Black hole shadow and Wandering null geodesics

The role of the wandering null geodesic is studied in a black hole spacetime. Based on the continuity of the solution of the geodesic equation, the wandering null geodesics commonly exist and explain the typical phenomena of the optical observation of event horizons. Moreover, a new concept of `black room' is investigated to relate the wandering null geodesic to the black hole shadow more closely.

Dynamical degrees of freedom for higher genus Riemann surface in (2+1)-dimensional general relativity

A homogeneous two-dimensional metric including the degrees of freedom of Teichmüller deformation is developed. The Teichmüller deformation is incorporated by affine stretching of complex structure. According to Yamada's investigation by pinching parameter, concrete formulation for a higher genus Riemann surface can be realized. We will have a homogeneous standard metric including the dynamical degrees of freedom as Teichmüller deformation in a leading order of the pinching parameter, which would be treated as homogeneous anisotropic metric for a double torus universe, which satisfy momentum constraints.

Perturbations of Cosmological and Black Hole Solutions in Massive gravity and Bi-gravity

We investigate perturbations of a class of spherically symmetric solutions in massive gravity and bi-gravity. The background equations of motion for the particular class of solutions we are interested in reduce to a set of the Einstein equations with a cosmological constant. Thus, the solutions in this class include all the spherically symmetric solutions in general relativity, such as the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker solution and the Schwarzschild (-de Sitter) solution, though the one-parameter family of two parameters of the theory admits such a class of solutions. We find that the equations of motion for the perturbations of this class of solutions also reduce to the perturbed Einstein equations at first and second order. Therefore, the stability of the solutions coincides with that of the corresponding solutions in general relativity. In particular, these solutions do not suffer from non-linear instabilities which often appear in the other cosmological solutions in massive gravity and bi-gravity.

Head-on collision and merging entropy of black holes: reconsideration of Hawking's inequality

We evaluate how much energy can be converted into gravitational radiation in head-on collision of black holes. We estimate it by the area theorem of black hole horizon incorporating merging entropy of colliding black holes from a viewpoint of black hole thermodynamics. Then we obtain an upper bound of energy ratio of the gravitational radiation which is smaller than the upper bound originally derived by Hawking. The fact that this estimation is not inconsistent with the results of both numerical investigations in low- and high-energy head-on collision implies that thermodynamics of coalescing black holes requires the contribution of the merging entropy.

Teichmüller parameters for multiple BTZ black hole spacetime

We investigate the Teichmüller parameters for a Euclidean multiple BTZ black hole spacetime. To induce a complex structure in the asymptotic boundary of such a spacetime, we consider the limit in which two black holes are at a large distance from each other. In this limit, we can approximately determine the period matrix (i.e., the Teichmüller parameters) for the spacetime boundary by using a pinching parameter. The Teichmüller parameters are essential in describing the partition function for the boundary conformal field theory (CFT). We provide an interpretation of the partition function for the genus two extremal boundary CFT proposed by Gaiotto and Yin that it is relevant to double BTZ black hole spacetime.

New Cosmological Solutions in Massive Gravity

We find new, simple cosmological solutions with flat, open, and closed spatial geometries, contrary to the previous wisdom that only the open model is allowed. The metric and the Stückelberg fields are given explicitly, showing nontrivial configurations of the Stückelberg in the usual Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker coordinates. The solutions exhibit self-acceleration, while being free from ghost instabilities. Our solutions can accommodate inhomogeneous dust collapse represented by the Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi metric as well. Thus, our results can be used not only to describe homogeneous and isotropic cosmology but also to study gravitational collapse in massive gravity.

Gravitational collapse in Painlevé-Gullstrand coordinates

We construct an exact solution for the spherical gravitational collapse in a single coordinate patch. To describe the dynamics of collapse, we use a generalized form of the Painlevé-Gullstrand coordinates in the Schwarzschild spacetime. The time coordinate of the form is the proper time of a free-falling observer so that we can describe the collapsing star not only outside but also inside the event horizon in a single coordinate patch. We show the both solutions corresponding to the gravitational collapse from infinity and from a finite radius.

Slow-roll Extended Quintessence

We derive the slow-roll conditions for a non-minimally coupled scalar field (extended quintessence) during the radiation/matter dominated era extending our previous results for thawing quintessence. We find that the ratio $\ddotϕ/3H\dotϕ$ becomes constant but negative, in sharp contrast to the ratio for the minimally coupled scalar field. We also find that the functional form of the equation of state of the scalar field asymptotically approaches that of the minimally coupled thawing quintessence.

Half period theorem of binary black holes

Merging event horizons of the binary black holes is investigated. While recent development of the numerical study of the binary black hole coalescence has shown that their apparent horizons can orbit for many periods, we study the orbital motion of the event horizon. We discuss how many periods their event horizons orbit before their coalescence. Then, we find that they soon merge into one and the black holes cannot orbit for a half period while the apparent horizons can orbit many times.

Topological classification of black Hole: Generic Maxwell set and crease set of horizon

The crease set of an event horizon or a Cauchy horizon is an important object which determines qualitative properties of the horizon. In particular, it determines the possible topologies of the spatial sections of the horizon. By Fermat's principle in geometric optics, we relate the crease set and the Maxwell set of a smooth function in the context of singularity theory. We thereby give a classification of generic topological structure of the Maxwell sets and the generic topologies of the spatial section of the horizon.

Topology of Event Horizon

The topologies of event horizons are investigated. Considering the existence of the endpoint of the event horizon, it cannot be differentiable. Then there are the new possibilities of the topology of the event horizon though they are excluded in smooth event horizons. The relation between the topology of the event horizon and the endpoint of it is revealed. A torus event horizon is caused by two-dimensional endpoints. One-dimensional endpoints provide the coalescence of spherical event horizons. Moreover, these aspects can be removed by an appropriate timeslicing. The result will be useful to discuss the stability and generality of the topology of the event horizon.

Compact Three Dimensional Black Hole: Topology Change and Closed Timelike Curve (minor changes)

We present a compactified version of the 3-dimensional black hole recently found by considering extra identifications and determine the analytical continuation of the solution beyond its coordinate singularity by extending the identifications to the extended region of the spacetime. In the extended region of the spacetime, we find a topology change and non-trivial closed timelike curves both in the ordinary 3-dimensional black hole and in the compactified one. Especially, in the case of the compactified 3-dimensional black hole, we show an example of topology change from one double torus to eight spheres with three punctures.
