Rigorous analysis of shape transitions in frustrated elastic ribbons

Ribbons are elastic bodies of thickness $t$ and width $w$ with $t\ll w\ll 1$ (after appropriate nondimensionalization). Many ribbons in nature have a non-trivial internal geometry, making them incompatible with Euclidean space. This incompatibility -- expressed mathematically as a failure of the Gauss-Codazzi equations for surfaces -- can trigger shape transitions between narrow and wide ribbons. These transitions depend on the internal geometry: ribbons whose incompatibility arises from failure of the Gauss equation always exhibit a transition, whereas those whose incompatibility arises from failure of the Codazzi equations, may or may not. We give the first rigorous analysis of this phenomenon, mainly for ribbons whose first fundamental form is flat. For Gauss-incompatible ribbons we identify the natural energy scaling of the problem and prove the existence of a shape transition. For Codazzi-incompatible ribbons we give a necessary condition for a transition to occur. Furthermore, our study reveals a fundamental distinction: the transition is "microscopic" for Gauss-incompatible ribbons, persisting as the width tends to $0$, whereas it is "mesoscopic" for Codazzi-incompatible ribbons, observable only at small but finite width. The results are obtained by calculating the $Γ$-limits, as $t,w\to 0$, for narrow ribbons ($w^2 \ll t$), and wide ribbons (taking $t$ to zero and then $w$), in the natural energy scalings dictated by the internal geometry.

Nonlocal anisotropic interactions of Coulomb type

In this paper we review some recent results on nonlocal interaction problems. The focus is on interaction kernels that are anisotropic variants of the classical Coulomb kernel. In other words, while preserving the same singularity at zero of the Coulomb kernel, they present preferred directions of interaction. For kernels of this kind and general confinement we will prove existence and uniqueness of minimisers of the corresponding energy. In the case of a quadratic confinement we will review a recent result by Carrillo & Shu about the explicit characterisation of minimisers, and present a new proof, which has the advantage of being extendable to higher dimension. In light of this result, we will re-examine some previous works motivated by applications to dislocation theory in materials science. Finally, we will discuss some related results and open questions.

Pressure live loads and the variational derivation of linear elasticity

The rigorous derivation of linear elasticity from finite elasticity by means of Gamma-convergence is a well-known result, which has been extended to different models also beyond the elastic regime. However, in these results the applied forces are usually assumed to be dead loads, that is, their density in the reference configuration is independent of the actual deformation. In this paper we begin a study of the variational derivation of linear elasticity in the presence of live loads. We consider a pure traction problem for a nonlinearly elastic body subject to a pressure live load and we compute its linearization for small pressure by Gamma-convergence. We allow for a weakly coercive elastic energy density and we prove strong convergence of minimizers.

Stability of boundary conditions for the Sadowsky functional

It has been proved by the authors that the (extended) Sadowsky functional can be deduced as the Gamma-limit of the Kirchhoff energy on a rectangular strip of height $\varepsilon$, as $\varepsilon$ tends to 0. In this paper we show that this Gamma-convergence result is stable when affine boundary conditions are prescribed on the short sides of the strip. These boundary conditions include those corresponding to a Möbius band.

A variational model for anisotropic and naturally twisted ribbons

We consider thin plates whose energy density is a quadratic function of the difference between the second fundamental form of the deformed configuration and a "natural" curvature tensor. This tensor either denotes the second fundamental form of the stress-free configuration, if it exists, or a target curvature tensor. In the latter case, residual stress arises from the geometrical frustration involved in the attempt to achieve the target curvature: as a result, the plate is naturally twisted, even in the absence of external forces or prescribed boundary conditions. Here, starting from this kind of plate energies, we derive a new variational one-dimensional model for naturally twisted ribbons by means of Gamma-convergence. Our result generalizes, and corrects, the classical Sadowsky energy to geometrically frustrated anisotropic ribbons with a narrow, possibly curved, reference configuration.

Convergence of interaction-driven evolutions of dislocations with Wasserstein dissipation and slip-plane confinement

We consider systems of $n$ parallel edge dislocations in a single slip system, represented by points in a two-dimensional domain; the elastic medium is modelled as a continuum. We formulate the energy of this system in terms of the empirical measure of the dislocations, and prove several convergence results in the limit $n\to\infty$. The main aim of the paper is to study the convergence of the evolution of the empirical measure as $n\to\infty$. We consider rate-independent, quasi-static evolutions, in which the motion of the dislocations is restricted to the same slip plane. This leads to a formulation of the quasi-static evolution problem in terms of a modified Wasserstein distance, which is only finite when the transport plan is slip-plane-confined. Since the focus is on interaction between dislocations, we renormalize the elastic energy to remove the potentially large self- or core energy. We prove Gamma-convergence of this renormalized energy, and we construct joint recovery sequences for which both the energies and the modified distances converge. With this augmented Gamma-convergence we prove the convergence of the quasi-static evolutions as $n\to\infty$.

Convergence of equilibria of thin elastic rods under physical growth conditions for the energy density

The subject of this paper is the study of the asymptotic behaviour of the equilibrium configurations of a nonlinearly elastic thin rod, as the diameter of the cross-section tends to zero. Convergence results are established assuming physical growth conditions for the elastic energy density and suitable scalings of the applied loads, that correspond at the limit to different rod models: the constrained linear theory, the analogous of von Kármán plate theory for rods, and the linear theory.
