An Operator Product Expansion for Form Factors III. Finite Coupling and Multi-Particle Contributions

Form factors in planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory have a dual description in terms of periodic Wilson loops. This duality maps the multi-collinear expansion of the former to an operator product expansion of the latter. The coefficients of this expansion are decomposed in terms of several elementary building blocks and can be determined at finite 't Hooft coupling using bootstrap and integrability techniques. Some of these blocks are known from an analogous expansion of scattering amplitudes. In addition to these, the expansion for form factors includes a new type of building block, called {\it form factor transitions}, that encode information about the local operator. In the present paper, we consider the form factor of the chiral part of the stress-tensor supermultiplet. We bootstrap the corresponding form factor transitions of two-particle flux-tube states and use them to predict the leading term in the collinear expansion at finite coupling. The transitions we find can be expressed in terms of a quantity that previously appeared in a seemingly unrelated context, namely the octagon kernel. Lastly, we use a factorized ansatz to determine the multi-particle form factor transitions at finite coupling, which we use to predict the first subleading term in the collinear expansion. A perfect match is found between our predictions and the available perturbative data.

Functions Beyond Multiple Polylogarithms for Precision Collider Physics

Feynman diagrams constitute one of the essential ingredients for making precision predictions for collider experiments. Yet, while the simplest Feynman diagrams can be evaluated in terms of multiple polylogarithms -- whose properties as special functions are well understood -- more complex diagrams often involve integrals over complicated algebraic manifolds. Such diagrams already contribute at NNLO to the self-energy of the electron, $t \bar{t}$ production, $γγ$ production, and Higgs decay, and appear at two loops in the planar limit of maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. This makes the study of these more complicated types of integrals of phenomenological as well as conceptual importance. In this white paper contribution to the Snowmass community planning exercise, we provide an overview of the state of research on Feynman diagrams that involve special functions beyond multiple polylogarithms, and highlight a number of research directions that constitute essential avenues for future investigation.

Solving the Hagedorn temperature of AdS5/CFT4 via the Quantum Spectral Curve: Chemical potentials and deformations

We describe how to calculate the Hagedorn temperature of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory and type IIB superstring theory on $AdS_5\times S^5$ via the Quantum Spectral Curve (QSC) -- providing further details on our previous letters 1706.03074 and 1803.04416. We solve the QSC equations perturbatively at weak 't Hooft coupling $λ$ up to seven-loop order and numerically at finite coupling, finding that the perturbative results can be expressed in terms of single-valued harmonic polylogarithms. Moreover, we generalize the QSC to describe the Hagedorn temperature in the presence of chemical potentials. Finally, we show that the Hagedorn temperature in certain deformations of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory (real-$β$ and $γ_i$ deformation) agrees with the one in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory at any value of $λ$.

The elliptic double box and symbology beyond polylogarithms

We study the elliptic double-box integral, which contributes to generic massless QFTs and is the only contribution to a particular 10-point scattering amplitude in N=4 SYM theory. Based on a Feynman parametrization, we express this integral in terms of elliptic polylogarithms. We then study its symbol, finding a rich structure and remarkable similarity with the non-elliptic case. In particular, the first entry of the symbol is expressible in terms of logarithms of dual-conformal cross-ratios, and elliptic letters only occur in the last two entries. Moreover, the symbol makes manifest a differential equation relating the double-box integral to a 6D hexagon integral, suggesting that it can be bootstrapped based on the latter integral alone.

A Three-Point Form Factor Through Five Loops

We bootstrap the three-point form factor of the chiral part of the stress-tensor supermultiplet in planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory, obtaining new results at three, four, and five loops. Our construction employs known conditions on the first, second, and final entries of the symbol, combined with new multiple-final-entry conditions, ``extended-Steinmann-like'' conditions, and near-collinear data from the recently-developed form factor operator product expansion. Our results are expected to give the maximally transcendental parts of the $gg\to Hg$ and $H\to ggg$ amplitudes in the heavy-top limit of QCD. At two loops, the extended-Steinmann-like space of functions we describe contains all transcendental functions required for four-point amplitudes with one massive and three massless external legs, and all massless internal lines, including processes such as $gg\to Hg$ and $γ^*\to q\bar{q}g$. We expect the extended-Steinmann-like space to contain these amplitudes at higher loops as well, although not to arbitrarily high loop order. We present evidence that the planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ three-point form factor can be placed in an even smaller space of functions, with no independent $ζ$ values at weights two and three.

