On a CFT limit of planar $γ_i$-deformed $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory

We show that an integrable four-dimensional non-unitary field theory that was recently proposed as a certain limit of the $γ_i$-deformed $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory is incomplete and not conformal -- not even in the planar limit. We complete this theory by double-trace couplings and find conformal one-loop fix-points when admitting respective complex coupling constants. These couplings must not be neglected in the planar limit, as they can contribute to planar multi-point functions. Based on our results for certain two-loop planar anomalous dimensions, we propose tests of integrability.

Non-conformality of gamma_i-deformed N=4 SYM theory

We show that the gamma_i-deformation, which was proposed as candidate gauge theory for a non-supersymmetric three-parameter deformation of the AdS/CFT correspondence, is not conformally invariant due to a running double-trace coupling - not even in the 't Hooft limit. Moreover, this non-conformality cannot be cured when we extend the theory by adding at tree-level arbitrary multi-trace couplings that obey certain minimal consistency requirements. Our findings suggest a possible connection between this breakdown of conformal invariance and a puzzling divergence recently encountered in the integrability-based descriptions of two-loop finite-size corrections for the single-trace operator of two identical chiral fields. We propose a test to clarify this.

On-Shell Methods for the Two-Loop Dilatation Operator and Finite Remainders

We compute the two-loop minimal form factors of all operators in the SU(2) sector of planar N=4 SYM theory via on-shell unitarity methods. From the UV divergence of this result, we obtain the two-loop dilatation operator in this sector. Furthermore, we calculate the corresponding finite remainder functions. Since the operators break the supersymmetry, the remainder functions do not have the property of uniform transcendentality. However, the leading transcendentality part turns out to be universal and is identical to the corresponding BPS expressions. The remainder functions are shown to satisfy linear relations which can be explained by Ward identities of form factors following from R-symmetry.

The complete one-loop dilatation operator of planar real beta-deformed N=4 SYM theory

We determine the missing finite-size corrections to the asymptotic one-loop dilatation operator of the real $β$-deformed $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory for the gauge groups $U(N)$ and $SU(N)$ in the 't Hooft limit. In the $SU(N)$ case, the absence of the $U(1)$ field components leads to a new kind of finite-size effect, which we call prewrapping. We classify which states are potentially affected by prewrapping at generic loop orders and comment on the necessity to include it into the integrability-based description. As a further result, we identify classes of $n$-point correlation functions which at all loop orders in the planar theory are given by the values of their undeformed counterparts. Finally, we determine the superconformal multiplet structure and one-loop anomalous dimensions of all single-trace states with classical scaling dimension $Δ_0 \leq 4.5$.

A piece of cake: the ground-state energies in gamma_i-deformed N=4 SYM theory

In the non-supersymmetric gamma_i-deformed N=4 SYM theory, the scaling dimensions of the operators tr[Z^L] composed of L scalar fields Z receive finite-size wrapping and prewrapping corrections in the 't Hooft limit. In this paper, we calculate these scaling dimensions to leading wrapping order directly from Feynman diagrams. For L>=3, the result is proportional to the maximally transcendental `cake' integral. It matches with an earlier result obtained from the integrability-based Luescher corrections, TBA and Y-system equations. At L=2, where the integrability-based equations yield infinity, we find a finite rational result. This result is renormalization-scheme dependent due to the non-vanishing beta-function of an induced quartic scalar double-trace coupling, on which we have reported earlier. This explicitly shows that conformal invariance is broken - even in the 't Hooft limit.

The spectrum of tachyons in AdS/CFT

We analyze the spectrum of open strings stretched between a D-brane and an anti-D-brane in planar AdS/CFT using various tools. We focus on open strings ending on two giant gravitons with different orientation in $AdS_5 \times S^5$ and study the spectrum of string excitations using the following approaches: open spin-chain, boundary asymptotic Bethe ansatz and boundary thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (BTBA). We find agreement between a perturbative high order diagrammatic calculation in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM and the leading finite-size boundary Luscher correction. We study the ground state energy of the system at finite coupling by deriving and numerically solving a set of BTBA equations. While the numerics give reasonable results at small coupling, they break down at finite coupling when the total energy of the string gets close to zero, possibly indicating that the state turns tachyonic. The location of the breakdown is also predicted analytically.

