$1/N$ expansion of circular Wilson loop in $\mathcal N=2$ superconformal $SU(N)\times SU(N)$ quiver

Localization approach to $\mathcal N=2$ superconformal $SU(N) \times SU(N)$ quiver theory leads to a non-Gaussian two-matrix model representation for the expectation value of BPS circular $SU(N)$ Wilson loop $\langle\mathcal W\rangle$. We study the subleading $1/N^2$ term in the large $N$ expansion of $\langle\mathcal W\rangle$ at weak and strong coupling. We concentrate on the case of the symmetric quiver with equal gauge couplings which is equivalent to the $\mathbb Z_{2}$ orbifold of the $SU(2N)$ $\mathcal N=4$ SYM theory. This orbifold gauge theory should be dual to type IIB superstring in ${\rm AdS}_5\times (S^{5}/\mathbb Z_{2})$. We present a string theory argument suggesting that the $1/N^2$ term in $\langle\mathcal W\rangle$ in the orbifold theory should have the same strong-coupling asymptotics $ λ^{3/2}$ as in the $\mathcal N=4$ SYM case. We support this prediction by a numerical study of the localization matrix model on the gauge theory side. We also find a relation between the $1/N^2$ term in the Wilson loop expectation value and the derivative of the free energy of the orbifold gauge theory on 4-sphere.

BPS Wilson loop in $\mathcal N=2$ superconformal $SU(N)$ "orientifold" gauge theory and weak-strong coupling interpolation

We consider the expectation value $\langle \cal W \rangle$ of the circular BPS Wilson loop in ${\cal N}=2$ superconformal $SU(N)$ gauge theory containing a vector multiplet coupled to two hypermultiplets in rank-2 symmetric and antisymmetric representations. This model admits a regular large $N$ expansion, is planar-equivalent to ${\cal N}=4$ SYM theory and is expected to be dual to a certain orbifold/orientifold projection of AdS$_5\times S^5$ superstring theory. On the string theory side $\langle\cal W \rangle $ is represented by the path integral expanded near the same AdS$_2$ minimal surface as in the maximally supersymmetric case. Following the string theory argument in arXiv:2007.08512, we suggest that as in the ${\cal N}=4$ SYM case and in the ${\cal N}=2$ $SU(N) \times SU(N)$ superconformal quiver theory discussed in arXiv:2102.07696, the coefficient of the leading non-planar $1/N^2$ correction in $\langle\cal W \rangle $ should have the universal $λ^{3/2}$ scaling at large 't Hooft coupling. We confirm this prediction by starting with the localization matrix model representation for $\langle\cal W \rangle $. We complement the analytic derivation of the $λ^{3/2}$ scaling by a numerical high-precision resummation and extrapolation of the weak-coupling expansion using conformal mapping improved Padé analysis.

On type 0 string theory in solvable RR backgrounds

Motivated by a possibility of solving non-supersymmetric type 0 string theory in $AdS_5 \times S^5$ background using integrability, we revisit the construction of type 0 string spectrum in some solvable examples of backgrounds with RR fluxes that are common to type IIB and type 0B theories. The presence of RR fluxes requires the use of a Green-Schwarz description for type 0 string theory. Like in flat space, the spectrum of type 0 theory can be derived from the type II theory spectrum by a $(-1)^F$ orbifolding, i.e. combining the untwisted sector where GS fermions are periodic with the twisted sector where GS fermions are antiperiodic (and projecting out all spacetime fermionic states). This construction of the type 0 spectrum may also be implemented using a Melvin background that allows to continuously interpolate between the type II and type 0 theories. As an illustration, we discuss the type 0B spectrum in the pp-wave background which is the Penrose limit of $AdS_5 \times S^5$ with RR 5-form flux and also in the pp-wave background which is the Penrose limit of $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$ supported by mixed RR and NSNS 3-form fluxes. We show that increasing the strength of the RR flux increases the value of the effective normal ordering constant (which determines the mass of the type 0 tachyon) and thus effectively decreases the momentum-space domain of instability of the ground state. We also comment on the semiclassical sector of states of type 0B theory in $AdS_5 \times S^5$.

