Implications of the singularity theorem for the size of a nonsingular universe

A general property of universes without initial singularity is investigated based on the singularity theorem, assuming the null convergence condition and the global hyperbolicity. As a direct consequence of the singularity theorem, the universal covering of a Cauchy surface of a nonsingular universe with a past trapped surface must have the topology of $S^3$. In addition, we find that the affine size of a nonsingular universe, defined through the affine length of null geodesics, is bounded above. In the case where a part of the nonsingular spacetime is described by Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker spacetime, we find that this upper bound can be understood as the affine size of the corresponding closed de Sitter universe. We also evaluate the upper bound of the affine size of our Universe based on the trapped surface confirmed by recent observations of baryon acoustic oscillations, assuming that our Universe has no initial singularity.

Quasinormal modes of charged black holes with corrections from nonlinear electrodynamics

We study quasinormal modes related to gravitational and electromagnetic perturbations of spherically symmetric charged black holes in nonlinear electrodynamics. Beyond the linear Maxwell electrodynamics, we consider a class of Lagrangian with higher-order corrections written by the electromagnetic field strength and its Hodge dual with arbitrary coefficients, and we parametrize the corrections for quasinormal frequencies in terms of the coefficients. It is confirmed that the isospectrality of quasinormal modes under parity is generally violated due to nonlinear electrodynamics. As applications, the corrections for quasinormal frequencies in Euler-Heisenberg and Born-Infeld electrodynamics are calculated, then it is clarified that the nonlinear effects act to lengthen the oscillation period and enhance the damping rate of the quasinormal modes.

$O(d,d;\mathbb{Z})$ invariant Fierz-Pauli massive gravity

We consider an $O(d,d;\mathbb{Z})$ invariant massive deformation of double field theory at the level of free theory. We study Kaluza-Klein reduction on $R^{1,n-1} \times T^{d}$ and derive the diagonalized second order action for each helicity mode. Imposing the absence of ghosts and tachyons, we obtain a class of consistency conditions which include the well known weak constraint in double field theory as a special case. Consequently, we find two-parameter sets of $O(d,d;\mathbb{Z})$ invariant Fierz-Pauli massive gravity theories.

Cuscuton gravity as a classically stable limiting curvature theory

Finding effective theories of modified gravity that can resolve cosmological singularities and avoid other physical pathologies such as ghost and gradient instabilities has turned out to be a rather difficult task. The concept of limiting curvature, where one bounds a finite number of curvature-invariant functions thanks to constraint equations, is a promising avenue in that direction, but its implementation has only led to mixed results. Cuscuton gravity, which can be defined as a special subclass of $k$-essence theory for instance, is a minimal modification of gravity since it does not introduce any new degrees of freedom on a cosmological background. Importantly, it naturally incorporates the idea of limiting curvature. Accordingly, models of cuscuton gravity are shown to possess non-singular cosmological solutions and those appear stable at first sight. Yet, various subtleties arise in the perturbations such as apparent divergences, e.g., when the Hubble parameter crosses zero. We revisit the cosmological perturbations in various gauges and demonstrate that the stability results are robust even at those crossing points, although certain gauges are better suited to analyze the perturbations. In particular, the spatially-flat gauge is found to be ill defined when $H=0$. Otherwise, the sound speed is confirmed to be generally close to unity in the ultraviolet, and curvature perturbations are shown to remain essentially constant in the infrared throughout a bounce phase. Perturbations for a model of extended cuscuton (as a subclass of Horndeski theory) are also studied and similar conclusions are recovered.

Ghost-free resummation of gravitational interactions of a 2-form gauge field

We find that the recently-proposed ghost-free interaction of a 2-form gauge field in four dimensions, which contains derivative couplings in a nonperturbative manner, can be regarded as a resummation of ghostly interaction terms. We investigate the higher derivative structure of this model in a minisuperspace description and demonstrate that the higher derivative terms can be removed by taking appropriate combinations of the Euler-Lagrange equations, while a truncation at a finite order spoils this structure. We also show that this nature is peculiar to four dimensions.

