Integrable deformations of AdS/CFT

In this paper we study in detail the deformations introduced in [1] of the integrable structures of the AdS$_{2,3}$ integrable models. We do this by embedding the corresponding scattering matrices into the most general solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. We show that there are several non-trivial embeddings and corresponding deformations. We work out crossing symmetry for these models and study their symmetry algebras and representations. In particular, we identify a new elliptic deformation of the $\rm AdS_3 \times S^3 \times M^4$ string sigma model.

Spin Chain Overlaps and the Twisted Yangian

Using considerations based on the thermodynamical Bethe ansatz as well representation theory of twisted Yangians we derive an exact expression for the overlaps between the Bethe eigenstates of the $SO(6)$ spin chain and matrix product states built from matrices whose commutators generate an irreducible representation of $\mathfrak{so}(5)$. The latter play the role of boundary states in a domain wall version of ${\cal N}=4$ SYM theory which has non-vanishing, $SO(5)$ symmetric vacuum expectation values on one side of a co-dimension one wall. This theory, which constitutes a defect CFT, is known to be dual to a D3-D7 probe brane system. We likewise show that the same methodology makes it possible to prove an overlap formula, earlier presented without proof, which is of relevance for the similar D3-D5 probe brane system.

The Bethe ansatz for a new integrable open quantum system

In this paper we apply the nested algebraic Bethe ansatz to compute the eigenvalues and the Bethe equations of the transfer matrix of the new integrable Lindbladian found in [1]. We show that it can be written as an integrable spin chain consisting of two interacting XXZ spin chains. We numerically compute the Liouville gap and its dependence on the parameters in the system such as scaling with the system length and interaction strength.

Classifying integrable spin-1/2 chains with nearest neighbour interactions

We classify all fundamental integrable spin chains with two-dimensional local Hilbert space which have regular R-matrices of difference form. This means that the R-matrix underlying the integrable structures is of the form R(u,v)=R(u-v) and reduces to the permutation operator at some particular point. We find a total of 14 independent solutions, 8 of which correspond to well-known eight or lower vertex models. The remaining 6 models appear to be new and some have peculiar properties such as not being diagonalizable or being nilpotent. Furthermore, for even R-matrices, we find a bijection between solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation and the graded Yang-Baxter equation which extends our results to the graded two-dimensional case.

Classifying nearest-neighbour interactions and deformations of AdS

We classify all regular solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation of eight-vertex type. Regular solutions correspond to spin chains with nearest-neighbour interactions. We find a total of four independent solutions. Two are related to the usual six- and eight-vertex models that have R-matrices of difference form. We find two completely new solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation, which are manifestly of non-difference form. These new solutions contain the S-matrices of the AdS2 and AdS3 integrable models as a special case. Consequently, we can classify all possible integrable deformations of eight-vertex type of these holographic integrable systems.

New integrable 1D models of superconductivity

In this paper we find new integrable one-dimensional lattice models of electrons. We classify all such nearest-neighbour integrable models with su(2)xsu(2) symmetry following the procedure first introduced in arXiv:1904.12005. We find 12 R-matrices of difference form, some of which can be related to known models such as the XXX spin chain and the free Hubbard model, and some are new models. In addition, integrable generalizations of the Hubbard model are found by keeping the kinetic term of the Hamiltonian and adding all terms which preserve fermion number. We find that most of the new models can not be diagonalized using the standard nested Bethe Ansatz.

One-point functions in AdS/dCFT

In this review we discuss recent advances in the computation of one-point functions in defect conformal field theories with holographic duals. We briefly review the appearance of integrable spin chains in N=4 super Yang--Mills theory and reformulate the problem of computing one-point functions to determining overlaps between Bethe states and a Matrix Product State. We will then demonstrate how these overlaps can be computed by determinant formulas. This work is based on lectures given at the Young Researchers Integrability School and Workshop 2018. To appear in a special issue of J. Phys. A.

One-loop Wilson loops and the particle-interface potential in AdS/dCFT

We initiate the calculation of quantum corrections to Wilson loops in a class of four-dimensional defect conformal field theories with vacuum expectation values based on N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. Concretely, we consider an infinite straight Wilson line, obtaining explicit results for the one-loop correction to its expectation value in the large-N limit. This allows us to extract the particle-interface potential of the theory. In a further double-scaling limit, we compare our results to those of a previous calculation in the dual string-theory set-up consisting of a D5-D3 probe-brane system with flux, and we find perfect agreement.