Higher order RG flow on the Wilson line in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM

Extending earlier work, we find the two-loop term in the beta-function for the scalar coupling $ζ$ in a generalized Wilson loop operator of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory, working in the planar weak-coupling expansion. The beta-function for $ζ$ has fixed points at $ζ=\pm 1$ and $ζ=0$, corresponding respectively to the supersymmetric Wilson-Maldacena loop and to the standard Wilson loop without scalar coupling. As a consequence of our result for the beta-function, we obtain a prediction for the two-loop term in the anomalous dimension of the scalar field inserted on the standard Wilson loop. We also find a subset of higher-loop contributions (with highest powers of $ζ$ at each order in `t Hooft coupling) coming from the scalar ladder graphs determining the corresponding terms in the five-loop beta-function. We discuss the related structure of the circular Wilson loop expectation value commenting, in particular, on consistency with a 1d defect version of the F-theorem. We also compute (to two loops in the planar ladder approximation) the two-point correlators of scalars inserted on the Wilson line.

Boundary correlators in WZW model on AdS$_2$

Boundary correlators of elementary fields in some 2d conformal field theories defined on AdS$_2$ have a particularly simple structure. For example, the correlators of the Liouville scalar happen to be the same as the correlators of the chiral component of the stress tensor on a plane restricted to the real line. Here we show that an analogous relation is true also in the WZW model: boundary correlators of the WZW scalars have the same structure as the correlators of chiral Kač-Moody currents. This is checked at the level of the tree and one-loop Witten diagrams in AdS$_2$. We also compute some tree-level correlators in a generic $σ$-model defined on AdS$_2$ and show that they simplify only in the WZW case where an extra Kač-Moody symmetry appears. In particular, the terms in 4-point correlators having logarithmic dependence on 1d cross-ratio cancel only at the WZW point. One motivation behind this work is to learn how to compute AdS$_2$ loop corrections in 2d models with derivative interactions related to the study of correlators of operators on Wilson loops in string theory in AdS.

Generalised Schwarzschild metric from double copy of point-like charge solution in Born-Infeld theory

We discuss possible application of classical double copy procedure to construction of a generalisation of the Schwarzschild metric starting from an $α'$-corrected open string analogue of Coulomb solution. The latter is approximated by a point-like charge solution of the Born-Infeld action, which represents the open string effective action for an abelian vector field in the limit when derivatives of the field strength are small. The Born-Infeld solution has a regular electric field which is constant near the origin, suggesting that corrections from derivative terms in the open string effective action may be small there. The generalization of the Schwarschild metric obtained by the double copy construction from the Born-Infeld solution looks non-singular but the corresponding curvature invariants still blow up at $r=0$. We discuss the origin of this singularity and comment on possible generalisations.

Supersymmetric Liouville theory in AdS$_2$ and AdS/CFT

In a series of recent papers, a special kind of AdS$_2$/CFT$_1$ duality was observed: the boundary correlators of elementary fields that appear in the Lagrangian of a 2d conformal theory in rigid AdS$_2$ background are the same as the correlators of the corresponding primary operators in the chiral half of that 2d CFT in flat space restricted to the real line. The examples considered were: (i) the Liouville theory where the operator dual to the Liouville scalar in AdS$_2$ is the stress tensor; (ii) the abelian Toda theory where the operators dual to the Toda scalars are the $\mathcal W$-algebra generators; (iii) the non-abelian Toda theory where the Liouville field is dual to the stress tensor while the extra gauged WZW theory scalars are dual to non-abelian parafermionic operators. By direct Witten diagram computations in AdS$_2$ one can check that the structure of the boundary correlators is indeed consistent with the Virasoro (or higher) symmetry. Here we consider a supersymmetric generalization: the $\mathcal N=1$ superconformal Liouville theory in AdS$_2$. We start with the super Liouville theory coupled to 2d supergravity and show that a consistent restriction to rigid AdS$_2$ background requires a non-zero value of the supergravity auxiliary field and thus a modification of the Liouville potential from its familiar flat-space form. We show that the Liouville scalar and its fermionic partner are dual to the chiral half of the stress tensor and the supercurrent of the super Liouville theory on the plane. We perform tests supporting the duality by explicitly computing AdS$_2$ Witten diagrams with bosonic and fermionic loops.

