Maximal quantum Fisher information for general su(2) parametrization processes

Quantum Fisher information is a key concept in the field of quantum metrology, which aims to enhance the parameter accuracy by using quantum resources. In this paper, utilizing a representation of quantum Fisher information for a general unitary parametrization process, we study unitary parametrization processes governed by su(2) dynamics. We obtain the analytical expression for the Hermitian operator of the parametrization and the maximal quantum Fisher information. We find that the maximal quantum Fisher information over the parameter space consists of two parts, one is quadratic in the time and the other oscillates with the time. We apply our result to the estimation of a magnetic field and obtained the maximal quantum Fisher information. We further discuss a driving field with a time-dependent Hamiltonian and find the maximal quantum Fisher information of the driving frequency attains optimum when it is in resonance with the atomic frequency.

Reply to the Comment on "General Non-Markovian Dynamics of Open Quantum System"

This is the reply to the 2nd version of the comment, [arXiv.1312.5286v2], by McCutcheon {\it et al.} on our paper [PRL 109, 170402 (2012)]. Our letter presents three examples. For the steady-state solution of the first example, i.e., the dissipationless part of Eq.(12) in the PRL, the 2nd version of the Comment claimed that "this [dissipationless] regime exists if and only if the total Hamiltonian is unbounded from below, casting serious doubts on the usefulness of this result." In this reply, we show again that the 2nd version of the Comment is also incorrect.

Fidelity susceptibility and quantum Fisher information for density operators with arbitrary ranks

Taking into account the density matrices with non-full ranks, we show that the fidelity susceptibility is determined by the support of the density matrix. Combining with the corresponding expression of the quantum Fisher information, we rigorously prove that the fidelity susceptibility is proportional to the quantum Fisher information. As this proof can be naturally extended to the full rank case, this proportional relation is generally established for density matrices with arbitrary ranks. Furthermore, we give an analytical expression of the quantum Fisher information matrix, and show that the quantum Fisher information matrix can also be represented in the density matrix's support.

Breakdown of Bose-Einstein distribution in photonic crystals

In the last two decades, considerable advances have been made in the investigation of nano-photonics in photonic crystals. Previous theoretical investigations of photon dynamics were carried out at zero temperature. Here, we investigate micro/nano cavity photonics in photonic crystals at finite temperature. Due to photonic-band-gap-induced non-Markovian dynamics, we discover that cavity photons in photonic crystals do not obey the standard Bose-Einstein statistical distribution. Within the photonic band gap and in the vicinity of the band edge, cavity photons combine nontrivial quantum dissipation with thermal fluctuations to form photon states that can memorize the initial cavity state information. As a result, Bose-Einstein distribution is completely broken down in these regimes, even if the thermal energy is larger than the photonic band gap.

Non-Markovian Dynamics Impact on the Foundations of Statistical Mechanics

The foundations of statistical mechanics, namely how equilibrium hypothesis emerges microscopically from quantum theory, is explored through investigating the environment-induced quantum decoherence processes. Based on the recent results on non-Markovian dynamics [Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 170402 (2012)], we find that decoherence of quantum states manifests unexpected complexities. Indeed, an arbitrary given initial quantum state, under the influence of different reservoirs, can evolve into four different steady states: thermal, thermal-like, quantum memory and oscillating quantum memory states. The first two steady states \textit{de facto} provided a rigorous proof how the system relaxes to thermal equilibrium with its environment. The latter two steady states, with strong non-Markovian effects, will maintain the initial state information and not reach thermal equilibrium, which is beyond the conventional wisdom of statistical mechanics.

Quantum discord and quantum phase transition in spin-1/2 frustrated Heisenberg chain

By using the concept of the quantum discord (QD), we study the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with next-nearest-neighbor interaction. Due to the SU(2) symmetry and $Z_{2}$ symmetry in this system, we obtain the analytical result of the QD and its geometric measure (GMQD), which is determined by the two-site correlators. For the 4-site and 6-site cases, the connection between GMQD (QD) and the eigenenergies was revealed. From the analytical and numerical results, we find GMQD (QD) is an effective tool in detecting both the first-order and the infinite-order quantum-phase-transition points for the finite-size systems. Moreover, by using the entanglement excitation energy and a universal frustration measure we consider the frustration properties of the system and find a nonlinear dependence of the GMQD on the frustration.

Dynamically stabilized decoherence-free states in non-Markovian open fermionic systems

Decoherence-free subspaces (DFSs) provide a strategy for protecting the dynamics of an open system from decoherence induced by the system-environment interaction. So far, DFSs have been primarily studied in the framework of Markovian master equations. In this work, we study decoherence-free (DF) states in the general setting of a non-Markovian fermionic environment. We identify the DF states by diagonalizing the non-unitary evolution operator for a two-level fermionic system attached to an electron reservoir. By solving the exact master equation, we show that DF states can be stabilized dynamically.

General non-Markovian dynamics of open quantum systems

We present a general theory of non-Markovian dynamics for open quantum systems. We explore the non-Markovian dynamics by connecting the exact master equations with the non-equilibirum Green functions. Environmental back-actions are fully taken into account. The non-Markovian dynamics consists of non-exponential decays and dissipationless oscillations. Non-exponential decays are induced by the discontinuity in the imaginary part of the self-energy corrections. Dissipationless oscillations arise from band gaps or the finite band structure of spectral densities. The exact analytic solutions for various non-Markovian environments show that the non-Markovian dynamics can be largely understood from the environmental-modified spectra of the open systems.

Pairwise Quantum Correlations for Superpositions of Dicke States

Pairwise correlation is really an important property for multi-qubit states. For the two-qubit X states extracted from Dicke states and their superposition states, we obtain a compact expression of the quantum discord by numerical check. We then apply the expression to discuss the quantum correlation of the reduced two-qubit states of Dicke states and their superpositions, and the results are compared with those obtained by entanglement of formation, which is a quantum entanglement measure.

Exact non-Markovian cavity dynamics strongly coupled to a reservoir

The exact non-Markovian dynamics of a microcavity strongly coupled to a general reservoir at arbitrary temperature is studied. With the exact master equation for the reduced density operator of the cavity system, we analytically solve the time evolution of the cavity state and the associated physical observables. We show that the non-Markovian dynamics is completely determined by the propagating (retarded) and correlation Green functions. Compare the non-Markovian behavior at finite temperature with those at zero-temperature limit or Born-Markov limit, we find that the non-Markovian memory effect can dramatically change the coherent and thermal dynamics of the cavity. We also numerically study the dissipation dynamics of the cavity through the mean mode amplitude decay and the average photon number decay in the microwave regime. It is shown that the strong coupling between the cavity and the reservoir results in a long-time dissipationless evolution to the cavity field amplitude, and its noise dynamics undergoes a critical transition from the weak to strong coupling due to the non-Markovian memory effect.

Non-Markovian dynamics of a microcavity coupled to a waveguide in photonic crystals

In this paper, the non-Markovian dynamics of a microcavity coupled to a waveguide in photonic crystals is studied based on Fano-type tight binding model. Using the exact master equation, we solve analytically and numerically the temporal evolution of the cavity coherent state and the associated physical observables. A critical transition is revealed when the coupling increase between the cavity and the waveguide. In particular, the cavity field becomes dissipationless when the coupling strength goes beyond a critical value, as a manifestation of strong non-Markovian memory effect. The result also indicates that the cavity can maintain in a coherent state with arbitrary small number of photons when it strongly couples to the waveguide at very low temperature. These properties can be measured experimentally through the photon current flowing over the waveguide in photonic crystals.
