Partial bosonisation for the two-dimensional Hubbard model: How well does it work?

Partial bosonisation of the two-dimensional Hubbard model focuses the functional renormalisation flow on channels in which interactions become strong and local order sets in. We compare the momentum structure of the four-fermion vertex, obtained on the basis of a patching approximation, to an effective bosonic description. For parameters in the antiferromagnetic phase near the onset of local antiferromagnetic order, the interaction of the electrons is indeed well described by the exchange of collective bosonic degrees of freedom. The residual four-fermion vertex after the subtraction of the bosonic exchange contribution is small. We propose that similar partial bosonisation techniques can improve the accuracy of renormalisation flow studies also for the case of competing order.

Landau gauge Yang-Mills correlation functions

We investigate Landau gauge $SU(3)$ Yang-Mills theory in a systematic vertex expansion scheme for the effective action with the functional renormalisation group. Particular focus is put on the dynamical creation of the gluon mass gap at non-perturbative momenta and the consistent treatment of quadratic divergences. The non-perturbative ghost and transverse gluon propagators as well as the momentum-dependent ghost-gluon, three-gluon and four-gluon vertices are calculated self-consistently with the classical action as only input. The apparent convergence of the expansion scheme is discussed and within the errors, our numerical results are in quantitative agreement with available lattice results.

Pion and $η$-meson mass splitting at the two-flavour chiral crossover

We study the splitting in the screening mass of pions and the $η$-meson across the chiral crossover. This splitting is determined by the 't Hooft determinant. We use results for the renormalisation group scale dependence of the 't Hooft determinant obtained within the functional renomalisation group in quenched QCD with two flavours. The scale dependence of the 't Hooft determinant is mapped to its temperature dependence with the help of a Polyakov-quark-meson model. As a result we obtain the temperature dependence of the splitting in the screening mass of pions and the $η$-meson.

Chiral symmetry breaking in continuum QCD

We present a quantitative analysis of chiral symmetry breaking in two-flavour continuum QCD in the quenched limit. The theory is set-up at perturbative momenta, where asymptotic freedom leads to precise results. The evolution of QCD towards the hadronic phase is achieved by means of dynamical hadronisation in the non-perturbative functional renormalisation group approach. We use a vertex expansion scheme based on gauge-invariant operators and discuss its convergence properties and the remaining systematic errors. In particular we present results for the quark propagator, the full tensor structure and momentum dependence of the quark-gluon vertex, and the four-fermi scatterings.

Exploring the Phase Structure and Thermodynamics of QCD

We put forward a Polyakov-loop extended quark meson model, where matter as well as glue fluctuations are taken into account, cf. [1]. The latter are included via a Polyakov-loop potential. Usually such a glue potential is based on Yang-Mills lattice data only. We show that a parametrisation of unquenching effects as proposed in [2], together with the inclusion of fluctuations via the functional renormalisation group [3,4], accounts for the relevant dynamics. This is demonstrated by a comparison of order parameters and thermodynamic observables to recent lattice results at vanishing chemical potential, where we find very good agreement.

Fluctuations and the axial anomaly with three quark flavors

The role of the axial anomaly in the chiral phase transition at finite temperature and quark chemical potential is investigated within a non-perturbative functional renormalization group approach. The flow equation for the grand potential is solved to leading-order in a derivative expansion of a three flavor quark-meson model truncation. The results are compared with a standard and an extended mean-field analysis, which facilitates the exploration of the influence of bosonic and fermionic fluctuations, respectively, on the phase transition. The influence of U(1)_A-symmetry breaking on the chiral transition, the location of a possible critical endpoint in the phase diagram and the quark mass sensitivity is studied in detail.

Gluonic three-point correlations in pure Landau gauge QCD

We report on the first self-consistent solution of the Dyson-Schwinger equation (DSE) for the three-gluon vertex. Based on earlier results for the propagators which match data from lattice Monte-Carlo simulations, we obtain results for the three-gluon vertex that are in very good agreement with available lattice data likewise. Feeding these results back into the propagator DSEs leads to some changes especially in the gluon propagator. These changes allow us to assess previously used models for the three-gluon vertex and to systematically estimate the influence of neglected two-loop diagrams with four-gluon interactions. In the final step, a full iterative solution to the coupled DSEs of pure Landau gauge QCD without quarks is then obtained for the first time in an extended truncation which now dynamically includes the complete set of three-point vertex functions.

On propagators and vertices of Landau gauge Yang-Mills theory

We calculate the three-point functions of pure Landau gauge QCD and investigate their influence on the propagators. As expected, the ghost-gluon vertex leads only to minor modifications, while the three-gluon vertex has a sizeable impact on the mid-momentum regime of the gluon propagator. We describe an effective model of the three-gluon vertex that includes contributions from the neglected two-loop diagrams and thus allows to obtain propagators in good agreement with lattice results. We also determine the three-gluon vertex from these propagators and find good agreement with lattice results as well. In turn, these results allow us to assess the effect of the missing two-loop diagrams in the gluon propagator equation. Finally, we present the first self-consistent calculation that includes all two-and three-point functions.

