Continuous-state branching processes with spectrally positive migration

Continuous-state branching processes (CSBPs) with immigration (CBIs), stopped on hitting zero, are generalized by allowing the process governing immigration to be any Lévy process without negative jumps. Unlike the CBIs, these newly introduced processes do not appear to satisfy any natural affine property on the level of the Laplace transforms of the semigroups. Basic properties are noted. Explicit formulae (on neighborhoods of infinity) for the Laplace transforms of the first passage times downwards and of the explosion time are derived.

On laws exhibiting universal ordering under stochastic restart

For each of (i) arbitrary stochastic reset, (ii) deterministic reset with arbitrary period, (iii) reset at arbitrary constant rate, and then in the sense of either (a) first-order stochastic dominance or (b) expectation (i.e. for each of the six possible combinations of the preceding), those laws of random times are precisely characterized that are rendered no bigger [rendered no smaller; left invariant] by all possible restart laws (within the classes (i), (ii), (iii), as the case may be). Partial results in the same vein for reset with branching are obtained. In particular it is found that deterministic and arbitrary stochastic restart lead to the same characterizations, but this equivalence fails to persist for exponential (constant-rate) reset.

Copulas for maxmin systems

Under a mild condition we give closed-form expressions for copulas of systems that consist of maxima and of minima of subvectors of a given random vector $X$ with continuous marginals. Said expressions appear explicit in the copula of $X$ and the mentioned condition is for example met when the law of $X$ admits a strictly positive density with respect to Lebesgue measure. In the i.i.d. case these "maxmin" copulae become universal and the conditions on their validity can be dropped entirely. Our main motivation comes from applications to shock models that arise in multivariate survival theory. Another application is to order statistics copulas.

Fluctuation theory for upwards skip-free Lévy chains

A fluctuation theory and, in particular, a theory of scale functions is developed for upwards skip-free Lévy chains, i.e. for right-continuous random walks embedded into continuous time as compound Poisson processes. This is done by analogy to the spectrally negative class of Lévy processes -- several results, however, can be made more explicit/exhaustive in our compound Poisson setting. In particular, the scale functions admit a linear recursion, of constant order when the support of the jump measure is bounded, by means of which they can be calculated -- some examples are considered.

Markov chain approximations to scale functions of Lévy processes

We introduce a general algorithm for the computation of the scale functions of a spectrally negative Lévy process $X$, based on a natural weak approximation of $X$ via upwards skip-free continuous-time Markov chains with stationary independent increments. The algorithm consists of evaluating a finite linear recursion with its (nonnegative) coefficients given explicitly in terms of the Lévy triplet of $X$. Thus it is easy to implement and numerically stable. Our main result establishes sharp rates of convergence of this algorithm providing an explicit link between the semimartingale characteristics of $X$ and its scale functions, not unlike the one-dimensional Itô diffusion setting, where scale functions are expressed in terms of certain integrals of the coefficients of the governing SDE.

Proper two-sided exits of a Lévy process

It is proved that the two-sided exits of a Levy process are proper, i.e. not a.s. equal to their one-sided counterparts, if and only if said process is not a subordinator or the negative of a subordinator. Furthermore, Levy processes are characterized, for which the supports of the first exit times from bounded annuli, simultaneously on each of the two events corresponding to exit at the lower and the upper boundary, respectively are unbounded, contain $0$, are equal to $[0,\infty)$.

A note on the times of first passage for `nearly right-continuous' random walks

A natural extension of a right-continuous integer-valued random walk is one which can jump to the right by one or two units. First passage times above a given fixed level then admit a tractable Laplace transform (probability generating function). Explicit expressions for the probabilities that the respective overshoots are either $0$ or $1$, according as the random walk crosses a given level for the first time either continuously or not, also obtain. An interesting non-obvious observation, which follows from the analysis, is that any such (non-degenerate) random walk will, eventually in $n\in \mathbb{N}\cup \{0\}$, always be more likely to pass over the level $n$ for the first time with overshoot zero, rather than one. Some applications are considered.

Coupled channel analysis of the rho meson decay in lattice QCD

We employ a variational basis with a number of $\bar{q}q$ and $ππ$ lattice interpolating fields with quantum numbers of the $ρ$ resonance to extract the discrete energy spectrum in a finite volume. In the elastic region, this spectrum is related to the phase shift of the continuum scattering amplitude by Lüscher's formula and the relation allows the extraction of resonance parameters from the spectrum calculation. The simulations are performed at three different total momenta of the coupled $\bar q q-ππ$ system, which allows us to extract the p-wave scattering phase at five values of pion relative momenta near the resonance region. The effective range formula describes the phase-shift dependence nicely and we extract the resonance mass $m_ρ=792(7)(8)$ MeV and the coupling $g_{ρππ}=5.13(20)$ at our $m_π\simeq 266 $MeV. The coupling $g_{ρππ}$ is directly related to the width of the $ρ$ meson and our value is close to the value derived from the experimental width. The simulations are performed using dynamical gauge configurations with two mass-degenerate flavors of tree-level improved clover-Wilson fermions. Correlation functions are calculated using the recently proposed distillation method with Laplacian Heaviside (LapH) smearing of quarks, which enables flexible calculations, in many cases with unprecedented accuracy.

Markov chain approximations for transition densities of Lévy processes

We consider the convergence of a continuous-time Markov chain approximation X^h, h>0, to an R^d-valued Levy process X. The state space of X^h is an equidistant lattice and its Q-matrix is chosen to approximate the generator of X. In dimension one (d=1), and then under a general sufficient condition for the existence of transition densities of X, we establish sharp convergence rates of the normalised probability mass function of X^h to the probability density function of X. In higher dimensions (d>1), rates of convergence are obtained under a technical condition, which is satisfied when the diffusion matrix is non-degenerate.
