Principal bundles on metric graphs: the $\mathrm{GL}_n$ case

Using the notion of a root datum of a reductive group $G$ we propose a tropical analogue of a principal $G$-bundle on a metric graph. We focus on the case $G=\mathrm{GL}_n$, i.e. the case of vector bundles. Here we give a characterization of vector bundles in terms of multidivisors and use this description to prove analogues of the Weil--Riemann--Roch theorem and the Narasimhan--Seshadri correspondence. We proceed by studying the process of tropicalization. In particular, we show that the non-Archimedean skeleton of the moduli space of semistable vector bundles on a Tate curve is isomorphic to a certain component of the moduli space of semistable tropical vector bundles on its dual metric graph.

A moduli stack of tropical curves

We contribute to the foundations of tropical geometry with a view towards formulating tropical moduli problems, and with the moduli space of curves as our main example. We propose a moduli functor for the moduli space of curves and show that it is representable by a geometric stack over the category of rational polyhedral cones. In this framework the natural forgetful morphisms between moduli spaces of curves with marked points function as universal curves. Our approach to tropical geometry permits tropical moduli problems---moduli of curves or otherwise---to be extended to logarithmic schemes. We use this to construct a smooth tropicalization morphism from the moduli space of algebraic curves to the moduli space of tropical curves, and we show that this morphism commutes with all of the tautological morphisms.

A non-Archimedean analogue of Teichmüller space and its tropicalization

In this article we use techniques from tropical and logarithmic geometry to construct a non-Archimedean analogue of Teichmüller space $\overline{\mathcal{T}}_g$ whose points are pairs consisting of a stable projective curve over a non-Archimedean field and a Teichmüller marking of the topological fundamental group of its Berkovich analytification. This construction is closely related to and inspired by the classical construction of a non-Archimedean Schottky space for Mumford curves by Gerritzen and Herrlich. We argue that the skeleton of non-Archimedean Teichmüller space is precisely the tropical Teichmüller space introduced by Chan-Melo-Viviani as a simplicial completion of Culler-Vogtmann Outer space. As a consequence, Outer space turns out to be a strong deformation retract of the locus of smooth Mumford curves in $\overline{\mathcal{T}}_g$.

Logarithmic Picard groups, chip firing, and the combinatorial rank

Illusie has suggested that one should think of the classifying group of $M_X^{gp}$-torsors on a logarithmically smooth curve $X$ over a standard logarithmic point as a logarithmic analogue of the Picard group of $X$. This logarithmic Picard group arises naturally as a quotient of the algebraic Picard group by lifts of the chip firing relations of the associated dual graph. We connect this perspective to Baker and Norine's theory of ranks of divisors on a finite graph, and to Amini and Baker's metrized complexes of curves. Moreover, we propose a definition of a combinatorial rank for line bundles on $X$ and prove that an analogue of the Riemann-Roch formula holds for our combinatorial rank. Our proof proceeds by carefully describing the relationship between the logarithmic Picard group on a logarithmic curve and the Picard group of the associated metrized complex. This approach suggests a natural categorical framework for metrized complexes, namely the category of logarithmic curves.

Tropicalization is a non-Archimedean analytic stack quotient

For a complex toric variety $X$ the logarithmic absolute value induces a natural retraction of $X$ onto the set of its non-negative points and this retraction can be identified with a quotient of $X(\mathbb{C})$ by its big real torus. We prove an analogous result in the non-Archimedean world: The Kajiwara-Payne tropicalization map is a non-Archimedean analytic stack quotient of $X^{an}$ by its big affinoid torus. Along the way, we provide foundations for a geometric theory of non-Archimedean analytic stacks, particularly focussing on analytic groupoids and their quotients, the process of analytification, and the underlying topological spaces of analytic stacks.

Skeletons and fans of logarithmic structures

We survey a collection of closely related methods for generalizing fans of toric varieties, include skeletons, Kato fans, Artin fans, and polyhedral cone complexes, all of which apply in the wider context of logarithmic geometry. Under appropriate assumptions these structures are equivalent, but their different realizations have provided for surprisingly disparate uses. We highlight several current applications and suggest some future possibilities.
