$1/N$ expansion of the D3-D5 defect CFT

We consider four dimensional $U(N)$ $\mathcal N=4$ SYM theory interacting with a 3d $\mathcal N=4$ theory living on a codimension-one interface and holographically dual to the D3-D5 system without flux. Localization captures several observables in this dCFT, including its free energy, related to the defect expectation value, and single trace $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS composite scalars. These quantities may be computed in a hermitian one-matrix model with non-polynomial single-trace potential. We exploit the integrable Volterra hierarchy underlying the matrix model and systematically study its $1/N$ expansion at any value of the 't Hooft coupling. In particular, the strong coupling regime is determined -- up to non-perturbative exponentially suppressed corrections -- by differential relations that constrain higher order terms in the $1/N$ expansion. The analysis is extended to the model with $SU(N)$ gauge symmetry by resorting to the more general Toda lattice equations.

$1/N$ expansion of circular Wilson loop in $\mathcal N=2$ superconformal $SU(N)\times SU(N)$ quiver

Localization approach to $\mathcal N=2$ superconformal $SU(N) \times SU(N)$ quiver theory leads to a non-Gaussian two-matrix model representation for the expectation value of BPS circular $SU(N)$ Wilson loop $\langle\mathcal W\rangle$. We study the subleading $1/N^2$ term in the large $N$ expansion of $\langle\mathcal W\rangle$ at weak and strong coupling. We concentrate on the case of the symmetric quiver with equal gauge couplings which is equivalent to the $\mathbb Z_{2}$ orbifold of the $SU(2N)$ $\mathcal N=4$ SYM theory. This orbifold gauge theory should be dual to type IIB superstring in ${\rm AdS}_5\times (S^{5}/\mathbb Z_{2})$. We present a string theory argument suggesting that the $1/N^2$ term in $\langle\mathcal W\rangle$ in the orbifold theory should have the same strong-coupling asymptotics $ λ^{3/2}$ as in the $\mathcal N=4$ SYM case. We support this prediction by a numerical study of the localization matrix model on the gauge theory side. We also find a relation between the $1/N^2$ term in the Wilson loop expectation value and the derivative of the free energy of the orbifold gauge theory on 4-sphere.

BPS Wilson loop in $\mathcal N=2$ superconformal $SU(N)$ "orientifold" gauge theory and weak-strong coupling interpolation

We consider the expectation value $\langle \cal W \rangle$ of the circular BPS Wilson loop in ${\cal N}=2$ superconformal $SU(N)$ gauge theory containing a vector multiplet coupled to two hypermultiplets in rank-2 symmetric and antisymmetric representations. This model admits a regular large $N$ expansion, is planar-equivalent to ${\cal N}=4$ SYM theory and is expected to be dual to a certain orbifold/orientifold projection of AdS$_5\times S^5$ superstring theory. On the string theory side $\langle\cal W \rangle $ is represented by the path integral expanded near the same AdS$_2$ minimal surface as in the maximally supersymmetric case. Following the string theory argument in arXiv:2007.08512, we suggest that as in the ${\cal N}=4$ SYM case and in the ${\cal N}=2$ $SU(N) \times SU(N)$ superconformal quiver theory discussed in arXiv:2102.07696, the coefficient of the leading non-planar $1/N^2$ correction in $\langle\cal W \rangle $ should have the universal $λ^{3/2}$ scaling at large 't Hooft coupling. We confirm this prediction by starting with the localization matrix model representation for $\langle\cal W \rangle $. We complement the analytic derivation of the $λ^{3/2}$ scaling by a numerical high-precision resummation and extrapolation of the weak-coupling expansion using conformal mapping improved Padé analysis.

Wilson loop in general representation and RG flow in 1d defect QFT

The generalized Wilson loop operator interpolating between the supersymmetric and the ordinary Wilson loop in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM theory provides an interesting example of renormalization group flow on a line defect: the scalar coupling parameter $ζ$ has a non-trivial beta function and may be viewed as a running coupling constant in a 1d defect QFT. In this paper we continue the study of this operator, generalizing previous results for the beta function and Wilson loop expectation value to the case of an arbitrary representation of the gauge group and beyond the planar limit. Focusing on the scalar ladder limit where the generalized Wilson loop reduces to a purely scalar line operator in a free adjoint theory, and specializing to the case of the rank $k$ symmetric representation of $SU(N)$, we also consider a certain semiclassical limit where $k$ is taken to infinity with the product $k\, ζ^2$ fixed. This limit can be conveniently studied using a 1d defect QFT representation in terms of $N$ commuting bosons. Using this representation, we compute the beta function and the circular loop expectation value in the large $k$ limit, and use it to derive constraints on the structure of the beta function for general representation. We discuss the corresponding 1d RG flow and comment on the consistency of the results with the 1d defect version of the F-theorem.

Higher order RG flow on the Wilson line in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM

Extending earlier work, we find the two-loop term in the beta-function for the scalar coupling $ζ$ in a generalized Wilson loop operator of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory, working in the planar weak-coupling expansion. The beta-function for $ζ$ has fixed points at $ζ=\pm 1$ and $ζ=0$, corresponding respectively to the supersymmetric Wilson-Maldacena loop and to the standard Wilson loop without scalar coupling. As a consequence of our result for the beta-function, we obtain a prediction for the two-loop term in the anomalous dimension of the scalar field inserted on the standard Wilson loop. We also find a subset of higher-loop contributions (with highest powers of $ζ$ at each order in `t Hooft coupling) coming from the scalar ladder graphs determining the corresponding terms in the five-loop beta-function. We discuss the related structure of the circular Wilson loop expectation value commenting, in particular, on consistency with a 1d defect version of the F-theorem. We also compute (to two loops in the planar ladder approximation) the two-point correlators of scalars inserted on the Wilson line.