Integrable 2d sigma models: quantum corrections to geometry from RG flow

Classically integrable $σ$-models are known to be solutions of the 1-loop RG equations, or "Ricci flow", with only a few couplings running. In some of the simplest examples of integrable deformations we find that in order to preserve this property at 2 (and higher) loops the classical $σ$-model should be corrected by quantum counterterms. The pattern is similar to that of effective $σ$-models associated to gauged WZW theories. We consider in detail the examples of the $η$-deformation of $S^2$ ("sausage model") and $H^2$, as well as the closely related $λ$-deformation of the $SO(1,2)/SO(2)$ coset. We also point out that similar counterterms are required in order for non-abelian duality to commute with RG flow beyond the 1-loop order.

Integrable sigma models and 2-loop RG flow

Following arXiv:1907.04737, we continue our investigation of the relation between the renormalizability (with finitely many couplings) and integrability in 2d $σ$-models. We focus on the "$λ$-model," an integrable model associated to a group or symmetric space and containing as special limits a (gauged) WZW model and an "interpolating model" for non-abelian duality. The parameters are the WZ level $k$ and the coupling $λ$, and the fields are $g$, valued in a group $G$, and a 2d vector $A_\pm$ in the corresponding algebra. We formulate the $λ$-model as a $σ$-model on an extended $G \times G \times G$ configuration space $(g, h, \bar{h})$, defining $h $ and $\bar{h}$ by $A_+ = h \partial_+ h^{-1}$, $A_- = \bar{h} \partial_- \bar{h}^{-1}$. Our central observation is that the model on this extended configuration space is renormalizable without any deformation, with only $λ$ running. This is in contrast to the standard $σ$-model found by integrating out $A_\pm$, whose 2-loop renormalizability is only obtained after the addition of specific finite local counterterms, resulting in a quantum deformation of the target space geometry. We compute the 2-loop $β$-function of the $λ$-model for general group and symmetric spaces, and illustrate our results on the examples of $SU(2)/U(1)$ and $SU(2)$. Similar conclusions apply in the non-abelian dual limit implying that non-abelian duality commutes with the RG flow. We also find the 2-loop $β$-function of a "squashed" principal chiral model.

On boundary correlators in Liouville theory on AdS$_{2}$

We consider the Liouville theory in fixed Euclidean AdS$_2$ background. Expanded near the minimum of the potential the elementary field has mass squared 2 and (assuming the standard Dirichlet b.c.) corresponds to a dimension 2 operator at the boundary. We provide strong evidence for the conjecture that the boundary correlators of the Liouville field are the same as the correlators of the holomorphic stress tensor (or the Virasoro generator with the same central charge) on a half-plane or a disc restricted to the boundary. This relation was first observed at the leading semiclassical order (tree-level Witten diagrams in AdS$_2$) in arXiv:1902.10536 and here we demonstrate its validity also at the one-loop level. We also discuss arguments that may lead to its general proof.

On quantum corrections in higher-spin theory in flat space

We consider an interacting theory of an infinite tower of massless higher-spin fields in flat space with cubic vertices and their coupling constants found previously by Metsaev. We compute the one-loop bubble diagram part of the self-energy of the spin 0 member of the tower by summing up all higher-spin loop contributions. We find that the result contains an exponentially UV divergent part and we discuss how it could be cancelled by a tadpole contribution depending on yet to be determined quartic interaction vertex. We also compute the tree-level four-scalar scattering amplitude due to all higher-spin exchanges and discuss its inconsistency with the BCFW constructibility condition. We comment on possible relation to similar computations in AdS background in connection with AdS/CFT.

Supergravity one-loop corrections on AdS_7 and AdS_3, higher spins and AdS/CFT

As was shown earlier, one-loop correction in 10d supergravity on AdS_5 x S^5 corresponds to the contributions to the vacuum energy and boundary 4d conformal anomaly which are minus the values for one n=4 Maxwell supermultiplet, thus reproducing the subleading term in their N^2-1 coefficient in the dual SU(N) SYM theory. We perform similar one-loop computations in 11d supergravity on AdS_7 x S^4 and 10d supergravity on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4. In the AdS_7 case we find that the corrections to the 6d conformal anomaly a-coefficient and the vacuum energy are again minus the ones for one (2,0) tensor multiplet, suggesting that the total a-anomaly coefficient for the dual (2,0) theory is 4 N^3 - 9/4 N - 7/4 and thus vanishes for N=1. In the AdS_3 case the one-loop correction to the vacuum energy or 2d central charge turns out to be equal to that of one free (4,4) scalar multiplet, i.e. is c=+6. This reproduces the subleading term in the central charge c= 6(Q_1 Q_5 +1) of the dual 2d CFT describing decoupling limit of D5-D1 system. We also present the expressions for the 6d anomaly a-coefficient and vacuum energy for a general-symmetry higher spin field in AdS_7 and consider their application to tests of vectorial AdS/CFT with the boundary conformal 6d theory represented by free scalars, spinors or rank 2 antisymmetric tensors.

