Thermodynamic and Dynamical Signatures of a Quantum Spin-Hall Insulator to Superconductor Transition

Thermodynamic and dynamical properties of a model of Dirac fermions with a deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP) separating an interaction-generated quantum spin-Hall insulator from an s-wave superconductor [Nature Comm.~{\bf 10}, 2658 (2019)] are studied by quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Inside the deconfined quantum critical region bound by the single-particle gap, spinons and spinless charge-2e skyrmions emerge. Since the model conserves total spin and charge, and has a single length scale, these excitations lead to a characteristic linear temperature dependence of the uniform spin and charge susceptibilities. At the DQCP, the order parameter dynamic structure factors show remarkable similarities that support emergent Lorentz symmetry. Above a critical temperature, superconductivity is destroyed by the proliferation of spin-1/2 vortices.

Valence-bond solid to antiferromagnet transition in the two-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model by Langevin dynamics

The two-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model of electrons coupled to quantum phonons is investigated using Langevin dynamics within the framework of auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo. Based on an explicit determination of the density of zeros of the fermion determinant, it is argued that the method is efficient in the challenging adiabatic limit. Large-scale simulations at the O(4)-symmetric point establish that the ground state of the 2D SSH model undergoes a transition from a $(π,π)$ valence bond solid to an antiferromagnet with increasing phonon frequency, yet still in the adiabatic regime. The single-particle spectrum illustrates the renormalization of the electronic band and suggests the existence of a gapped polaronic band, whereas the particle-hole channels show gapless modes associated with long-range bond and magnetic order, respectively. The simulations are supplemented with a mean-field analysis and a self-consistent Born proximation.

Competing Orders and Unconventional Criticality in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Model

The phase diagram of the one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model of spinless fermions coupled to quantum phonons is determined by quantum Monte Carlo simulations. It differs significantly from previous work. In addition to Luttinger liquid and bond-order-wave (BOW) phases, we find an extended charge-density-wave (CDW) phase. Because of different broken symmetries, BOW and CDW phases are connected by a retardation-driven phase transition. Our results are consistent with the theory of the frustrated $XXZ$ chain, including unconventional power-law exponents at criticality, and an interpretation in terms of deconfined quantum criticality via proliferation of solitons.

Continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo for fermion-boson lattice models: Improved bosonic estimators and application to the Holstein model

We extend the continuous-time interaction-expansion quantum Monte Carlo method with respect to measuring observables for fermion-boson lattice models. Using generating functionals, we express expectation values involving boson operators, which are not directly accessible because simulations are done in terms of a purely fermionic action, as integrals over fermionic correlation functions. We also demonstrate that certain observables can be inferred directly from the vertex distribution, and present efficient estimators for the total energy and the phonon propagator of the Holstein model. Furthermore, we generalize the covariance estimator of the fidelity susceptibility, an unbiased diagnostic for phase transitions, to the case of retarded interactions. The new estimators are applied to half-filled spinless and spinful Holstein models in one dimension. The observed renormalization of the phonon mode across the Peierls transition in the spinless model suggests a soft-mode transition in the adiabatic regime. The critical point is associated with a minimum in the phonon kinetic energy and a maximum in the fidelity susceptibility.

Thermodynamic and spectral properties of adiabatic Peierls chains

We present exact numerical results for the effects of thermal fluctuations on the experimentally relevant thermodynamic and spectral properties of Peierls chains. To this end, a combination of classical Monte Carlo sampling and exact diagonalization is used to study adiabatic half-filled Holstein and Su-Schrieffer-Heeger models. The classical nature of the lattice displacements in combination with parallel tempering permit simulations on large system sizes and a direct calculation of spectral functions in the frequency domain. Most notably, the long-range order and the associated Peierls gap give rise to a distinct low-temperature peak in the specific heat. The closing of the gap and suppression of order by thermal fluctuations involves in-gap excitations in the form of soliton-antisoliton pairs, and is also reflected in the dynamic density and bond structure factors as well as in the optical conductivity. We compare our data to the widely used mean-field approximation, and highlight relations to symmetry-protected topological phases and disorder problems.

