Evaluations of Hecke algebra traces at Kazhdan-Lusztig basis elements

For irreducible characters $\{ χ_q^λ\,|\, λ\vdash n \}$, induced sign characters $\{ ε_q^λ\,|\, λ\vdash n \}$, and induced trivial characters $\{ η_q^λ\,|\, λ\vdash n \}$ of the Hecke algebra $H_n(q)$, and Kazhdan-Lusztig basis elements $C'_w(q)$ with $w$ avoiding the patterns 3412 and 4231, we combinatorially interpret the polynomials $χ_q^λ(q^{l(w)/2}C'_w(q))$, $ε_q^λ(q^{l(w)/2} C'_w(q))$, and $\smash{η_q^λ(q^{l(w)/2} C'_w(q))}$. This gives a new algebraic interpretation of chromatic quasisymmetric functions of Shareshian and Wachs, and a new combinatorial interpretation of special cases of results of Haiman. We prove similar results for other $H_n(q)$-traces, and confirm a formula conjectured by Haiman.

The unbroken spectrum of type-A Frobenius seaweeds

If $\mathfrak{g}$ is a Frobenius Lie algebra, then for certain $F\in \mathfrak{g}^*$ the natural map $\mathfrak{g}\longrightarrow \mathfrak{g}^* $ given by $x \longmapsto F[x,-]$ is an isomorphism. The inverse image of $F$ under this isomorphism is called a principal element. We show that if $\mathfrak{g}$ is a Frobenius seaweed subalgebra of $A_{n-1}=\mathfrak{sl}(n)$ then the spectrum of the adjoint of a principal element consists of an unbroken set of integers whose multiplicities have a symmetric distribution. Our proof methods are constructive and combinatorial in nature.

Descent polynomials for k bubble-sortable permutations of type B

Motivated by the work of Chung, Claesson, Dukes, and Graham, we define a natural type B analog of the classic bubble sort, and use it to define a type B analog of the maximum drop statistic. We enumerate (by explicit, recursive, and generating function formulas) signed permutations with r type B descents and type B maximum drop at most k. We also find a connection between these signed permutations and certain 2-colored juggling sequences.

The classification of 231-avoiding permutations by descents and maximum drop

We study the number of 231-avoiding permutations with $j$-descents and maximum drop is less than or equal to $k$ which we denote by $a_{n,231,j}^{(k)}$. We show that $a_{n,231,j}^{(k)}$ also counts the number of Dyck paths of length $2n$ with $n-j$ peaks and height $\leq k+1$, and the number of ordered trees with $n$ edges, $j+1$ internal nodes, and of height $\leq k+1$. We show that the generating functions for the $a_{n,231,j}^{(k)}$s with $k$ fixed satisfy a simple recursion. We also use the combinatorics of ordered trees to prove new explicit formulas for $a_{n,231,j}^{(k)}$ as a function of $n$ in a number of special values of $j$ and $k$ and prove a simple recursion for the $a_{n,231,j}^{(k)}$s.

Eulerian quasisymmetric functions for the type B Coxeter group and other wreath product groups

Eulerian quasisymmetric functions were introduced by Shareshian and Wachs in order to obtain a q-analog of Euler's exponential generating function formula for the Eulerian numbers. They are defined via the symmetric group, and applying the stable and nonstable principal specializations yields formulas for joint distributions of permutation statistics. We consider the wreath product of the cyclic group with the symmetric group, also known as the group of colored permutations. We use this group to introduce colored Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, which are a generalization of Eulerian quasisymmetric functions. We derive a formula for the generating function of these colored Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, which reduces to a formula of Shareshian and Wachs for the Eulerian quasisymmetric functions. We show that applying the stable and nonstable principal specializations yields formulas for joint distributions of colored permutation statistics, which generalize the Shareshian-Wachs q-analog of Euler's formula, formulas of Foata and Han, and a formula of Chow and Gessel.