Partition function of free conformal higher spin theory

We compute the canonical partition function Z of non-interacting conformal higher spin (CHS) theory viewed as a collection of free spin s CFT's in R^d. We discuss in detail the 4-dimensional case (where s=1 is the standard Maxwell vector, s=2 is the Weyl graviton, etc.), but also present a generalization for all even dimensions d. Z may be found by counting the numbers of conformal operators and their descendants (modulo gauge identities and equations of motion) weighted by scaling dimensions. This conformal operator counting method requires a careful analysis of the structure of characters of relevant (conserved current, shadow field and conformal Killing tensor) representations of the conformal algebra so(d,2). There is also a close relation to massless higher spin partition functions with alternative boundary conditions in AdS_{d+1}. The same partition function Z may also be computed from the CHS path integral on a curved S^1 x S^{d-1} background. This allows us to determine a simple factorized form of the CHS kinetic operator on this conformally flat background. Summing the individual conformal spin contributions Z_s over all spins we obtain the total partition function of the CHS theory. We also find the corresponding Casimir energy and show that it vanishes if one uses the same regularization prescription that implies the cancellation of the total conformal anomaly a-coefficient. This happens to be true in all even dimensions d >= 2.

Partition Functions and Casimir Energies in Higher Spin AdS_{d+1}/CFT_d

Recently, the one-loop free energy of higher spin (HS) theories in Euclidean AdS_{d+1} was calculated and matched with the order N^0 term in the free energy of the large N "vectorial" scalar CFT on the S^d boundary. Here we extend this matching to the boundary theory defined on S^1 x S^{d-1}, where the length of S^1 may be interpreted as the inverse temperature. It has been shown that the large N limit of the partition function on S^1 x S^2 in the U(N) singlet sector of the CFT of N free complex scalars matches the one-loop thermal partition function of the Vasiliev theory in AdS_4, while in the O(N) singlet sector of the CFT of N real scalars it matches the minimal theory containing even spins only. We extend this matching to all dimensions d. We also calculate partition functions for the singlet sectors of free fermion CFT's in various dimensions and match them with appropriately defined higher spin theories, which for d>3 contain massless gauge fields with mixed symmetry. In the zero-temperature case R x S^{d-1} we calculate the Casimir energy in the scalar or fermionic CFT and match it with the one-loop correction in the global AdS_{d+1}. For any odd-dimensional CFT the Casimir energy must vanish on general grounds, and we show that the HS duals obey this. In the U(N) symmetric case, we exhibit the vanishing of the regularized 1-loop Casimir energy of the dual HS theory in AdS_{d+1}. In the minimal HS theory the vacuum energy vanishes for odd d while for even d it is equal to the Casimir energy of a single conformal scalar in R x S^{d-1} which is again consistent with AdS/CFT, provided the minimal HS coupling constant is ~ 1/(N-1). We demonstrate analogous results for singlet sectors of theories of N Dirac or Majorana fermions. We also discuss extensions to CFT's containing N_f flavors in the fundamental representation of U(N) or O(N).

Semiclassical equivalence of Green-Schwarz and Pure-Spinor/Hybrid formulations of superstrings in AdS(5) x S(5) and AdS(2) x S(2) x T(6)

We demonstrate the equivalence between the worldsheet one-loop partition functions computed near classical string solutions in the Green-Schwarz and in the pure-spinor formulations of superstrings in AdS(5) x S(5). While their bosonic sectors are the same in the conformal gauge, their fermionic sectors superficially appear to be very different (first vs second derivative kinetic terms, presence vs absence of fermionic gauge symmetry). Still, we show that the quadratic fluctuation spectrum of sixteen fermionic modes of the pure-spinor formulation is the same as in the Green-Schwarz superstring and the contribution of the extra "massless" fermionic modes cancels against that of the pure-spinor ghosts. We also provide evidence for a similar semiclassical equivalence between the Green-Schwarz and the hybrid formulations of superstrings in AdS(2) x S(2) x T(6) by studying several particular examples of string solutions.

