Gravitational Memory and Compact Extra Dimensions

We develop a general formalism for treating radiative degrees of freedom near $\mathscr{I}^{+}$ in theories with an arbitrary Ricci-flat internal space. These radiative modes are encoded in a generalized news tensor which decomposes into gravitational, electromagnetic, and scalar components. We find a preferred gauge which simplifies the asymptotic analysis of the full nonlinear Einstein equations and makes the asymptotic symmetry group transparent. This asymptotic symmetry group extends the BMS group to include angle-dependent isometries of the internal space. We apply this formalism to study memory effects, which are expected to be observed in future experiments, that arise from bursts of higher-dimensional gravitational radiation. We outline how measurements made by gravitational wave observatories might probe properties of the compact extra dimensions.

A Non-Abelian Analogue of DBI from $T \overline{T}$

The Dirac action describes the physics of the Nambu-Goldstone scalars found on branes. The Born-Infeld action defines a non-linear theory of electrodynamics. The combined Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) action describes the leading interactions supported on a single D-brane in string theory. We define a non-abelian analogue of DBI using the $T \overline{T}$ deformation in two dimensions. The resulting quantum theory is compatible with maximal supersymmetry and such theories are quite rare.

Defining the $T \overline{T}$ Deformation on $\mathrm{AdS}_2$

We show that the $T \overline{T}$ deformation of two-dimensional quantum field theory on $\mathrm{AdS}_2$ is well-defined and solvable at the quantum level. Flow equations for the energy spectrum and partition function are derived in analogy with the flat space case. As a non-trivial check, we perturbatively compute the deformed energy spectrum for the case of a free scalar field. We analyze the high energy density of states of the deformed theory and find a Hagedorn growth of states.

$T\bar{T}$ Flows and (2,2) Supersymmetry

We construct a solvable deformation of two-dimensional theories with $(2,2)$ supersymmetry using an irrelevant operator which is a bilinear in the supercurrents. This supercurrent-squared operator is manifestly supersymmetric, and equivalent to $T\bar{T}$ after using conservation laws. As illustrative examples, we deform theories involving a single $(2,2)$ chiral superfield. We show that the deformed free theory is on-shell equivalent to the $(2,2)$ Nambu-Goto action. At the classical level, models with a superpotential exhibit more surprising behavior: the deformed theory exhibits poles in the physical potential which modify the vacuum structure. This suggests that irrelevant deformations of $T\overline{T}$ type might also affect infrared physics.

Non-Linear Supersymmetry and $T\bar T$-like Flows

The $T\bar{T}$ deformation of a supersymmetric two-dimensional theory preserves the original supersymmetry. Moreover, in several interesting cases the deformed theory possesses additional non-linearly realized supersymmetries. We show this for certain $\mathcal N =(2,2)$ models in two dimensions, where we observe an intriguing similarity with known $\mathcal N=1 $ models in four dimensions. This suggests that higher-dimensional models with non-linearly realized supersymmetries might also be obtained from $T\bar{T}$-like flow equations. We show that in four dimensions this is indeed the case for $\mathcal N=1 $ Born-Infeld theory, as well as for the Goldstino action for spontaneously broken $\mathcal N=1 $ supersymmetry.

A Landscape of Field Theories

Studying a quantum field theory involves a choice of space-time manifold and a choice of background for any global symmetries of the theory. We argue that many more choices are possible when specifying the background. In the context of branes in string theory, the additional data corresponds to a choice of supergravity tensor fluxes. We propose the existence of a landscape of field theory backgrounds, characterized by the space-time metric, global symmetry background and a choice of tensor fluxes. As evidence for this landscape, we study the supersymmetric six-dimensional (2,0) theory compactified to two dimensions. Different choices of metric and flux give rise to distinct two-dimensional theories, which can preserve differing amounts of supersymmetry.

Constraining de Sitter Space in String Theory

We argue that the heterotic string does not have classical vacua corresponding to de Sitter space-times of dimension four or higher. The same conclusion applies to type II vacua in the absence of RR fluxes. Our argument extends prior supergravity no-go results to regimes of high curvature. We discuss the interpretation of the heterotic result from the perspective of dual type II orientifold constructions. Our result suggests that the genericity arguments used in string landscape discussions should be viewed with caution.