$\mathcal N=2$ conformal gauge theories at large R-charge: the $SU(N)$ case

Conformal theories with a global symmetry may be studied in the double scaling regime where the interaction strength is reduced while the global charge increases. Here, we study generic 4d $\mathcal N=2$ $SU(N)$ gauge theories with conformal matter content at large R-charge $Q_{\rm R}\to \infty$ with fixed 't Hooft-like coupling $κ= Q_{\rm R}\,g_{\rm YM}^{2}$. Our analysis concerns two distinct classes of natural scaling functions. The first is built in terms of chiral/anti-chiral two-point functions. The second involves one-point functions of chiral operators in presence of $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS Wilson-Maldacena loops. In the rank-1 $SU(2)$ case, the two-point sector has been recently shown to be captured by an auxiliary chiral random matrix model. We extend the analysis to $SU(N)$ theories and provide an algorithm that computes arbitrarily long perturbative expansions for all considered models, parametric in the rank. The leading and next-to-leading contributions are cross-checked by a three-loops computation in $\mathcal N=1$ superspace. This perturbative analysis identifies maximally non-planar Feynman diagrams as the relevant ones in the double scaling limit. In the Wilson-Maldacena sector, we obtain closed expressions for the scaling functions, valid for any rank and $κ$. As an application, we analyze quantitatively the large 't Hooft coupling limit $κ\gg 1$ where we identify all perturbative and non-perturbative contributions. The latter are associated with heavy electric BPS states and the precise correspondence with their mass spectrum is clarified.

Boundary correlators in WZW model on AdS$_2$

Boundary correlators of elementary fields in some 2d conformal field theories defined on AdS$_2$ have a particularly simple structure. For example, the correlators of the Liouville scalar happen to be the same as the correlators of the chiral component of the stress tensor on a plane restricted to the real line. Here we show that an analogous relation is true also in the WZW model: boundary correlators of the WZW scalars have the same structure as the correlators of chiral Kač-Moody currents. This is checked at the level of the tree and one-loop Witten diagrams in AdS$_2$. We also compute some tree-level correlators in a generic $σ$-model defined on AdS$_2$ and show that they simplify only in the WZW case where an extra Kač-Moody symmetry appears. In particular, the terms in 4-point correlators having logarithmic dependence on 1d cross-ratio cancel only at the WZW point. One motivation behind this work is to learn how to compute AdS$_2$ loop corrections in 2d models with derivative interactions related to the study of correlators of operators on Wilson loops in string theory in AdS.

Supersymmetric Liouville theory in AdS$_2$ and AdS/CFT

In a series of recent papers, a special kind of AdS$_2$/CFT$_1$ duality was observed: the boundary correlators of elementary fields that appear in the Lagrangian of a 2d conformal theory in rigid AdS$_2$ background are the same as the correlators of the corresponding primary operators in the chiral half of that 2d CFT in flat space restricted to the real line. The examples considered were: (i) the Liouville theory where the operator dual to the Liouville scalar in AdS$_2$ is the stress tensor; (ii) the abelian Toda theory where the operators dual to the Toda scalars are the $\mathcal W$-algebra generators; (iii) the non-abelian Toda theory where the Liouville field is dual to the stress tensor while the extra gauged WZW theory scalars are dual to non-abelian parafermionic operators. By direct Witten diagram computations in AdS$_2$ one can check that the structure of the boundary correlators is indeed consistent with the Virasoro (or higher) symmetry. Here we consider a supersymmetric generalization: the $\mathcal N=1$ superconformal Liouville theory in AdS$_2$. We start with the super Liouville theory coupled to 2d supergravity and show that a consistent restriction to rigid AdS$_2$ background requires a non-zero value of the supergravity auxiliary field and thus a modification of the Liouville potential from its familiar flat-space form. We show that the Liouville scalar and its fermionic partner are dual to the chiral half of the stress tensor and the supercurrent of the super Liouville theory on the plane. We perform tests supporting the duality by explicitly computing AdS$_2$ Witten diagrams with bosonic and fermionic loops.

On boundary correlators in Liouville theory on AdS$_{2}$

We consider the Liouville theory in fixed Euclidean AdS$_2$ background. Expanded near the minimum of the potential the elementary field has mass squared 2 and (assuming the standard Dirichlet b.c.) corresponds to a dimension 2 operator at the boundary. We provide strong evidence for the conjecture that the boundary correlators of the Liouville field are the same as the correlators of the holomorphic stress tensor (or the Virasoro generator with the same central charge) on a half-plane or a disc restricted to the boundary. This relation was first observed at the leading semiclassical order (tree-level Witten diagrams in AdS$_2$) in arXiv:1902.10536 and here we demonstrate its validity also at the one-loop level. We also discuss arguments that may lead to its general proof.

Toda theory in AdS$_{2}$ and $\mathcal WA_{n}$-algebra structure of boundary correlators

We consider the conformal $A_{n}$ Toda theory in AdS$_{2}$. Due to the bulk full Virasoro symmetry, this system provides an instance of a non-gravitational $\text{AdS}_{2}$/$\text{CFT}_{1}$ correspondence where the 1d boundary theory enjoys enhanced "$\frac{1}{2}$-Virasoro" symmetry. General boundary correlators are expected to be captured by the restriction of chiral correlators in a suitable $\mathcal WA_{n}$ Virasoro extension. At next-to-leading order in weak coupling expansion they have been conjectured to match the subleading terms in the large central charge expansion of the dual $\mathcal WA_{n}$ correlators. We explicitly test this conjecture on the boundary four point functions of the Toda scalar fields dual to $\mathcal WA_{n}$ generators with next-to-minimal spin 3 and 4. Our analysis is valid in the generic rank case and extends previous results for specific rank-2 Toda theories. On the AdS side, the extension is straightforward and requires the computation of a finite set of tree Witten diagrams. This is due to simple rank dependence and selection rules of cubic and quartic couplings. On the boundary, the CFT calculation is made feasible by exploiting crossing symmetry and specific meromorphic properties of the $\mathcal W$-algebra correlators at large central charge. We present the required 4-point functions in closed form for any rank and verify the bulk-boundary correspondence in full details.

