Characterizing oxygen atoms in perovskite and pyrochlore oxides using ADF-STEM at a resolution of a few tens of picometers

We present an aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (ac-STEM) analysis of the perovskite (LaFeO3) and pyrochlore (Yb2Ti2O7 and Pr2Zr2O7) oxides and demonstrate that both the shape and contrast of visible atomic columns in annular dark-field (ADF) images are sensitive to the presence of nearby atoms of low atomic number (e.g. oxygen). We show that point defects (e.g. oxygen vacancies), which are invisible - or difficult to observe due to limited sensitivity - in X-ray and neutron diffraction measurements, are the origin of the complex magnetic ground state of pyrochlore oxides. In addition, we present, for the first time, a method by which light atoms can be resolved in quantitative ADF-STEM images. Using this method, we resolved oxygen atoms in perovskite and pyrochlore oxides.

Establishing magneto-structural relationships in the solid solutions of the skyrmion hosting family of materials: GaV$_4$S$_{8-y}$Se$_{y}$

The GaV$_4$S$_{8-y}$Se$_y$ $(y = 0$ to $8)$ family of materials have been synthesized in both polycrystalline and single crystal form, and their structural and magnetic properties thoroughly investigated. Each of these materials crystallizes in the $F\bar{4}3m$ space group at ambient temperature. However, in contrast to the end members GaV$_4$S$_8$ and GaV$_4$Se$_8$, that undergo a structural transition to the $R3m$ space group at 42 and 41 K respectively, the solid solutions $(y = 1$ to $7)$ retain cubic symmetry down to 1.5 K. In zero applied field the end members of the family order ferromagnetically at 13 K (GaV$_4$S$_8$) and 18 K (GaV$_4$Se$_8$), while the intermediate compounds exhibit a spin-glass-like ground state. We demonstrate that the magnetic structure of GaV$_4$S$_8$ shows localization of spins on the V cations, indicating that a charge ordering mechanism drives the structural phase transition. We conclude that the observation of both structural and ferromagnetic transitions in the end members of the series in zero field is a prerequisite for the stabilization of a skyrmion phase, and discuss how the absence of these transitions in the $y = 1$ to $7$ materials can be explained by their structural properties.

Optical floating zone crystal growth of rare-earth disilicates, $R\mathbf{_{2}}$Si$\mathbf{_{2}}$O$\mathbf{_{7}}$ ($R=$ Er, Ho, and Tm)

The wealth of structural phases seen in the rare-earth disilicate compounds promises an equally rich range of interesting magnetic properties. We report on the crystal growth by the optical floating zone method of members of the rare-earth disilicate family, $R_{2}$Si$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (with $R=$ Er, Ho, and Tm). Through a systematic study, we have optimised the growth conditions for Er$_{2}$Si$_{2}$O$_{7}$. We have grown, for the first time using the floating zone method, crystal boules of Ho$_{2}$Si$_{2}$O$_{7}$ and Tm$_{2}$Si$_{2}$O$_{7}$ compounds. We show that the difficulties encountered in the synthesis of polycrystalline and single crystal samples are due to the similar thermal stability ranges of different rare-earth silicate compounds in the temperature-composition phase diagrams of the $R$-Si-O systems. The addition of a small amount of SiO$_{2}$ excess allowed the amount of impurity phases present in the powder samples to be minimised. The phase composition analysis of the powder X-ray diffraction data collected on the as-grown boules revealed that they were of single phase, except in the case of thulium disilicate, which comprised of two phases. All growths resulted in multi-grain boules, from which sizable single crystals could be isolated. The optimum conditions used for the synthesis and crystal growth of polycrystalline and single crystal $R_{2}$Si$_{2}$O$_{7}$ materials are reported. Specific heat measurements of erbium and thulium disilicate compounds confirm an antiferromagnetic phase transition below $T_{\mathrm{N}}=$ 1.8 K for D-type Er$_{2}$Si$_{2}$O$_{7}$ and a Schottky anomaly centered around 3.5 K in C-type Tm$_{2}$Si$_{2}$O$_{7}$, suggesting the onset of short-range magnetic correlations. Magnetic susceptibility data of E-type Ho$_{2}$Si$_{2}$O$_{7}$ reveals an antiferromagnetic ordering of the Ho spins below $T_\mathrm{N}=$ 2.3 K.

