Piezo-optomechanical cantilever modulators for VLSI visible photonics

Visible-wavelength very large-scale integration (VLSI) photonic circuits have potential to play important roles in quantum information and sensing technologies. The realization of scalable, high-speed, and low-loss photonic mesh circuits depends on reliable and well-engineered visible photonic components. Here we report a low-voltage optical phase shifter based on piezo-actuated mechanical cantilevers, fabricated on a CMOS compatible, 200 mm wafer-based visible photonics platform. We show linear phase and amplitude modulation with 6 V$_π$-cm in differential operation, -1.5 dB to -2 dB insertion loss, and up to 40 dB contrast in the 700 nm - 780 nm range. By adjusting selected cantilever parameters, we demonstrate a low-displacement and a high-displacement device, both exhibiting a nearly flat frequency response from DC to a peak mechanical resonance at 23 MHz and 6.8 MHz respectively, which through resonant enhancement of Q~40, further decreases the operating voltage down to 0.15 V$_π$-cm.

Quantum-Well Laser Diodes for Frequency Comb Spectroscopy

We demonstrate simple optical frequency combs based on semiconductor quantum well laser diodes. The frequency comb spectrum can be tailored by choice of material properties and quantum-well widths, providing spectral flexibility. Finally, we demonstrate the mutual coherence of these devices by using two frequency combs on the same device to generate a radio-frequency dual comb spectrum.

Frequency comb generation at 800nm in waveguide array quantum well diode lasers

A traveling wave model for a semiconductor diode laser based on quantum wells is presented as well as a comprehensive theoretical model of the lasing dynamics produced by the intensity discrimination of the nonlinear mode-coupling in a waveguide array. By leveraging a recently developed model for the detailed semiconductor gain dynamics, the temporal shaping effects of the nonlinear mode-coupling induced by the waveguide arrays can be characterized. Specifically, the enhanced nonlinear pulse shaping provided by the waveguides are capable of generating stable frequency combs wavelength of 800 nm in a GaAs device, a parameter regime not feasible for stable combline generation using a single waveguide. Extensive numerical simulations showed that stable waveform generation could be achieved and optimized by an appropriate choice of the linear waveguide coupling coefficient, quantum well depth, and the input currents to the first and second waveguides. The model provides a first demonstration that a compact, efficient and robust on-chip comb source can be produced in GaAs.

Stable Numerical Schemes for Nonlinear Dispersive Equations with Counter-Propagation and Gain Dynamics

We develop a stable and efficient numerical scheme for modeling the optical field evolution in a nonlinear dispersive cavity with counter propagating waves and complex, semiconductor physics gain dynamics that are expensive to evaluate. Our stability analysis is characterized by a von-Neumann analysis which shows that many standard numerical schemes are unstable due to competing physical effects in the propagation equations. We show that the combination of a predictor-corrector scheme with an operator-splitting not only results in a stable scheme, but provides a highly efficient, single-stage evaluation of the gain dynamics. Given that the gain dynamics is the rate-limiting step of the algorithm, our method circumvents the numerical instability induced by the other cavity physics when evaluating the gain in an efficient manner. We demonstrate the stability and efficiency of the algorithm on a diode laser model which includes three waveguides and semiconductor gain dynamics. The laser is able to produce a repeating temporal waveform and stable optical comblines, thus demonstrating that frequency combs generation may be possible in chip scale, diode lasers.

A New Approach to Cascaded Stimulated Brillouin Scattering

We present a novel approach to cascaded stimulated Brillouin scattering and frequency comb generation in which the multitude of interacting pump, Stokes, and anti-Stokes optical fields are described by a single forward wave and a single backward wave at a single carrier frequency. The envelopes of these two waves are modulated through coupling to a single acoustic oscillation and through four-wave mixing. Starting from a single pump field, we observe the emergence of a comb of frequencies as the intensity is increased. The set of three differential equations derived here are sufficient to describe the generation of any number of Brillouin sidebands in oscillator systems that would have required hundreds of coupled equations in the standard approach. We test the new approach on some published experiments and find excellent agreement with the results.

Interfacing whispering-gallery microresonators and free space light with cavity enhanced Rayleigh scattering

Whispering gallery mode resonators (WGMRs) take advantage of strong light confinement and long photon lifetime for applications in sensing, optomechanics, microlasers and quantum optics. However, their rotational symmetry and low radiation loss impede energy exchange between WGMs and the surrounding. As a result, free-space coupling of light into and from WGMRs is very challenging. In previous schemes, resonators are intentionally deformed to break circular symmetry to enable free-space coupling of carefully aligned focused light, which comes with bulky size and alignment issue that hinder the realization of compact WGMR applications. Here, we report a new class of nanocouplers based on cavity enhanced Rayleigh scattering from nano-scatterer(s) on resonator surface, and demonstrate whispering gallery microlaser by free-space optical pumping of an Ytterbium doped silica microtoroid via the scatterers. This new scheme will not only expand the range of applications enabled by WGMRs, but also provide a possible route to integrate them into solar powered green photonics.