Excitation spectra and correlation functions of quantum Su-Schrieffer-Heeger models

We study one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) models with quantum phonons using a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method. Within statistical errors, we obtain identical results for the SSH model with acoustic phonons, and a related model with a coupling to an optical bond phonon mode. Based on this agreement, we first study the Peierls metal-insulator transition of the spinless SSH model, and relate it to the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition of a spinless Luttinger liquid. In the Peierls phase, the spectral functions reveal the single-particle and charge gap, and a central peak related to long-range order. For the spinful SSH model, which has a dimerized ground state for any nonzero coupling, we reveal a symmetry-related degeneracy of spin and charge excitations, and the expected spin and charge gaps as well as a central peak. Finally, we study the SSH-$UV$ model with electron-phonon and electron-electron interaction. We observe a Mott phase with critical spin and bond correlations at weak electron-phonon coupling, and a Peierls phase with gapped spin excitations at strong coupling. We relate our findings to the extended Hubbard model, and discuss the physical origin of the agreement between optical and acoustic phonons.

Fermionic quantum criticality in honeycomb and $π$-flux Hubbard models: Finite-size scaling of renormalization-group-invariant observables from quantum Monte Carlo

We numerically investigate the critical behavior of the Hubbard model on the honeycomb and the $π$-flux lattice, which exhibits a direct transition from a Dirac semimetal to an antiferromagnetically ordered Mott insulator. We use projective auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo simulations and a careful finite-size scaling analysis that exploits approximately improved renormalization-group-invariant observables. This approach, which is successfully verified for the three-dimensional XY transition of the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model, allows us to extract estimates for the critical couplings and the critical exponents. The results confirm that the critical behavior for the semimetal to Mott insulator transition in the Hubbard model belongs to the Gross-Neveu-Heisenberg universality class on both lattices.

Ground-state and spectral properties of an asymmetric Hubbard ladder

We investigate a ladder system with two inequivalent legs, namely a Hubbard chain and a one-dimensional electron gas. Analytical approximations, the density matrix renormalization group method, and continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo simulations are used to determine ground-state properties, gaps, and spectral functions of this system at half-filling. Evidence for the existence of four different phases as a function of the Hubbard interaction and the rung hopping is presented. First, a Luttinger liquid exists at very weak interchain hopping. Second, a Kondo-Mott insulator with spin and charge gaps induced by an effective rung exchange coupling is found at moderate interchain hopping or strong Hubbard interaction. Third, a spin-gapped paramagnetic Mott insulator with incommensurate excitations and pairing of doped charges is observed at intermediate values of the rung hopping and the interaction. Fourth, the usual correlated band insulator is recovered for large rung hopping. We show that the wavenumbers of the lowest single-particle excitations are different in each insulating phase. In particular, the three gapped phases exhibit markedly different spectral functions. We discuss the relevance of asymmetric two-leg ladder systems as models for atomic wires deposited on a substrate.

Phonon spectral function of the one-dimensional Holstein-Hubbard model

We use the continuous-time interaction expansion (CT-INT) quantum Monte Carlo method to calculate the phonon spectral function of the one-dimensional Holstein-Hubbard model at half-filling. Our results are consistent with a soft-mode Peierls transition in the adiabatic regime, and the existence of a central peak related to long-range order in the Peierls phase. We explain a previously observed feature at small momenta in terms of a hybridization of charge and phonon excitations. Tuning the system from a Peierls to a metallic phase with a nonzero Hubbard interaction suppresses the central peak, but a significant renormalization of the phonon dispersion remains. In contrast, the dispersion is only weakly modified in the Mott phase. We discuss finite-size effects, the relation to the dynamic charge structure factor, as well as additional sum rules and their implications. Finally, we reveal the existence of a discrete symmetry in a continuum field theory of the Holstein model, which is spontaneously broken in the Peierls phase.