An Operator Product Expansion for Form Factors II. Born level

Form factors in planar N=4 Super-Yang-Mills theory admit a type of non-perturbative operator product expansion (OPE), as we have recently shown in arXiv:2009.11297. This expansion is based on a decomposition of the dual periodic Wilson loop into elementary building blocks: the known pentagon transitions and a new object that we call form factor transition, which encodes the information about the local operator. In this paper, we compute the two-particle form factor transitions for the chiral part of the stress-tensor supermultiplet at Born level; they yield the leading contribution to the OPE. To achieve this, we explicitly construct the Gubser-Klebanov-Polyakov two-particle singlet states. The resulting transitions are then used to test the OPE against known perturbative data and to make higher-loop predictions.

Embedding Feynman Integral (Calabi-Yau) Geometries in Weighted Projective Space

It has recently been demonstrated that Feynman integrals relevant to a wide range of perturbative quantum field theories involve periods of Calabi-Yaus of arbitrarily large dimension. While the number of Calabi-Yau manifolds of dimension three or higher is considerable (if not infinite), those relevant to most known examples come from a very simple class: degree-$2k$ hypersurfaces in $k$-dimensional weighted projective space $\mathbb{WP}^{1,\ldots,1,k}$. In this work, we describe some of the basic properties of these spaces and identify additional examples of Feynman integrals that give rise to hypersurfaces of this type. Details of these examples at three and four loops are included as ancillary files to this work.

A Quantum Framework for AdS/dCFT through Fuzzy Spherical Harmonics on $S^4$

We consider a non-supersymmetric domain-wall version of $\mathcal{N} = 4$ SYM theory where five out of the six scalar fields have non-zero classical values on one side of a wall of codimension one. The classical fields have commutators which constitute an irreducible representation of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{so}(5)$ leading to a highly non-trivial mixing between color and flavor components of the quantum fields. Making use of fuzzy spherical harmonics on $S^4$, we explicitly solve the mixing problem and derive not only the spectrum of excitations at the quantum level but also the propagators of the original fields needed for perturbative quantum computations. As an application, we derive the one-loop one-point function of a chiral primary and find complete agreement with a supergravity prediction of the same quantity in a double-scaling limit which involves a limit of large instanton number in the dual D3-D7 probe-brane setup.

Rooting Out Letters: Octagonal Symbol Alphabets and Algebraic Number Theory

It is widely expected that NMHV amplitudes in planar, maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory require symbol letters that are not rationally expressible in terms of momentum-twistor (or cluster) variables starting at two loops for eight particles. Recent advances in loop integration technology have made this an `experimentally testable' hypothesis: compute the amplitude at some kinematic point, and see if algebraic symbol letters arise. We demonstrate the feasibility of such a test by directly integrating the most difficult of the two-loop topologies required. This integral, together with its rotated image, suffices to determine the simplest NMHV component amplitude: the unique component finite at this order. Although each of these integrals involve algebraic symbol alphabets, the combination contributing to this amplitude is---surprisingly---rational. We describe the steps involved in this analysis, which requires several novel tricks of loop integration and also a considerable degree of algebraic number theory. We find dramatic and unusual simplifications, in which the two symbols initially expressed as almost ten million terms in over two thousand letters combine in a form that can be written in five thousand terms and twenty-five letters.

Rationalizing Loop Integration

We show that direct Feynman-parametric loop integration is possible for a large class of planar multi-loop integrals. Much of this follows from the existence of manifestly dual-conformal Feynman-parametric representations of planar loop integrals, and the fact that many of the algebraic roots associated with (e.g. Landau) leading singularities are automatically rationalized in momentum-twistor space---facilitating direct integration via partial fractioning. We describe how momentum twistors may be chosen non-redundantly to parameterize particular integrals, and how strategic choices of coordinates can be used to expose kinematic limits of interest. We illustrate the power of these ideas with many concrete cases studied through four loops and involving as many as eight particles. Detailed examples are included as ancillary files to this work's submission to the arXiv.

One-loop Wilson loops and the particle-interface potential in AdS/dCFT

We initiate the calculation of quantum corrections to Wilson loops in a class of four-dimensional defect conformal field theories with vacuum expectation values based on N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. Concretely, we consider an infinite straight Wilson line, obtaining explicit results for the one-loop correction to its expectation value in the large-N limit. This allows us to extract the particle-interface potential of the theory. In a further double-scaling limit, we compare our results to those of a previous calculation in the dual string-theory set-up consisting of a D5-D3 probe-brane system with flux, and we find perfect agreement.