Exact partition functions for deformed $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories with $N_{f}=4$ flavours

We consider the $Ω$-deformed $\mathcal{N}=2$ $SU(2)$ gauge theory in four dimensions with $N_{f}=4$ massive fundamental hypermultiplets. The low energy effective action depends on the deformation parameters $\varepsilon_{1}, \varepsilon_{2}$, the scalar field expectation value $a$, and the hypermultiplet masses ${\bf m}=(m_{1}, m_{2}, m_{3}, m_{4})$. Motivated by recent findings in the $\mathcal{N}=2^{*}$ theory, we explore the theories that are characterized by special fixed ratios $\varepsilon_{2}/\varepsilon_{1}$ and ${\bf m}/\varepsilon_{1}$ and propose a simple condition on the structure of the multi-instanton contributions to the prepotential determining the effective action. This condition determines a finite set $Π_{N}$ of special points such that the prepotential has $N$ poles at fixed positions independent on the instanton number. In analogy with what happens in the $\mathcal{N}=2^{*}$ gauge theory, the full prepotential of the $Π_{N}$ theories may be given in closed form as an explicit function of $a$ and the modular parameter $q$ appearing in special combinations of Eisenstein series and Jacobi theta functions with well defined modular properties. The resulting finite pole partition functions are related by AGT correspondence to special 4-point spherical conformal blocks of the Virasoro algebra. We examine in full details special cases where the closed expression of the block is known and confirms our Ansatz. We systematically study the special features of Zamolodchikov's recursion for the $Π_{N}$ conformal blocks. As a result, we provide a novel effective recursion relation that can be exactly solved and allows to prove the conjectured closed expressions analytically in the case of the $Π_{1}$ and $Π_{2}$ conformal blocks.

Exact partition functions for the $Ω$-deformed $\mathcal N=2^{*}$ $SU(2)$ gauge theory

We study the low energy effective action of the $Ω$-deformed $\mathcal N =2^{*}$ $SU(2) $ gauge theory. It depends on the deformation parameters $ε_{1},ε_{2}$, the scalar field expectation value $a$, and the hypermultiplet mass $m$. We explore the plane $(\frac{m}{ε_{1}}, \frac{ε_{2}}{ε_{1}})$ looking for special features in the multi-instanton contributions to the prepotential, motivated by what happens in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit $ε_{2}\to 0$. We propose a simple condition on the structure of poles of the $k$-instanton prepotential and show that it is admissible at a finite set of points in the above plane. At these special points, the prepotential has poles at fixed positions independent on the instanton number. Besides and remarkably, both the instanton partition function and the full prepotential, including the perturbative contribution, may be given in closed form as functions of the scalar expectation value $a$ and the modular parameter $q$ appearing in special combinations of Eisenstein series and Dedekind $η$ function. As a byproduct, the modular anomaly equation can be tested at all orders at these points. We discuss these special features from the point of view of the AGT correspondence and provide explicit toroidal 1-blocks in non-trivial closed form. The full list of solutions with 1, 2, 3, and 4 poles is determined and described in details.

On the cusp anomalous dimension in the ladder limit of $\mathcal N=4$ SYM

We analyze the cusp anomalous dimension in the (leading) ladder limit of $\mathcal N=4$ SYM and present new results for its higher-order perturbative expansion. We study two different limits with respect to the cusp angle $ϕ$. The first is the light-like regime where $x = e^{i\,ϕ}\to 0$. This limit is characterised by a non-trivial expansion of the cusp anomaly as a sum of powers of $\log x$, where the maximum exponent increases with the loop order. The coefficients of this expansion have remarkable transcendentality features and can be expressed by products of single zeta values. We show that the whole logarithmic expansion is fully captured by a solvable Woods-Saxon like one-dimensional potential. From the exact solution, we extract generating functions for the cusp anomaly as well as for the various specific transcendental structures appearing therein. The second limit that we discuss is the regime of small cusp angle. In this somewhat simpler case, we show how to organise the quantum mechanical perturbation theory in a novel efficient way by means of a suitable all-order Ansatz for the ground state of the associated Schrödinger problem. Our perturbative setup allows to systematically derive higher-order perturbative corrections in powers of the cusp angle as explicit non-perturbative functions of the effective coupling. This series approximation is compared with the numerical solution of the Schrödinger equation to show that we can achieve very good accuracy over the whole range of coupling and cusp angle. Our results have been obtained by relatively simple techniques. Nevertheless, they provide several non-trivial tests useful to check the application of Quantum Spectral Curve methods to the ladder approximation at non zero $ϕ$, in the two limits we studied.

On the large $Ω$-deformations in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit of $\mathcal N=2^{*}$ SYM

We study the multi-instanton partition functions of the $Ω$-deformed $\mathcal N =2^{*}$ $SU(2) $ gauge theory in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili (NS) limit. They depend on the deformation parameters $ε_{1}$, the scalar field expectation value $a$, and the hypermultiplet mass $m$. At fixed instanton number $k$, they are rational functions of $ε_{1}, a, m$ and we look for possible regularities that admit a parametrical description in the number of instantons. In each instanton sector, the contribution to the deformed Nekrasov prepotential has poles for "large" deformation parameters. To clarify the properties of these singularities we exploit Bethe/gauge correspondence and examine the special ratios $m/ε_{1}$ at which the associated spectral problem is $n$-gap. At these special points we illustrate several structural simplifications occurring in the partition functions. After discussing various tools to compute the prepotential, we analyze the non-perturbative corrections up to $k=24$ instantons and present various closed expressions for the coefficients of the singular terms. Both the regular and singular parts of the prepotential are resummed over all instantons and compared successfully with the exact prediction from the spectral theory of the Lamé equation, showing that the pole singularities are an artifact of the instanton expansion. The analysis is fully worked out in the 1-gap case, but the final pole cancellation is proved for a generic ratio $m/ε_{1}$ relating it to the gap width of the Lamé equation.