Global Anomalies and Effective Field Theory

We show that matching anomalies under large gauge transformations and large diffeomorphisms can explain the appearance and non-renormalization of couplings in effective field theory. We focus on thermal effective field theory where we argue that the appearance of certain unusual Chern-Simons couplings is a consequence of global anomalies. As an example, we show that a mixed global anomaly in four dimensions fixes the chiral vortical effect coefficient. This is an experimentally measurable prediction from a global anomaly. For certain situations, we propose a simpler method for calculating global anomalies which uses correlation functions rather than eta invariants.

Domain Walls, Triples and Acceleration

We present a construction of domain walls in string theory. The domain walls can bridge both Minkowski and AdS string vacua. A key ingredient in the construction are novel classical Yang-Mills configurations, including instantons, which interpolate between toroidal Yang-Mills vacua. Our construction provides a concrete framework for the study of inflating metrics in string theory. In some cases, the accelerating space-time comes with a holographic description. The general form of the holographic dual is a field theory with parameters that vary over space-time.

A New String in Ten Dimensions?

I suggest the possibility of a new string in ten dimensions. Evidence for this string is presented both from orientifold physics and from K-theory, along with a mystery concerning the M-theory description. Motivated by this possibility, some novel aspects of decoupling limits in heterotic/type I theories are described; specifically, the decoupled theory on type I $D$-strings is argued to be three-dimensional rather than two-dimensional. These decoupled theories provide the matrix model definitions of the heterotic/type I strings.

Linear Sigma Models with Torsion

Gauged linear sigma models with (0,2) supersymmetry allow a larger choice of couplings than models with (2,2) supersymmetry. We use this freedom to find a fully linear construction of torsional heterotic compactifications, including models with branes. As a non-compact example, we describe a family of metrics which correspond to deformations of the heterotic conifold by turning on H-flux. We then describe compact models which are gauge-invariant only at the quantum level. Our construction gives a generalization of symplectic reduction. The resulting spaces are non-Kahler analogues of familiar toric spaces like complex projective space. Perturbatively conformal models can be constructed by considering intersections.

M-theory and Type IIA Flux Compactifications

We consider compactifications of M-theory and type IIA string theory to four dimensions. For Minkowski space-time, a supergravity no-go theorem forbids flux supported in the internal space. We show how to evade this no-go theorem by exhibiting new sources of brane charge: in string theory, the basic physical phenomenon is the generation of new brane charges from D-branes in transverse fluxes. In M-theory, there is a new source of M5-brane charge from novel higher derivative couplings that involve fluxes as well as curvatures. We present some explicit orientifold examples with both N=1 and N=2 space-time supersymmetry. Finally, we explain the status of massive type IIA flux compactifications.

New Examples of Flux Vacua

Type IIB toroidal orientifolds are among the earliest examples of flux vacua. By applying T-duality, we construct the first examples of massive IIA flux vacua with Minkowski space-times, along with new examples of type IIA flux vacua. The backgrounds are surprisingly simple with no four-form flux at all. They serve as illustrations of the ingredients needed to build type IIA and massive IIA solutions with scale separation. To check that these backgrounds are actually solutions, we formulate the complete set of type II supergravity equations of motion in a very useful form that treats the R-R fields democratically.

Target Spaces from Chiral Gauge Theories

Chiral gauge theories in two dimensions with (0,2) supersymmetry are central in the study of string compactifications. Remarkably little is known about generic (0,2) theories. We consider theories with branches on which multiplets with a net gauge anomaly become massive. The simplest example is a relevant perturbation of the gauge theory that flows to the CP(n) model. To compute the effective action, we derive a useful set of Feynman rules for (0,2) supergraphs. From the effective action, we see that the infra-red geometry reflects the gauge anomaly by the presence of a boundary at finite distance. In generic examples, there are boundaries, fluxes and branes; the resulting spaces are non-Kahler.

Constraints on String Cosmology

String theory contains sources like orientifold planes that support higher derivative interactions. These interactions make possible static flux compactifications which are forbidden in supergravity. They can also lead to violations of the strong energy condition (SEC) which is needed for an accelerating universe. We examine how large a violation is possible in the context of the heterotic string compactified to four dimensions. We find that de Sitter solutions are still not possible but that classically forbidden anti-de Sitter solutions are possible.