Two-point functions in AdS/dCFT and the boundary conformal bootstrap equations

We calculate the leading contributions to the connected two-point functions of protected scalar operators in the defect version of N=4 SYM theory which is dual to the D5-D3 probe-brane system with k units of background gauge field flux. This involves several types of two-point functions which are vanishing in the theory without the defect, such as two-point functions of operators of unequal conformal dimension. We furthermore exploit the operator product expansion (OPE) and the boundary operator expansion (BOE), which form the basis of the boundary conformal bootstrap equations, to extract conformal data both about the defect CFT and about N=4 SYM theory without the defect. From the knowledge of the one- and two-point functions of the defect theory, we extract certain structure constants of N=4 SYM theory using the (bulk) OPE and constrain certain bulk-bulk-to-boundary couplings using the BOE. The extraction of the former relies on a non-trivial, polynomial k dependence of the one-point functions, which we explicitly demonstrate. In addition, it requires the knowledge of the one-point functions of SU$(2)$ descendant operators, which we likewise explicitly determine.

All Tree-Level MHV Form Factors in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM from Twistor Space

We incorporate all gauge-invariant local composite operators into the twistor-space formulation of N=4 SYM theory, detailing and expanding on ideas we presented recently in arXiv:1603.04471. The vertices for these operators contain infinitely many terms and we show how they can be constructed by taking suitable derivatives of a light-like Wilson loop in twistor space and shrinking it down to a point. In particular, these vertices directly yield the tree-level MHV super form factors of all composite operators in N=4 SYM theory.

Composite Operators in the Twistor Formulation of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM Theory

We incorporate gauge-invariant local composite operators into the twistor-space formulation of $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super Yang-Mills theory. In this formulation, the interactions of the elementary fields are reorganized into infinitely many interaction vertices and we argue that the same applies to composite operators. To test our definition of the local composite operators in twistor space, we compute several corresponding form factors, thereby also initiating the study of form factors using the position twistor-space framework. Throughout this letter, we use the composite operator built from two identical complex scalars as a pedagogical example; we treat the general case in a follow-up paper.

Form factors and the dilatation operator in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory and its deformations

In the first part of this thesis, we study form factors of general gauge-invariant local composite operators in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory at various loop orders and for various numbers of external legs. We show how to use on-shell methods for their calculation and in particular extract the dilatation operator from the result. We also investigate the properties of the corresponding remainder functions. Moreover, we extend on-shell diagrams, a Graßmannian integral formulation and an integrability-based construction via R-operators to form factors, focussing on the chiral part of the stress-tensor supermultiplet as an example. In the second part, we study the $β$- and the $γ_i$-deformation, which were respectively shown to be the most general supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric field-theory deformations of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory that are integrable at the level of the asymptotic Bethe ansatz. For these theories, a new kind of finite-size effect occurs, which we call prewrapping and which emerges from double-trace structures that are required in the deformed Lagrangians. While the $β$-deformation is conformal when the double-trace couplings are at their non-trivial IR fixed points, the $γ_i$-deformation has running double-trace couplings without fixed points, which break conformal invariance even in the planar theory. Nevertheless, the $γ_i$-deformation allows for highly non-trivial field-theoretic tests of integrability at arbitrarily high loop orders.

On a CFT limit of planar $γ_i$-deformed $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory

We show that an integrable four-dimensional non-unitary field theory that was recently proposed as a certain limit of the $γ_i$-deformed $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory is incomplete and not conformal -- not even in the planar limit. We complete this theory by double-trace couplings and find conformal one-loop fix-points when admitting respective complex coupling constants. These couplings must not be neglected in the planar limit, as they can contribute to planar multi-point functions. Based on our results for certain two-loop planar anomalous dimensions, we propose tests of integrability.

On-shell Diagrams, Graßmannians and Integrability for Form Factors

We apply on-shell and integrability methods that have been developed in the context of scattering amplitudes in N=4 SYM theory to tree-level form factors of this theory. Focussing on the colour-ordered super form factors of the chiral part of the stress-tensor multiplet as an example, we show how to systematically construct on-shell diagrams for these form factors with the minimal form factor as further building block in addition to the three-point amplitudes. Moreover, we obtain analytic representations in terms of Graßmannian integrals in spinor helicity, twistor and momentum twistor variables. While Yangian invariance is broken by the operator insertion, we find that the form factors are eigenstates of the integrable spin-chain transfer matrix built from the monodromy matrix that yields the Yangian generators. Constructing them via the method of R operators allows to introduce deformations that preserve the integrable structure. We finally show that the integrable properties extend to minimal tree-level form factors of generic composite operators as well as certain leading singularities of their n-point loop-level form factors.

