Strength of Correlations in a Silver Based Cuprate Analogue

AgF2 has been proposed as a cuprate analogue which requires strong correlation and marked covalence. On the other hand, fluorides are usually quite ionic and 4d transition metals tend to be less correlated than their 3d counterparts, which calls for further scrutiny. We combine valence band photoemission and Auger-Meitner spectroscopy of AgF and AgF2 together with computations in small clusters to estimate values of the Ag 4d Coulomb interaction U 4d and charge-transfer energy. Based on these values, AgF2 can be classified as a charge-transfer correlated insulator according to the Zaanen-Sawatzky-Allen classification scheme. Thus, we confirm that the material is a cuprate analogue from the point of view of correlations, suggesting that it should become a high-temperature superconductor if metallization is achieved by doping. We present also a computation of the Hubbard U in density functional "+U" methods and discuss its relation to the Hubbard U in spectroscopies.

Charge ordering mechanism in silver fluoride AgF2_2

Using Density Functional Theory, competition between Mott-Hubbard and intervalence charge transfer mechanism of electron localization is revealed in AgF2_2, an important silver analogue of oxocuprates. We show that at reduced temperature and electron correlations AgF2_2 becomes metallic and dynamically unstable in respect to CDW phonon modes that promote charge ordering. The CDW instability is closely related to Kohn anomaly and Fermi surface nesting. The long advocated KBrF4_4 type CDW Ag1+/3+^{1+/3+}F2_2 structure and its facile transformation to the ground state Ag2+^{2+}F2_2 phase is explained. Our results point out to intimate interplay between lattice, charge and spin degrees of freedom in seemingly simplistic binary metal fluoride.

Computational study of antiferromagnetic and mixed-valent diamagnetic phase of AgF2: crystal, electronic and phonon structure and p-T phase diagram

Crystal and electronic structure, lattice dynamics and thermodynamic stability of little known mixed valent diamagnetic AgIAgIIIF4 beta form of AgF2 is thoroughly examined for the first time and compared with well known antiferromagnetic AgIIF2 alpha form within the framework of Density Functional Theory based methods, phonon direct method and quasiharmonic approximation. Computed equations of state, bulk moduli, electronic densities of states, electronic and phonon band structures including analysis of optically active modes and p T phase diagram of the alpha/beta system are presented. This study demonstrates that alpha is thermodynamically preferred over beta at all temperatures and pressures of its existance but simultaneously beta is dynamically stable in much broader pressure range. The beta phase is discussed in broader context of isostructural ternary metal fluorides and isolectronic oxides including NaCuO2, the reference compound for existence of CuIII species in high temperature oxocuprate superconductors.

Defect trapping and phase separation in chemically doped bulk AgF2

We report a computational survey of chemical doping of silver(II) fluoride, an oxocuprate analog. We find that the ground-state solutions exhibit strong tendency for localization of defects and for phase separation. The additional electronic states are strongly localized and the resulting doped phases exhibit insulating properties. Our results, together with previous insight from experimental attempts, indicate that chemical doping may not be a feasible way towards high-temperature superconductivity in bulk silver(II) fluoride.

Fluorides of silver under large compression

The silver-fluorine phase diagram has been scrutinized as a function of external pressure using theoretical methods. Our results indicate that two novel stoichiometries containing Ag+ and Ag2+ cations (Ag3F4 and Ag2F3) are thermodynamically stable at ambient and low pressure. Both are computed to be magnetic semiconductors at ambient pressure conditions. For Ag2F5, containing both Ag2+ and Ag3+, we find that strong 1D antiferromagnetic coupling is retained throughout the pressure-induced phase transition sequence up to 65 GPa. Our calculations show that throughout the entire pressure range of their stability the mixed valence fluorides preserve a finite band gap at the Fermi level. We also confirm the possibility of synthesizing AgF4 as a paramagnetic compound at high pressure. Our results indicate that this compound is metallic in its thermodynamic stability region. Finally, we present general considerations on the thermodynamic stability of mixed valence compounds of silver at high pressure.

Lattice dynamics of KAgF3 perovskite, unique 1D antiferromagnet

Theoretical DFT calculations using GGA+U and HSE06 frameworks enabled vibrational mode assignment and partial (atomic) phonon DOS determination in KAgF3 perovskite, a low-dimensional magnetic fluoroargentate(II). Twelve bands in the spectra of KAgF3 were assigned to either IR active or Raman active modes, reaching very good correlation with experimental values (R2>0.997). Low-temperature Raman measurements indicate that the intriguing spin-Peierls-like phase transition at 230 K is an order-disorder transition and it does not strongly impact the vibrational structure of the material.

The ground state and polymorphism of LiSc(BH4)4 finally understood by Density Functional Theory modelling

We report a new metastable gamma polymorph of mixed metal borohydride LiSc(BH4)4. Using Density Functional Theory calculations with dispersion corrections, we prove importance of van der Waals H...H interactions for correct theoretical description of the title compound. We propose the ordered ground state structure (alpha form) and revise the recently reported beta phase, now describing it as a solid solution, LiSc(BH4)4-xClx, x~0.7. The LiSc(BH4)4 polymorphism is rationalized using Zr(BH4)4 type structure with Sc --> Zr and Li in the interstitial face-centered positions.
