$^{139}$La-NMR study of spin-dynamics coupled with hole mobility in $T$*-type La$_{0.86}$Eu$_{0.86}$Sr$_{0.28}$CuO$_{4-δ}$

In $T$*-type cuprate oxides with five oxygen coordination, little is known about the relationship between the spin correlations and dope carriers. We performed $^{139}$La-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electrical resistivity measurements on an as-sintered (AS) and oxidation annealed (OA) polycrystalline $T$*-type La$_{0.86}$Eu$_{0.86}$S$_{0.28}$CuO$_4$ (LESCO) to investigate its magnetic and superconducting (SC) properties. Upon cooling, the NMR spectrum of AS LESCO broadened below 3 K, at which the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ against the temperature exhibited a maximum, thereby indicating the appearance of static magnetism. The temperature dependence of $1/T_1$ between 3 K and 20 K was similar to that of the resistivity displaying the semiconducting behavior. Furthermore, the energy scale of the transport gap and spin-dynamics estimated was found to be comparable. These results suggest a close connection between the mobility of the doped carriers and low-energy spin-dynamics, as reported for lightly doped $T$-type La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$. In the OA SC sample, we confirmed the absence of a magnetic order and the Korringa relation above 10 K. Therefore, in the $T$*-type LESCO with $x$ = 0.28, the magnetic state coupled with holes drastically turns to the weakly correlated metallic state by oxidation annealing.

Magnetic excitations of Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ observed by inelastic neutron scattering measurement

In this short note, we report on the first inelastic neutron scattering (INS) study on high-energy magnetic excitations in Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$. We observed excitations between $\sim$80 meV and $\sim$180 meV. The peak position of the excitations is consistent with the dispersion of a single magnon determined by resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) measurement. Thus, our results demonstrate that INS and RIXS observe identical excitations in iridate oxides, as in La$_2$CuO$_4$.

Post-growth annealing effects on charge and spin excitations in Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$

We report a Cu K- and L$_3$-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of charge and spin excitations of bulk Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$, with focus on post-growth annealing effects. For the parent compound Nd$_2$CuO$_4$ ($x = 0$), a clear charge-transfer gap is observed in the as-grown state, whereas the charge excitation spectra indicate that electrons are doped in the annealed state. This is consistent with the observation that annealed thin-film and polycrystalline samples of RE$_2$CuO$_4$ (RE = rare earth) can become metallic and superconducting at sufficiently high electron concentrations without Ce doping. For $x = 0.16$, a Ce concentration for which it is known that oxygen reduction destroys long-range antiferromagnetic order and induces superconductivity, we find that the high-energy spin excitations of non-superconducting as-grown and superconducting annealed crystals are nearly identical. This finding is in stark contrast to the significant changes in the low-energy spin excitations previously observed via neutron scattering.

Revisiting the phase diagram of T*-type La$_{1-x/2}$Eu$_{1-x/2}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ using Oxygen $K$-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy

Oxygen $K$-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements were conducted on T*-type La$_{1-x/2}$Eu$_{1-x/2}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LESCO) to estimate the hole density ($n_{\rm h}$) and investigate the oxidation annealing effect on $n_{\rm h}$. A drastic increase in $n_{\rm h}$ due to annealing was found. The increase in $n_{\rm h}$ cannot be explained solely by the oxygen gain due to annealing, suggesting that delocalized holes are introduced into the CuO$_2$ plane. A phase diagram of LESCO was redrawn against $n_{\rm h}$.

Unscaling Superconducting Parameters with $T_c$ for Bi-2212 and Bi-2223: A Magnetotransport Study in the Superconductive Fluctuation Regime

To investigate the origin of the enhanced $T_c$ ($\approx$ 110 K) of the trilayer cuprate superconductor Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$Ca$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{10+δ}$ (Bi-2223), we have performed systematic magnetoresistance (MR) measurements on this superconductor, as well as on the bilayer superconductor, Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi-2212). The in-plane coherence length, $ξ_{ab}$, and the specific-heat jump, $ΔC$, have been estimated using the theory of renormalized superconductive fluctuations, and the doping dependence of these parameters has been qualitatively explained using the Fermi arc approach. A detailed comparison of the superconducting parameters with $T_c$ for these compounds suggests that an additional superconducting condensation energy exists, due to an increase in the number of stacking CuO$_{2}$ planes in a unit cell.

