Hubble tension as a guide for refining the early Universe: Cosmologies with explicit local Lorentz and diffeomorphism violation

This paper is dedicated to assessing modified cosmological settings based on the gravitational Standard-Model Extension (SME). Our analysis rests upon the Hubble tension (HT), which is a discrepancy between the observational determination of the Hubble parameter via data from the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and Type Ia supernovae, respectively. While the latter approach is model-independent, the former highly depends on the model used to describe the physics of the early Universe. Motivated by the HT, we take into account two recently introduced cosmological models as test frameworks of the pre-CMB era. These settings involve local Lorentz and diffeomorphism violation parameterized by nondynamical SME background fields $s_{00}$ and $s^{ij}$, respectively. We aim at explaining the tension in the measured results of the cosmic expansion rate in early and late epochs by resorting to these two modified cosmologies as potential descriptions of the pre-CMB era. As long as the HT does not turn out to be a merely systematic effect, it can serve as a criterion for exploring regions of the parameter space in certain pre-CMB new-physics candidates such as SME cosmologies. By setting extracted limits on SME coefficients into perspective with already existing bounds in the literature, we infer that none of the aforementioned models are suitable pre-CMB candidates for fixing the HT. In this way, new physics arising from the particular realizations of Lorentz and diffeomorphism violation studied in this paper does not explain the HT. Our paper exemplifies how to exploit this discrepancy as a novel possibility of refining our description of the early Universe.

Cosmology in the presence of diffeomorphism-violating, nondynamical background fields

We consider diffeomorphism violation, which is parameterized by nondynamical background fields of the gravitational Standard-Model Extension (SME), and study its effects on the time evolution of the Universe. Our goal is to identify background field configurations that imply stages of accelerated expansion without exotic forms of matter and radiation present. Although our approach gives rise to a set of restrictive conditions, configurations are encountered that exhibit this property or show other interesting behaviors. The findings of our article, which is among the first to apply the SME to a cosmological setting, provide an initial understanding of how to technically incorporate background fields into the cosmological evolution equations and what their phenomenological impact may be.

Modified-gravity theories with nondynamical background fields

We study the dynamics of a modified-gravity theory, which is supplemented by an extended Gibbons-Hawking-York boundary term and incorporates diffeomorphism violation through nondynamical background fields denoted as $u$ and $s^{μν}$ in the literature. An ADM decomposition allows us to project the modified Einstein equations into purely spacelike hypersurfaces, which implies the field equations for the induced dynamical three-metric. We also obtain the Hamilton-Jacobi equations of motion for the canonical variables of the theory based on its Hamiltonian, which was derived in a previous work. The computations show that the dynamical field equations obtained from the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian approaches are consistent with each other. Connections to Brans-Dicke theory and ghost-free massive gravity are established.

Effects of CPT-odd terms of dimensions three and five on electromagnetic propagation in continuous matter

In this work we study how CPT-odd Maxwell-Carroll-Field-Jackiw (MCFJ) electrodynamics as well as a dimension-5 extension of it affect the optical activity of continuous media. The starting point is dimension-3 MCFJ electrodynamics in matter whose modified Maxwell equations, permittivity tensor, and dispersion relations are recapitulated. Corresponding refractive indices are achieved in terms of the frequency and the vector-valued background field. For a purely timelike background, the refractive indices are real. Their associated propagation modes are circularly polarized and exhibit birefringence. For a purely spacelike background, one refractive index is always real and the other can be complex. The circularly polarized propagating modes may exhibit birefringence and dichroism (associated with absorption). Subsequently, we examine a dimension-five MCFJ-type electrodynamics, previously scrutinized in the literature, in a continuous medium. Following the same procedure, we find the refractive indices from a sixth-order dispersion equation. For a purely timelike background, three distinct refractive indices are obtained, one of them being real and two being complex. They are associated with two circularly polarized propagating modes that exhibit birefringence or dichroism, depending on the frequency range. Scenarios of propagation and absorption analogous to those found in dispersive dielectrics are also observed for spacelike background configurations. We conclude by comparing the dimension-three and five results and by emphasizing the richer phenomenology of the propagating modes in the higher-derivative model. Our results are applicable in the realm of Weyl semimetals.

Hamiltonian formulation of an effective modified gravity with nondynamical background fields

The current paper is dedicated to developing a (3+1) decomposition for the minimal gravitational Standard-Model Extension. Our setting is explicit diffeomorphism violation and we focus on the background fields known in the literature as $u$ and $s^{μν}$. The Hamiltonian formalism is developed for these contributions, which amounts to deriving modified Hamiltonian and momentum constraints. We then study the connection between these modified constraints and the modified Einstein equations. Implications are drawn on the form of the background fields to guarantee the internal consistency of the corresponding modified-gravity theories. In the course of our analysis, we obtain a set of consistency requirements for $u$ and certain sectors of $s^{μν}$. We argue that the constraint structure remains untouched when these conditions are satisfied. Our results shed light on explicit violations of diffeomorphism invariance and local Lorentz invariance in gravity. They may turn out to be valuable for developing a better understanding of effective modified-gravity theories.

