Two-Scale Approach to an Asymptotic Solution of Maxwell Equations in Layered Periodic Media

An asymptotic investigation of monochromatic electromagnetic fields in a layered periodic medium is carried out under the assumption that the wave frequency is close to the frequency of a stationary point of the dispersion surface. We find solutions of Maxwell equations by the method of two-scale asymptotic expansions. We establish that the principal order of the expansion of a solution dependent on three spatial coordinates is the sum of two differently polarized Floquet-Bloch solutions, each of which is multiplied by a slowly varying envelope function. We derive that the envelope functions satisfy a system of differential equations with constant coefficients. In new variables, it is reduced to a system of two independent equations, both of them are either hyperbolic or elliptic, depending on the type of the stationary point. The envelope functions are independent only in the planar case. Some consequences are discussed.

On astigmatic solutions of the wave and the Klein-Gordon-Fock equations with exponential fall--off

Highly localized explicit solutions to multidimensional wave and Klein--Gordon--Fock equations are presented. Their Fourier transform is also found explicitly. Solutions depend on a set of parameters, and demonstrate astigmatic properties. Asymptotic analysis for large and moderate time shows that constructed solutions have Gaussian localisation near a point moving with the group speed.

Representations of solutions of the wave equation based on relativistic wavelets

A representation of solutions of the wave equation with two spatial coordinates in terms of localized elementary ones is presented. Elementary solutions are constructed from four solutions with the help of transformations of the affine Poincaré group, i.e., with the help of translations, dilations in space and time and Lorentz transformations. The representation can be interpreted in terms of the initial-boundary value problem for the wave equation in a half-plane. It gives the solution as an integral representation of two types of solutions: propagating localized solutions running away from the boundary under different angles and packet-like surface waves running along the boundary and exponentially decreasing away from the boundary. Properties of elementary solutions are discussed. A numerical investigation of coefficients of the decomposition is carried out. An example of the field created by sources moving along a line with different speeds is considered, and the dependence of coefficients on speeds of sources is discussed.

Plasmons on adiabatically varying surfaces

Surface plasmon polaritons (SSP), moving along a smooth curved interface between two isotropic media with slowly varying dielectric permittivities and magnetic permeabilities and supporting SSP, are studied theoretically. Solutions of Maxwell equations are investigated within a small wavelength limit in the boundary layer of the wavelength order near the surface. An explicit asymptotic formula for an EM wave traveling along geodesics on the surface is obtained. An exponential factor reflects a distinction between the planar and curved cases. A curvature-dependent correction term in the exponent demonstrates a strong dependence on transverse curvature and a weak dependence on longitudinal curvature. The closer the parameters to the resonance case, the more pronounced this tendency. It is found that the attenuation of the SPP in the case of lossy media may be reduced by changing the curvature. If the signs of the magnetic permeability of the medium on both sides of the interface are opposite, the surface magnetic plasmon polariton may propagate. Its short-wavelength asymptotics is found.
