Non-adiabatic Hall effect at Berry curvature hot spot

Hot spot of Berry curvature is usually found at Bloch band anti-crossings, where the Hall effect due to the Berry phase can be most pronounced. With small gaps there, the adiabatic limit for the existing formulations of Hall current can be exceeded in a moderate electric field. Here we present a theory of non-adiabatic Hall effect, capturing non-perturbatively the across gap electron-hole excitations by the electric field. We find a general connection between the field induced electron-hole coherence and intrinsic Hall velocity. In coherent evolution, the electron-hole coherence can manifest as a sizeable ac Hall velocity. When environmental noise is taken into account, its joint action with the electric field favors a form of electron-hole coherence that is function of wavevector and field only, leading to a dc nonlinear Hall effect. The Hall current has all odd order terms in field, and still retains the intrinsic role of the Berry curvature. The quantitative demonstration uses the example of gapped Dirac cones, and our theory can be used to describe the bulk pseudospin Hall current in insulators with gapped edge such as graphene and 2D MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$

Theory of wavepacket transport under narrow gaps and spatial textures: non-adiabaticity and semiclassicality

We generalise the celebrated semiclassical wavepacket approach from the adiabatic to the non-adiabatic regime. A unified description covering both of these regimes is particularly desired for systems with spatially varying band structures where band gaps of various sizes are simultaneously present, e.g. in moiré patterns. For a single wavepacket, alternative to the previous derivation by Lagrangian variational approach, we show that the same semiclassical equations of motion can be obtained by introducing a spatial-texture-induced force operator similar to the Ehrenfest theorem. For semiclassically computing the current, the ensemble of wavepackets based on adiabatic dynamics is shown to well correspond to a phase-space fluid for which the fluid's mass and velocity are two distinguishable properties. This distinction is not inherited to the ensemble of wavepackets with the non-adiabatic dynamics. We extend the adiabatic kinetic theory to the non-adiabatic regime by taking into account decoherence, whose joint action with electric field favours certain form of inter-band coherence. The steady-state density matrix as a function of the phase-space variables is then phenomenologically obtained for calculating the transport current. The result, applicable with a finite electric field, expectedly reproduces the known adiabatic limit by taking the electric field to be infinitesimal, and therefore attains a unified description from the adiabatic to the non-adiabatic situations.

Quantum coherence of the molecular states and their corresponding currents in nanoscale Aharonov-Bohm interferometers

By considering a nanoscale Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer containing a parrallel-coupled double dot coupled to the source and drain electrodes, we investigate the AB phase oscillations of transport current via the bonding and antibonding state channels. The results we obtained justify the experimental analysis given in [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{106}, 076801 (2011)] that bonding state currents in different energy configurations are almost the same. On the other hand, we extend the analysis to the transient transport current components flowing through different channels, to explore the effect of the parity of bonding and antibonding states on the AB phase dependence of the corresponding current components in the transient regime. The relations of the AB phase dependence between the quantum states and the associated current components are analyzed in details, which provides useful information for the reconstruction of quantum states through the measurement of the transport current in such systems. With the coherent properties in the quantum dot states as well as in the transport currents, we also provide a way to manipulate the bonding and antibonding states by the AB magnetic flux.

Transient probing of the symmetry and the asymmetry of electron interference

The transient processes of electron transport in nano-scale devices exhibit special phenomena that exist only in the transient regime. Besides how fast the steady states are approached, one interesting aspect of transient transport arises from its strong dependence on the initial state of the system. Here we address the issue of how the symmetries embedded in the initial state interplay with those of the system structure in the course of transient transports. We explicitly explore the transient currents arising from various initial occupations in a double-quantum-dot Aharonov-Bohm interferometer. We find symmetry relations between the transient in-tunneling and out-tunneling dynamics for initially empty or full quantum dots when the energy levels in the electrodes are symmetrically distributed with respect to the energy levels in the QDs. This is true for whatever applied fluxes. We also find the flux-even components of the currents and the flux-odd components of the currents exhibit distinct cross-lead symmetric relations.

General analytical solution to exact fermion master equation

The exact fermion master equation previously obtained in [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{78}, 235311 (2008); New J. Phys. \textbf{12}, 083013 (2010)] describes the dynamics of quantum states of a principal system of fermionic particles under the influences of external fermion reservoirs (e.g. nanoelectronic systems). Here, we present the general solution to this exact fermion master equation. The solution is analytically expressed in the most intuitive particle number representation. It is applicable to an arbitrary number of orbitals in the principal system prepared at arbitrary initial states. We demonstrate the usefulness of such general solution with the transient dynamics of nanostructured artificial molecules. We show how various initial states can lead to distinct transient dynamics, manifesting a multitude of underlying transition pathways.

Reply to the Comment on "General Non-Markovian Dynamics of Open Quantum System"

This is the reply to the 2nd version of the comment, [arXiv.1312.5286v2], by McCutcheon {\it et al.} on our paper [PRL 109, 170402 (2012)]. Our letter presents three examples. For the steady-state solution of the first example, i.e., the dissipationless part of Eq.(12) in the PRL, the 2nd version of the Comment claimed that "this [dissipationless] regime exists if and only if the total Hamiltonian is unbounded from below, casting serious doubts on the usefulness of this result." In this reply, we show again that the 2nd version of the Comment is also incorrect.