From N=4 gauge theory to N=2 conformal QCD: three-loop mixing of scalar composite operators

We derive the planar dilatation operator in the closed subsector of scalar composite operators of an N=2 superconformal quiver gauge theory to three loops. By tuning the ratio of its two gauge couplings we interpolate between a Z_2 orbifold of N=4 SYM theory and N=2 superconformal QCD. We find zeta(3) contributions at three loops that disappear when the theory is at the orbifold point. They are responsible for imaginary contributions to the dispersion relation of a single scalar excitation in the spin-chain picture. This points towards an interpretation of the individual scalar excitations as effective rather than as elementary magnons. We argue that the elementary excitations should be associated with certain fermions and covariant derivatives, and that integrability in the respective subsectors should persist at least to two loops.

Superspace calculation of the three-loop dilatation operator of N=4 SYM theory

We derive the three-loop dilatation operator of the flavor SU(2) subsector of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in the planar limit by a direct Feynman diagram calculation in N=1 superspace. The transcendentality three contributions which appear in intermediate steps cancel among each other, leaving a rational result which confirms the predictions from integrability. We derive finiteness conditions that allow us to avoid the explicit evaluation of entire classes of Feynman graphs and also yield constraints on the D-algebra manipulations. Based on these results, we discover universal cancellation mechanisms. As a check for the consistency of our result, we verify the cancellation of all higher-order poles.

Superspace methods for the computation of wrapping effects in the standard and beta-deformed N=4 SYM

We review the general procedure for the field-theoretical computation of wrapping effects in standard and beta-deformed N=4 super Yang-Mills by means of N=1 superspace techniques. In the undeformed theory, these methods allowed to find explicit results at four and five loops for two-impurity operators. In the deformed case, a general expression for the finite-size correction to the anomalous dimension of single-impurity operators at the critical order was obtained.

Five-loop anomalous dimension at critical wrapping order in N=4 SYM

We compute the anomalous dimension of a length-five operator at five-loop order in the SU(2) sector of N=4 SYM theory in the planar limit. This is critical wrapping order at five loops. The result is obtained perturbatively by means of N=1 superspace techniques. Our result from perturbation theory confirms explicitly the formula conjectured in arXiv:0901.4864 for the five-loop anomalous dimension of twist-three operators. We also explicitly obtain the same result by employing the recently proposed Y-system.

Aspects of Noncommutativity and Holography in Field Theory and String Theory

This thesis addresses two topics: noncommutative Yang-Mills theories and the AdS/CFT correspondence. In the first part we study a partial summation of the theta-expanded perturbation theory. The latter allows one to define noncommutative Yang-Mills theories with arbitrary gauge groups G as a perturbation expansion in the noncommutativity parameter theta. We show that for G being a subgroup of U(N) that is not identical to U(M) with M<N, one does not find a finite set of theta-summed Feynman rules. In the second part we study quantities which are important for the realization of the holographic principle in the AdS/CFT correspondence: boundaries, geodesics and the propagators of scalar fields. They should play a role in the holographic setup in the BMN limit as well. We observe how these quantities behave in the limiting process from AdS_5 x S^5 to the 10-dimensional plane wave which is the spacetime in the BMN limit.

Wrapping interactions and the genus expansion of the 2-point function of composite operators

We perform a systematic analysis of wrapping interactions for a general class of theories with color degrees of freedom, including N=4 SYM. Wrapping interactions arise in the genus expansion of the 2-point function of composite operators as finite size effects that start to appear at a certain order in the coupling constant at which the range of the interaction is equal to the length of the operators. We analyze in detail the relevant genus expansions, and introduce a strategy to single out the wrapping contributions, based on adding spectator fields. We use a toy model to demonstrate our procedure, performing all computations explicitly. Although completely general, our treatment should be particularly useful for applications to the recent problem of wrapping contributions in some checks of the AdS/CFT correspondence.