Two-point functions in AdS/dCFT and the boundary conformal bootstrap equations

We calculate the leading contributions to the connected two-point functions of protected scalar operators in the defect version of N=4 SYM theory which is dual to the D5-D3 probe-brane system with k units of background gauge field flux. This involves several types of two-point functions which are vanishing in the theory without the defect, such as two-point functions of operators of unequal conformal dimension. We furthermore exploit the operator product expansion (OPE) and the boundary operator expansion (BOE), which form the basis of the boundary conformal bootstrap equations, to extract conformal data both about the defect CFT and about N=4 SYM theory without the defect. From the knowledge of the one- and two-point functions of the defect theory, we extract certain structure constants of N=4 SYM theory using the (bulk) OPE and constrain certain bulk-bulk-to-boundary couplings using the BOE. The extraction of the former relies on a non-trivial, polynomial k dependence of the one-point functions, which we explicitly demonstrate. In addition, it requires the knowledge of the one-point functions of SU$(2)$ descendant operators, which we likewise explicitly determine.

AdS/dCFT one-point functions of the SU(3) sector

We propose a closed formula for the tree-level one-point functions of non-protected operators belonging to an SU(3) sub-sector of the defect CFT dual to the D3-D5 probe brane system with background gauge field flux, k, valid for k=2. The formula passes a number of non-trivial analytical and numerical tests. Our proposal is based on expressing the one-point functions as an overlap between a Bethe eigenstate of the SU(3) spin chain and a certain matrix product state, deriving various factorization properties of the Gaudin norm and performing explicit computations for shorter spin chains. As its SU(2) counterpart, the one-point function formula for the SU(3) sub-sector is of determinant type. We discuss the the differences with the SU(2) case and the challenges in extending the present formula beyond k=2.

One-loop one-point functions in gauge-gravity dualities with defects

We initiate the calculation of loop corrections to correlation functions in 4D defect CFTs. More precisely, we consider N=4 SYM with a codimension-one defect separating two regions of space, x_3>0 and x_3<0, where the gauge group is SU(N) and SU(N-k), respectively. This set-up is made possible by some of the real scalar fields acquiring a non-vanishing and x_3-dependent vacuum expectation value for x_3>0. The holographic dual is the D3-D5 probe brane system where the D5 brane geometry is AdS_4 x S^2 and a background gauge field has k units of flux through the S^2. We diagonalise the mass matrix of the defect CFT making use of fuzzy-sphere coordinates and we handle the x_3-dependence of the mass terms in the 4D Minkowski space propagators by reformulating these as standard massive AdS_4 propagators. Furthermore, we show that only two Feynman diagrams contribute to the one-loop correction to the one-point function of any single-trace operator and we explicitly calculate this correction in the planar limit for the simplest chiral primary. The result of this calculation is compared to an earlier string-theory computation in a certain double-scaling limit, finding perfect agreement. Finally, we discuss how to generalise our calculation to any single-trace operator, to finite N and to other types of observables such as Wilson loops.

An algebraic approach to the Hubbard model

We study the algebraic structure of an integrable Hubbard-Shastry type lattice model associated with the centrally extended su(2|2) superalgebra. This superalgebra underlies Beisert's AdS/CFT worldsheet R-matrix and Shastry's R-matrix. The considered model specializes to the one-dimensional Hubbard model in a certain limit. We demonstrate that Yangian symmetries of the R-matrix specialize to the Yangian symmetry of the Hubbard model found by Korepin and Uglov. Moreover, we show that the Hubbard model Hamiltonian has an algebraic interpretation as the so-called secret symmetry. We also discuss Yangian symmetries of the A and B models introduced by Frolov and Quinn.

One-point Functions in AdS/dCFT from Matrix Product States

One-point functions of certain non-protected scalar operators in the defect CFT dual to the D3-D5 probe brane system with k units of world volume flux can be expressed as overlaps between Bethe eigenstates of the Heisenberg spin chain and a matrix product state. We present a closed expression of determinant form for these one-point functions, valid for any value of k. The determinant formula factorizes into the k=2 result times a k-dependent prefactor. Making use of the transfer matrix of the Heisenberg spin chain we recursively relate the matrix product state for higher even and odd k to the matrix product state for k=2 and k=3 respectively. We furthermore find evidence that the matrix product states for k=2 and k=3 are related via a ratio of Baxter's Q-operators. The general k formula has an interesting thermodynamical limit involving a non-trivial scaling of k, which indicates that the match between string and field theory one-point functions found for chiral primaries might be tested for non-protected operators as well. We revisit the string computation for chiral primaries and discuss how it can be extended to non-protected operators.