The ground state of long-range Schrodinger equations and static $q\bar{q}$ potential

Motivated by the recent results in arXiv:1601.05679 about the quark-antiquark potential in $\mathcal N=4$ SYM, we reconsider the problem of computing the asymptotic weak-coupling expansion of the ground state energy of a certain class of 1d Schrödinger operators $-\frac{d^{2}}{dx^{2}}+λ\,V(x)$ with long-range potential $V(x)$. In particular, we consider even potentials obeying $\int_{\mathbb R}dx\, V(x)<0$ with large $x$ asymptotics $V\sim -a/x^{2}-b/x^{3}+\cdots$. The associated Schrödinger operator is known to admit a bound state for $λ\to 0^{+}$, but the binding energy is rigorously non-analytic at $λ=0$. Its asymptotic expansion starts at order $\mathcal O(λ)$, but contains higher corrections $λ^{n}\,\log^{m}λ$ with all $0\le m\le n-1$ and standard Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbation theory fails order by order in $λ$. We discuss various analytical tools to tame this problem and provide the general expansion of the binding energy at $\mathcal O(λ^{3})$ in terms of quadratures. The method is tested on a soluble potential that is fully under control, and on various non-soluble cases as well. A supersymmetric case, arising in the study of the quark-antiquark potential in $\mathcal N=6$ ABJ(M) theory, is also exploited to provide a further non-trivial consistency check. Our analytical results confirm at third order a remarkable exponentiation of the leading infrared logarithms, first noticed in $\mathcal N=4$ SYM where it may be proved by Renormalization Group arguments. We prove this interesting feature at all orders at the level of the Schrödinger equation for general potentials in the considered class.

Higher Spin Lifshitz Theories and the KdV-Hierarchy

In this paper three dimensional higher spin theories in the Chern-Simons formulation with gauge algebra $sl(N,R)$ are investigated which have Lifshitz symmetry with scaling exponent $z$. We show that an explicit map exists for all $z$ and $N$ relating the Lifshitz Chern-Simons theory to the $(n,m)$ element of the KdV hierarchy. Furthermore we show that the map and hence the conserved charges are independent of $z$. We derive these result from the Drinfeld-Sokolov formalism of integrable systems.

Supergravity one-loop corrections on AdS_7 and AdS_3, higher spins and AdS/CFT

As was shown earlier, one-loop correction in 10d supergravity on AdS_5 x S^5 corresponds to the contributions to the vacuum energy and boundary 4d conformal anomaly which are minus the values for one n=4 Maxwell supermultiplet, thus reproducing the subleading term in their N^2-1 coefficient in the dual SU(N) SYM theory. We perform similar one-loop computations in 11d supergravity on AdS_7 x S^4 and 10d supergravity on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4. In the AdS_7 case we find that the corrections to the 6d conformal anomaly a-coefficient and the vacuum energy are again minus the ones for one (2,0) tensor multiplet, suggesting that the total a-anomaly coefficient for the dual (2,0) theory is 4 N^3 - 9/4 N - 7/4 and thus vanishes for N=1. In the AdS_3 case the one-loop correction to the vacuum energy or 2d central charge turns out to be equal to that of one free (4,4) scalar multiplet, i.e. is c=+6. This reproduces the subleading term in the central charge c= 6(Q_1 Q_5 +1) of the dual 2d CFT describing decoupling limit of D5-D1 system. We also present the expressions for the 6d anomaly a-coefficient and vacuum energy for a general-symmetry higher spin field in AdS_7 and consider their application to tests of vectorial AdS/CFT with the boundary conformal 6d theory represented by free scalars, spinors or rank 2 antisymmetric tensors.

Virasoro vacuum block at next-to-leading order in the heavy-light limit

We consider the semiclassical limit of the vacuum Virasoro block describing the diagonal 4-point correlation functions on the sphere. At large central charge c, after exponentiation, it depends on two fixed ratios h_H/c and h_L/c, where h_{H, L} are the conformal dimensions of the 4-point function operators. The semiclassical block may be expanded in powers of the light ratio h_L/c and the leading non-trivial (linear) order is known in closed form as a function of h_H/c. Recently, this contribution has been matched against AdS_3 gravity calculations where heavy operators build up a classical geometry corresponding to a BTZ black hole, while the light operators are described by a geodesic in this background. Here, we compute for the first time the next-to-leading quadratic correction O((h_L/c)^{2}), again in closed form for generic heavy operator ratio h_H/c. The result is a highly non-trivial extension of the leading order and may be relevant for further refined AdS_{3}/CFT_{2} tests. Applications to the two-interval Rényi entropy are also presented.

Analysis of higher spin black holes with spin-4 chemical potential

We consider the $AdS_{3}/CFT_{2}$ duality between certain coset WZW theories at large central charge and Vasiliev 3D higher spin gravity with a single complex field. On the gravity side, we discuss a higher spin black hole solution with chemical potential coupled to the spin-4 charge. We compute the perturbative expansion of the higher spin charges and of the partition function at high order in the chemical potential. The result is obtained with its exact dependence on the parameter $λ$ characterising the symmetry algebra $\mbox{hs}[λ]$. The cases of $λ=0,1$ are successfully compared with a CFT calculation. The special point $λ=\infty$, the Bergshoeff-Blencowe-Stelle limit, is also solved in terms of the exact generating function for the partition function. The thermodynamics of both the spin-4 and the usual spin-3 black holes is studied in order to discuss the $λ$ dependence of the BTZ critical temperature $T_{\rm BTZ}(λ)$. In the spin-3 case, it is shown that $T_{\rm BTZ}(λ)$ converges for large $λ$ to the critical point of the $λ=\infty$ known partition function previously found by the authors. In the spin-4 black hole, the picture is qualitatively similar and $T_{\rm BTZ}(\infty)$ is accurately determined by various numerical methods.

