A Steklov version of the Torsional Rigidity

Motivated by the connection between the first eigenvalue of the Dirichlet-Laplacian and the torsional rigidity, the aim of this paper is to find a physically coherent and mathematically interesting new concept for boundary torsional rigidity, closely related to the Steklov eigenvalue. From a variational point of view, such a new object corresponds to the sharp constant for the trace embedding of $W^{1,2}(Ω)$ into $L^1(\partialΩ)$. We obtain various equivalent variational formulations, present some properties of the state function and obtain some sharp geometric estimates, both for planar simply connected sets and for convex sets in any dimension.

Bulk-Boundary eigenvalues for Bilaplacian problems

We initiate the study of a bulk-boundary eigenvalue problem for the Bilaplacian with a particular third order boundary condition that arises from the study of dynamical boundary conditions for the Cahn-Hilliard equation. First we consider continuity properties under parameter variation (in which the parameter also affects the domain of definition of the operator). Then we look at the ball and the annulus geometries (together with the punctured ball), obtaining the eigenvalues as solutions of a precise equation involving special functions. An interesting outcome of our analysis in the annulus case is the presence of a bifurcation from the zero eigenvalue depending on the size of the annulus.

ODE-methods in non-local equations

Non-local equations cannot be treated using classical ODE theorems. Nevertheless, several new methods have been introduced in the non-local gluing scheme of our previous article "On higher dimensional singularities for the fractional Yamabe problem: a non-local Mazzeo-Pacard program"; we survey and improve those, and present new applications as well. First, from the explicit symbol of the conformal fractional Laplacian, a variation of constants formula is obtained for fractional Hardy operators. We thus develop, in addition to a suitable extension in the spirit of Caffarelli--Silvestre, an equivalent formulation as an infinite system of second order constant coefficient ODEs. Classical ODE quantities like the Hamiltonian and Wrońskian may then be utilized. As applications, we obtain a Frobenius theorem and establish new Poho\vzaev identities. We also give a detailed proof for the non-degeneracy of the fast-decay singular solution of the fractional Lane-Emden equation.

Optimal configuration and symmetry breaking phenomena in the composite membrane problem with fractional Laplacian

We consider the following eigenvalue optimization in the composite membrane problem with fractional Laplacian: given a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, $α>0$ and $0<A<|Ω|$, find a subset $D\subset Ω$ of area $A$ such that the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of the operator $(-Δ)^s+αχ_D$ is as small as possible. The solution $D$ is called as an optimal configuration for the data $(Ω,α,A)$. Looking at the well-known extension definition for the fractional Laplacian, in the case $s=1/2$ this is essentially the composite membrane problem for which the mass is concentrated at the boundary as one is trying to maximize the Steklov eigenvalue. We prove existence of solutions and study properties of optimal configuration $D$. This is a free boundary problem which could be formulated as a two-sided unstable obstacle problem. Moreover, we show that for some rotationally symmetric domains (thin annuli), the optimal configuration is not rotational symmetric, which implies the non-uniqueness of the optimal configuration $D$. On the other hand, we prove that for a convex domain $Ω$ having reflection symmetries, the optimal configuration possesses the same symmetries, which implies uniqueness of the optimal configuration $D$ in the ball case.

$Γ$-convergence of variational functionals with boundary terms in Stein manifolds

Let $Ω$ be an open subset of a Stein manifold $Σ$ and let $M$ be its boundary. It is well known that $M$ inherits a natural contact structure. In this paper we consider a family of variational functionals $F_\varepsilon$ defined by the sum of two terms: a Dirichlet-type energy associated with a sub-Riemannian structure in $Ω$ and a potential term on the boundary $M$. We prove that the functionals $F_\varepsilon$ $Γ$-converge to the intrinsic perimeter in $M$ associated with its contact structure. Similar results have been obtained in the Euclidean space by Alberti, Bouchitté, Seppecher. We stress that already in the Euclidean setting the situation is not covered by the classical Modica-Mortola Theorem because of the presence of the boundary term. We recall also that Modica-Mortola type results (without a boundary term) have been proved in the Euclidean space for sub-Riemannian energies by Monti and Serra Cassano.

Fractional powers of the wave operator via Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps in anti-de Sitter spaces

We show that the fractional wave operator, which is usually studied in the context of hypersingular integrals but had not yet appeared in mathematical physics, can be constructed as the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map associated with the Klein-Gordon equation in anti-de Sitter spacetimes. Several generalizations of this relation will be discussed too.

Isolated singularities for a semilinear equation for the fractional Laplacian arising in conformal geometry

We introduce the study of isolated singularities for a semilinear equation involving the fractional Laplacian. In conformal geometry, it is equivalent to the study of singular metrics with constant fractional curvature. Our main ideas are: first, to set the problem into a natural geometric framework, and second, to perform some kind of phase portrait study for this non-local ODE.

Instability and bifurcation in a trend depending price formation model

A well-known model due to J.-M. Lasry and P.L. Lions that presents the evolution of prices in a market as the evolution of a free boundary in a diffusion equation is suggested to be modified in order to show instabilities for some values of the parameters. This loss of stability is associated to the appearance of new types of solutions, namely periodic solutions, due to a Hopf bifurcation and representing price oscillations, and traveling waves, that represent either inflationary or deflationary behavior.

Layer solutions for the fractional Laplacian on hyperbolic space: existence, uniqueness and qualitative properties

We investigate the equation $$(-Δ_{\mathbb H^n})^γ w=f(w)\quad in \mathbb H^{n},$$ where $(-Δ_{\mathbb H^n})^γ$ corresponds to the fractional Laplacian on hyperbolic space for $γ\in (0,1)$ and $f$ is a smooth nonlinearity that typically comes from a double well potential. We prove the existence of heteroclinic connections in the following sense; a so-called layer solution is a smooth solution of the previous equation converging to $\pm 1$ at any point of the two hemispheres $S_\pm \subset \partial_\infty \mathbb H^n$ and which is strictly increasing with respect to the signed distance to a totally geodesic hyperplane $Π.$ We prove that under additional conditions on the nonlinearity uniqueness holds up to isometry. Then we provide several symmetry results and qualitative properties of the layer solutions. Finally, we consider the multilayer case, at least when $γ$ is close to one.