A Near-Ideal Molecule-Based Haldane Spin-Chain

The molecular coordination complex NiI$_2$(3,5-lut)$_4$ [where (3,5-lut) $=$ (3,5-lutidine) $=$ (C$_7$H$_9$N)] has been synthesized and characterized by several techniques including synchrotron X-ray diffraction, ESR, SQUID magnetometry, pulsed-field magnetization, inelastic neutron scattering and muon spin relaxation. Templated by the configuration of 3,5-lut ligands the molecules pack in-registry with the Ni--I$\cdots$I--Ni chains aligned along the $c$--axis. This arrangement leads to through-space I$\cdots$I magnetic coupling which is directly measured for the first time in this work. The net result is a near-ideal realization of the $S = 1$ Haldane chain with $J = 17.5~\rm{K}$ and energy gaps of $Δ^{\parallel} = 5.3~{\rm K}$ $Δ^{\perp} =7.7~{\rm K}$, split by the easy-axis single-ion anisotropy $D=-1.2~{\rm K}$. The ratio $D/J = -0.07$ affords one of the most isotropic Haldane systems yet discovered, while the ratio $Δ_0/J = 0.40(1)$ (where $Δ_0$ is the average gap size) is close to its ideal theoretical value, suggesting a very high degree of magnetic isolation of the spin chains in this material. The Haldane gap is closed by orientation-dependent critical fields $μ_0H_{\rm c}^{\parallel} = 5.3~\rm{T}$ and $μ_0H_{\rm c}^{\perp} = 4.3~\rm{T}$, which are readily accessible experimentally and permit investigations across the entirety of the Haldane phase, with the fully polarized state occurring at $μ_0 H_{\rm s}^{\parallel}=46.0~\rm{T}$ and $μ_0 H_{\rm s}^{\perp}=50.7~\rm{T}$. The results are explicable within the so-called fermion model, in contrast to other reported easy-axis Haldane systems. Zero-field magnetic order is absent down to $20~{\rm mK}$ and emergent end-chain effects are observed in the gapped state, as evidenced by detailed low-temperature measurements.

Control of the third dimension in copper-based square-lattice antiferromagnets

Using a mixed-ligand synthetic scheme, we create a family of quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnets, namely, [Cu(HF$_2$)(pyz)$_2$]ClO$_4$ [pyz = pyrazine], [Cu$L_2$(pyz)$_2$](ClO$_4$)$_2$ [$L$ = pyO = pyridine-N-oxide and 4-phpyO = 4-phenylpyridine-N-oxide. These materials are shown to possess equivalent two-dimensional [Cu(pyz)$_2$]$^{2+}$ nearly square layers, but exhibit interlayer spacings that vary from 6.5713~Å~to 16.777~Å, as dictated by the axial ligands. We present the structural and magnetic properties of this family as determined via x-ray diffraction, electron-spin resonance, pulsed- and quasistatic-field magnetometry and muon-spin rotation, and compare them to those of the prototypical two-dimensional magnetic polymer Cu(pyz)$_2$(ClO$_4$)$_2$. We find that, within the limits of the experimental error, the two-dimensional, {\it intralayer} exchange coupling in our family of materials remains largely unaffected by the axial ligand substitution, while the observed magnetic ordering temperature decreases slowly with increasing layer separation. Despite the structural motifs common to this family and Cu(pyz)$_2$(ClO$_4$)$_2$, the latter has significantly stronger two-dimensional exchange interactions and hence a higher ordering temperature. We discuss these results, as well as the mechanisms that might drive the long-range order in these materials, in terms of departures from the ideal $S=1/2$ two-dimensional square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet. In particular, we find that both spin exchange anisotropy in the intralayer interaction and interlayer couplings (exchange, dipolar, or both) are needed to account for the observed ordering temperatures, with the intralayer anisotropy becoming more important as the layers are pulled further apart.

Crystal growth and properties of the non-centrosymmetric superconductor, Ru7B3

We describe the crystal growth of high quality single crystals of the non-centrosymmetric superconductor, Ru7B3 by the floating zone technique, using an optical furnace equipped with xenon arc lamps. The crystals obtained are large and suitable for detailed measurements, and have been examined using x-ray Laue patterns. The superconducting properties of the crystals obtained have been investigated by magnetisation and resistivity measurements. Crystals have also been grown starting with enriched 11B isotope, making them suitable for neutron scattering experiments.

Static magnetic moments revealed by muon spin relaxation and thermodynamic measurements in quantum spin ice Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$

We present muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and specific-heat versus temperature $C(T)$ measurements on polycrystalline and single-crystal samples of the pyrochlore magnet Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. $C(T)$ exhibits a sharp peak at a $T_\mathrm{C}$ of 0.21 and 0.26~K for the single-crystal and polycrystalline samples respectively. For both samples, the magnetic entropy released between 50~mK and 30~K amounts to $R\ln2$ per Yb. At temperatures below $T_\mathrm{C}$ we observe a steep drop in the asymmetry of the zero-field $μ$SR time spectra at short time scales, as well as a decoupling of the muon spins from the internal field in longitudinal magnetic fields of $\leq0.25$~T for both the polycrystalline and single-crystal samples. These muon data are indicative of static magnetic moments. Our results are consistent with the onset of long-range magnetic order in both forms of Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$.

Spin correlations in Ca3Co2O6: A polarised-neutron diffraction and Monte Carlo study

We present polarised-neutron diffraction measurements of the Ising-like spin-chain compound Ca3Co2O6 above and below the magnetic ordering temperature TN. Below TN, a clear evolution from a single-phase spin-density wave (SDW) structure to a mixture of SDW and commensurate antiferromagnet (CAFM) structures is observed on cooling. For a rapidly-cooled sample, the majority phase at low temperature is the SDW, while if the cooling is performed sufficiently slowly, then the SDW and the CAFM structure coexist between 1.5 and 10 K. Above TN, we use Monte Carlo methods to analyse the magnetic diffuse scattering data. We show that both intra- and inter-chain correlations persist above TN, but are essentially decoupled. Intra-chain correlations resemble the ferromagnetic Ising model, while inter-chain correlations resemble the frustrated triangular-lattice antiferromagnet. Using previously-published bulk property measurements and our neutron diffraction data, we obtain values of the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions and the single-ion anisotropy.
