Comparison of decay of solutions to two compressible approximations to Navier-Stokes equations

In this article, we use the decay character of initial data to compare the energy decay rates of solutions to different compressible approximations to the Navier-Stokes equations. We show that the system having a nonlinear damping term has slower decay than its counterpart with an advection-like term. Moreover, we characterize a set of initial data for which the decay of the first system is driven by the difference between the full solution and the solution to the linear part, while for the second system the linear part provides the decay rate.

Long time behavior for a dissipative shallow water model

We consider the two-dimensional shallow water model derived by Levermore and Sammartino (Nonlinearity 14,2001), describing the motion of an incompressible fluid, confined in a shallow basin, with varying bottom topography. We construct the approximate inertial manifolds for the associated dynamical system and estimate its order. Finally, considering the whole domain R^2 and under suitable conditions on the time dependent forcing term, we prove the L^2 asymptotic decay of the weak solutions.

Decay characterization of solutions to dissipative equations

We address the study of decay rates of solutions to dissipative equations. The characterization of these rates is given for a wide class of linear systems by the {\em decay character}, which is a number associated to the initial datum that describes the behavior of the datum near the origin in frequency space. We then use the decay character and the Fourier Splitting method to obtain upper and lower bounds for decay of solutions to appropriate dissipative nonlinear equations, both in the incompressible and compressible case.

Asymptotic Behavior of Solutions to the Liquid Crystal System in $H^m(\mathbb{R}^3)$

In this paper we study the large time behavior of regular solutions to a nematic liquid crystal system in Sobolev spaces $H^m(\R^3)$ for $m\geq 0$.We obtain optimal decay rates in $H^m(R^3)$ spaces, in the sense that the rates coincide with the rates of the underlying linear counterpart. The fluid under consideration has constant density and small initial data.

Classical Solutions for a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation arising in Computational Neuroscience

In this paper we analyze the global existence of classical solutions to the initial boundary-value problem for a nonlinear parabolic equation describing the collective behavior of an ensemble of neurons. These equations were obtained as a diffusive approximation of the mean-field limit of a stochastic differential equation system. The resulting Fokker-Planck equation presents a nonlinearity in the coefficients depending on the probability flux through the boundary. We show by an appropriate change of variables that this parabolic equation with nonlinear boundary conditions can be transformed into a non standard Stefan-like free boundary problem with a source term given by a delta function. We prove that there are global classical solutions for inhibitory neural networks, while for excitatory networks we give local well-posedness of classical solutions together with a blow up criterium. Finally, we will also study the spectrum for the linear problem corresponding to uncoupled networks and its relation to Poincaré inequalities for studying their asymptotic behavior.

Decay rates for a class of diffusive-dominated interaction equations

We analyse qualitative properties of the solutions to a mean-field equation for particles interacting through a pairwise potential while diffusing by Brownian motion. Interaction and diffusion compete with each other depending on the character of the potential. We provide sufficient conditions on the relation between the interaction potential and the initial data for diffusion to be the dominant term. We give decay rates of Sobolev norms showing that asymptotically for large times the behavior is then given by the heat equation. Moreover, we show an optimal rate of convergence in the $L^1$-norm towards the fundamental solution of the heat equation.

Norm inflation for incompressible magneto-hydrodynamic system in $\dot{B}_{\infty}^{-1,\infty}$

We demonstrate that the solutions to the Cauchy problem for the three dimensional incompressible magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) system can develop diferent types of norm inflations in $\dot{B}_{\infty}^{-1, \infty}$. Particularly the magnetic field can develop norm inflation in short time even when the velocity remains small and vice verse. Efforts are made to present a very expository development of the inginious construction of Bourgain and Pavlović for Navier-Stokes equations.