Kondo screening of spin-charge separated fluxons by a helical liquid

The insertion of a magnetic $π$ flux into a quantum spin Hall insulator creates four localized, spin-charge separated states: the charge and spin fluxons with either charge $Q=\pm1$ or spin $S_z=\pm1/2$, respectively. In the presence of repulsive Coulomb interactions, the charged states are gapped out and a local moment is formed. We consider the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model on a ribbon with zigzag edges to construct an impurity model where the spin fluxon is screened by the helical edge liquid. In the noninteracting model, the hybridization between fluxon and edge states is dominated by the extent of the latter. It becomes larger with increasing spin-orbit coupling $λ$ but only has nonzero values for even distances between the $π$ flux and the edge. For the interacting system, we use the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method, which we have extended by global susceptibility measurements to reproduce the characteristic Curie law of the spin fluxon. However, due to the finite extent of the fluxons, the local moment is formed at rather low energies. The screening of the spin fluxon leads to deviations from the Curie law that follow the universal behavior obtained from a data collapse. Additionally, the Kondo resonance arises in the local spectral function between the two low-lying Hubbard peaks.

Phases of correlated spinless fermions on the honeycomb lattice

We use exact diagonalization and cluster perturbation theory to address the role of strong interactions and quantum fluctuations for spinless fermions on the honeycomb lattice. We find quantum fluctuations to be very pronounced both at weak and strong interactions. A weak second-neighbor Coulomb repulsion $V_2$ induces a tendency toward an interaction-generated quantum anomalous Hall phase, as borne out in mean-field theory. However, quantum fluctuations prevent the formation of a stable quantum Hall phase before the onset of the charge-modulated phase predicted at large $V_2$ by mean-field theory. Consequently, the system undergoes a direct transition from the semimetal to the charge-modulated phase. For the latter, charge fluctuations also play a key role. While the phase, which is related to pinball liquids, is stabilized by the repulsion $V_2$, the energy of its low-lying charge excitations scales with the electronic hopping $t$, as in a band insulator.

Rashba coupling and magnetic order in correlated helical liquids

We study strongly correlated helical liquids with and without Rashba coupling using quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the Kane-Mele model with a Hubbard interaction at the edge. Independent of the Rashba coupling, we find that interactions enhance spin correlations and suppress the spectral weight at the Fermi level. For sufficiently strong interactions, a gap can be observed in the single-particle spectral function. However, based on a finite-size scaling analysis and theoretical arguments, we argue that this gap is closed by order parameter fluctuations in the Luttinger liquid phase even at zero temperature, and filled in by thermally induced kinks in the order parameter in the Mott phase at finite temperatures. While the bosonization suggests an umklapp-driven Mott transition only in the presence of Rashba coupling and hence a significant impact of the latter, our numerical results are almost unaffected by Rashba coupling even at low temperatures.

Charge and spin correlations of a Peierls insulator after a quench

Electron-phonon coupling plays a central role for time-dependent phenomena in condensed matter, for example in photo-excitation experiments. We use the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method to study the real-time evolution of charge and spin correlation functions of a Peierls insulator after a quench to a noninteracting Hamiltonian. This approach gives exact results, and fully takes into account quantum phonon effects without relying on a Hilbert space truncation. It is also free from a dynamical sign problem. The observed time dependence is compared to free-fermion time evolution starting from a dimerized state. Our exact results provide a benchmark for more realistic calculations, and may be directly applicable to experiments with cold atoms or trapped ions.

