Finite space Kantorovich problem with an MCMC of table moves

In Optimal Transport (OT) on a finite metric space, one defines a distance on the probability simplex that extends the distance on the ground space. The distance is the value of a Linear Programming (LP) problem on the set of non-negative-valued 2-way tables with assigned probability functions as margins. We apply to this case the methodology of moves from Algebraic Statistics (AS) and use it to derive a Monte Carlo Markov Chain (MCMC) solution algorithm.

The gradient flow of the polarization measure. With an appendix

The polarization measure is the probability that among 3 individuals chosen at random from a finite population exactly 2 come from the same class. This index is maximum at the midpoints of the edges of the probability simplex. We compute the gradient flow of this index that is the differential equation whose solutions are the curves of steepest ascent. Tools from Information Geometry are extensively used. In a time series, a comparison of the estimated velocity of variation with the direction of the gradient field should be a better index than the simple variation of the index.

$D$-optimal saturated designs: a simulation study

In this work we focus on saturated $D$-optimal designs. Using recent results, we identify $D$-optimal designs with the solutions of an optimization problem with linear constraints. We introduce new objective functions based on the geometric structure of the design and we compare them with the classical $D$-efficiency criterion. We perform a simulation study. In all the test cases we observe that designs with high values of $D$-efficiency have also high values of the new objective functions.

Saturated fractions of two-factor designs

In this paper we study saturated fractions of a two-factor design under the simple effect model. In particular, we define a criterion to check whether a given fraction is saturated or not, and we compute the number of saturated fractions. All proofs are constructive and can be used as actual methods to build saturated fractions. Moreover, we show how the theory of Markov bases for contingency tables can be applied to two-factor designs for moving between the designs with given margins.