One-loop one-point functions in gauge-gravity dualities with defects

We initiate the calculation of loop corrections to correlation functions in 4D defect CFTs. More precisely, we consider N=4 SYM with a codimension-one defect separating two regions of space, x_3>0 and x_3<0, where the gauge group is SU(N) and SU(N-k), respectively. This set-up is made possible by some of the real scalar fields acquiring a non-vanishing and x_3-dependent vacuum expectation value for x_3>0. The holographic dual is the D3-D5 probe brane system where the D5 brane geometry is AdS_4 x S^2 and a background gauge field has k units of flux through the S^2. We diagonalise the mass matrix of the defect CFT making use of fuzzy-sphere coordinates and we handle the x_3-dependence of the mass terms in the 4D Minkowski space propagators by reformulating these as standard massive AdS_4 propagators. Furthermore, we show that only two Feynman diagrams contribute to the one-loop correction to the one-point function of any single-trace operator and we explicitly calculate this correction in the planar limit for the simplest chiral primary. The result of this calculation is compared to an earlier string-theory computation in a certain double-scaling limit, finding perfect agreement. Finally, we discuss how to generalise our calculation to any single-trace operator, to finite N and to other types of observables such as Wilson loops.

Amplitudes, Form Factors and the Dilatation Operator in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM Theory

We study the form factor of a generic gauge-invariant local composite operator in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory. At tree level and for a minimal number of external on-shell super fields, we find that the form factor precisely yields the spin-chain picture of integrability in the language of scattering amplitudes. Moreover, we compute the cut-constructible part of the one-loop correction to this minimal form factor via generalised unitarity. From its UV divergence, we obtain the complete one-loop dilatation operator of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory. Thus, we provide a field-theoretic derivation of a relation between the one-loop dilatation operator and the four-point tree-level amplitude which was observed earlier. We also comment on the implications of our findings in the context of integrability.

Non-conformality of gamma_i-deformed N=4 SYM theory

We show that the gamma_i-deformation, which was proposed as candidate gauge theory for a non-supersymmetric three-parameter deformation of the AdS/CFT correspondence, is not conformally invariant due to a running double-trace coupling - not even in the 't Hooft limit. Moreover, this non-conformality cannot be cured when we extend the theory by adding at tree-level arbitrary multi-trace couplings that obey certain minimal consistency requirements. Our findings suggest a possible connection between this breakdown of conformal invariance and a puzzling divergence recently encountered in the integrability-based descriptions of two-loop finite-size corrections for the single-trace operator of two identical chiral fields. We propose a test to clarify this.

On-Shell Methods for the Two-Loop Dilatation Operator and Finite Remainders

We compute the two-loop minimal form factors of all operators in the SU(2) sector of planar N=4 SYM theory via on-shell unitarity methods. From the UV divergence of this result, we obtain the two-loop dilatation operator in this sector. Furthermore, we calculate the corresponding finite remainder functions. Since the operators break the supersymmetry, the remainder functions do not have the property of uniform transcendentality. However, the leading transcendentality part turns out to be universal and is identical to the corresponding BPS expressions. The remainder functions are shown to satisfy linear relations which can be explained by Ward identities of form factors following from R-symmetry.

One-Loop Partition Functions in Deformed $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM Theory

We study the thermodynamic behaviour of the real $β$- and $γ_i$-deformation of $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super Yang-Mills theory on $\mathbb{R}\times S^3$ in the planar limit. These theories were shown to be the most general asymptotically integrable supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric field-theory deformations of $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super Yang-Mills theory, respectively. We calculate the first loop correction to their partition functions using an extension of the dilatation-operator and Pólya-counting approach. In particular, we account for the one-loop finite-size effects which occur for operators of length one and two. Remarkably, we find that the $\mathcal{O}(λ)$ correction to the Hagedorn temperature is independent of the deformation parameters, although the partition function depends on them in a non-trivial way.

The complete one-loop dilatation operator of planar real beta-deformed N=4 SYM theory

We determine the missing finite-size corrections to the asymptotic one-loop dilatation operator of the real $β$-deformed $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory for the gauge groups $U(N)$ and $SU(N)$ in the 't Hooft limit. In the $SU(N)$ case, the absence of the $U(1)$ field components leads to a new kind of finite-size effect, which we call prewrapping. We classify which states are potentially affected by prewrapping at generic loop orders and comment on the necessity to include it into the integrability-based description. As a further result, we identify classes of $n$-point correlation functions which at all loop orders in the planar theory are given by the values of their undeformed counterparts. Finally, we determine the superconformal multiplet structure and one-loop anomalous dimensions of all single-trace states with classical scaling dimension $Δ_0 \leq 4.5$.