Thermodynamics of QCD at vanishing density

We study the phase structure of QCD at finite temperature within a Polyakov-loop enhanced quark-meson model. Such a model describes the chiral as well as the confinement-deconfinement dynamics. In the present investigation, based on the approach and results put forward in [1-4], both, matter as well as glue fluctuations are included. We present results for the order parameters as well as some thermodynamic observables and find very good agreement with recent results from lattice QCD.

Center Phase Transition from Fundamentally Charged Matter Propagators

The center phase transition at non-vanishing temperatures is investigated in Landau gauge Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) and scalar QCD. For each theory novel order parameters for the transition are introduced. The matter-gluon vertex which occurs in the Dyson-Schwinger equations of the propagators has to be modeled in contemporary studies. It is found that the nature of the phase transition depends strongly on the detailed structure of this vertex. Our investigation motivates a precise determination of the matter-gluon vertex at non-vanishing temperatures.

Optimizing the pulse shape for Schwinger pair production

Recent studies of the dynamically assisted Schwinger effect have shown that particle production is significantly enhanced by a proper choice of the electric field. We demonstrate that optimal control theory provides a systematic means of modifying the pulse shape in order to maximize the particle yield. We employ the quantum kinetic framework and derive the relevant optimal control equations. By means of simple examples we discuss several important issues of the optimization procedure such as constraints, initial conditions or scaling. By relating our findings to established results we demonstrate that the particle yield is systematically maximized by this procedure.

The effect of an infrared divergent quark-antiquark interaction kernel on other Green functions

The n-point Green functions of Landau gauge QCD are systematically investigated in a Dyson-Schwinger approach assuming a static linearly rising potential between fundamental color charges. Besides quarks also scalar matter in the fundamental representation is considered. Starting from the hypothesis of an 1/k^4 infrared divergent matter-antimatter vertex restrictions on the general color tensor structure of this divergence are derived. Consequences for the other four-point functions of QCD, resp., scalar QCD, are presented. Hereby Casimir scaling is found. It is shown that possible singular contributions to the three-point functions vanish due to cancellations within the color algebra. On the other hand, higher n-point functions inherit the infrared singularity of the matter-antimatter vertex in certain color channels. The presented results show that linear confinement is consistently possible in a Greens function approach, however, at the expense that the decoupling theorem is circumvented by infrared singularities.

Three-flavor chiral phase transition and axial symmetry breaking with the functional renormalization group

The interplay of mesonic fluctuations with an axial $U(1)_A$-symmetry breaking and resulting effects on the location of a possibly existing critical endpoint in the QCD phase diagram are investigated in a framework of the functional renormalization group within a $N_f = 2 + 1$ flavor quark-meson model truncation. The axial $U(1)_A$-symmetry breaking is imposed by a mesonic Kobayashi-Maskawa-'t Hooft determinant. The quark mass sensitivity of the chiral phase transition with and without the $U(1)_A$-symmetry breaking is studied.

A dual order parameter from fundamentally colour charged matter

The center phase transition of QCD and of fundamentally charged scalar QCD at non-vanishing temperature is investigated within a Dyson-Schwinger approach. The temperature dependence of the scalar/quark propagator is studied with generalized boundary conditions. A novel order parameter for the center phase transition is established which still exhibits a considerable dependence on the scalar/quark-gluon vertex.

CrasyDSE: A framework for solving Dyson-Schwinger equations

Dyson-Schwinger equations are important tools for non-perturbative analyses of quantum field theories. For example, they are very useful for investigations in quantum chromodynamics and related theories. However, sometimes progress is impeded by the complexity of the equations. Thus automatizing parts of the calculations will certainly be helpful in future investigations. In this article we present a framework for such an automatization based on a C++ code that can deal with a large number of Green functions. Since also the creation of the expressions for the integrals of the Dyson-Schwinger equations needs to be automatized, we defer this task to a Mathematica notebook. We illustrate the complete workflow with an example from Yang-Mills theory coupled to a fundamental scalar field that has been investigated recently. As a second example we calculate the propagators of pure Yang-Mills theory. Our code can serve as a basis for many further investigations where the equations are too complicated to tackle by hand. It also can easily be combined with DoFun, a program for the derivation of Dyson-Schwinger equations.

QCD Green's Functions and Phases of Strongly-Interacting Matter

After presenting a brief summary of functional approaches to QCD at vanishing temperatures and densities the application of QCD Green's functions at non-vanishing temperature and vanishing density is discussed. It is pointed out in which way the infrared behavior of the gluon propagator reflects the (de-)confinement transition. Numerical results for the quark propagator are given thereby verifying the relation between (de-)confinement and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (restoration). Last but not least some results of Dyson-Schwinger equations for the color-superconducting phase at large densities are shown.
