Approximation and Interpolation of Singular Measures by Trigonometric Polynomials

Complex signed measures of finite total variation are a powerful signal model in many applications. Restricting to the $d$-dimensional torus, finitely supported measures allow for exact recovery if the trigonometric moments up to some order are known. Here, we consider the approximation of general measures, e.g., supported on a curve, by trigonometric polynomials of fixed degree with respect to the Wasserstein-1 distance. We prove sharp lower bounds for their best approximation and (almost) matching upper bounds for effectively computable approximations when the trigonometric moments of the measure are known. A second class of sum of squares polynomials is shown to interpolate the characteristic function on the support of the measure and to converge to zero outside.

Truncated moment problems on positive-dimensional algebraic varieties

This manuscript transfers the main aspects of Prony's method from finitely-supported measures to the classes of signed or non-negative measures supported on algebraic varieties of any dimension. In particular, we show that the Zariski closure of the support of these measures is determined by finitely many moments and can be computed from the kernel of certain moment matrices.

Moment ideals of local Dirac mixtures

In this paper we study ideals arising from moments of local Dirac measures and their mixtures. We provide generators for the case of first order local Diracs and explain how to obtain the moment ideal of the Pareto distribution from them. We then use elimination theory and Prony's method for parameter estimation of finite mixtures. Our results are showcased with applications in signal processing and statistics. We highlight the natural connections to algebraic statistics, combinatorics and applications in analysis throughout the paper.

Semi-algebraic properties of Minkowski sums of a twisted cubic segment

We find a semi-algebraic description of the Minkowski sum $\mathcal{A}_{3,n}$ of $n$ copies of the bounded twisted cubic $\{(t,t^2,t^3)\mid -1\leq t\leq 1\}$ for each integer $n\geq3$. These descriptions provide efficient membership tests for the sets $\mathcal{A}_{3,n}$. These membership tests in turn can be used to resolve some instances of the underdetermined matrix moment problem, which was formulated by Michael Rubinstein and Peter Sarnak in order to study problems related to $L$-functions and their zeros.
