On Quantifying Large Lattice Relaxations in Photovoltaic Devices

Temporal variations of Cu(In,Ga)Se$_2$ photovoltaic device properties during light exposure at various temperatures and voltage biases for times up to 100 h were analyzed using the kinetic theory of large lattice relaxations. Open-circuit voltage and p-type doping increased with charge injection and decreased with temperature at low injection conditions. Lattice relaxation can account for both trends and activation energies extracted from the data were approximately 0.9 and 1.2 eV for devices with lower and higher sodium content, respectively. In these devices, increased sodium content resulted in higher initial p-type doping with greater stability. First principles calculations providing revised activation energies for the ($V_{Se}-V_{Cu}$) complex suggest that this defect does not account for the metastability observed here.

All-Back-Schottky-Contact Thin-Film Photovoltaics

The concept of All-Back-Schottky-Contact (ABSC) thin-film photovoltaic devices is introduced and evaluated using 2D numerical simulation. The built-in field is generated by reach-through Schottky junctions with two metals of different work functions in an alternating, side-by-side pattern along the back of the device. This approach minimizes the number of interfaces through which charge transport is required while eliminating the need for transparent conductive front contacts, pn junctions, and scribing. Performance metrics are calculated for a range of design parameters and it is shown that passivation of the front surface and back contacts is critical to achieve efficiencies near 20% using only one layer of material deposited on the back contacts. This design paradigm may afford a wide range of passivation materials since both electrical conduction and optical transparency would not be required of any one passivation layer.

Nucleation of plasmonic resonance nanoparticles

We predict the electromagnetic field driven nucleation of nanoparticles that provide plasmonic oscillations in resonance with the field frequency. The oscillations assume a phase that maximizes the particle polarization and energy gain due to nucleation. We derive closed form expressions for the corresponding nucleation barrier and particle shape vs. field frequency and strength, metal plasma frequency, conductivity, and the host dielectric permittivity. We show that the plasmonic polarization allows for nucleation of particles that would not be stable in zero field.