Novel Branches of (0,2) Theories

We show that recently proposed linear sigma models with torsion can be obtained from unconventional branches of conventional gauge theories. This observation puts models with log interactions on firm footing. If non-anomalous multiplets are integrated out, the resulting low-energy theory involves log interactions of neutral fields. For these cases, we find a sigma model geometry which is both non-toric and includes brane sources. These are heterotic sigma models with branes. Surprisingly, there are massive models with compact complex non-Kahler target spaces, which include brane/anti-brane sources. The simplest conformal models describe wrapped heterotic NS5-branes. We present examples of both types.

Recent Developments in (0,2) Mirror Symmetry

Mirror symmetry of the type II string has a beautiful generalization to the heterotic string. This generalization, known as (0,2) mirror symmetry, is a field still largely in its infancy. We describe recent developments including the ideas behind quantum sheaf cohomology, the mirror map for deformations of (2,2) mirrors, the construction of mirror pairs from worldsheet duality, as well as an overview of some of the many open questions. The (0,2) mirrors of Hirzebruch surfaces are presented as a new example.

The Conformal Anomaly of M5-Branes

We show that the conformal anomaly for N M5-branes grows like $N^3$. The method we employ relates Coulomb branch interactions in six dimensions to interactions in four dimensions using supersymmetry. This leads to a relation between the six-dimensional conformal anomaly and the conformal anomaly of N=4 Yang-Mills. Along the way, we determine the structure of the four derivative interactions for the toroidally compactified (2,0) theory, while encountering interesting novelties in the structure of the six derivative interactions.

preprint2011arXiv

Non-Supersymmetric String Theory

A class of non-supersymmetric string backgrounds can be constructed using twists that involve space-time fermion parity. We propose a non-perturbative definition of string theory in these backgrounds via gauge theories with supersymmetry softly broken by twisted boundary conditions. The perturbative string spectrum is reproduced, and qualitative effects of the interactions are discussed. Along the way, we find an interesting mechanism for inflation. The end state of closed string tachyon condensation is a highly excited state in the gauge theory which, in all likelihood, does not have a geometric interpretation.

Geometries, Non-Geometries, and Fluxes

Using F-theory/heterotic duality, we describe a framework for analyzing non-geometric T2-fibered heterotic compactifications to six- and four-dimensions. Our results suggest that among T2-fibered heterotic string vacua, the non-geometric compactifications are just as typical as the geometric ones. We also construct four-dimensional solutions which have novel type IIB and M-theory dual descriptions. These duals are non-geometric with three- and four-form fluxes not of (2,1) or (2,2) Hodge type, respectively, and yet preserve at least N=1 supersymmetry.

The Leading Quantum Corrections to Stringy Kahler Potentials

The structure of stringy quantum corrections to four-dimensional effective theories is particularly interesting for string phenomenology and attempts to stabilize moduli. We consider the heterotic string compactified on a Calabi-Yau space. For this case, we compute the leading corrections to the kinetic terms of moduli fields. The structure of these corrections is largely dictated by the underlying higher-dimensional extended supersymmetry. We find corrections generically of order (alpha')^2 rather than of order (alpha')^3 found in type II compactifications or heterotic compactifications with the standard embedding. We explore the implications of these corrections for breaking no-scale structure.

Recursion Relations from Space-time Supersymmetry

We describe a method for obtaining relations between higher derivative interactions in supersymmetric effective actions. The method extends to all orders in the momentum expansion. As an application, we consider the string coupling dependence of the \hat{G}^{2k} λ^{16} interaction in type IIB string theory. Using supersymmetry, we show that each of these interactions satisfies a Poisson equation on the moduli space with sources determined by lower momentum interactions. We argue that these protected couplings are only renormalized by a finite number of string loops together with non-perturbative terms. Finally, we explore some consequences of the Poisson equation for low values of k.