On the next-to-leading holographic entanglement entropy in $AdS_{3}/CFT_{2}$

We reconsider the one-loop correction to the holographic entanglement entropy in $AdS_{3}/CFT_{2}$ by analysing the contributions due to a bulk higher spin $s$ current or a scalar field with scaling dimension $Δ$. We consider the two-interval case and work perturbatively in their small cross ratio $x$. We provide various results for the entanglement entropy due to the so-called CDW elements of the associated Schottky uniformization group. In particular, in the higher spin current case, we obtain a closed formula for all the contributions of the form $\mathcal O(x^{2s+p})$ up to $\mathcal O(x^{4s})$, where 2-CDW elements are relevant. In the scalar field case, we calculate the similar contributions for generic values of $Δ$. The terms up to $\mathcal O(x^{2Δ+5})$ are compared with an explicit CFT calculation with full agreement. The analysis exploits various simplifications which are valid in the strict entanglement limit of the Rényi entropy. This allows to identify in a clean way the relevant operators that provide the gravity result. The 2-CDW contributions are also analysed and a closed formula for the leading $\mathcal O(x^{4s})$ coefficient is presented as a function of the generic spin $s$. As a specific application, we combine the CDW and 2-CDW calculations and present the complete $\mathcal O(x^{4s+2})$ entanglement entropy for a spin $s=2,3,4$ higher spin current.

On the one-loop curvature function in the $sl(2)$ sector of $\mathcal N=4$ SYM

We consider twist $J$ operators with spin $S$ in the $sl(2)$ sector of $\mathcal N=4$ SYM. The small spin expansion of their anomalous dimension defines the so-called slope functions. Much is known about the linear term, but the study of the quadratic correction, the curvature function, started only very recently. At any fixed $J$, the curvature function can be extracted at all loops from the $\mathbf{P}μ$-system formulation of the Thermodynamical Bethe Ansatz. Here, we work at the one-loop level and follow a different approach. We present a systematic double expansion of the Bethe Ansatz equations at large $J$ and small winding number. We succeed in fully resumming this expansion and obtain a closed explicit simple formula for the one-loop curvature function. The formula is parametric in $J$ and can be evaluated with minor effort for any fixed $J$. The result is an explicit series in odd-index $ζ$ values. Our approach provides a complete reconciliation between the $\mathbf{P}μ$-system predictions and the large $J$ approach.

Partition function of free conformal higher spin theory

We compute the canonical partition function Z of non-interacting conformal higher spin (CHS) theory viewed as a collection of free spin s CFT's in R^d. We discuss in detail the 4-dimensional case (where s=1 is the standard Maxwell vector, s=2 is the Weyl graviton, etc.), but also present a generalization for all even dimensions d. Z may be found by counting the numbers of conformal operators and their descendants (modulo gauge identities and equations of motion) weighted by scaling dimensions. This conformal operator counting method requires a careful analysis of the structure of characters of relevant (conserved current, shadow field and conformal Killing tensor) representations of the conformal algebra so(d,2). There is also a close relation to massless higher spin partition functions with alternative boundary conditions in AdS_{d+1}. The same partition function Z may also be computed from the CHS path integral on a curved S^1 x S^{d-1} background. This allows us to determine a simple factorized form of the CHS kinetic operator on this conformally flat background. Summing the individual conformal spin contributions Z_s over all spins we obtain the total partition function of the CHS theory. We also find the corresponding Casimir energy and show that it vanishes if one uses the same regularization prescription that implies the cancellation of the total conformal anomaly a-coefficient. This happens to be true in all even dimensions d >= 2.

Semiclassical folded string in AdS4 X CP3

We consider type IIA superstring theory on the background AdS4 x CP3, and the classical solution describing a folded string spinning in AdS4 with angular momentum in CP3. In the 't Hooft limit, it is the gravity dual of twist operators in the ABJM superconformal theory. We quantize the classical solution by algebraic curve methods and determine the first semiclassical correction to the energy. We provide an integral representation for this quantity valid for all values of the charges. We analyze its properties in the special regimes associated with a short or long string providing various accurate analytical expansions. Finally, we investigate various properties of the so-called slope, the leading term of the energy for short strings, collecting information that could be useful in attempts to generalize the exact results recently proposed for the folded string in AdS5 x S5.

N=1 extension of minimal model holography

The CFT dual of the higher spin theory with minimal N = 1 spectrum is determined. Unlike previous examples of minimal model holography, there is no free parameter beyond the central charge, and the CFT can be described in terms of a non-diagonal modular invariant of the bosonic theory at the special value of the 't Hooft parameter lambda=1/2. As evidence in favour of the duality we show that the symmetry algebras as well as the partition functions agree between the two descriptions.

On a discrete symmetry of the Bremsstrahlung function in N=4 SYM

We consider the quark anti-quark potential on the three sphere in planar N=4 SYM and the associated vacuum potential in the near BPS limit with L units of R-charge. The associated Bremsstrahlung function B_L has been recently computed analytically by means of the Thermodynamical Bethe Ansatz. We discuss it at strong coupling by computing it at large but finite L. We provide strong support to a special symmetry of the Bremsstrahlung function under the formal discrete Z_2 symmetry L -> -1-L. In this context, it is the counterpart of the reciprocity invariance discovered in the past in the spectrum of various gauge invariant composite operators. The Z_2 symmetry has remarkable consequences in the scaling limit where L is taken to be large with fixed ratio to the 't Hooft coupling. This limit organizes in inverse powers of the coupling and resembles the semiclassical expansion of the dual string theory which is indeed known to capture the leading classical term. We show that the various higher-order contributions to the Bremsstrahlung function obey several constraints and, in particular, the next-to-leading term, formally associated with the string one-loop correction, is completely determined by the classical contribution. The large L limit at strong coupling is also discussed.

On the partition functions of higher spin black holes

We reconsider black hole solutions of D = 3 higher-spin gravity in the $hs[λ]\oplus hs[λ]$ Chern-Simons formulation. A suitable generalisation of the BTZ black hole has a spin-3 chemical potential $α$, and non-zero values of all the conserved charges associated with the asymptotic $\mathcal W_\infty[λ]$ symmetry. We extend the available perturbative expansion of the partition function to order $\mathcal O(α^{18})$ for generic values of the $λ$ parameter. The result matches the CFT prediction at $λ=0$ and at $λ=1$ where we provide the exact all-order expansion of the partition function. The perturbative series is then analysed in the interesting non-trivial limit $λ\to\infty$ and we derive the exact analytical expressions of the partition function and the spin-4 charge in closed form as functions of $α$. Also, the first subleading correction at large $λ$ is shown to be simply related to the leading contribution.

