The $θ$-vacuum from functional renormalisation

We study topological properties of a quantum mechanical system with $U(1)$-symmetry within the functional renormalisation group (fRG) approach. These properties include the vacuum energy structure and the topological susceptibility. Our approach works with a complexification of the flow equation, and specifically we embed the original symmetry into the complex plane, $U(1)\rightarrow \mathbb{C}$. We compute the effective potential of a given topological sector by restricting ourselves to field configurations with a given generalised non-trivial Chern-Simons numbers. The full potential is directly constructed from these sector potentials. Our results compare well with the benchmark results obtained from solving the corresponding Schrödinger equation.

Higgs scalar potential coupled to gravity in the exponential parametrization in arbitrary gauge

We study the parametrization and gauge dependences in the Higgs field coupled to gravity in the context of asymptotic safety. We use the exponential parametrization to derive the fixed points for the cosmological constant, Planck mass, Higgs mass and its coupling, keeping arbitrary gauge parameters $α$ and $β$, and compare the results with the linear split. We find that the beta functions for the Higgs potential are expressed in terms of redefined Planck mass such that the apparent gauge dependence is absent. Only the trace mode of the gravity fluctuations couples to the Higgs potential and it tends to decouple in the large $β$ limit, but the anomalous dimension becomes large, invalidating the local potential approximation. This gives the limitation of the exponential parametrization. There are also singularities for some values of the gauge parameters but well away from these, we find rather stable fixed points and critical exponents. We thus find that there are regions for the gauge parameters to give stable fixed points and critical exponents against the change of gauge parameters. The Higgs coupling is confirmed to be irrelevant for the reasonable choice of gauge parameters.

Gauge hierarchy problem and scalegenesis

We review the gauge hierarchy problem in the standard model. We discuss the meaning of the quadratic divergence in terms of the Wilsonian renormalization group. Classical scale symmetry, which prohibits dimensionful parameters in the bare action, could play a key role for the understanding of the origin of the electroweak scale. We discuss the scale-generation mechanism, i.e. scalegenesis in scale invariant theories. In this paper, we introduce a scale invariant extension of the SM based on a strongly interacting scalar-gauge theory. It is discussed that asymptotically safe quantum gravity provides a hint about solutions to the gauge hierarchy problem.

Partial bosonisation for the two-dimensional Hubbard model: How well does it work?

Partial bosonisation of the two-dimensional Hubbard model focuses the functional renormalisation flow on channels in which interactions become strong and local order sets in. We compare the momentum structure of the four-fermion vertex, obtained on the basis of a patching approximation, to an effective bosonic description. For parameters in the antiferromagnetic phase near the onset of local antiferromagnetic order, the interaction of the electrons is indeed well described by the exchange of collective bosonic degrees of freedom. The residual four-fermion vertex after the subtraction of the bosonic exchange contribution is small. We propose that similar partial bosonisation techniques can improve the accuracy of renormalisation flow studies also for the case of competing order.

Scalegenesis and fermionic dark matters in the flatland scenario

We propose an extension of the standard model with Majorana-type fermionic dark matters based on the flatland scenario where all scalar coupling constants, including scalar mass terms, vanish at the Planck scale, i.e. the scalar potential is flat above the Planck scale. This scenario could be compatible with the asymptotic safety paradigm for quantum gravity. We search the parameter space so that the model reproduces the observed values such as the Higgs mass, the electroweak vacuum and the relic abundance of dark matter. We also investigate the spin-independent elastic cross section for the Majorana fermions and a nucleon. It is shown that the Majorana fermions as dark matter candidates could be tested by dark matter direct detection experiments such as XENON, LUX and PandaX-II. We demonstrate that within the minimal setup compatible with the flatland scenario at the Planck scale or asymptotically safe quantum gravity, the extended model could have a strong predictability.

Functional renormalization group study of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model at finite temperature and density in an external magnetic field

In this study, we investigate the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model at finite temperature and finite density in an external magnetic field using the functional renormalization group. We investigate the dependence of the position of the ultraviolet fixed point (UVFP) of the four-Fermi coupling constant on the temperature, density, and external magnetic field, and we obtain the chiral phase structure. The UVFP at low temperature and finite chemical potential oscillates in a small external magnetic field, which can be interpreted as the de Haas--van Alphen effect. We also obtain phase diagrams with complex structures, where the phase boundary moves back and forth as the external magnetic field increases in the low temperature and high density region.

Genesis of electroweak and dark matter scales from a bilinear scalar condensate

The condensation of scalar bilinear in a classically scale invariant strongly interacting hidden sector is used to generate the electroweak scale, where the excitation of the condensate is identified as dark matter. We formulate an effective theory for the condensation of the scalar bilinear and find in the self-consistent mean field approximation that the dark matter mass is of $O(1)$ TeV with the spin-independent elastic cross section off the nucleon slightly below the LUX upper bound.

Scale genesis and gravitational wave in a classically scale invariant extension of the standard model

We assume that the origin of the electroweak (EW) scale is a gauge-invariant scalar-bilinear condensation in a strongly interacting non-abelian gauge sector, which is connected to the standard model via a Higgs portal coupling. The dynamical scale genesis appears as a phase transition at finite temperature, and it can produce a gravitational wave (GW) background in the early Universe. We find that the critical temperature of the scale phase transition lies above that of the EW phase transition and below few $O(100)$ GeV and it is strongly first-order. We calculate the spectrum of the GW background and find the scale phase transition is strong enough that the GW background can be observed by DECIGO.

Scale and electroweak first-order phase transitions

We consider phase transitions in the standard model (SM) without the Higgs mass term, which is coupled through a Higgs portal term to an SM singlet, classically scale-invariant gauge sector with SM singlet scalar fields. At lower energies the gauge-invariant scalar bilinear in the hidden sector forms a condensate, dynamically creating a robust energy scale, which is transmitted through the Higgs portal term to the SM sector. A scale phase transition is a transition between phases with zero and nonzero condensates. An interplay between the EW and scale phase transitions is therefore expected. We find that in a certain parameter space both the electroweak (EW) and scale phase transitions can be a strong first-order phase transition. The result is obtained by means of an effective theory for the condensation of scalar bilinear in the mean field approximation.

The RG flow of Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model at finite temperature and density

We study the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model at finite temperature and finite density by using the functional renormalization group. The RG flows of the four-fermi coupling constant in the NJL model are investigated. We obtain the chiral phase boundary in cases of the large-$N$ leading approximation and an improved approximation. The large-$N$ non-leading term at the vanishing temperature has a singularity at the fermi surface. We show that the quantum corrections by the large-$N$ non-leading term largely influence the phase boundary at the low temperature and high density region.