(0,2) Duality

We construct dual descriptions of (0,2) gauged linear sigma models. In some cases, the dual is a (0,2) Landau-Ginzburg theory, while in other cases, it is a non-linear sigma model. The duality map defines an analogue of mirror symmetry for (0,2) theories. Using the dual description, we determine the instanton corrected chiral ring for some illustrative examples. This ring defines a (0,2) generalization of the quantum cohomology ring of (2,2) theories.

Twisting E8 Five-Branes

We consider the tensor theory on coincident E8 5-branes compactified on a three torus. Using string theory, we predict that there must be distinct components in the moduli space of this theory. We argue that new superconformal field theories are to be found in these sectors with, for example, global G2 and F4 symmetries. In some cases, twisted E8 5-branes can be identified with small instantons in non-simply-laced gauge groups. This allows us to determine the Higgs branch for the fixed point theory. We determine the Coulomb branch by using an M theory dual description involving partially frozen singularities. Along the way, we show that a D0-brane binds to two D4-branes, but not to an Sp-type O4-plane (despite the existence of a Higgs branch). These results are used to check various string/string dualities for which, in one case (quadruple versus NVS), we present a new argument. Finally, we describe the construction of new non-BPS branes as domain walls in various heterotic/type I string theories.

Saltatory Relaxation of the Cosmological Constant

We modify and extend an earlier proposal by Brown and Teitelboim to relax the effective cosmological term by nucleation of branes coupled to a three-index gauge potential. Microscopic considerations from string/M theory suggest two major innovations in the framework. First, the dependence of brane properties on the compactification of extra dimensions may generate a very small quantized unit for jumps in the effective cosmological term. Second, internal degrees of freedom for multiply coincident branes may enhance tunneling rates by exponentially large density of states factors. These new features essentially alter the relaxation dynamics. By requiring stability on the scale of the lifetime of the universe, rather than absolute stability, we derive a non-trivial relation between the supersymmetry breaking scale and the value of the cosmological term. It is plausibly, though not certainly, satisfied in Nature.

Supersymmetry and the Yang-Mills Effective Action at Finite N

We study the effective action of quantum mechanical SU(N) Yang-Mills theories with sixteen supersymmetries and N>2. We show that supersymmetry requires that the eight fermion terms in the supersymmetric completion of the $v^4$ terms be one-loop exact. We also show that the twelve fermion terms in the supersymmetric completion of the $v^6$ terms are two-loop exact for N=3. For N>3, this no longer seems to be true; we are able to find non-renormalization theorems for only certain twelve fermion structures. We call these structures `generalized F-terms.' We argue that as the rank of the gauge group is increased, there can be more generalized F-terms at higher orders in the derivative expansion.

A Relation Between N=8 Gauge Theories in Three Dimensions

We show that three-dimensional N=8 $Sp(N)$ and $SO(2N+1)$ gauge theories flow to the same strong coupling fixed point. As a consequence, the corresponding orientifold two-planes in type IIA string theory are described at strong coupling and low-energies by the same M theory background. In the large $N$ limit, these assertions are confirmed by studying discrete torsion in the supergravity theory corresponding to membranes on $R^8/Z_2$.

Supersymmetry and Higher Derivative Terms in the Effective Action of Yang-Mills Theories

Higher derivative terms in the effective action of certain Yang-Mills theories can be severely constrained by supersymmetry. We show that requiring sixteen supersymmetries in quantum mechanical gauge theory determines the $v^6$ term in the effective action. Even the numerical coefficient of the $v^6$ term is fixed in terms of lower derivative terms in the effective action.

New Perspectives on Yang-Mills Theories With Sixteen Supersymmetries

We describe various approaches that give matrix descriptions of compactified NS five-branes. As a result, we obtain matrix models for Yang-Mills theories with sixteen supersymmetries in dimensions $2,3,4$ and 5. The equivalence of the various approaches relates the Coulomb branch of certain gauge theories to the moduli space of instantons on $T^4$. We also obtain an equivalence between certain six-dimensional string theories. Further, we discuss how various perturbative and non-perturbative features of these Yang-Mills theories appear in their matrix formulations. The matrix model for four-dimensional Yang-Mills is manifestly S-dual. In this case, we describe how electric fluxes, magnetic fluxes and the interaction between vector particles are realized in the matrix model.
