Ballistic Josephson junctions in edge-contacted graphene

Hybrid graphene-superconductor devices have attracted much attention since the early days of graphene research. So far, these studies have been limited to the case of diffusive transport through graphene with poorly defined and modest quality graphene-superconductor interfaces, usually combined with small critical magnetic fields of the superconducting electrodes. Here we report graphene based Josephson junctions with one-dimensional edge contacts of Molybdenum Rhenium. The contacts exhibit a well defined, transparent interface to the graphene, have a critical magnetic field of 8 Tesla at 4 Kelvin and the graphene has a high quality due to its encapsulation in hexagonal boron nitride. This allows us to study and exploit graphene Josephson junctions in a new regime, characterized by ballistic transport. We find that the critical current oscillates with the carrier density due to phase coherent interference of the electrons and holes that carry the supercurrent caused by the formation of a Fabry-Pérot cavity. Furthermore, relatively large supercurrents are observed over unprecedented long distances of up to 1.5 $μ$m. Finally, in the quantum Hall regime we observe broken symmetry states while the contacts remain superconducting. These achievements open up new avenues to exploit the Dirac nature of graphene in interaction with the superconducting state.

Bias-dependent D'yakonov-Perel' spin relaxation in bilayer graphene

We calculate the spin relaxation time of mobile electrons due to spin precession between random impurity scattering (D'yakonov-Perel' mechanism) in electrically gated bilayer graphene analytically and numerically. Due to the trigonal warping of the bandstructure, the spin relaxation time exhibits an interesting non-monotonic behavior as a function of both the Fermi energy and the interlayer bias potential. Our results are in good agreement with recent four-probe measurements of the spin relaxation time in bilayer graphene and indicate the possibility of an electrically-switched spin device.

Local quenches in frustrated quantum spin chains: global vs. subsystem equilibration

We study the equilibration behavior following local quenches, using frustrated quantum spin chains as an example of interacting closed quantum systems. Specifically, we examine the statistics of the time series of the Loschmidt echo, the trace distance of the time-evolved local density matrix to its average state, and the local magnetization. Depending on the quench parameters, the equilibration statistics of these quantities show features of good or poor equilibration, indicated by Gaussian, exponential or bistable distribution functions. These universal functions provide valuable tools to characterize the various time-evolution responses and give insight into the plethora of equilibration phenomena in complex quantum systems.
