On the rate of generic Gorenstein $K$-algebras

The rate of a standard graded $K$-algebra $A$ is a measure of the growth of the shifts in a minimal free resolution of $K$ as an $A$-module. In particular $A$ has rate one if and only if it is Koszul. It is known that a generic Artinian Gorenstein algebra of embedding dimension $n \geq 3$ and socle degree $s=3$ is Koszul. We prove that a generic Artinian Gorenstein algebra with $n\geq 4$ and $s \ge 3 $ has rate $ \lfloor \frac{s}{2} \rfloor. $ In the process we show that such an algebra is generated in degree $\lfloor \frac{s}{2} \rfloor +1. $ This gives a partial positive answer to a longstanding conjecture stated by the first author on the minimal free resolution of a generic Artinian Gorenstein ring of odd socle degree.

The structure of the Sally module of integrally closed ideals

The first two Hilbert coefficients of a primary ideal play an important role in commutative algebra and in algebraic geometry. In this paper we give a complete algebraic structure of the Sally module of integrally closed ideals $I$ in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring $A$ satisfying the equality $\mathrm{e}_1(I)=\mathrm{e}_0(I)-\ell_A(A/I)+\ell_A(I^2/QI)+1, $ where $Q$ is a minimal reduction of $I$, and $\mathrm{e}_0(I)$ and $\mathrm{e}_1(I)$ denote the first two Hilbert coefficients of $I, $ respectively the multiplicity and the Chern number of $I$. This almost extremal value of $\mathrm{e}_1(I) $ with respect classical inequalities holds a complete description of the homological and the numerical invariants of the associated graded ring. Examples are given.

Poincaré series of modules over compressed Gorenstein local rings

Given positive integers e and s we consider Gorenstein Artinian local rings R of embedding dimension e whose maximal ideal $\mathfrak{m}$ satisfies $\mathfrak{m}^s\ne 0=\mathfrak{m}^{s+1}$. We say that R is a compressed Gorenstein local ring when it has maximal length among such rings. It is known that generic Gorenstein Artinian algebras are compressed. If $s\ne 3$, we prove that the Poincare series of all finitely generated modules over a compressed Gorenstein local ring are rational, sharing a common denominator. A formula for the denominator is given. When s is even this formula depends only on the integers e and s. Note that for $s=3$ examples of compressed Gorenstein local rings with transcendental Poincare series exist, due to Bøgvad.

The Tangent Cone of a local ring of codimension 2

Let $(S, \mathfrak n) $ be a regular local ring and let $I \subseteq \mathfrak n^2 $ be a perfect ideal of $S. $ Sharp upper bounds on the minimal number of generators of $I$ are known in terms of the Hilbert function of $R=S/I. $ Starting from information on the ideal $I, $ for instance the minimal number of generators, a difficult task is to find good bounds on the minimal number of generators of the leading ideal $I^* $, which defines the tangent cone of $R$ or to give information on its graded structure. Motivated by papers of S.C. Kothari, S. Goto ${\it{et al.}}$ concerning the leading ideal of a complete intersection $I=(f,g) $ in a regular local ring, we present results provided ht$(I)=2.$ If $I$ is a complete intersection, we prove that the Hilbert function of $R$ determines the graded Betti numbers of the leading ideal and, as a consequence, we recover most of the results of the previously quoted papers. The description is more complicated if $ν(I) >2$ and a careful investigation can be provided when $ν(I)=3. $ Several examples illustrating our results are given.

Regularity and linearity defect of modules over local rings

Given a finitely generated module $M$ over a commutative local ring (or a standard graded $k$-algebra) $(R,\m,k) $ we detect its complexity in terms of numerical invariants coming from suitable $\m$-stable filtrations $\mathbb{M}$ on $M$. We study the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $gr_{\mathbb{M}}(M) $ and the linearity defect of $M,$ denoted $\ld_R(M),$ through a deep investigation based on the theory of standard bases. If $M$ is a graded $R$-module, then $\reg_R(gr_{\mathbb{M}}(M)) <\infty$ implies $\reg_R(M)<\infty$ and the converse holds provided $M$ is of homogenous type. An analogous result can be proved in the local case in terms of the linearity defect. Motivated by a positive answer in the graded case, we present for local rings a partial answer to a question raised by Herzog and Iyengar of whether $\ld_R(k)<\infty$ implies $R$ is Koszul.

Poincaré series and deformations of Gorenstein local algebras with low socle degree

Let $K$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$, and let $A$ be an Artinian Gorenstein local commutative and Noetherian $K$--algebra, with maximal ideal $M$. In the present paper we prove a structure theorem describing such kind of $K$--algebras satisfying $M^4=0$. We use this result in order to prove that such a $K$--algebra $A$ has rational Poincaré series and it is always smoothable in any embedding dimension, if $\dim_K M^2/M^3 \le 4$. We also prove that the generic Artinian Gorenstein local $K$--algebra with socle degree three has rational Poincaré series, in spite of the fact that such algebras are not necessarily smoothable.
