Naturalness and Dimensional Transmutation in Classically Scale-Invariant Gravity

We discuss the nature of quantum field theories involving gravity that are classically scale-invariant. We show that gravitational radiative corrections are crucial in the determination of the nature of the vacuum state in such theories, which are renormalisable, technically natural, and can be asymptotically free in all dimensionless couplings. In the pure gravity case, we discuss the role of the Gauss-Bonnet term, and we find that Dimensional Transmutation (DT) à la Coleman-Weinberg leads to extrema of the effective action corresponding to nonzero values of the curvature, but such that these extrema are local maxima. In even the simplest extension of the theory to include scalar fields, we show that the same phenomenon can lead to extrema that are local minima of the effective action, with both non-zero curvature and non-zero scalar vacuum expectation values, leading to spontaneous generation of the Planck mass. Although we find an asymptotically free (AF) fixed point exists, unfortunately, no running of the couplings connect the region of DT to the basin of attraction of the AF fixed point. We also find there remains a flat direction for one of the conformal modes. We suggest that in more realistic models AF and DT could be compatible, and that the same scalar vacuum expectation values could be responsible both for DT and for spontaneous breaking of a Grand Unified gauge group.

The Gauss-Bonnet Coupling Constant in Classically Scale-Invariant Gravity

We discuss the renormalization of higher-derivative gravity, both without and with matter fields, in terms of two primary coupling constants rather than three. A technique for determining the dependence of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant on the remaining couplings is explained, and consistency with the local form of the Gauss-Bonnet relation in four dimensions is demonstrated to all orders in perturbation theory. A similar argument is outlined for the Hirzebruch signature and its coupling. We speculate upon the potential implications of instantons on the associated nonperturbative coupling constants.

GUT Scalar Potentials for Higgs Inflation

We have investigated a number of GUT models for the possibility that their Higgs fields might be responsible for inflation in the early universe. In addition to models having an intrinsic Planck mass parameter, we have entertained classically scale invariant models in which the Planck scale itself as well as the GUT scale is induced by spontaneous gauge symmetry breaking. We found that in a non-supersymmetric SU(5) with the usual adjoint Higgs, but with large non-minimal coupling to the curvature, there are flat directions that might lead to inflation. Interestingly, the one of lowest energy breaks into SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1), as suggested by gauge coupling unification. Further, we show that this flat direction is stable against small fluctuations in other directions. We attempted to extend this to supersymmetric GUTS, both global and supergravity, but did not succeed in finding an acceptable model of this type. As is often the case, such models suffered either from a negative vacuum energy or from tachyonic modes. We also considered a variant of an "inverted hierarchy" model in which the GUT scale is set by dimensional transmutation, but were unable to find a phenomenologically acceptable model.

Supergravity Higgs Inflation and Shift Symmetry in Electroweak Theory

We present a model of inflation in a supergravity framework in the Einstein frame where the Higgs field of the next to minimal supersymmetric standard model (NMSSM) plays the role of the inflaton. Previous attempts which assumed non-minimal coupling to gravity failed due to a tachyonic instability of the singlet field during inflation. A canonical Kähler potential with \textit{minimal coupling} to gravity can resolve the tachyonic instability but runs into the $η$-problem. We suggest a model which is free of the $η$-problem due to an additional coupling in the Kähler potential which is allowed by the Standard Model gauge group. This induces directions in the potential which we call K-flat. For a certain value of the new coupling in the (N)MSSM, the Kähler potential is special, because it can be associated with a certain shift symmetry for the Higgs doublets, a generalization of the shift symmetry for singlets in earlier models. We find that K-flat direction has $H_u^0=-H_d^{0*}.$ This shift symmetry is broken by interactions coming from the superpotential and gauge fields. This direction fails to produce successful inflation in the MSSM but produces a viable model in the NMSSM. The model is specifically interesting in the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) limit of the NMSSM. In this limit the model can be confirmed or ruled-out not just by cosmic microwave background observations but also by axion searches.

Entanglement and Nonunitary Evolution

We consider a collapsing relativistic spherical shell for a free quantum field. Once the center of the wavefunction of the shell passes a certain radius R, the degrees of freedom inside R are traced over. We show that an observer outside this region will determine that the evolution of the system is nonunitary. We argue that this phenomenon is generic to entangled systems, and discuss a possible relation to black hole physics.

The Effective Potential, the Renormalisation Group and Vacuum Stability

We review the calculation of the the effective potential with particular emphasis on cases when the tree potential or the renormalisation-group-improved, radiatively corrected potential exhibits non-convex behaviour. We illustrate this in a simple Yukawa model which exhibits a novel kind of dimensional transmutation. We also review briefly earlier work on the Standard Model. We conclude that, despite some recent claims to the contrary, it can be possible to infer reliably that the tree vacuum does not represent the true ground state of the theory.

Squeezed States in the de Sitter Vacuum

We discuss the treatment of squeezed states as excitations in the Euclidean vacuum of de Sitter space. A comparison with the treatment of these states as candidate no-particle states, or alpha-vacua, shows important differences already in the free theory. At the interacting level alpha-vacua are inconsistent, but squeezed state excitations seem perfectly acceptable. Indeed, matrix elements can be renormalized in the excited states using precisely the standard local counterterms of the Euclidean vacuum. Implications for inflationary scenarios in cosmology are discussed.

Effective Beta-Functions for Effective Field Theory

We consider the problem of determining the beta-functions for any reduced effective field theory. Even though not all the Green's functions of a reduced effective field theory are renormalizable, unlike the full effective field theory, certain effective beta- functions for the reduced set of couplings may be calculated without having to introduce vertices in the Feynman rules for redundant operators. These effective beta-functions suffice to apply the renormalization group equation to any transition amplitude (i.e., S- matrix element), thereby rendering reduced effective field theories no more cumbersome than traditionally renormalizable field theories. These effective beta-functions may equally be regarded as the running of couplings for a particular redefinition of the fields.