Quantum corrections to short folded superstring in AdS_3 x S^3 x M^4

We consider integrable superstring theory on AdS_3 x S^3 x M^4 where M^4=T^4 or M^4=S^3 x S^1 with generic ratio of the radii of the two 3-spheres. We compute the one-loop energy of a short folded string spinning in AdS_3 and rotating in S^3. The computation is performed by world-sheet small spin perturbation theory as well as by quantizing the classical algebraic curve characterizing the finite-gap equations. The two methods give equal results up to regularization contributions that are under control. One important byproduct of the calculation is the part of the energy which is due to the dressing phase in the Bethe Ansatz. Remarkably, this contribution E_1^{dressing} turns out to be independent on the radii ratio. In the M^4=T^4 limit, we discuss how E_1^{dressing} relates to a recent proposal for the dressing phase tested in the su(2) sector. We point out some difficulties suggesting that quantization of the AdS_3 classical finite-gap equations could be subtler than the easier AdS_5 x S^5 case.

Resummation of scalar correlator in higher spin black hole background

We consider the proposal that predicts holographic duality between certain 2D minimal models at large central charge and Vasiliev 3D higher spin gravity with a single complex field. We compute the scalar correlator in the background of a higher spin black hole at order $\mathcal O(α^{5})$ in the chemical potential $α$ associated with the spin-3 charge. The calculation is performed at generic values of the symmetry algebra $\mbox{hs}[λ]$ parameter $λ$ and for the scalar in three different representations. We then study the perturbative data in the large $λ$ limit and discover remarkable regularities. This leads to formulate a closed formula for the resummation of the leading and subleading terms that scale like $\mathcal O(α^{n}λ^{2n})$ and $\mathcal O(α^{n}\,λ^{2n-1})$ respectively.

A staggered fermion chain with supersymmetry on open intervals

A strongly-interacting fermion chain with supersymmetry on the lattice and open boundary conditions is analysed. The local coupling constants of the model are staggered, and the properties of the ground states as a function of the staggering parameter are examined. In particular, a connection between certain ground-state components and solutions of non-linear recursion relations associated with the Painlevé VI equation is conjectured. Moreover, various local occupation probabilities in the ground state have the so-called scale-free property, and allow for an exact resummation in the limit of infinite system size.

Leading quantum correction to energy of "short" spiky strings

We consider semiclassical quantization of spiky strings spinning in AdS_3 part of AdS_5 X S^5 using integrability-based (algebraic curve) method. In the "short string" (small spin) limit the expansion of string energy starts with its flat-space expression. We compute the leading quantum string correction to "short" spiky string energy and find the explicit form of the corresponding 1-loop coefficient a_01. It turns out to be rational and expressed in terms of the harmonic sums as functions of the number n of spikes. In the special case of n=2 when the spiky string reduces to the single-folded spinning string the coefficient a_01 takes the value (-1/4) found in arXiv:1102.1040. We also consider a similar computation for the m-folded string and more general spiky string with an extra "winding" number, finding similar expressions for a_01. These results may be useful for a description of energies of higher excited states in the quantum AdS_5 X S^5 string spectrum, generalizing earlier discussions of the string counterparts of the Konishi operator.

More about "short" spinning quantum strings

We continue investigation of the spectrum of semiclassical quantum strings in AdS5 x S5 on the examples of folded (S,J) string (with spin S in AdS5 and orbital momentum J in S5) dual to an sl(2) sector state in gauge theory and its (J',J) counterpart with spin J' in S5 dual to an su(2) sector state. We study the limits of small spins and large J at weak and strong coupling, pointing out that terms linear in spins provide a generalization of "protected" coefficients in the energy that are given by finite polynomials in 't Hooft coupling λ (or square of string tension) for any value of λ. We propose an expression for the coefficient of the term linear in spin J' in the (J',J) string energy which should be the su(2) sector counterpart of the "slope function" in the sl(2) sector suggested by Basso in arXiv:1109.3154.

Resummation of semiclassical short folded string

We reconsider semiclassical quantization of folded string spinning in AdS_3 part of AdS_5 X S^5 using integrability-based (algebraic curve) method. We focus on the "short string" (small spin S) limit with the angular momentum J in S^5 scaled down according to \cal J = rho \sqrt \cal S in terms of the variables \cal J = J/\sqrtλ, \cal S = S/\sqrtλ. The semiclassical string energy in this particular scaling limit admits the double expansion E = \sum_{n=0}^{\infty}\sum_{p=0}^{\infty} (\sqrtλ)^{1-n}\,a_{n,p}(rho)\, \cal S^{p+1/2}. It behaves smoothly as J -> 0 and partially resums recent results by Gromov and Valatka. We explicitly compute various one-loop coefficients a_{1,p}(rho) by summing over the fluctuation frequencies for integrable perturbations around the classical solution. For the simple folded string, the result agrees with what could be derived exploiting a recent conjecture of Basso. However, the method can be extended to more general situations. As an example, we consider the m-folded string where Basso's conjecture fails. For this classical solution, we present the exact values of a_{1,0}(rho) and a_{1,1}(rho) for m=2, 3, 4, 5 and explain how to work out the general case.

Semiclassical energy of the $AdS_4 \times \mathbb{CP}^3$ folded string

We consider the classical solution describing a folded type IIA string in the background $AdS_4 \times \mathbb{CP}^3$. The string is spinning in $AdS$ and has angular momentum in $\mathbb{CP}^3$. In the 't Hooft limit, this is the gravity dual of twist operators in the ABJM superconformal theory. We quantize the classical solution by algebraic curve methods and determine the first semiclassical correction to the energy. An integral representation is given, valid for all values of the charges. We analyze its properties in the special regimes associated with a short or long string. Finally, we investigate various properties of the leading term of the energy for short strings (the so-called slope).

