A subalgebra of the Hardy algebra relevant in control theory and its algebraic-analytic properties

We denote by A_0+AP_+ the Banach algebra of all complex-valued functions f defined in the closed right half plane, such that f is the sum of a holomorphic function vanishing at infinity and a ``causal'' almost periodic function. We give a complete description of the maximum ideal space M(A_0+AP_+) of A_0+AP_+. Using this description, we also establish the following results: (1) The corona theorem for A_0+AP_+. (2) M(A_0+AP_+) is contractible (which implies that A_0+AP_+ is a projective free ring). (3) A_0+AP_+ is not a GCD domain. (4) A_0+AP_+ is not a pre-Bezout domain. (5) A_0+AP_+ is not a coherent ring. The study of the above algebraic-anlaytic properties is motivated by applications in the frequency domain approach to linear control theory, where they play an important role in the stabilization problem.

Boundary Behavior of Subelliptic Parabolic Equations on Time-Dependent Domains

In this paper we study the boundary behavior of solutions of a divergence-form subelliptic heat equation in a time-varying domain Ωin R^{n+1}, structured on a set of vector fields X = (X_1, ... X_m) with smooth coefficients satisfying Hörmander's finite rank condition. Assuming that Ωis an X-NTA domain, we first prove a Dahlberg type estimate comparing the X-caloric measure of Ωand the Green function of the subelliptic heat operator. We then prove a backward Harnack inequality, the doubling property for the X-caloric measure of Ω, the Hölder continuity at the boundary for quotients of solutions of H, and a Fatou theorem.

Reformulation of the extension of the $ν$-metric for $H^{\infty}$

The classical nu-metric introduced by Vinnicombe in robust control theory for rational plants was extended to classes of nonrational transfer functions in Ball and Sasane [Complex Analysis and Operator Theory; 2012]. In Sasane [Mathematics of Control and Related Fields; 2012], an extension of the classical nu-metric was given when the underlying ring of stable transfer functions is the Hardy algebra, H^infty. However, this particular extension to H^infty did not directly fit in the abstract framework given in Ball and Sasane [CAOT 2012]. In this paper we show that the case of H^infty also fits into the general abstract framework in [BS CAOT 2012] and that the nu-metric defined in this setting is identical to the extension of the nu-metric defined in Sasane [MCRF 2012]. This is done by introducing a particular Banach algebra, which is the inductive limit of certain C*-algebras.

The obstacle problem for subelliptic non-divergence form operators on homogeneous groups

The main result established in this paper is the existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to the obstacle problem for a class of subelliptic operators in non-divergence form. The operators considered are structured on a set of smooth vector fields in R^n; X = \{X_0, X_1, ...,X_q\}, q \le n, satisfying Hörmanders finite rank condition. In this setting, X_0 is a lower order term while {X1, ...,X_q} are building blocks of the subelliptic part of the operator. In order to prove this, we establish an embedding theorem under the assumption that the set {X_0, X_1, ...,X_q} generates a homogeneous Lie group. Furthermore, we prove that any strong solution belongs to a suitable class of Hölder continuous functions.

Regularity in the Obstacle Problem for Parabolic Non-divergence Operators of Hörmander type

In this paper we continue the study initiated in [FGN] concerning the obstacle problem for a class of parabolic non-divergence operators structured on a set of vector fields X = {X_1,...,X_q} in R^n with C^1-coefficients satisfying Hörmander's finite rank condition, i.e., the rank of Lie{X_1,...,X_q} equals n at every point in R^n. In [FGN] we proved, under appropriate assumptions on the operator and the obstacle, the existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to a general obstacle problem. The main result of this paper is that we establish further regularity, in the interior as well as at the initial state, of strong solutions. Compared to [FGN] we in this paper assume, in addition, that there exists a homogeneous Lie group G = (R^n, \circ, δ_λ) such that {X_1,...,X_q} are left translation invariant on G and such that {X_1,...,X_q} are δ_λ-homogeneous of degree one.
