Promotion of Kreweras words

Kreweras words are words consisting of n A's, n B's, and n C's in which every prefix has at least as many A's as B's and at least as many A's as C's. Equivalently, a Kreweras word is a linear extension of the poset ${\sf V}\times [n]$. Kreweras words were introduced in 1965 by Kreweras, who gave a remarkable product formula for their enumeration. Subsequently they became a fundamental example in the theory of lattice walks in the quarter plane. We study Schützenberger's promotion operator on the set of Kreweras words. In particular, we show that 3n applications of promotion on a Kreweras word merely swaps the B's and C's. Doing so, we provide the first answer to a question of Stanley from 2009, asking for posets with `good' behavior under promotion, other than the four families of shapes classified by Haiman in 1992. We also uncover a strikingly simple description of Kreweras words in terms of Kuperberg's $\mathfrak{sl}_3$-webs, and Postnikov's trip permutation associated with any plabic graph. In this description, Schützenberger's promotion corresponds to rotation of the web.

A combinatorial classification of 2-regular simple modules for Nakayama algebras

Enomoto showed for finite dimensional algebras that the classification of exact structures on the category of finitely generated projective modules can be reduced to the classification of 2-regular simple modules. In this article, we give a combinatorial classification of 2-regular simple modules for Nakayama algebras and we use this classification to answer several natural questions such as when there is a unique exact structure on the category of finitely generated projective modules for Nakayama algebras. We also classify 1-regular simple modules, quasi-hereditary Nakayama algebras and Nakayama algebras of global dimension at most two. It turns out that most classes are enumerated by well-known combinatorial sequences, such as Fibonacci, Riordan and Narayana numbers. We first obtain interpretations in terms of the Auslander-Reiten quiver of the algebra using homological algebra, and then apply suitable bijections to relate these to combinatorial statistics on Dyck paths.

A combinatorial approach to classical representation theory

A fundamental problem from invariant theory is to describe the endomorphism algebra of multilinear functions on a representation V invariant under the action of a group G. According to Weyl's classic, a first main (later: fundamental) theorem of invariant theory provides a finite spanning set for this algebra, whereas a a second main theorem describes the linear relations between those basic invariants. We use diagrammatic methods to carry Weyl's programme a step further, providing explicit bases for the subspace of the r-th tensor powers of V invariant under the action of G, that are additionally preserved by the action of the long cycle of the symmetric group on r letters. The representations we study are essentially those that occur in Weyl's book: the defining representations of the symplectic groups, the defining representations of the symmetric groups considered as linear representations, and the adjoint representations of the linear groups. In particular, we present a transparent, combinatorial proof of a second fundamental theorem for the defining representation of the symplectic groups Sp(2n). Our formulation is explicit and provides a very precise link to (n+1)-noncrossing perfect matchings, going beyond a dimension count. Extending our argument to the k-th symmetric powers of these representations, the combinatorial objects involved turn out to be (n+1)-noncrossing k-regular graphs. As corollaries we obtain instances of the cyclic sieving phenomenon for these objects and the natural rotation action. In general, we derive branching rules for the diagram algebras corresponding to the representations in a uniform way. We also compute the Frobenius characteristics of modules of the diagram algebras restricted to the action of the symmetric group and obtain the isotypic decomposition of the r-th tensor power of V when n is large enough in comparison to r.

Combinatorics of symplectic invariant tensors

An important problem from invariant theory is to describe the subspace of a tensor power of a representation invariant under the action of the group. According to Weyl's classic, the first main (later: 'fundamental') theorem of invariant theory states that all invariants are expressible in terms of a finite number among them, whereas a second main theorem determines the relations between those basic invariants. Here we present a transparent, combinatorial proof of a second fundamental theorem for the defining representation of the symplectic group Sp(2n). Our formulation is completely explicit and provides a very precise link to (n+1)-noncrossing perfect matchings, going beyond a dimension count. As a corollary, we obtain an instance of the cyclic sieving phenomenon.

Symmetries of statistics on lattice paths between two boundaries

We prove that on the set of lattice paths with steps N=(0,1) and E=(1,0) that lie between two fixed boundaries T and B (which are themselves lattice paths), the statistics `number of E steps shared with B' and `number of E steps shared with T' have a symmetric joint distribution. To do so, we give an involution that switches these statistics, preserves additional parameters, and generalizes to paths that contain steps S=(0,-1) at prescribed x-coordinates. We also show that a similar equidistribution result for path statistics follows from the fact that the Tutte polynomial of a matroid is independent of the order of its ground set. We extend the two theorems to k-tuples of paths between two boundaries, and we give some applications to Dyck paths, generalizing a result of Deutsch, to watermelon configurations, to pattern-avoiding permutations, and to the generalized Tamari lattice. Finally, we prove a conjecture of Nicolás about the distribution of degrees of k consecutive vertices in k-triangulations of a convex n-gon. To achieve this goal, we provide a new statistic-preserving bijection between certain k-tuples of non-crossing paths and k-flagged semistandard Young tableaux, which is based on local moves reminiscent of jeu de taquin.