Wrapping corrections beyond the sl(2) sector in N=4 SYM

The sl(2) sector of N=4 SYM theory has been much studied and the anomalous dimensions of those operators are well known. Nevertheless, many interesting operators are not included in this sector. We consider a class of twist operators beyond the sl(2) subsector introduced by Freyhult, Rej and Zieme. They are spin n, length-3 operators. At one-loop they can be identified with three gluon operators. At strong coupling, they are associated with spinning strings with two spins in AdS_5 space and charge in S^5. We exploit the Y-system to compute the leading weak-coupling four loop wrapping correction to their anomalous dimension. The result is written in closed form as a function of the spin n. We combine the wrapping correction with the known four loop asymptotic Bethe Ansatz contribution and analyze special limits in the spin n. In particular, at large n, we prove that a generalized Gribov-Lipatov reciprocity holds. At negative unphysical spin, we present a simple BFKL-like equation predicting the rightmost leading poles.

Large spin expansion of the wrapping correction to Freyhult-Rej-Zieme twist operators

Twist operators in the closed sl(2) sector of planar N=4 SYM are characterized by their spin. The explicit dependence of anomalous dimensions on this important parameter is a source of interesting information. Wrapping corrections are a non trivial part of the calculation and are under control in the framework of thermodynamical Bethe Ansatz valid for the full theory and thoroughly checked in that sector. The extension to more general twist operators beyond sl(2) has been recently accomplished for the so-called 3-gluon operators that are a special case of the generalized twist operators introduced by Freyhult, Rej and Zieme. Such operators are dual to spinning strings configurations with two spins S1, S2 in AdS_5 and charge in S^5. We compute the expansion of the weak-coupling leading order wrapping correction in the gauge theory limit dual to large S1 and fixed S2. We present a simple algorithm for the calculation and provide explicit results illustrating the general structure of the expansion.

On wrapping corrections to GKP-like operators

In the recent paper arXiv:1010.5009, Maldacena et al. derive the two loop expressions for polygonal Wilson loops expectation values, or MHV amplitudes, by writing them as sums over exchanges of intermediate free particles. The spectrum of excitations of the flux tube between two null Wilson lines can be viewed as the spectrum of excitations around the infinite spin limit of finite twist operators in the sl(2) sector of N=4 SYM or the Gubser-Klebanov-Polyakov (GKP) string. This regime can be captured exploiting integrability and assuming that wrapping corrections are negligible compared to asymptotic Bethe Ansatz contributions. This assumption holds true for the N=4 SYM background GKP string, but deserves further analysis for excited states. Here, we investigate GKP cousins by considering various classes of (generalized) twist operators in beta-deformed N=4 SYM and ABJM theory. We show that the Y-system of Gromov-Kazakov-Vieira easily leads to accurate large spin expansions of the wrapping correction at lowest order in weak-coupling perturbation theory. As a byproduct, we confirm that wrapping corrections are subleading in all the considered cases.

Quantum folded string in S^5 and the Konishi multiplet at strong coupling

The Konishi superconformal multiplet is an important theoretical laboratory where one can test AdS/CFT methods to compute strong coupling corrections to the spectrum of superstrings in AdS_5 x S^5. In particular, one can exploit integrability for finite charge states/operators. The multiplet ground state is a singlet operator with two simple descendants in the rank-1 sectors sl(2) and su(2) of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. Recently, the next-to-leading quantum correction to the sl(2) state has been computed. Here, we use the algebraic curve approach to determine the correction to the other state recovering universality of the correction inside the multiplet.

At strong coupling, they are associated with spinning strings with two spins in AdS5. We exploit the Y-system to compute the leading weak-coupling four loop wrapping correction to their anomalous dimension. The result is written in closed form as a function of the spin N. We combine the wrapping correction with the known four-loop asymptotic Bethe Ansatz contribution and analyze special limits in the spin N. A numerical test of the Y-system in the small size limit of the SU(2)x SU(2) Principal Chiral Model

Recently, Kazakov, Gromov and Vieira applied the discrete Hirota dynamics to study the finite size spectra of integrable two dimensional quantum field theories. The method has been tested from large values of the size L down to moderate values using the SU(2) x SU(2) principal chiral model as a theoretical laboratory. We continue the numerical analysis of the proposed non-linear integral equations showing that the deep ultraviolet region L -> 0 is numerically accessible. To this aim, we introduce a relaxed iterative algorithm for the numerical computation of the low-lying part of the spectrum in the U(1) sector. We discuss in details the systematic errors involved in the computation. When a comparison is possible, full agreement is found with previous TBA computations.

Counting charged massless states in the (0,2) heterotic CFT/geometry connection

We use simple current techniques and their relation to orbifolds with discrete torsion for studying the (0,2) CFT/geometry duality with non-rational internal N=2 SCFTs. Explicit formulas for the charged spectra of heterotic SO(10) GUT models are computed in terms of their extended Poincaré polynomials and the complementary Poincaré polynomial which can be computed in terms of the elliptic genera. While non-BPS states contribute to the charged spectrum, their contributions can be determined also for non-rational cases. For model building, with generalizations to SU(5) and SM gauge groups, one can take advantage of the large class of Landau-Ginzburg orbifold examples.

Semiclassical short strings in AdS_5 x S^5

We present results for the one-loop correction to the energy of a class of string solutions in AdS_5 x S^5 in the short string limit. The computation is based on the observation that, as for rigid spinning string elliptic solutions, the fluctuation operators can be put into the single-gap Lame' form. Our computation reveals a remarkable universality of the form of the energy of short semiclassical strings. This may help to understand better the structure of the strong coupling expansion of the anomalous dimensions of dual gauge theory operators.