One-point Functions in Defect CFT and Integrability

We calculate planar tree level one-point functions of non-protected operators in the defect conformal field theory dual to the D3-D5 brane system with k units of the world volume flux. Working in the operator basis of Bethe eigenstates of the Heisenberg XXX_{1/2} spin chain we express the one-point functions as overlaps of these eigenstates with a matrix product state. For k=2 we obtain a closed expression of determinant form for any number of excitations, and in the case of half-filling we find a relation with the Néel state. In addition, we present a number of results for the limiting case of infinite k.

Constraining subleading soft gluon and graviton theorems

We show that the form of the recently proposed subleading soft graviton and gluon theorems in any dimension are severely constrained by elementary arguments based on Poincaré and gauge invariance as well as a self-consistency condition arising from the distributional nature of scattering amplitudes. Combined with the assumption of a local form as it would arise from a Ward identity the orbital part of the subleading operators is completely fixed by the leading universal Weinberg soft pole behavior. The polarization part of the differential subleading soft operators in turn is determined up to a single numerical factor for each hard leg at every order in the soft momentum expansion. In four dimensions, factorization of the Lorentz group allows to fix the subleading operators completely.

preprint2014arXiv

Factorized soft graviton theorems at loop level

We analyze the low-energy behavior of scattering amplitudes involving gravitons at loop level in four dimensions. The single-graviton soft limit is controlled by soft operators which have been argued to separate into a factorized piece and a non-factorizing infrared divergent contribution. In this note we show that the soft operators responsible for the factorized contributions are strongly constrained by gauge and Poincare invariance under the assumption of a local structure. We show that the leading and subleading orders in the soft-momentum expansion can not receive radiative corrections. The first radiative correction occurs for the sub-subleading soft graviton operator and is one-loop exact. It depends on only two undetermined coefficients which should reflect the field content of the theory under consideration.

On the exact spectrum and mirror duality of the (AdS_5 x S^5)_eta superstring

We discuss the spectrum of a string propagating on eta-deformed AdS_5 x S^5 by treating its world-sheet theory as an integrable quantum field theory. The exact S-matrix of this field theory is given by a q-deformation of the AdS_5 x S^5 world-sheet S-matrix with real deformation parameter. By considering mirror (double Wick-rotated) versions of these world-sheet theories we give the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz description of their exact finite size spectra. Interestingly, this class of models maps onto itself under the mirror transformation. At the level of the string this appears to say that the light-cone worldsheet theories of strings on particular pairs of backgrounds are related by a double Wick rotation, a feature we call 'mirror duality'. We provide a partial check of these statements at the level of the sigma model by considering reduced actions and their corresponding (mirror) giant magnon solutions.

Integrable boundaries in AdS/CFT: revisiting the Z=0 giant graviton and D7-brane

We consider the worldsheet boundary scattering and the corresponding boundary algebras for the Z=0 giant graviton and the Z=0 D7-brane in the AdS/CFT correspondence. We consider two approaches to the boundary scattering, the usual one governed by the (generalized) twisted Yangians and the q-deformed model of these boundaries governed by the quantum affine coideal subalgebras. We show that the q-deformed approach leads to boundary algebras that are of a more compact form than the corresponding twisted Yangians, and thus are favourable to use for explicit calculations. We obtain the q-deformed reflection matrices for both boundaries which in the q->1 limit specialize to the ones obtained using twisted Yangians.

The Quantum Deformed Mirror TBA II

We discuss the description of generic excited states in the quantum deformed AdS_5 x S^5 mirror thermodynamic Bethe ansatz and derive the associated Y-system. This Y-system shows an interesting new feature; it depends explicitly on the excited state under consideration. Similarly, it also depends on twisted boundary conditions. We construct the asymptotic solution of these TBA and Y-system equations by deriving the twisted transfer matrix for the quantum deformed Hubbard model and finding the deformed mirror bound state dressing phase. This asymptotic construction is insensitive to the precise nature of the deformation, and thereby provides a nontrivial check of the interesting new features which arise precisely at roots of unity.

Coideal Quantum Affine Algebra and Boundary Scattering of the Deformed Hubbard Chain

We consider boundary scattering for a semi-infinite one-dimensional deformed Hubbard chain with boundary conditions of the same type as for the Y=0 giant graviton in the AdS/CFT correspondence. We show that the recently constructed quantum affine algebra of the deformed Hubbard chain has a coideal subalgebra which is consistent with the reflection (boundary Yang-Baxter) equation. We derive the corresponding reflection matrix and furthermore show that the aforementioned algebra in the rational limit specializes to the (generalized) twisted Yangian of the Y=0 giant graviton.

