On the stability domain of a class of linear systems of fractional order

In this paper, the shape of the stability domain S^q for a class of difference systems defined by the Caputo forward difference operator D^q of order q\in (0, 1) is numerically analyzed. It is shown numerically that due to of power of the negative base in the expression of the stability domain, in addition to the known cardioid-like shapes, S^q could present supplementary regions where the stability is not verified. The Mandelbrot map of fractional order is considered as an illustrative example. In addition, it is conjectured that for $q < 0.5$, the shape of S^q does not cover the main body of the underlying Mandelbrot set of fractional order as in the case of integer order.

Fractional order logistic map; Numerical approach

In this paper the fractional order logistic map in the sense of Caputo's fractional differences is numerically approached. It is shown that the necessary iterations number to avoid transients must be of order of thousand, not of order of hundreds as commonly used in several works. Also, it is revealed an interesting phenomenon according to which for every initial condition it correspond a different bifurcation diagram. This phenomenon seems to appear also in other FO difference systems, fact which could represent an obstacle for the numerical analysis. A short Matlab code is used to obtain the results.

Symmetry-breaking and bifurcation diagrams of fractional-order maps

In this paper two important aspects related to Caputo fractional-order discrete variant of a class of maps defined on the complex plane, are analytically and numerically revealed: attractors symmetry-broken induced by the fractional-order and the sensible problem of determining the right bifurcation diagram of discrete systems of fractional-order. It is proved that maps of integer order with dihedral symmetry or cycle symmetry loose their symmetry once they are transformed in fractional-order maps. Also, it is conjectured that, contrarily to integer-order maps, determining the bifurcation diagrams of fractional-order maps is far from being a clarified problem. Two examples are considered: dihedral logistic map and cyclic logistic map.

Hidden and self-exited attractors in a heterogeneous Cournot oligopoly model

In this paper it is numerically proved that a heterogeneous Cournot oligopoly model presents hidden and self-excited attractors. The system has a single equilibrium and a line of equilibria. The bifurcation diagrams show that the system admits several attractors coexistence windows, where the hidden attractors can be found. Intensive numerical tests have been done.

Chaos suppression in a Gompertz-like discrete system of fractional order

In this paper we introduce the fractional-order variant of a Gompertz-like discrete system. The chaotic behavior is suppressed with an impulsive control algorithm. The numerical integration and the Lyapunov exponent are obtained by means of the discrete fractional calculus. To verify numerically the obtained results, beside the Lyapunov exponent, the tools offered by the 0-1 test are used.

Chaos control of Hastings-Powell model by combining chaotic motions

In this paper, we propose a Parameter Switching (PS) algorithm as a new chaos control method for the Hastings-Powell (HP) system. The PS algorithm is a convergent scheme that switches the control parameter within a set of values while the controlled system is numerically integrated. The attractor obtained with the PS algorithm matches the attractor obtained by integrating the system with the parameter replaced by the averaged value of the switched parameter values. The switching rule can be applied periodically or randomly over a set of given values. In this way, every stable cycle of the HP system can be approximated if its underlying parameter value equalizes the average value of the switching values. Moreover, the PS algorithm can be viewed as a generalization of Parrondo's game, which is applied for the first time to the HP system, by showing that losing strategy can win: "losing + losing = winning". If "loosing" is replaced with "chaos" and, "winning" with "order" (as the opposite to "chaos"), then by switching the parameter value in the HP system within two values, which generate chaotic motions, the PS algorithm can approximate a stable cycle so that symbolically one can write "chaos + chaos = regular". Also, by considering a different parameter control, new complex dynamics of the HP model are revealed.

Note on a parameter switching method for nonlinear ODEs

In this paper we study analytically a parameter switching (PS) algorithm applied to a class of systems of ODE, depending on a single real parameter. The algorithm allows the numerical approximation of any solution of the underlying system by simple periodical switches of the control parameter. Near a general approach of the convergence of the PS algorithm, some dissipative properties are investigated and the dynamical behavior of solutions is investigated with the Lyapunov function method. A numerical example is presented

Looking more closely to the Rabinovich-Fabrikant system

Recently, we look more closely into the Rabinovich-Fabrikant system, after a decade of the study in [Danca & Chen, 2004], discovering some new characteristics such as cycling chaos, transient chaos, chaotic hidden attractors and a new kind of saddles-like attractor. In addition to extensive and accurate numerical analysis, on the assumptive existence of heteroclinic orbits, we provide a few of their approximations.