Descent sets for symplectic groups

The descent set of an oscillating (or up-down) tableau is introduced. This descent set plays the same role in the representation theory of the symplectic groups as the descent set of a standard tableau plays in the representation theory of the general linear groups. In particular, we show that the descent set is preserved by Sundaram's correspondence. This gives a direct combinatorial interpretation of the branching rules for the defining representations of the symplectic groups; equivalently, for the Frobenius character of the action of a symmetric group on an isotypic subspace in a tensor power of the defining representation of a symplectic group.

Ptolemy diagrams and torsion pairs in the cluster categories of Dynkin type D

We give a complete classification of torsion pairs in the cluster category of Dynkin type D_n, via a bijection to new combinatorial objects called Ptolemy diagrams of type D. For the latter we give along the way different combinatorial descriptions. One of these allows us to count the number of torsion pairs in the cluster category of type D_n by providing their generating function explicitly.

Torsion pairs in cluster tubes

We give a complete classification of torsion pairs in the cluster categories associated to tubes of finite rank. The classification is in terms of combinatorial objects called Ptolemy diagrams which already appeared in our earlier work on torsion pairs in cluster categories of Dynkin type A. As a consequence of our classification we establish closed formulae enumerating the torsion pairs in cluster tubes, and obtain that the torsion pairs in cluster tubes exhibit a cyclic sieving phenomenon.

Counting the number of elements in the mutation classes of \tilde{A}_n-quivers

In this article we prove explicit formulae for the number of non-isomorphic cluster-tilted algebras of type \tilde{A}_n in the derived equivalence classes. In particular, we obtain the number of elements in the mutation classes of quivers of type \tilde{A}_n. As a by-product, this provides an alternative proof for the number of quivers of Dynkin type D_n which was first determined by Buan and Torkildsen.

Cyclic Sieving for torsion pairs in the cluster category of Dynkin type A_n

Recently, a combinatorial model for torsion pairs in the cluster category of Dynkin type A_n was introduced, and used to derive an explicit formula for their number. In this article we determine the number of torsion pairs that are invariant under b-fold application of Auslander-Reiten translation. It turns out that the set of torsion pairs together with Auslander-Reiten translation, and a natural q-analogue of the formula for the number of all torsion pairs exhibits the cyclic sieving phenomenon.

Maximal 0-1 fillings of moon polyominoes with restricted chain-lengths and rc-graphs

We show that maximal 0-1-fillings of moon polynomials with restricted chain lengths can be identified with certain rc-graphs, also known as pipe dreams. In particular, this exhibits a connection between maximal 0-1-fillings of Ferrers shapes and Schubert polynomials. Moreover, it entails a bijective proof showing that the number of maximal fillings of a stack polyomino S with no north-east chains longer than k depends only on k and the multiset of column heights of S. Our main contribution is a slightly stronger theorem, which in turn leads us to conjecture that the poset of rc-graphs with covering relation given by generalised chute moves is in fact a lattice.

Ptolemy diagrams and torsion pairs in the cluster category of Dynkin type A_n

We give a complete classification of torsion pairs in the cluster category of Dynkin type A_n. Along the way we give a new combinatorial description of Ptolemy diagrams, an infinite version of which was introduced by Ng. This allows us to count the number of torsion pairs in the cluster category of type A_n. We also count torsion pairs up to Auslander-Reiten translation.

Extended Rate, more GFUN

We present a software package that guesses formulae for sequences of, for example, rational numbers or rational functions, given the first few terms. We implement an algorithm due to Bernhard Beckermann and George Labahn, together with some enhancements to render our package efficient. Thus we extend and complement Christian Krattenthaler's program Rate, the parts concerned with guessing of Bruno Salvy and Paul Zimmermann's GFUN, the univariate case of Manuel Kauers' Guess.m and Manuel Kauers' and Christoph Koutschan's qGeneratingFunctions.m.

Matrix Ansatz, lattice paths and rook placements

We give two combinatorial interpretations of the Matrix Ansatz of the PASEP in terms of lattice paths and rook placements. This gives two (mostly) combinatorial proofs of a new enumeration formula for the partition function of the PASEP. Besides other interpretations, this formula gives the generating function for permutations of a given size with respect to the number of ascents and occurrences of the pattern 13-2, the generating function according to weak exceedances and crossings, and the n-th moment of certain q-Laguerre polynomials.

Combinatorial Interpretations of the q-Faulhaber and q-Salie Coefficients

Recently, Guo and Zeng discovered two families of polynomials featuring in a q-analogue of Faulhaber's formula for the sums of powers and a q-analogue of Gessel-Viennot's formula involving Salie's coefficients for the alternating sums of powers. In this paper, we show that these are polynomials with symmetric, nonnegative integral coefficients by refining Gessel-Viennot's combinatorial interpretations.
