Electron-Phonon Interactions Using the PAW Method and Wannier Functions

We present an ab-initio density-functional-theory approach for calculating electron-phonon interactions within the projector augmented-wave method. The required electron-phonon matrix elements are defined as the second derivative of the one-electron energies in the PAW method. As the PAW method leads to a generalized eigenvalue problem, the resulting electron-phonon matrix elements lack some symmetries that are usually present for simple eigenvalue problems and all-electron formulations. We discuss the relation between our definition of the electron-phonon matrix element and other formulations. To allow for efficient evaluation of physical properties, we introduce a Wannier-interpolation scheme, again adapted to generalized eigenvalue problems. To explore the method's numerical characteristics, the temperature-dependent band-gap renormalization of diamond is calculated and compared with previous publications. Furthermore, we apply the method to selected binary compounds and show that the obtained zero-point renormalizations agree well with other values found in literature and experiments.

Assessing model-dielectric-dependent hybrid functionals on the antiferromagnetic transition-metal monoxides MnO, FeO, CoO, and NiO

Recently, two nonempirical hybrid functionals, dielectric-dependent range-separated hybrid functional based on the Coulomb-attenuating method (DD-RSH-CAM) and doubly screened hybrid functional (DSH), have been suggested by [Chen et al, Phys. Rev. Mater. 2, 073803 (2018)] and [Cui et al, J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 9, 2338 (2018)], respectively. These two hybrid functionals are both based on a common model dielectric function approach, but differ in the way how to non-empirically obtain the range-separation parameter. By retaining the full short-range Fock exchange and a fraction of the long-range Fock exchange that equals the inverse of the dielectric constant, both DD-RSH-CAM and DSH turn out to perform very well in predicting the band gaps for a large variety of semiconductors and insulators. Here, we assess how these two hybrid functionals perform on challenging antiferromagnetic transition-metal monoxides MnO, FeO, CoO, and NiO by comparing them to other conventional hybrid functionals and the $GW$ method. We find that single-shot DD0-RSH-CAM and DSH0 improve the band gaps towards experiments as compared to conventional hybrid functionals. The magnetic moments are slightly increased, but the predicted dielectric constants are decreased. The valence band density of states (DOS) predicted by DD0-RSH-CAM and DSH0 are as satisfactory as HSE03 in comparison to experimental spectra, however, the conduction band DOS are shifted to higher energies by about 2 eV compared to HSE03. Self-consistent DD-RSH-CAM and DSH deteriorate the results with a significant overestimation of band gaps.

Anisotropic Magnetic Couplings and Structure-Driven Canted to Collinear Transitions in Spin-orbit Coupled Sr2IrO4

We put forward a scheme to study the anisotropic magnetic couplings in Sr2IrO4 by mapping fully relativistic constrained noncollinear density functional theory including an on-site Hubbard U correction onto a general spin model Hamiltonian. This procedure allows for the simultaneous account and direct control of the lattice, spin and orbital interactions within a fully ab initio scheme. We compute the isotropic, single site anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) coupling parameters, and clarify that the origin of the canted magnetic state in Sr2IrO4 arises from the interplay between structural distortions and the competition between isotropic exchange and DM interactions. A complete magnetic phase diagram with respect to the tetragonal distortion and the rotation of IrO6 octahedra is constructed, revealing the presence of two types of canted to collinear magnetic transitions: a spin-flop transition with increasing tetragonal distortion and a complete quenching of the basal weak ferromagnetic moment below a critical octahedral rotation.

Electronic structure and energy level schemes of RE3+:LaSi3N5 and RE2+:LaSi3N5-xOx phosphors (RE= Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu) from first principles

First principles calculations of rare earth (RE)-doped LaSi3N5 host lattice are performed to obtain the electronic structure, the band gap (BG), and the character of electronic transitions. Doping with both trivalent and bivalent RE cations is inspected. RE 4f states form two bands of occupied and unoccupied states separated by ~5 eV. In RE3+-doped compounds 4f states are shifted by ~6 eV to more negative energies compared with RE2+-compounds. This stabilization causes that RE3+ 4f bands are in a different position relative to the valence band and the conduction band than RE2+ 4f bands and therefore different electronic transitions apply. BG of RE3+-compounds decreases from ~4.6 eV (Ce) to ~0.5 eV (Eu). Except for Ce3+, exhibiting the 4f-5d transition, other RE3+-compounds show the charge transfer of the p - 4f character. BG of RE2+-compounds increases from ~0.80 eV (Ce, Pr) to ~0.95 eV (Nd, Pm), ~1.43 eV (Sm), and ~3.28 eV (Eu) and the electronic transition is of the 4f-5d character. The energy level scheme constructed from ab initio calculated electronic structures agrees well with the experimental energy level diagram. The agreement demonstrates the reliability of the hybrid functional HSE06 to describe correctly bands of nonbonding RE 4f electrons.

Determining the Anisotropic Exchange Coupling of CrO_2 via First-Principles Density Functional Theory Calculations

We report a study of the anisotropic exchange interactions in bulk CrO_2 calculated from first principles within density functional theory. We determine the exchange coupling energies, using both the experimental lattice parameters and those obtained within DFT, within a modified Heisenberg model Hamiltonian in two ways. We employ a supercell method in which certain spins within a cell are rotated and the energy dependence is calculated and a spin-spiral method that modifies the periodic boundary conditions of the problem to allow for an overall rotation of the spins between unit cells. Using the results from each of these methods, we calculate the spin-wave stiffness constant D from the exchange energies using the magnon dispersion relation. We employ a Monte Carlo method to determine the DFT-predicted Curie temperature from these calculated energies and compare with accepted values. Finally, we offer an evaluation of the accuracy of the DFT-based methods and suggest implications of the competing ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions.

The multiferroic phase of DyFeO$_{3}$:an ab--initio study

By performing accurate ab-initio density functional theory calculations, we study the role of $4f$ electrons in stabilizing the magnetic-field-induced ferroelectric state of DyFeO$_{3}$. We confirm that the ferroelectric polarization is driven by an exchange-strictive mechanism, working between adjacent spin-polarized Fe and Dy layers, as suggested by Y. Tokunaga [Phys. Rev. Lett, \textbf{101}, 097205 (2008)]. A careful electronic structure analysis suggests that coupling between Dy and Fe spin sublattices is mediated by Dy-$d$ and O-$2p$ hybridization. Our results are robust with respect to the different computational schemes used for $d$ and $f$ localized states, such as the DFT+$U$ method, the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof (HSE) hybrid functional and the GW approach. Our findings indicate that the interaction between the $f$ and $d$ sublattice might be used to tailor ferroelectric and magnetic properties of multiferroic compounds.