A piece of cake: the ground-state energies in gamma_i-deformed N=4 SYM theory

In the non-supersymmetric gamma_i-deformed N=4 SYM theory, the scaling dimensions of the operators tr[Z^L] composed of L scalar fields Z receive finite-size wrapping and prewrapping corrections in the 't Hooft limit. In this paper, we calculate these scaling dimensions to leading wrapping order directly from Feynman diagrams. For L>=3, the result is proportional to the maximally transcendental `cake' integral. It matches with an earlier result obtained from the integrability-based Luescher corrections, TBA and Y-system equations. At L=2, where the integrability-based equations yield infinity, we find a finite rational result. This result is renormalization-scheme dependent due to the non-vanishing beta-function of an induced quartic scalar double-trace coupling, on which we have reported earlier. This explicitly shows that conformal invariance is broken - even in the 't Hooft limit.

An Analytical Model of Packet Collisions in IEEE 802.15.4 Wireless Networks

Numerous studies showed that concurrent transmissions can boost wireless network performance despite collisions. While these works provide empirical evidence that concurrent transmissions may be received reliably, existing signal capture models only partially explain the root causes of this phenomenon. We present a comprehensive mathematical model that reveals the reasons and provides insights on the key parameters affecting the performance of MSK-modulated transmissions. A major contribution is a closed-form derivation of the receiver bit decision variable for arbitrary numbers of colliding signals and constellations of power ratios, timing offsets, and carrier phase offsets. We systematically explore the root causes for successful packet delivery under concurrent transmissions across the whole parameter space of the model. We confirm the capture threshold behavior observed in previous studies but also reveal new insights relevant for the design of optimal protocols: We identify capture zones depending not only on the signal power ratio but also on time and phase offsets.

We discuss ways of obtaining non-commutative versions of relativistic wave equations like the Klein-Gordon, Dirac and Proca equations in 2+1 dimensions by applying a suitably defined Fourier transform, and point out the relation between non-commutative Dirac equations and the exponentiated Dirac operator considered by Atiyah and Moore.

Air Dominance in Sensor Networks: Guarding Sensor Motes using Selective Interference

Securing wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is a hard problem. In particular, network access control is notoriously difficult to achieve due to the inherent broadcast characteristics of wireless communications: an attacker can easily target any node in its transmission range and affect large parts of a sensor network simultaneously. In this paper, we therefore propose a distributed guardian system to protect a WSN based on physically regulating channel access by means of selective interference. The guardians are deployed alongside a sensor network, inspecting all local traffic, classifying packets based on their content, and destroying any malicious packet while still on the air. In that sense, the system tries to gain "air dominance" over attackers. A key challenge in implementing the guardian system is the resulting real-time requirement in order to classify and destroy packets during transmission. We present a USRP2 software radio based guardian implementation for IEEE 802.15.4 that meets this challenge; using an FPGA-based design we can even check for the content of the very last payload byte of a packet and still prevent its reception by a potential victim mote. Our evaluation shows that the guardians effectively block 99.9% of unauthorized traffic in 802.15.4 networks in our experiments, without disturbing the legitimate operations of the WSN.

Key Generation in Wireless Sensor Networks Based on Frequency-selective Channels - Design, Implementation, and Analysis

Key management in wireless sensor networks faces several new challenges. The scale, resource limitations, and new threats such as node capture necessitate the use of an on-line key generation by the nodes themselves. However, the cost of such schemes is high since their secrecy is based on computational complexity. Recently, several research contributions justified that the wireless channel itself can be used to generate information-theoretic secure keys. By exchanging sampling messages during movement, a bit string can be derived that is only known to the involved entities. Yet, movement is not the only possibility to generate randomness. The channel response is also strongly dependent on the frequency of the transmitted signal. In our work, we introduce a protocol for key generation based on the frequency-selectivity of channel fading. The practical advantage of this approach is that we do not require node movement. Thus, the frequent case of a sensor network with static motes is supported. Furthermore, the error correction property of the protocol mitigates the effects of measurement errors and other temporal effects, giving rise to an agreement rate of over 97%. We show the applicability of our protocol by implementing it on MICAz motes, and evaluate its robustness and secrecy through experiments and analysis.
