From the Integer to the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect in Graphene

The fractional quantum Hall effect is a very particular manifestation of electronic correlations in two-dimensional systems in a strong perpendicular magnetic field. It arises as a consequence of a strong Coulomb repulsion between electrons in the same Landau level that conspires with a particular chirality of the electronic states. This chirality is inherited from the classical cyclotron motion, i.e. a particular sense of electronic rotation due to the orientation of the magnetic field. The specificity of the FQHE in graphene consists of a four-fold spin-valley degeneracy inherited from the electronic bands in the vicinity of the Fermi level. The relevant Coulomb interaction respects this SU(4) symmetry, and one is therefore confronted with a generic four-component fractional quantum Hall effect, as well as with other correlated four-component phases, such as spin-valley ferromagnetic states. The present article aims at a -- mainly theoretical -- discussion of these exotic phases, in comparison with experimental evidence for them.

Volkov-Pankratov states in topological superconductors

We study the in-gap states that appear at the boundaries of both 1D and 2D topological superconductors. While the massless Majorana quasiparticles are guaranteed to arise by the bulk-edge correspondence, we find that they could be accompanied by massive Volkov-Pankratov (VP) states which are present only when the interface is sufficiently smooth. These predictions can be tested in an s-wave superconductor with Rashba spin-orbit coupling placed on top of a magnetic domain wall. We calculate the spin-resolved local density of states of the VP states about the band inversion generated by a magnetic domain wall and find that they are oppositely spin-polarized on either side of the topological phase boundary. We also demonstrate that the spatial position, energy-level spacing, and spin polarization of the VP states can be modified by the introduction of in-plane electric fields.

Magnetic-field-induced relativistic properties in type-I and type-II Weyl semimetals

We investigate Weyl semimetals with tilted conical bands in a magnetic field. Even when the cones are overtilted (type-II Weyl semimetal), Landau-level quantization can be possible as long as the magnetic field is oriented close to the tilt direction. Most saliently, the tilt can be described within the relativistic framework of Lorentz transformations that give rise to a rich spectrum, displaying new transitions beyond the usual dipolar ones in the optical conductivity. We identify particular features in the latter that allow one to distinguish between semimetals of different types.

SU(4) Skyrmions in the $ν=\pm 1$ Quantum Hall State of Graphene

We explore different skyrmion types in the lowest Landau level of graphene at a filling factor $ν=\pm 1$. In addition to the formation of spin and valley pseudospin skyrmions, we show that another type of spin-valley entangled skyrmions can be stabilized in graphene due to an approximate SU(4) spin-valley symmetry that is affected by sublattice symmetry-breaking terms. These skyrmions have a clear signature in spin-resolved density measurements on the lattice scale, and we discuss the expected patterns for the different skyrmion types.

Magneto-optics of quasi-relativistic electrons in tilted Dirac cones in graphene and $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$

Massless Dirac fermions occur as low-energy modes in several quasi-two-dimensional condensed matter systems such as graphene, the surface of bulk topological insulators, and in layered organic semiconductors. When the rotational symmetry in such systems is reduced either by an in-plane electric field or an intrinsic tilt of the Dirac cones, the allowed dipolar optical transitions evolve from a few selected transitions into a wide fan of interband transitions. We show that the Lorentz covariance of the low-energy carriers allows for a concise analysis of the emerging magneto-optical properties. We predict that infrared absorption spectra yield quantitative information on the tilted Dirac cone structure in organic compounds such as $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$.

Dirac Fermions in condensed matter and beyond

This review aims at a theoretical discussion of Dirac points in two-dimensional systems. Whereas Dirac points and Dirac fermions are prominent low-energy electrons in graphene (two-dimensional graphite), research on Dirac fermions in low-energy physics has spread beyond condensed-matter systems. In these alternative systems, a large versatility in the manipulation of the relevant band parameters can be achieved. This allows for a systematic study of the motion and different possible fusions of Dirac points, which are beyond the physical limits of graphene. We introduce the basic properties of Dirac fermions and the motion of Dirac points here and aim at a topological classification of these motions. The theoretical concepts are illustrated in particular model systems.

Magnetoplasmons of the tilted-anisotropic Dirac cone material $α-$(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$

We study the collective modes of a low-energy continuum model of the quasi-two-dimensional electron liquid in a layer of the organic compound $α-$(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ in a perpendicular magnetic field. As testified by zero magnetic field transport experiments and \textit{ab initio} theory, this material hosts both massless and massive low-energy carriers, the former being described by tilted and anisotropic Dirac cones. The polarizability of these cones is anisotropic, and two sets of magnetoplasmon modes occur between any two cyclotron resonances. We show that the tilt of the cones causes a unique intervalley damping effect: the upper hybrid mode of one cone is damped by the particle-hole continuum of the other cone in generic directions. We analyse how the presence of massive carriers affects the response of the system, and demonstrate how doping can tune $α-$(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ between regimes of isotropic and anisotropic screening.

Emergent Spin Liquids in the Hubbard Model on the Anisotropic Honeycomb Lattice

We study the repulsive Hubbard model on an anisotropic honeycomb lattice within a mean-field and a slave-rotor treatment. In addition to the known semi-metallic and band-insulating phases, obtained for very weak interactions, and the anti-ferromagnetic phase at large couplings, various insulating spin-liquid phases develop at intermediate couplings. Whereas some of these spin liquids have gapless spinon excitations, a gapped one occupies a large region of the phase diagram and becomes the predominant phase for large hopping anisotropies. This phase can be understood in terms of weakly-coupled strongly dimerized states.

Tilted-Cone-induced easy-plane pseudo-spin ferromagnet and Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in massless Dirac fermions

The possible quantum Hall ferromagnet at a filling factor $ν=0$ is investigated for the zero-energy (N=0) Landau level of the two dimensional massless Dirac fermions in $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ under pressure with tilted cones and a twofold valley degeneracy resulting from time-reversal symmetry. In the case of the Dirac cones without tilting, the long-range Coulomb interaction in the N=0 Landau level exhibits the SU(2) valley-pseudo-spin symmetry even to the order $O(a/l_{\rm H})$, in contrast to $N \ne 0$ Landau levels, where $a$ and $l_{\rm H}$ represent the lattice constant and the magnetic length, respectively. Such a characteristic comes from a fact that zero-energy states in a particular valley are restricted to only one of the spinor components, whereas the other spinor component is necessarily zero. In the case of the tilted Dirac cones as found in $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$, one obtains a non-zero value of the second component and then the ackscattering processes between valleys becomes non-zero. It is shown that this fact can lead to easy-plane pseudospin ferromagnetism (XY-type). In this case, the phase fluctuations of the order parameters can be described by the XY model leading to Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at lower temperature. In view of these theoretical results, experimental findings in resistivity of $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ are discussed.
