Group testing via residuation and partial geometries

The motivation for this paper comes from the ongoing SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic. Its goal is to present a previously neglected approach to non-adaptive group testing and describes it in terms of residuated pairs on partially ordered sets. Our investigation has the advantage, as it naturally yields an efficient decision scheme (decoder) for any given testing scheme. This decoder allows to detect a large amount of infection patterns. Apart from this, we devise a construction of good group testing schemes that are based on incidence matrices of finite partial linear spaces. The key idea is to exploit the structure of these matrices and make them available as test matrices for group testing. These matrices may generally be tailored for different estimated disease prevalence levels. As an example, we discuss the group testing schemes based on generalized quadrangles. In the context at hand, we state our results only for the error-free case so far. An extension to a noisy scenario is desirable and will be treated in a subsequent account on the topic.

List Decoding of Quaternary Codes in the Lee Metric

We present a list decoding algorithm for quaternary negacyclic codes over the Lee metric. To achieve this result, we use a Sudan-Guruswami type list decoding algorithm for Reed-Solomon codes over certain ring alphabets. Our decoding strategy for negacyclic codes over the ring $\mathbb Z_4$ combines the list decoding algorithm by Wu with the Gröbner basis approach for solving a key equation due to Byrne and Fitzpatrick.

On Decoding of Generalized Concatenated Codes and Matrix-Product Codes

Generalized concatenated codes were introduced in the 1970s by Zinoviev. There are many types of codes in the literature that are known by other names that can be viewed as generalized concatenated codes. Examples include matrix-product codes, multilevel codes and generalized cascade codes. Decoding algorithms for generalized concatenated codes were developed during the 1970s and 1980s. However, their use does not appear to be as widespread as it should, especially for codes that are known by other names but can be viewed as generalized concatenated codes. In this paper we review the decoding algorithms for concatenated codes, generalized concatenated codes and matrix-product codes, and clarify the connection between matrix-product codes and generalized concatenated codes. We present a small improvement to the decoding algorithm for concatenated codes. We also extend the decoding algorithms from errors-only decoders to error-and-erasure decoders. Furthermore, we improve the upper bound on the computational complexity of the decoding algorithm in the case of matrix-product codes where the generator matrix for the inner code is non-singular by columns.

The Extension Theorem for Bi-invariant Weights over Frobenius Rings and Frobenius Bimodules

We give a sufficient condition for a bi-invariant weight on a Frobenius bimodule to satisfy the extension property. This condition applies to bi-invariant weights on a finite Frobenius ring as a special case. The complex-valued functions on a Frobenius bimodule are viewed as a module over the semigroup ring of the multiplicative semigroup of the coefficient ring.

Mosaics of Combinatorial Designs

Looking at incidence matrices of $t$-$(v,k,λ)$ designs as $v \times b$ matrices with $2$ possible entries, each of which indicates incidences of a $t$-design, we introduce the notion of a $c$-mosaic of designs, having the same number of points and blocks, as a matrix with $c$ different entries, such that each entry defines incidences of a design. In fact, a $v \times b$ matrix is decomposed in $c$ incidence matrices of designs, each denoted by a different colour, hence this decomposition might be seen as a tiling of a matrix with incidence matrices of designs as well. These mosaics have applications in experiment design when considering a simultaneous run of several different experiments. We have constructed infinite series of examples of mosaics and state some probably non-trivial open problems. Furthermore we extend our definition to the case of $q$-analogues of designs in a meaningful way.

New Results on the Pseudoredundancy

The concepts of pseudocodeword and pseudoweight play a fundamental role in the finite-length analysis of LDPC codes. The pseudoredundancy of a binary linear code is defined as the minimum number of rows in a parity-check matrix such that the corresponding minimum pseudoweight equals its minimum Hamming distance. By using the value assignment of Chen and Kløve we present new results on the pseudocodeword redundancy of binary linear codes. In particular, we give several upper bounds on the pseudoredundancies of certain codes with repeated and added coordinates and of certain shortened subcodes. We also investigate several kinds of k-dimensional binary codes and compute their exact pseudocodeword redundancy.

