On the Northcott property for infinite extensions

We start with a brief survey on the Northcott property for subfields of the algebraic numbers $\Qbar$. Then we introduce a new criterion for its validity (refining the author's previous criterion), addressing a problem of Bombieri. We show that Bombieri and Zannier's theorem, stating that the maximal abelian extension of a number field $K$ contained in $K^{(d)}$ has the Northcott property, follows very easily from this refined criterion. Here $K^{(d)}$ denotes the composite field of all extensions of $K$ of degree at most $d$.

Asymptotic Diophantine approximation: The multiplicative case

Let $α$ and $β$ be irrational real numbers and $0<\F<1/30$. We prove a precise estimate for the number of positive integers $q\leq Q$ that satisfy $\|qα\|\cdot\|qβ\|<\F$. If we choose $\F$ as a function of $Q$ we get asymptotics as $Q$ gets large, provided $\F Q$ grows quickly enough in terms of the (multiplicative) Diophantine type of $(α,β)$, e.g., if $(α,β)$ is a counterexample to Littlewood's conjecture then we only need that $\F Q$ tends to infinity. Our result yields a new upper bound on sums of reciprocals of products of fractional parts, and sheds some light on a recent question of Lê and Vaaler.

On a Counting Theorem of Skriganov

We prove a counting theorem concerning the number of lattice points for the dual lattices of weakly admissible lattices in an inhomogeneously expanding box, which generalises a counting theorem of Skriganov. The error term is expressed in terms of a certain function $ν(Γ^\perp,\cdot)$ of the dual lattice $Γ^\perp$, and we carefully analyse the relation of this quantity with $ν(Γ,\cdot)$. In particular, we show that $ν(Γ^\perp,\cdot)=ν(Γ,\cdot)$ for any unimodular lattice of rank 2, but that for higher ranks it is in general not possible to bound one function in terms of the other. Finally, we apply our counting theorem to establish asymptotics for the number of Diophantine approximations with bounded denominator as the denominator bound gets large.

Integral points of fixed degree and bounded height

By Northcott's Theorem there are only finitely many algebraic points in affine $n$-space of fixed degree over a given number field and of height at most $X$. For large $X$ the asymptotics of these cardinalities have been investigated by Schanuel, Schmidt, Gao, Masser and Vaaler, and the author. In this paper we study the case where the coordinates of the points are restricted to algebraic integers, and we derive the analogues of Schanuel's, Schmidt's, Gao's and the author's results.

Number fields without small generators

Let $D>1$ be an integer, and let $b=b(D)>1$ be its smallest divisor. We show that there are infinitely many number fields of degree $D$ whose primitive elements all have relatively large height in terms of $b$, $D$ and the discriminant of the number field. This provides a negative answer to a questions of W. Ruppert from 1998 in the case when $D$ is composite. Conditional on a very weak form of a folk conjecture about the distribution of number fields, we negatively answer Ruppert's question for all $D>3$.

Schanuel's theorem for heights defined via extension fields

Let $k$ be a number field, let $θ$ be a nonzero algebraic number, and let $H(\cdot)$ be the Weil height on the algebraic numbers. In response to a question by T. Loher and D. W. Masser, we prove an asymptotic formula for the number of $α\in k$ with $H(αθ)\leq X$. We also prove an asymptotic counting result for a new class of height functions defined via extension fields of $k$. This provides a conceptual framework for Loher and Masser's problem and generalizations thereof. Moreover, we analyze the leading constant in our asymptotic formula for Loher and Masser's problem. In particular, we prove a sharp upper bound in terms of the classical Schanuel constant.

Counting lattice points and o-minimal structures

Let $Λ$ be a lattice in $\R^n$, and let $Z\subseteq \R^{m+n}$ be a definable family in an o-minimal structure over $\R$. We give sharp estimates for the number of lattice points in the fibers $Z_T={x\in \R^n: (T,x)\in Z}$. Along the way we show that for any subspace $Σ\subseteq\R^n$ of dimension $j>0$ the $j$-volume of the orthogonal projection of $Z_T$ to $Σ$ is, up to a constant depending only on the family $Z$, bounded by the maximal $j$-dimensional volume of the orthogonal projections to the $j$-dimensional coordinate subspaces.