Lorentz violation in Dirac and Weyl semimetals

We propose a correspondence between the description of emergent Lorentz symmetry in condensed-matter systems and the established general effective field theory for Lorentz violation in fundamental theories of spacetime and matter. This correspondence has potential implications in both directions. We illustrate the proposal by investigating its consequences for the spectral and transport properties of Dirac and Weyl semimetals. Particular realizations of this framework give rise to Dirac nodal spectra with nodal lines and rings. We demonstrate a bulk-boundary correspondence between bulk topological invariants and drumhead surface states of these Dirac nodal semimetals. We calculate their transport coefficients in leading-order perturbation theory, thereby characterizing the unconventional electromagnetic response due to small deviations from emergent Lorentz invariance. Some prospective future applications of the correspondence are outlined.

Causality, unitarity, and indefinite metric in Maxwell-Chern-Simons extensions

We canonically quantize $(2+1)$-dimensional electrodynamics including a higher-derivative Chern-Simons term. The effective theory describes a standard photon and an additional degree of freedom associated with a massive ghost. We find the Hamiltonian and the algebra satisfied by the field operators. The theory is characterized by an indefinite metric in the Hilbert space that brings up questions on causality and unitarity. We study both of the latter fundamental properties and show that microcausality as well as perturbative unitarity up to one-loop order are conserved when the Lee-Wick prescription is employed.

Unitarity in Maxwell-Carroll-Field-Jackiw electrodynamics

In this work we focus on the Carroll-Field-Jackiw (CFJ) modified electrodynamics in combination with a CPT-even Lorentz-violating contribution. We add a photon mass term to the Lagrange density and study the question whether this contribution can render the theory unitary. The analysis is based on the pole structure of the modified photon propagator as well as the validity of the optical theorem. We find, indeed, that the massive CFJ-type modification is unitary at tree-level. This result provides a further example for how a photon mass can mitigate malign behaviors.

From classical Lagrangians to Hamilton operators in the Standard-Model Extension

In this article we investigate whether a theory based on a classical Lagrangian for the minimal Standard-Model Extension (SME) can be quantized such that the result is equal to the corresponding low-energy Hamilton operator obtained from the field-theory description. This analysis is carried out for the whole collection of minimal Lagrangians found in the literature. The upshot is that first quantization can be performed consistently. The unexpected observation is made that at first order in Lorentz violation and at second order in the velocity the Lagrangians are related to the Hamilton functions by a simple transformation. Under mild assumptions, it is shown that this holds universally. This result is used successfully to obtain classical Lagrangians for two complicated sectors of the minimal SME that have not been considered in the literature so far. Therefore, it will not be an obstacle anymore to derive such Lagrangians even for involved sets of coefficients - at least to the level of approximation stated above.

Analysis of the consistency of parity-odd nonbirefringent modified Maxwell theory

There exist two deformations of standard electrodynamics that describe Lorentz symmetry violation in the photon sector: CPT-odd Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory and CPT-even modified Maxwell theory. In this article, we focus on the parity-odd nonbirefringent sector of modified Maxwell theory. It is coupled to a standard Dirac theory of massive spin-1/2 fermions resulting in a modified quantum electrodynamics (QED). This theory is discussed with respect to properties such as microcausality and unitarity, where it turns out that these hold. Furthermore, a priori, the limit of the theory for vanishing Lorentz-violating parameters seems to be discontinuous. Since it is not clear, whether this is a gauge artifact, the cross section for a physical process - modified Compton scattering - is calculated numerically. Despite the numerical instabilities occurring for scattering of unpolarized electrons off polarized photons in the second physical polarization state, it is shown that for Lorentz-violating parameters much smaller than 1 the modified theory approaches standard QED, which is strengthened by analytical investigations. Hence, the theory proves to be consistent, at least with regard to the investigations performed. This leads to the interesting result of having a well-defined parity-odd extension of QED.

Multiple Lorentz groups - a toy model for superluminal muon neutrinos

In this article an idea is presented, which allows for the explanation of superluminal muon neutrinos. It is based on the introduction of a new superluminal, massless gauge boson coupling to the neutrino only, but not to other standard model particles. The model is discussed with regard to the Supernova 1987 (SN 1987) velocity bound on electron antineutrinos and the Cohen-Glashow constraint on superluminal neutrino propagation. The latter can be circumvented if - within the framework of the model - a sterile neutrino mixing with the active neutrino mass eigenstates is introduced. The suggestion of a sterile neutrino accounting for superluminal neutrinos has already been proposed in several papers. It is possible to choose mixing angles with the sterile neutrino sector such that the model respects both the SN 1987 bound and the muon neutrino travels superluminally.