The short-time and long-time behaviors of non-Markovianity measure using two-time correlation functions in open quantum systems

We investigate non-Markovianity measure using two-time correlation functions for open quantum systems. We define non-Markovianity measure as the difference between the exact two-time correlation function and the one obtained in the Markov limit. Such non-Markovianity measure can easily be measured in experiments. We found that the non-Markovianity dynamics in different time scale crucially depends on the system-environment coupling strength and other physical parameters such as the initial temperature of the environment and the initial state of the system. In particular, we obtain the short-time and long-time behaviors of non-Markovianity for different spectral densities. We also find that the thermal fluctuation always reduce the non-Markovian memory effect. Also, the non-Markovianity measure shows non-trivial initial state dependence in different time scales.

Real-time dynamics of spin-dependent transport through a double-quantum-dot Aharonov-Bohm interferometer with spin-orbit interaction

The spin-resolved non-equilibrium real-time electron transport through a double-quantum-dot (DQD) Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer with spin-orbit interaction (SOI) is explored. The SOI and AB interference in the real-time dynamics of spin transport is expressed by effective magnetic fluxes. Analytical formulae for the time-dependent currents, for initially unpolarized spins, are presented. In many cases, there appear spin currents in the electrodes, for which the spins in each electrode are polarized along characteristic directions, pre-determined by the SOI parameters and by the geometry of the system. Special choices of the system parameters yield steady-state currents in which the spins are fully polarized along these characteristic directions. The time required to reach this steady state depends on the couplings of the DQD to the leads. The magnitudes of the currents depend strongly on the SOI-induced effective fluxes. Without the magnetic flux, the spin-polarized current cannot be sustained to the steady states, due to the phase rigidity for this system. For a non-degenerate DQD, transient spin transport can be produced by the sole effects of SOI. We also show that one can extract the spin-resolved currents from measurements of the total charge current.

Precision control of charge coherence in parallel double dot systems through spin-orbit interaction

In terms of the exact quantum master equation solution for open electronic systems, the coherent dynamics of two charge states described by two parallel quantum dots with one fully polarized electron on either dot is investigated in the presence of spin-orbit interaction. We demonstrate that the double dot system can stay in a dynamically decoherence free space. The coherence between two double dot charge states can be precisely manipulated through a spin-orbit coupling. The effects of the temperature, the finite bandwidth of lead, and the energy deviations during the coherence manipulation are also explored.

Coherent control of artificial molecules using an Aharonov-Bohm magnetic flux

Bonding and anti-bonding states of artificial molecules have been realized in experiments by directly coupling two quantum dots. Without a direct coupling between two nearby quantum dots, here we show that a continuous crossover, from symmetric to anti-symmetric molecular state, can be achieved by changing the flux through a double quantum dot Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer. We explicitly present the flux-dependent real-time processes of molecular-state formation. In contrast to the transport current, which has a $2π$ period, the quantum state of the DQD molecule has a $4π$ period in the AB flux.

Dynamically stabilized decoherence-free states in non-Markovian open fermionic systems

Decoherence-free subspaces (DFSs) provide a strategy for protecting the dynamics of an open system from decoherence induced by the system-environment interaction. So far, DFSs have been primarily studied in the framework of Markovian master equations. In this work, we study decoherence-free (DF) states in the general setting of a non-Markovian fermionic environment. We identify the DF states by diagonalizing the non-unitary evolution operator for a two-level fermionic system attached to an electron reservoir. By solving the exact master equation, we show that DF states can be stabilized dynamically.

General non-Markovian dynamics of open quantum systems

We present a general theory of non-Markovian dynamics for open quantum systems. We explore the non-Markovian dynamics by connecting the exact master equations with the non-equilibirum Green functions. Environmental back-actions are fully taken into account. The non-Markovian dynamics consists of non-exponential decays and dissipationless oscillations. Non-exponential decays are induced by the discontinuity in the imaginary part of the self-energy corrections. Dissipationless oscillations arise from band gaps or the finite band structure of spectral densities. The exact analytic solutions for various non-Markovian environments show that the non-Markovian dynamics can be largely understood from the environmental-modified spectra of the open systems.

Transient quantum transport in double-dot Aharonov-Bohm interferometers

Real-time nonequilibrium quantum dynamics of electrons in double-dot Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometers is studied using an exact solution of the master equation. The building of the coherence between the two electronic paths shows up via the time-dependent amplitude of the AB oscillations in the transient transport current, and can be enhanced by varying the applied bias on the leads, the on-site energy difference between the dots and the asymmetry of the coupling of the dots to the leads. The transient oscillations of the transport current do not obey phase rigidity. The circulating current has an anti-symmetric AB oscillation in the flux. The non-degeneracy of the on-site energies and the finite bias cause the occupation in each dot to have an arbitrary flux dependence as the coupling asymmetry is varied.

Intrinsic coherence dynamics and phase localization in Aharonov-Bohm Interferometers

The nonequilibrium real-time dynamics of electron coherence is explored in the quantum transport through the double-dot Aharonov-Bohm interferometers. We solve the exact master equation to find the exact quantum state of the device, from which the changes of the electron coherence through the magnetic flux in the nonequilibrium transport processes is obtained explicitly. We find that the relative phase between the two charge states of the double dot localizes to $\fracπ{2}$ or $-\fracπ{2}$ for all different magnetic flux. This nontrivial phase localization process can be manifested in the measurable occupation numbers.