Stability of magnetic black holes in general nonlinear electrodynamics

We study the perturbative stability of magnetic black holes in a general class of nonlinear electrodynamics, where the Lagrangian is given by a general function of the field strength of electromagnetic field $F_{μν}$ and its Hodge dual $\widetilde{F}_{μν}$. We derive sufficient conditions for the stability of the black holes. We apply the stability conditions to Bardeen's regular black holes, black holes in Euler-Heisenberg theory, and black holes in Born-Infeld theory. As a result, we obtain a sufficient condition for the stability of Bardeen's black holes, which restricts $F_{μν}\widetilde{F}^{μν}$ dependence of the Lagrangian. We also show that black holes in Euler-Heisenberg theory are stable for a sufficiently small magnetic charge. Moreover, we prove the stability of black holes in the Born-Infeld electrodynamics even when including $F_{μν}\widetilde{F}^{μν}$ dependence.

Global Spacetime Structure of Compactified Inflationary Universe

We investigate the global spacetime structure of torus de Sitter universe, which is exact de Sitter space with torus identification based on the flat chart. We show that past incomplete null geodesics in torus de Sitter universe are locally extendible. Then we give an extension of torus de Sitter universe so that at least one of the past incomplete null geodesics in the original spacetime becomes complete. However we find that extended torus de Sitter universe has two ill behaviors. The first one is a closed causal curve. The second one is so called quasi regular singularity, which means that there is no global, consistent extension of spacetime where all curves become complete, nevertheless each curve is locally extensible.

Note on Covariant Stückelberg Formalism and Absence of Boulware-Deser Ghost in Bi-gravity

The covariant Stückelberg formalism is applied to bi-gravity in order to revisit the issue of absence of the Boulware-Deser (BD) ghost. We first confirm that the leading order action in the decoupling limit for helicity-2 modes of metrics and helicity-0 mode of Stückelberg perturbations does not lead to higher time derivative in equations of motion, which suggests the absence of the BD ghost. By extending this method, we reconfirm that the BD ghost does not appear for arbitrary order of the perturbations at the decoupling limit in bi-gravity.

Coupling between Galileon and massive gravity with composite metrics

We investigate the coupling between a Galileon scalar field and massive gravity through composite metrics. We derive the full set of equations of motion for a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background, and study linear perturbations around it. Generally, the nonminimal coupling with the composite metric will excite all 6 degrees of freedom of the spatial metric perturbations, one of which may correspond to the Boulware-Deser ghost.

Covariant Stückelberg analysis of de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley massive gravity with a general fiducial metric

The Stückelberg analysis of nonlinear massive gravity in the presence of a general fiducial metric is investigated. We develop a "covariant" formalism for the Stückelberg expansion by working with a local inertial frame, through which helicity modes can be characterized correctly. Within this covariant approach, an extended $Λ_3$ decoupling limit analysis can be consistently performed, which keeps $\bar{R}_{μνρσ}/m^2$ fixed with $\bar{R}_{μνρσ}$ the Riemann tensor of the fiducial metric. In this extended decoupling limit, the scalar mode $π$ acquires self-interactions due to the presence of the curvature of the fiducial metric. However, the equation of motion for $π$ remains of second order in derivatives, which extends the understanding of the absence of the Boulware Deser ghost in the case of a flat fiducial metric.

Perturbations of Cosmological and Black Hole Solutions in Massive gravity and Bi-gravity

We investigate perturbations of a class of spherically symmetric solutions in massive gravity and bi-gravity. The background equations of motion for the particular class of solutions we are interested in reduce to a set of the Einstein equations with a cosmological constant. Thus, the solutions in this class include all the spherically symmetric solutions in general relativity, such as the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker solution and the Schwarzschild (-de Sitter) solution, though the one-parameter family of two parameters of the theory admits such a class of solutions. We find that the equations of motion for the perturbations of this class of solutions also reduce to the perturbed Einstein equations at first and second order. Therefore, the stability of the solutions coincides with that of the corresponding solutions in general relativity. In particular, these solutions do not suffer from non-linear instabilities which often appear in the other cosmological solutions in massive gravity and bi-gravity.

New Cosmological Solutions in Massive Gravity

We find new, simple cosmological solutions with flat, open, and closed spatial geometries, contrary to the previous wisdom that only the open model is allowed. The metric and the Stückelberg fields are given explicitly, showing nontrivial configurations of the Stückelberg in the usual Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker coordinates. The solutions exhibit self-acceleration, while being free from ghost instabilities. Our solutions can accommodate inhomogeneous dust collapse represented by the Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi metric as well. Thus, our results can be used not only to describe homogeneous and isotropic cosmology but also to study gravitational collapse in massive gravity.
