Embedding the Yang-Lee Quantum Criticality in Open Quantum Systems

The Yang-Lee edge singularity is a quintessential nonunitary critical phenomenon accompanied by anomalous scaling laws. However, an imaginary magnetic field involved in this critical phenomenon makes its physical implementation difficult. By invoking the quantum-classical correspondence to embed the Yang-Lee edge singularity in a quantum system with an ancilla qubit, we demonstrate a physical realization of the nonunitary quantum criticality in an open quantum system. Here the nonunitary criticality is identified with the singularity at an exceptional point caused by postselection of quantum measurement.

Lindbladian Many-Body Localization

We discover a novel localization transition that alters the dynamics of coherence in disordered many-body spin systems subject to Markovian dissipation. The transition occurs in the middle spectrum of the Lindbladian super-operator whose eigenstates obey the universality of non-Hermitian random-matrix theory for weak disorder and exhibit localization of off-diagonal degrees of freedom for strong disorder. This Lindbladian many-body localization prevents many-body decoherence due to interactions and is conducive to robustness of the coherent dynamics characterized by the rigidity of the decay rate of coherence.

Universal properties of dissipative Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids: Case study of a non-Hermitian XXZ spin chain

We demonstrate the universal properties of dissipative Tomonaga-Luttinger (TL) liquids by calculating correlation functions and performing finite-size scaling analysis of a non-Hermitian XXZ spin chain as a prototypical model in one-dimensional open quantum many-body systems. Our analytic calculation is based on effective field theory with bosonization, finite-size scaling approach in conformal field theory, and the Bethe-ansatz solution. Our numerical analysis is based on the density-matrix renormalization group generalized to non-Hermitian systems (NH-DMRG). We uncover that the model in the massless regime with weak dissipation belongs to the universality class characterized by the complex-valued TL parameter, which is related to the complex generalization of the $c=1$ conformal field theory. As the dissipation strength increases, the values of the TL parameter obtained by the NH-DMRG begin to deviate from those obtained by the Bethe-ansatz analysis, indicating that the model becomes massive for strong dissipation. Our results can be tested with the two-component Bose-Hubbard system of ultracold atoms subject to two-body loss.

Tachyonic and Plasma Instabilities of $η$-Pairing States Coupled to Electromagnetic Fields

Cooper pairs featuring a nonzero center-of-mass crystal momentum ${\boldsymbol Q}=(π,π, \dots)$ and an off-diagonal long-range order ($η$-pairing states) constitute exact eigenstates of a Hubbard model [C. N. Yang, Phys. Rev. Lett. 63, 2144 (1989)]. Here we show that the $η$-pairing states are rendered dynamically unstable via coupling to dynamical electromagnetic fields. The instability is caused by "tachyonic" electromagnetic fields and unstable plasma modes for attractive and repulsive interactions, respectively. The typical time scale of the growth of the instability is of the order of femtoseconds for electron systems in solids, which places a strict bound on the lifetime of the $η$-pairing states. The decay of the $η$-pairing states leads to enhanced light emission with frequencies shifted from the Hubbard interaction strength for the repulsive case and unattenuated electromagnetic penetration for the attractive case.

Dynamical sign reversal of magnetic correlations in dissipative Hubbard models

In quantum magnetism, the virtual exchange of particles mediates an interaction between spins. Here, we show that an inelastic Hubbard interaction fundamentally alters the magnetism of the Hubbard model due to dissipation in spin-exchange processes, leading to sign reversal of magnetic correlations in dissipative quantum dynamics. This mechanism is applicable to both fermionic and bosonic Mott insulators, and can naturally be realized with ultracold atoms undergoing two-body inelastic collisions. The dynamical reversal of magnetic correlations can be detected by using a double-well optical lattice or quantum-gas microscopy, the latter of which facilitates the detection of the magnetic correlations in one-dimensional systems because of spin-charge separation. Our results open a new avenue toward controlling quantum magnetism by dissipation.

Wannier representation of Floquet topological states

A universal feature of topological insulators is that they cannot be adiabatically connected to an atomic limit, where individual lattice sites are completely decoupled. This property is intimately related to a topological obstruction to constructing a localized Wannier function from Bloch states of an insulator. Here we generalize this characterization of topological phases toward periodically driven systems. We show that nontrivial connectivity of hybrid Wannier centers in momentum space and time can characterize various types of topology in periodically driven systems, which include Floquet topological insulators, anomalous Floquet topological insulators with micromotion-induced boundary states, and gapless Floquet states realized with topological Floquet operators. In particular, nontrivial time dependence of hybrid Wannier centers indicates impossibility of continuous deformation of a driven system into an undriven insulator, and a topological Floquet operator implies an obstruction to constructing a generalized Wannier function which is localized in real and frequency spaces. Our results pave a way to a unified understanding of topological states in periodically driven systems as a topological obstruction in Floquet states.

Laser-induced Kondo effect in ultracold alkaline-earth fermions

We demonstrate that laser excitations can coherently induce a novel Kondo effect in ultracold atoms in optical lattices. Using a model of alkaline-earth fermions with two orbitals, it is shown that the optically coupled two internal states are dynamically entangled to form the Kondo-singlet state, overcoming the heating effect due to the irradiation. Furthermore, a lack of SU($N$) symmetry in the optical coupling provides a peculiar feature in the Kondo effect, which results in spin-selective renormalization of effective masses. We also discuss effects of interorbital exchange interactions, and reveal that they induce novel crossover or reentrant behavior of the Kondo effect owing to control of the coupling anisotropy. The laser-induced Kondo effect is highly controllable by tuning the laser strength and the frequency, and thus offers a versatile platform to study the Kondo physics using ultracold atoms.

Laser-induced phase transitions of topological Kondo insulators

In this paper, we theoretically investigate how laser fields change the nature of topological Kondo insulators(TKIs). By employing a prototypical model of TKIs, we treat the effect of the laser fields with Floquet theory, which gives effective description under high frequency laser fields. We derive the effective model of TKIs under the laser irradiation and discuss its topological properties. We demonstrate a possible realization of Floquet Chern insulators specified by various values of Chern number and reveal how the topological phase changes with increasing the laser light intensity. Furthermore, it is shown that Floquet Weyl semimetals, which have some pairs of Weyl nodes protected topologically, can emerge in the three-dimensional case. We explain how the Weyl nodes are created with varying the strength of the laser field.

Non-equilibrium topological phase transitions in two-dimensional optical lattices

Recently, concepts of topological phases of matter are extended to non-equilibrium systems, especially periodically driven systems. In this paper, we construct an example which shows non-equilibrium topological phase transitions using ultracold fermions in optical lattices. We show that the Rabi oscillation has the possibility to induce non-equilibrium topological phases which are classified into time-reversal-invariant topological insulators for a two-orbital model of alkaline-earth-metal atoms. Furthermore we study the non-equilibrium topological phases using time-dependent Schrieffer-Wolff-type perturbation theory, and we obtain an analytical expression to describe the topological phase transitions from a high-frequency limit of external driving fields.