Reciprocity and integrability in the sl(2) sector of N=4 SYM

We analyze the higher conserved charges of type IIB superstring on AdS5 x S5 from the perspective of a recently discovered generalized Gribov-Lipatov reciprocity. We provide several evidences that reciprocity holds for all the higher charges and not only for the energy. This is discussed in the simple case of twist L=2, and 3 operators in the sl(2) subsector at (a) multi-loop level in weak coupling, (b) classical level at strong coupling for the dual folded string.

The generalized scaling function of AdS/CFT and semiclassical string theory

Recently, Freyhult, Rej and Staudacher (FRS) proposed an integral equation determining the leading logarithmic term of the anomalous dimension of sl(2) twist-operators in N=4 SYM for large Lorentz spin M and twist L at fixed j = L/log(M). We discuss the large j limit of the FRS equation. This limit can be matched with the {\em fast long string} limit of AdS_5 X S^5 superstring perturbation theory at all couplings. In particular, a certain part of the classical and one-loop string result is known to be protected and can be computed in the weakly coupled large-j limit of the FRS equation. We present various analytical and numerical results supporting agreement at one and two loops in the gauge theory.

Highest states in light-cone $AdS_5\times S^5$ superstring

We study the highest states in the compact rank-1 sectors of the AdS5 X S5 superstring in the framework of the recently proposed light cone Bethe Ansatz equations. In the su(1|1) sector we present strong coupling expansions in the two limits L,lambda -> OO (expanding in power of lambda^{-1/4} with fixed large L) and lambda, L -> OO (expanding in power of 1/L with fixed large lambda) where lambda is the 't Hooft coupling and L is the number of Bethe momenta. The two limits do not commute apart from the leading term which reproduces the result obtained with the Arutyunov-Frolov-Staudacher phase in the lambda, L -> OO limit. In the su(2) sector we perform the strong coupling expansions in the L->OO limit up to O(lambda^{-1/4}), and our result is in agreement with previuos String Bethe Ansatz analysis.

On the supersymmetric vacua of the Veneziano-Wosiek model

We study the supersymmetric vacua of the Veneziano-Wosiek model in sectors with fermion number F=2, 4 at finite 't Hooft coupling lambda. We prove that for F=2 there are two zero energy vacua for lambda > lambda_c = 1 and none otherwise. We give the analytical expressions of both vacua. One of them was previously known, the second one is obtained by solving the cohomology of the supersymmetric charges. At F=4 we compute the would-be supersymmetric vacua at high order in the the strong coupling expansion and provide strong support to the conclusion that lambda = 1 is a critical point in this sector too. It separates a strong coupling phase with two symmetric vacua from a weak coupling phase with positive spectrum.

The scaling function at strong coupling from the quantum string Bethe equations

We study at strong coupling the scaling function describing the large spin anomalous dimension of twist two operators in ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. In the spirit of AdS/CFT duality, it is possible to extract it from the string Bethe Ansatz equations in the $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$ sector of the $\ads$ superstring. To this aim, we present a detailed analysis of the Bethe equations by numerical and analytical methods. We recover several short string semiclassical results as a check. In the more difficult case of the long string limit providing the scaling function, we analyze the strong coupling version of the Eden-Staudacher equation, including the Arutyunov-Frolov-Staudacher phase. We prove that it admits a unique solution, at least in perturbation theory, leading to the correct prediction consistent with semiclassical string calculations.

Bethe Ansatz solutions for highest states in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM and AdS/CFT duality

We consider the operators with highest anomalous dimension $Δ$ in the compact rank-one sectors $\mathfrak{su}(1|1)$ and $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ of ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills. We study the flow of $Δ$ from weak to strong 't Hooft coupling $λ$ by solving (i) the all-loop gauge Bethe Ansatz, (ii) the quantum string Bethe Ansatz. The two calculations are carefully compared in the strong coupling limit and exhibit different exponents $ν$ in the leading order expansion $Δ\sim λ^ν$. We find $ν= 1/2$ and $ν= 1/4$ for the gauge or string solution. This strong coupling discrepancy is not unexpected, and it provides an explicit example where the gauge Bethe Ansatz solution cannot be trusted at large $λ$. Instead, the string solution perfectly reproduces the Gubser-Klebanov-Polyakov law $Δ= 2\sqrt{n} λ^{1/4}$. In particular, we provide an analytic expression for the integer level $n$ as a function of the U(1) charge in both sectors.

Density Matrix Renormalization Group Study of the Disorder Line in the Quantum ANNNI Model

We apply Density Matrix Renormalization Group methods to study the phase diagram of the quantum ANNNI model in the region of low frustration where the ferromagnetic coupling is larger than the next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic one. By Finite Size Scaling on lattices with up to 80 sites we locate precisely the transition line from the ferromagnetic phase to a paramagnetic phase without spatial modulation. We then measure and analyze the spin-spin correlation function in order to determine the disorder transition line where a modulation appears. We give strong numerical support to the conjecture that the Peschel-Emery one-dimensional line actually coincides with the disorder line. We also show that the critical exponent governing the vanishing of the modulation parameter at the disorder transition is $β_q = 1/2$.

Sudakov expansions at one loop and beyond for charged scalar and fermion pair production in SUSY models at future Linear Colliders

We give the general expressions of the leading quadratic and subleading linear logarithms that appear at the one loop level, and derive the corresponding resummed expansions to \underline{subleading} logarithmic order accuracy. Under the assumption of a relatively light SUSY scenario and choosing the MSSM as a specific model, we compare the predictions of the one-loop and of the resummed expansions at variable energy. Green Function Simulation of Hamiltonian Lattice Models with Stochastic Reconfiguration

We apply a recently proposed Green Function Monte Carlo to the study of Hamiltonian lattice gauge theories. This class of algorithms computes quantum vacuum expectation values by averaging over a set of suitable weighted random walkers. By means of a procedure called Stochastic Reconfiguration the long standing problem of keeping fixed the walker population without a priori knowledge on the ground state is completely solved. In the $U(1)_2$ model, which we choose as our theoretical laboratory, we evaluate the mean plaquette and the vacuum energy per plaquette. We find good agreement with previous works using model dependent guiding functions for the random walkers.
