructing a tachyon effective action which takes into account transverse scalars. Such an action is relevant in the study of HQCD model of Sakai and Sugimoto of chiral symmetry breaking, where the size of the compact circle sets the confinement scale. Our approach is motivated by string theory orbifold constructions and gives a route to model inhomogeneous tachyon decay. We illustrate the techniques involved with a relatively simple example of a harmonic oscillator on a circle. We will then repeat the analysis for the Sakai-Sugimoto model and show that by integrating out the winding modes will provide us with a renormalized action with a lower energy than that of truncating to zero winding sector.

Perturbative gauge theory in a background

Motivated by the gluon condensate in QCD we study the perturbative expansion of a gauge theory in the presence of gauge bosons of vanishing momentum, in the specific case of an abelian theory. The background is characterised by a dimensionful parameter $Λ$ affecting only the on-shell prescription of the free (abelian) gluon propagator. When summed to all orders in $gΛ$ the modification is equivalent to evaluating standard Green functions in a pure gauge field with an imaginary gauge parameter $\propto Λ$. We show how to calculate the corresponding dressed Green functions, which are Poincare and gauge covariant. We evaluate the expressions for the dressed quark and $q \bar q$ propagators, imposing as boundary condition that they approach the standard perturbative form in the short-distance limit ($|p^2|\to\infty$). The on-shell ($p^2=m^2$) pole of the free quark propagator is removed for any $Λ> 0$, and replaced by a discontinuity which vanishes exponentially with $p^2$. The dressing introduces an effective interaction between quarks and antiquarks which is enhanced at low relative 3-momentum. Further study should allow to identify the (bound) eigenstates of propagation and determine whether they define a unitary S-matrix. When the quark mass is zero there is a euclidean propagator solution which breaks chiral symmetry spontaneously. We study some aspects of the massless pion contribution to axial vector correlators and derive the $πq \bar q$ form factor.

Single Spin Asymmetry at Large x_F and k_T

The large single spin asymmetries observed at high momentum fractions x_F and transverse momenta k_T in p^\uparrow p -> π(x_F,k_T)+X as well as in pp -> Λ^\uparrow(x_F,k_T)+X suggest that soft helicity flip processes are coherent with hard scattering. Such coherence can be maintained if x_F -> 1 as k_T -> \infty, while k_T^2(1-x_F) \sim Λ_QCD^2 stays fixed. The entire hadron wave function, rather than a single quark, then contributes to the scattering process. Analogous coherence effects have been seen experimentally in the Drell-Yan process at high x_F. We find that the p^\uparrow p -> π(x_F,k_T)+X production amplitudes have large dynamic phases and that helicity flip contributions are unsuppressed in this limit, giving rise to potentially large single spin asymmetries.