A note on generators of number fields

We establish upper bounds for the smallest height of a generator of a number field $k$ over the rational field $\Q$. Our first bound applies to all number fields $k$ having at least one real embedding. We also give a second conditional result for all number fields $k$ such that the Dedekind zeta-function associated to the Galois closure of $k/\Q$ satisfies GRH. This provides a partial answer to a question of W. Ruppert.

Counting primitive points of bounded height

Let $k$ be a number field and $K$ a finite extension of $k$. We count points of bounded height in projective space over the field $K$ generating the extension $K/k$. As the height gets large we derive asymptotic estimates with a particularly good error term respecting the extension $K/k$. In a future paper we will use these results to get asymptotic estimates for the number of points of fixed degree over $k$. We also introduce the notion of an adelic Lipschitz height generalizing that of Masser and Vaaler. This will lead to further applications involving points of fixed degree on linear varieties and algebraic numbers of fixed degree satisfying certain subfield conditions.

On certain infinite extensions of the rationals with Northcott property

A set of algebraic numbers has the Northcott property if each of its subsets of bounded Weil height is finite. Northcott's Theorem, which has many Diophantine applications, states that sets of bounded degree have the Northcott property. Bombieri, Dvornicich and Zannier raised the problem of finding fields of infinite degree with this property. Bombieri and Zannier have shown that $\IQ_{ab}^{(d)}$, the maximal abelian subfield of the field generated by all algebraic numbers of degree at most $d$, is such a field. In this note we give a simple criterion for the Northcott property and, as an application, we deduce several new examples, e.g. $\IQ(2^{1/d_1},3^{1/d_2},5^{1/d_3},7^{1/d_4},11^{1/d_5},...)$ has the Northcott property if and only if $2^{1/d_1},3^{1/d_2},5^{1/d_3},7^{1/d_4},11^{1/d_5},...$ tends to infinity.

On number fields with nontrivial subfields

What is the probability for a number field of composite degree $d$ to have a nontrivial subfield? As the reader might expect the answer heavily depends on the interpretation of probability. We show that if the fields are enumerated by the smallest height of their generators the probability is zero, at least if $d>6$. This is in contrast to what one expects when the fields are enumerated by the discriminant. The main result of this article is an estimate for the number of algebraic numbers of degree $d=e n$ and bounded height which generate a field that contains an unspecified subfield of degree $e$. If $n>\max\{e^2+e,10\}$ we get the correct asymptotics as the height tends to infinity.

Counting points of fixed degree and given height over function fields

Let $k$ be a finite field extension of the function field $\bfF_p(T)$ and $\bar{k}$ its algebraic closure. We count points in projective space $\Bbb P ^{n-1}(\bar{k})$ with given height and of fixed degree $d$ over the field $k$. If $n>2d+3$ we derive an asymptotic estimate for their number as the height tends to infinity. As an application we also deduce asymptotic estimates for certain decomposable forms.

On the Northcott property and other properties related to polynomial mappings

We prove that if $K/\mathbb{Q}$ is a Galois extension of finite exponent and $K^{(d)}$ is the compositum of all extensions of $K$ of degree at most $d$, then $K^{(d)}$ has the Bogomolov property and the maximal abelian subextension of $K^{(d)}/\mathbb{Q}$ has the Northcott property. Moreover, we prove that given any sequence of finite solvable groups $\{G_m\}_m$ there exists a sequence of Galois extensions $\{K_m\}_m$ with $\text{Gal}(K_m/\mathbb{Q})=G_m$ such that the compositum of the fields $K_m$ has the Northcott property. In particular we provide examples of fields with the Northcott property with uniformly bounded local degrees but not contained in $\mathbb{Q}^{(d)}$. We also discuss some problems related to properties introduced by Liardet and Narkiewicz to study polynomial mappings. Using results on the Northcott property and a result by Dvornicich and Zannier we easily deduce answers to some open problems proposed by Narkiewicz.