MacWilliams' Extension Theorem for Bi-Invariant Weights over Finite Principal Ideal Rings

A finite ring R and a weight w on R satisfy the Extension Property if every R-linear w-isometry between two R-linear codes in R^n extends to a monomial transformation of R^n that preserves w. MacWilliams proved that finite fields with the Hamming weight satisfy the Extension Property. It is known that finite Frobenius rings with either the Hamming weight or the homogeneous weight satisfy the Extension Property. Conversely, if a finite ring with the Hamming or homogeneous weight satisfies the Extension Property, then the ring is Frobenius. This paper addresses the question of a characterization of all bi-invariant weights on a finite ring that satisfy the Extension Property. Having solved this question in previous papers for all direct products of finite chain rings and for matrix rings, we have now arrived at a characterization of these weights for finite principal ideal rings, which form a large subclass of the finite Frobenius rings. We do not assume commutativity of the rings in question.

On the algebraic representation of selected optimal non-linear binary codes

Revisiting an approach by Conway and Sloane we investigate a collection of optimal non-linear binary codes and represent them as (non-linear) codes over Z4. The Fourier transform will be used in order to analyze these codes, which leads to a new algebraic representation involving subgroups of the group of units in a certain ring. One of our results is a new representation of Best's (10, 40, 4) code as a coset of a subgroup in the group of invertible elements of the group ring Z4[Z5]. This yields a particularly simple algebraic decoding algorithm for this code. The technique at hand is further applied to analyze Julin's (12, 144, 4) code and the (12, 24, 12) Hadamard code. It can also be used in order to construct a (non-optimal) binary (14, 56, 6) code.

Algebraic Decoding of Negacyclic Codes Over Z_4

In this article we investigate Berlekamp's negacyclic codes and discover that these codes, when considered over the integers modulo 4, do not suffer any of the restrictions on the minimum distance observed in Berlekamp's original papers. The codes considered here have minimim Lee distance at least 2t+1, where the generator polynomial of the code has roots z,z^3,...,z^{2t+1} for a primitive 2nth root of unity z in a Galois extension of Z4. No restriction on t is imposed. We present an algebraic decoding algorithm for this class of codes that corrects any error pattern of Lee weight at most t. Our treatment uses Grobner bases and the decoding complexity is quadratic in t.

Characteristics of Invariant Weights Related to Code Equivalence over Rings

The Equivalence Theorem states that, for a given weight on the alphabet, every linear isometry between linear codes extends to a monomial transformation of the entire space. This theorem has been proved for several weights and alphabets, including the original MacWilliams' Equivalence Theorem for the Hamming weight on codes over finite fields. The question remains: What conditions must a weight satisfy so that the Extension Theorem will hold? In this paper we provide an algebraic framework for determining such conditions, generalising the approach taken in [Greferath, Honold '06].

Linear-Programming Decoding of Nonbinary Linear Codes

A framework for linear-programming (LP) decoding of nonbinary linear codes over rings is developed. This framework facilitates linear-programming based reception for coded modulation systems which use direct modulation mapping of coded symbols. It is proved that the resulting LP decoder has the 'maximum-likelihood certificate' property. It is also shown that the decoder output is the lowest cost pseudocodeword. Equivalence between pseudocodewords of the linear program and pseudocodewords of graph covers is proved. It is also proved that if the modulator-channel combination satisfies a particular symmetry condition, the codeword error rate performance is independent of the transmitted codeword. Two alternative polytopes for use with linear-programming decoding are studied, and it is shown that for many classes of codes these polytopes yield a complexity advantage for decoding. These polytope representations lead to polynomial-time decoders for a wide variety of classical nonbinary linear codes. LP decoding performance is illustrated for the [11,6] ternary Golay code with ternary PSK modulation over AWGN, and in this case it is shown that the performance of the LP decoder is comparable to codeword-error-rate-optimum hard-decision based decoding. LP decoding is also simulated for medium-length ternary and quaternary LDPC codes with corresponding PSK modulations over AWGN.

Polytope Representations for Linear-Programming Decoding of Non-Binary Linear Codes

In previous work, we demonstrated how decoding of a non-binary linear code could be formulated as a linear-programming problem. In this paper, we study different polytopes for use with linear-programming decoding, and show that for many classes of codes these polytopes yield a complexity advantage for decoding. These representations lead to polynomial-time decoders for a wide variety of classical non-binary linear codes.
