Open-closed modular operads, Cardy condition and string field theory

We prove that the modular operad of diffeomorphism classes of Riemann surfaces with both `open' and `closed' boundary components, in the sense of string field theory, is the modular completion of its genus 0 part quotiented by the Cardy condition. We also provide a finitary presentation of a version of this modular two-colored operad and characterize its algebras via morphisms of Frobenius algebras, recovering some previously known results of Kaufmann, Penner and others. As an important auxiliary tool we characterize inclusions of cyclic operads that induce inclusions of their modular completions.

Homotopy derivations

We define a strong homotopy derivation of (cohomological) degree k of a strong homotopy algebra over an operad P. This involves resolving the operad obtained from P by adding a generator with "derivation relations". For a wide class of Koszul operads P, in particular Ass and Lie, we describe the strong homotopy derivations by coderivations and show that they are closed under the Lie bracket. We show that symmetrization of a strong homotopy derivation of an A-infinity algebra yields a strong homotopy derivation of the symmetrized L-infinity algebra. We give examples of strong homotopy derivations generalizing inner derivations.

Modular operads and the quantum open-closed homotopy algebra

We verify that certain algebras appearing in string field theory are algebras over Feynman transform of modular operads which we describe explicitly. Equivalent description in terms of solutions of generalized BV master equations are explained from the operadic point of view.

The modular envelope of the cyclic operad Ass

We give a direct combinatorial proof that the modular envelope of the cyclic operad Ass is the modular operad of (the homeomorphism classes of) 2D compact surfaces with boundary with marked points.

Gerstenhaber-Schack diagram cohomology from operadic point of view

We show that the operadic cohomology for any type of algebras over a non-symmetric operad A can be computed as Ext in the category of operadic A-modules. We use this principle to prove that the Gerstenhaber-Schack diagram cohomology is operadic cohomology.

On resolutions of diagrams of algebras

We prove a restricted version of a conjecture by M. Markl on resolutions of an operad describing diagrams of algebras. We discuss a particular case related to the Gerstenhaber-Schack diagram cohomology.