Progress in Neutron Scattering Studies of Spin Excitations in High-Tc Cuprates

Neutron scattering experiments continue to improve our knowledge of spin fluctuations in layered cuprates, excitations that are symptomatic of the electronic correlations underlying high-temperature superconductivity. Time-of-flight spectrometers, together with new and varied single crystal samples, have provided a more complete characterization of the magnetic energy spectrum and its variation with carrier concentration. While the spin excitations appear anomalous in comparison with simple model systems, there is clear consistency among a variety of cuprate families. Focusing initially on hole-doped systems, we review the nature of the magnetic spectrum, and variations in magnetic spectral weight with doping. We consider connections with the phenomena of charge and spin stripe order, and the potential generality of such correlations as suggested by studies of magnetic-field and impurity induced order. We contrast the behavior of the hole-doped systems with the trends found in the electron-doped superconductors. Returning to hole-doped cuprates, studies of translation-symmetry-preserving magnetic order are discussed, along with efforts to explore new systems. We conclude with a discussion of future challenges.

Antiferromagnetic fluctuations in Fe(Se1-xTex)0.92 (x = 0.75, 1) observed by inelastic neutron scattering

Motivated by the discovery of superconductivity in F-doped LaFeAsO, we investigated the magnetic fluctuations in a related compound Fe(Se1-xTex)0.92 (x = 0.75, 1) using neutron scattering techniques. Non-superconducting FeTe0.92 shows antiferromagnetic (AF) ordering with the ordering vector |Q| = 0.97 A-1 (Q = (0.5,0,0.5)) at TN ~ 70 K and a structural transition between tetragonal and monoclinic phases. In the AF monoclinic phase, the low-energy spectral weight is suppressed, indicating a possible gap formation. On the other hand, in the paramagnetic tetragonal phase, we observed a pronounced magnetic fluctuation around at |Q| ~ 0.92 A-1, which is slightly smaller than the commensurate value. In Fe(Se0.25Te0.75)0.92, which does not show magnetic ordering and shows superconductivity at Tc ~ 8 K, we observed that a magnetic fluctuation is located at |Q| ~ 0.9 A-1 at low energies and shifts to a higher value of |Q| ~ 1.2 A-1 at higher energies. The latter value is close to a reciprocal lattice vector Q = (0.5,0.5,0.5) or (0.5,0.5,0), where the AF fluctuations are observed in other FeAs-based materials. The existence of this common characteristic in different Fe-based superconductors suggests that the AF fluctuations may play a important role in superconductivity.

Energy gaps in the failed high-Tc superconductor La1.875Ba0.125CuO4

A central issue on high-Tc superconductivity is the nature of the normal-state gap (pseudogap) in the underdoped regime and its relationship with superconductivity. Despite persistent efforts, theoretical ideas for the pseudogap evolve around fluctuating superconductivity, competing order and spectral weight suppression due to many-body effects. Recently, while some experiments in the superconducting state indicate a distinction between the superconducting gap and pseudogap, others in the normal state, either by extrapolation from high-temperature data or directly from La1.875Ba0.125CuO4 (LBCO-1/8) at low temperature, suggest the ground-state pseudogap is a single gap of d-wave form. Here we report angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) data from LBCO-1/8, collected with improved experimental conditions, that reveal the ground-state pseudogap has a pronounced deviation from the simple d-wave form. It contains two distinct components: a d-wave component within an extended region around the node and the other abruptly enhanced close to the antinode, pointing to a dual nature of the pseudogap in this failed high-Tc superconductor which involves a possible precursor pairing energy scale around the node and another of different but unknown origin near the antinode.