The spectral problem for strings on twisted AdS_5 x S^5

We discuss the spectral problem for integrable superstrings on generically twisted AdS_5 x S^5, meaning all its orbifolds and TsT transformed versions. We explicitly give the asymptotic description of these theories through a twisted transfer matrix, and carefully match the geometric deformations with twists allowed by integrability. We then discuss the mirror TBA equations that describe these theories at finite size. This unifies the treatment of various specific deformations previously considered in this setting, and extends it to completely general twists.

Orbifolded Konishi from the Mirror TBA

Starting with a discussion of the general applicability of the simplified mirror TBA equations to simple deformations of the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring, we proceed to study a specific type of orbifold to which the undeformed simplified TBA equations directly apply. We then use this set of equations, as well as Luscher's approach, to determine the NLO wrapping correction to the energy of what we call the orbifolded Konishi state, and show that they perfectly agree. In addition we discuss wrapping corrections to the ground state energy of the orbifolded model under consideration.

The Bound State S-Matrix for AdS5 x S5 Superstring

We determine the S-matrix that describes scattering of arbitrary bound states in the light-cone string theory in AdS5 x S5. The corresponding construction relies on the Yangian symmetry and the superspace formalism for the bound state representations. The basic analytic structure supporting the S-matrix entries turns out to be the hypergeometric function 4F3. We show that for particular bound state numbers it reproduces all the scattering matrices previously obtained in the literature. Our findings should be relevant for the TBA and Luescher approaches to the finite-size spectral problem. They also shed some light on the construction of the universal R-matrix for the centrally-extended psu(2|2) superalgebra.

Twist operators in N=4 beta-deformed theory

In this paper we derive both the leading order finite size corrections for twist-2 and twist-3 operators and the next-to-leading order finite-size correction for twist-2 operators in beta-deformed SYM theory. The obtained results respect the principle of maximum transcendentality as well as reciprocity. We also find that both wrapping corrections go to zero in the large spin limit. Moreover, for twist-2 operators we studied the pole structure and compared it against leading BFKL predictions.

Twisting the Mirror TBA

We study finite-size corrections to the magnon dispersion relation in three models which differ from string theory on AdS5 x S5 in their boundary conditions. Asymptotically, this is accomplished by twisting the transfer matrix in a way which manifestly preserves integrability. In model I all world-sheet fields are periodic, whereas model II represents a particular orbifold of AdS5 x S5 and model III is a beta-deformed theory. For models I and II we construct the one-particle TBA equations and use them to determine the leading finite-size correction to the asymptotic Bethe equation. We also make some interesting observations concerning the quantization conditions for the momentum. For the same models we compute the leading and for model II the next-to-leading order finite-size corrections to the asymptotic magnon dispersion relation. Furthermore, we apply Lüscher's formulae to compute the leading finite-size corrections in beta-deformed theory. In addition to reproducing known results, we provide new predictions for two-particle states from the sl(2) sector, to be confronted with explicit field-theoretic calculations in the dual gauge theory. Finally, we prove that the leading finite-size correction to the energy of an sl(2) magnon in orbifold theory is the same as the one for an su(2) magnon in beta-deformed theory for special values of beta. We also speculate that for these values of beta our result for the next-to-leading order correction in the orbifold model might coincide with the corresponding correction to the energy of su(2) magnon in beta-deformed theory.

On Yangian and Long Representations of the Centrally Extended su(2|2) Superalgebra

The centrally extended su(2|2) superalgebra is an asymptotic symmetry of the light-cone string sigma model on AdS5 x S5. We consider an evaluation representation of the conventional Yangian built over a particular 16-dimensional long representation of the centrally extended su(2|2). Interestingly, we find that S-matrices compatible with this evaluation representation do not exist. On the other hand, by requiring centrally extended su(2|2) invariance and explicitly solving the Yang-Baxter equation, we find a scattering matrix for long-short representations of the Lie superalgebra. We notice that this S-matrix is invariant under a different representation of non-evaluation type, induced from the tensor product of short representations. Our findings concern the conventional Yangian only, and are not applied to possible algebraic extensions of the latter.

The S-matrix of the AdS5 x S5 superstring

In this article we review the world-sheet scattering theory of strings on AdS 5 x S5. The asymptotic spectrum of this world-sheet theory contains both fundamental particles and bound states of the latter. We explicitly derive the S-matrix that describes scattering of arbitrary bound states. The key feature that enables this derivation is the so-called Yangian symmetry which is related to the centrally extended su(2|2) superalgebra. Subsequently, we study the universal algebraic properties of the found S-matrix. As in many integrable models, the S-matrix plays a key role in the determination of the energy spectrum. In this context, we employ the Bethe ansatz approach to compute the large volume energy spectrum of string bound states.