Leading quantum correction to energy of "short" spiky strings

We consider semiclassical quantization of spiky strings spinning in AdS_3 part of AdS_5 X S^5 using integrability-based (algebraic curve) method. In the "short string" (small spin) limit the expansion of string energy starts with its flat-space expression. We compute the leading quantum string correction to "short" spiky string energy and find the explicit form of the corresponding 1-loop coefficient a_01. It turns out to be rational and expressed in terms of the harmonic sums as functions of the number n of spikes. In the special case of n=2 when the spiky string reduces to the single-folded spinning string the coefficient a_01 takes the value (-1/4) found in arXiv:1102.1040. We also consider a similar computation for the m-folded string and more general spiky string with an extra "winding" number, finding similar expressions for a_01. These results may be useful for a description of energies of higher excited states in the quantum AdS_5 X S^5 string spectrum, generalizing earlier discussions of the string counterparts of the Konishi operator.

More about "short" spinning quantum strings

We continue investigation of the spectrum of semiclassical quantum strings in AdS5 x S5 on the examples of folded (S,J) string (with spin S in AdS5 and orbital momentum J in S5) dual to an sl(2) sector state in gauge theory and its (J',J) counterpart with spin J' in S5 dual to an su(2) sector state. We study the limits of small spins and large J at weak and strong coupling, pointing out that terms linear in spins provide a generalization of "protected" coefficients in the energy that are given by finite polynomials in 't Hooft coupling λ (or square of string tension) for any value of λ. We propose an expression for the coefficient of the term linear in spin J' in the (J',J) string energy which should be the su(2) sector counterpart of the "slope function" in the sl(2) sector suggested by Basso in arXiv:1109.3154.

On strong-coupling correlation functions of circular Wilson loops and local operators

Motivated by the problem of understanding 3-point correlation functions of gauge-invariant operators in N =4 super Yang-Mills theory we consider correlators involving Wilson loops and a "light" operator with fixed quantum numbers. At leading order in the strong coupling expansion such correlators are given by the "light" vertex operator evaluated on a semiclassical string world surface ending on the corresponding loops at the boundary of AdS_5 x S^5. We study in detail the example of a correlator of two concentric circular Wilson loops and a dilaton vertex operator. The resulting expression is given by an integral of combinations of elliptic functions and can be computed analytically in some special limits. We also consider a generalization of the minimal surface ending on two circles to the case of non-zero angular momentum J in S^5 and discuss a special limit when one of the Wilson loops is effectively replaced by a "heavy" operator with charge J.

Solitonic Strings and BPS Saturated Dyonic Black Holes

We consider a six-dimensional solitonic string solution described by a conformal chiral null model with non-trivial $N=4$ superconformal transverse part. It can be interpreted as a five-dimensional dyonic solitonic string wound around a compact fifth dimension. The conformal model is regular with the short-distance (`throat') region equivalent to a WZW theory. At distances larger than the compactification scale the solitonic string reduces to a dyonic static spherically-symmetric black hole of toroidally compactified heterotic string. The new four-dimensional solution is parameterised by five charges, saturates the Bogomol'nyi bound and has nontrivial dilaton-axion field and moduli fields of two-torus. When acted by combined T- and S-duality transformations it serves as a generating solution for all the static spherically-symmetric BPS-saturated configurations of the low-energy heterotic string theory compactified on six-torus. Solutions with regular horizons have the global space-time structure of extreme Reissner-Nordstrom black holes with the non-zero thermodynamic entropy which depends only on conserved (quantised) charge vectors. The independence of the thermodynamic entropy on moduli and axion-dilaton couplings strongly suggests that it should have a microscopic interpretation as counting degeneracy of underlying string configurations. This interpretation is supported by arguments based on the corresponding six-dimensional conformal field theory. The expression for the level of the WZW theory describing the throat region implies a renormalisation of the string tension by a product of magnetic charges, thus relating the entropy and the number of oscillations of the solitonic string in compact directions.