Excitation spectra and spin gap of the half-filled Holstein-Hubbard model

Single-- and two-particle excitation spectra of the one-dimensional, half-filled Holstein-Hubbard model are calculated using the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method. In the metallic phase, the results are consistent with a Luther-Emery liquid that has gapped spin and single-particle excitations but a gapless charge mode. However, given the initially exponential dependence of the spin gap on the backscattering matrix element, the numerical excitation spectra appear gapless in the weak-coupling regime, and therefore resemble those of a Luttinger liquid. The Mott phase has the expected charge gap and gapless spin excitations. The Peierls state shows a charge, spin and single-particle gap, a soft phonon mode, backfolded shadow bands and soliton excitations. Arguments and numerical evidence for the existence of a nonzero spin gap throughout the metallic phase are provided in terms of equal-time spin and charge correlation functions.

Effect of Electron-Phonon Interaction Range for a Half-Filled Band in One Dimension

We demonstrate that fermion-boson models with nonlocal interactions can be simulated at finite band filling with the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method. We apply this method to explore the influence of the electron-phonon interaction range for a half-filled band in one dimension, covering the full range from the Holstein to the Fröhlich regime. The phase diagram contains metallic, Peierls, and phase-separated regions, which we characterize in terms of static and dynamical correlation functions. In particular, our results reveal a suppression of $2k_F$ charge correlations with increasing interaction range, allowing for a power-law decay comparable to the pairing correlations.

Interaction-range effects for fermions in one dimension

Experiments on quasi-one-dimensional systems such as quantum wires and metallic chains on surfaces suggest the existence of electron-electron interactions of substantial range and hence physics beyond the Hubbard model. We therefore investigate one-dimensional, quarter-filled chains with a Coulomb potential with variable screening length by quantum Monte Carlo methods and exact diagonalization. The Luttinger liquid interaction parameter K_rho decreases with increasing interaction strength and range. Experimentally observed values close to 1/4 require strong interactions and/or large screening lengths. As predicted by bosonization, we find a metal-insulator transition at K_rho=1/4. Upon increasing the screening length, the charge and spin correlation functions reveal the crossover from dominant 2k_F spin correlations to dominant 4k_F charge correlations, and a strong enhancement of the charge velocity. In the metallic phase, the signatures of spin-charge separation in the single-particle spectrum, spinon and holon bands, remain robust even for rather long-ranged interactions. The charge-density-wave state exhibits backfolded shadow bands.

Peierls to superfluid crossover in the one-dimensional, quarter-filled Holstein model

We use continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo simulations to study retardation effects in the metallic, quarter-filled Holstein model in one dimension. Based on results which include the one- and two-particle spectral functions as well as the optical conductivity, we conclude that with increasing phonon frequency the ground state evolves from one with dominant diagonal order---2k_F charge correlations---to one with dominant off-diagonal fluctuations, namely s-wave pairing correlations. In the parameter range of this crossover, our numerical results support the existence of a spin gap for all phonon frequencies. The crossover can hence be interpreted in terms of preformed pairs corresponding to bipolarons, which are essentially localised in the Peierls phase, and "condense" with increasing phonon frequency to generate dominant pairing correlations.

Dynamic charge correlations near the Peierls transition

The quantum phase transition between a repulsive Luttinger liquid and an insulating Peierls state is studied in the framework of the one-dimensional spinless Holstein model. We focus on the adiabatic regime but include the full quantum dynamics of the phonons. Using continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we track in particular the dynamic charge structure factor and the single-particle spectrum across the transition. With increasing electron-phonon coupling, the dynamic charge structure factor reveals the emergence of a charge gap, and a clear signature of phonon softening at the zone boundary. The single-particle spectral function evolves continuously across the transition. Hybridization of the charge and phonon modes of the Luttinger liquid description leads to two modes, one of which corresponds to the coherent polaron band. This band acquires a gap upon entering the Peierls phase, whereas the other mode constitutes the incoherent, high-energy spectrum with backfolded shadow bands. Coherent polaronic motion is a direct consequence of quantum lattice fluctuations. In the strong-coupling regime, the spectrum is described by the static, mean-field limit. Importantly, whereas finite electron density in general leads to screening of polaron effects, the latter reappear at half filling due to charge ordering and lattice dimerization.