Continuous approximations of a class of piece-wise continuous systems

In this paper we provide a rigorous mathematical foundation for continuous approximations of a class of systems with piece-wise continuous functions. By using techniques from the theory of differential inclusions, the underlying piece-wise functions can be locally or globally approximated. The approximation results can be used to model piece-wise continuous-time dynamical systems of integer or fractional-order. In this way, by overcoming the lack of numerical methods for diffrential equations of fractional-order with discontinuous right-hand side, unattainable procedures for systems modeled by this kind of equations, such as chaos control, synchronization, anticontrol and many others, can be easily implemented. Several examples are presented and three comparative applications are studied.

Parameter switching in a generalized Duffing system: Finding the stable attractors

This paper presents a simple periodic parameter-switching method which can find any stable limit cycle that can be numerically approximated in a generalized Duffing system. In this method, the initial value problem of the system is numerically integrated and the control parameter is switched periodically within a chosen set of parameter values. The resulted attractor matches with the attractor obtained by using the average of the switched values. The accurate match is verified by phase plots and Hausdorff distance measure in extensive simulations.

Synchronization of piece-wise continuous systems of fractional order

The aim of this study is to prove analytically that synchronization of a piece-wise continuous class of systems of fractional order can be achieved. Based on our knowledge, there are no numerical methods to integrate differential equations with discontinuous right hand side of fractional order which model these systems. Therefore, via Filippov's regularization [1] and Cellina's Theorem [2,3], we prove that the initial value problem can be converted into a continuous problem of fractional-order, to which numerical methods for fractional orders apply. In this way, the synchronization problem transforms into a standard problem for continuous systems of fractional order. Three examples of fractional-order piece-wise systems are considered: Sprott system, Chen and Shimizu-Morioka system.

A multistep algorithm for ODEs

The objective of this paper is to prove the convergence of a linear implicit multi-step numerical method for ordinary differential equations. The algorithm is obtained via Taylor approximations. The convergence is proved following the Dahlquist theory. As an additional topic, the time stability is established too. Comparative tests between some of the most known numerical methods and this method are presented.

Approach of a class of discontinuous dynamical systems of fractional order: existence of the solutions

In this letter we are concerned with the possibility to approach the existence of solutions to a class of discontinuous dynamical systems of fractional order. In this purpose, the underlying initial value problem is transformed into a fractional set-valued problem. Next, the Cellina's Theorem is applied leading to a single-valued continuous initial value problem of fractional order. The existence of solutions is assured by a Péano like theorem for ordinary differential equations of fractional order.

Chaotic behavior of a class of discontinuous dynamical systems of fractional-order

In this paper the chaos persistence in a class of discontinuous dynamical systems of fractional-order is analyzed. To that end, the Initial Value Problem is first transformed, by using the Filippov regularization [1], into a set-valued problem of fractional-order, then by Cellina's approximate selection theorem [2, 3], the problem is approximated into a single-valued fractional-order problem, which is numerically solved by using a numerical scheme proposed by Diethelm, Ford and Freed [4]. Two typical examples of systems belonging to this class are analyzed and simulated.

Synthesizing attractors of Hindmarsh-Rose neuronal systems

In this paper a periodic parameter switching scheme is applied to the Hindmarsh-Rose neuronal system to synthesize certain attractors. Results show numerically, via computer graphic simulations, that the obtained synthesized attractor belongs to the class of all admissible attractors for the Hindmarsh-Rose neuronal system and matches the averaged attractor obtained with the control parameter replaced with the averaged switched parameter values. This feature allows us to imagine that living beings are able to maintain vital behavior while the control parameter switches so that their dynamical behavior is suitable for the given environment.

Synthesizing the Lü attractor by parameter-switching

In this letter we synthesize numerically the Lü attractor starting from the generalized Lorenz and Chen systems, by switching the control parameter inside a chosen finite set of values on every successive adjacent finite time intervals. A numerical method with fixed step size for ODEs is used to integrate the underlying initial value problem. As numerically and computationally proved in this work, the utilized attractors synthesis algorithm introduced by the present author before, allows to synthesize the Lü attractor starting from any finite set of parameter values.
