Integral equation method for a Robin-type traction problem in a periodic domain

In this note, we consider a Robin-type traction problem for a linearly elastic body occupying an infinite periodically perforated domain. After proving the uniqueness of the solution we use periodic elastic layer potentials to show that the solution can be written as the sum of a single layer potential, a constant function and a linear function of the space variable. The density of the periodic single layer potential and the constant are identified as the unique solutions of a certain integral equation.

Multi-parameter analysis of the obstacle scattering problem

We consider the acoustic field scattered by a bounded impenetrable obstacle and we study its dependence upon a certain set of parameters. As usual, the problem is modeled by an exterior Dirichlet problem for the Helmholtz equation $Δu +k^2u=0$. We show that the solution $u$ and its far field pattern $u_\infty$ depend real analytically on the shape of the obstacle, the wave number $k$, and the Dirichlet datum. We also prove a similar result for the corresponding Dirichlet-to-Neumann map.

Shape analyticity and singular perturbations for layer potential operators

We study the effect of regular and singular domain perturbations on layer potential operators for the Laplace equation. First, we consider layer potentials supported on a diffeomorphic image $ϕ(\partialΩ)$ of a reference set $\partialΩ$ and we present some real analyticity results for the dependence upon the map $ϕ$. Then we introduce a perforated domain $Ω(ε)$ with a small hole of size $ε$ and we compute power series expansions that describe the layer potentials on $\partialΩ(ε)$ when the parameter $ε$ approximates the degenerate value $ε=0$.

A singularly perturbed non-ideal transmission problem and application to the effective conductivity of a periodic composite

We investigate the effective thermal conductivity of a two-phase composite with thermal resistance at the interface. The composite is obtained by introducing into an infinite homogeneous matrix a periodic set of inclusions of a different material. The diameter of each inclusion is assumed to be proportional to a positive real parameter ε. Under suitable assumptions, we show that the effective conductivity can be continued real analytically in the parameter εaround the degenerate value ε=0, in correspondence of which the inclusions collapse to points.

A singularly perturbed nonlinear traction problem in a periodically perforated domain. A functional analytic approach

We consider a periodically perforated domain obtained by making in R^n a periodic set of holes, each of them of size proportional to ε. Then we introduce a nonlinear boundary value problem for the Lamé equations in such a periodically perforated domain. The unknown of the problem is a vector valued function u which represents the displacement attained in the equilibrium configuration by the points of a periodic linearly elastic matrix with a hole of size εcontained in each periodic cell. We assume that the traction exerted by the matrix on the boundary of each hole depends (nonlinearly) on the displacement attained by the points of the boundary of the hole. Then our aim is to describe what happens to the displacement vector function u when εtends to 0. Under suitable assumptions we prove the existence of a family of solutions {u(ε,.) : ε\in ]0,ε'[} with a prescribed limiting behaviour when εapproaches 0. Moreover, the family {u(ε,.) : ε\in ]0,ε'[} is in a sense locally unique and can be continued real analytically for negative values of ε.

Effective conductivity of a singularly perturbed periodic two-phase composite with imperfect thermal contact at the two-phase interface

We consider the asymptotic behaviour of the effective thermal conductivity of a two-phase composite obtained by introducing into an infinite homogeneous matrix a periodic set of inclusions of a different material and of size proportional to a positive parameter ε. We are interested in the case of imperfect thermal contact at the two-phase interface. Under suitable assumptions, we show that the effective thermal conductivity can be continued real analytically in the parameter εaround the degenerate value ε=0, in correspondence of which the inclusions collapse to points. The results presented here are obtained by means of an approach based on functional analysis and potential theory and are also part of a forthcoming paper by the authors.

Real analytic families of harmonic functions in a domain with a small hole

Let n\ge 3. Let Ω^i and Ω^o be open bounded connected subsets of R^n containing the origin. Let ε_0>0 be such that Ω^o contains the closure of εΩ^i for all ε\in]-ε_0,ε_0[. Then, for a fixed ε\in]-ε_0,ε_0[\{0} we consider a Dirichlet problem for the Laplace operator in the perforated domain Ω^o\εΩ^i. We denote by u_εthe corresponding solution. If p\inΩ^o and p\neq 0, then we know that under suitable regularity assumptions there exist ε_p>0 and a real analytic operator U_p from ]-ε_p,ε_p[ to R such that u_ε(p)=U_p[ε] for all ε\in]0,ε_p[. Thus it is natural to ask what happens to the equality u_ε(p)=U_p[ε] for ε<0. We show a general result on continuation properties of some particular real analytic families of harmonic functions in domains with a small hole and we prove that the validity of the equality u_ε(p)=U_p[ε] for ε<0 depends on the parity of the dimension n.

A real analytic family of fundamental solutions of elliptic partial differential operators with real constant coefficients

We construct of a family of fundamental solutions for elliptic partial differential operators with real constant coefficients. The elements of such a family are expressed by means of jointly real analytic functions of the coefficients of the operators and of the spatial variable. We show regularity properties in the frame of Schauder spaces for the corresponding single layer potentials.
