Continuous Family of Conformal Field Theories and Exactly Marginal Operators

Does a conformal manifold imply the existence of exactly marginal operators? We answer this question affirmatively under the assumption that there exists a conformal interface with certain properties connecting nearby CFTs. We show that the exactly marginal operator that connects the CFTs can be reconstructed from the interface displacement operator. Our construction is model-independent and based on the general principles of conformal symmetry.

The extraordinary boundary transition in the 3d O(N) model via conformal bootstrap

This paper studies the critical behavior of the 3d classical $\mathrm{O}(N)$ model with a boundary. Recently, one of us established that upon treating $N$ as a continuous variable, there exists a critical value $N_c > 2$ such that for $2 \leq N < N_c$ the model exhibits a new extraordinary-log boundary universality class, if the symmetry preserving interactions on the boundary are enhanced. $N_c$ is determined by a ratio of universal amplitudes in the normal universality class, where instead a symmetry breaking field is applied on the boundary. We study the normal universality class using the numerical conformal bootstrap. We find truncated solutions to the crossing equation that indicate $N_c \approx 5$. Additionally, we use semi-definite programming to place rigorous bounds on the boundary CFT data of interest to conclude that $N_c > 3$, under a certain positivity assumption which we check in various perturbative limits.

Colliders and conformal interfaces

We set up a scattering experiment of matter against an impurity which separates two generic one-dimensional critical quantum systems. We compute the flux of reflected and transmitted energy, thus defining a precise measure of the transparency of the interface between the related two-dimensional conformal field theories. If the largest symmetry algebra is Virasoro, we find that the reflection and transmission coefficients are independent of the details of the initial state, and are fixed in terms of the central charges and of the two-point function of the displacement operator. The situation is more elaborate when extended symmetries are present. Positivity of the total energy flux at infinity imposes bounds on the coefficient of the two-point function of the displacement operator, which controls the free-energy cost of a small deformation of the interface. Finally, we study out-of-equilibrium steady states of a critical system connecting two reservoirs at different temperatures. In the absence of extended symmetries, our result implies that the energy flux across an impurity is proportional to the difference of the squared temperatures and controlled by the reflection coefficient.

Defects in conformal field theory

We discuss consequences of the breaking of conformal symmetry by a flat or spherical extended operator. We adapt the embedding formalism to the study of correlation functions of symmetric traceless tensors in the presence of the defect. Two-point functions of a bulk and a defect primary are fixed by conformal invariance up to a set of OPE coefficients, and we identify the allowed tensor structures. A correlator of two bulk primaries depends on two cross-ratios, and we study its conformal block decomposition in the case of external scalars. The Casimir equation in the defect channel reduces to a hypergeometric equation, while the bulk channel blocks are recursively determined in the light-cone limit. In the special case of a defect of codimension two, we map the Casimir equation in the bulk channel to the one of a four-point function without defect. Finally, we analyze the contact terms of the stress-tensor with the extended operator, and we deduce constraints on the CFT data. In two dimensions, we relate the displacement operator, which appears among the contact terms, to the reflection coefficient of a conformal interface, and we find unitarity bounds for the latter.

Effective string description of confining flux tubes

We review the current knowledge about the theoretical foundations of the effective string theory for confining flux tubes and the comparison of the predictions to pure gauge lattice data. A concise presentation of the effective string theory is provided, incorporating recent developments. We summarize the predictions for the spectrum and the profile/width of the flux tube and their comparison to lattice data. The review closes with a short summary of open questions for future research.

Rényi entropy and conformal defects

We propose a field theoretic framework for calculating the dependence of Rényi entropies on the shape of the entangling surface in a conformal field theory. Our approach rests on regarding the corresponding twist operator as a conformal defect and in particular, we define the displacement operator which implements small local deformations of the entangling surface. We identify a simple constraint between the coefficient defining the two-point function of the displacement operator and the conformal weight of the twist operator, which consolidates a number of distinct conjectures on the shape dependence of the Rényi entropy. As an example, using this approach, we examine a conjecture regarding the universal coefficient associated with a conical singularity in the entangling surface for CFTs in any number of spacetime dimensions. We also provide a general formula for the second order variation of the Rényi entropy arising from small deformations of a spherical entangling surface, extending Mezei's results for the entanglement entropy.

Recent progress in the effective string theory description of LGTs

In presence of a static pair of sources, the spectrum of low-lying states of any confining gauge theory in D space-time dimensions is described, at large source separations, by an effective string theory. Recently two important advances improved our understanding of this effective theory. First, it was realized that the form of the effective action is strongly constrained by the requirement of the Lorentz invariance of the gauge theory, which is spontaneously broken by the formation of a long confining flux tube in the vacuum. This constraint is strong enough to fix uniquely the first few subleading terms of the action. Second, it has been realized that the first of these allowed terms - a quartic polynomial in the field derivatives - is exactly the composite field $T\bar{T}$, built with the chiral components, $T$ and $\bar{T}$, of the energy-momentum tensor of the 2d QFT describing the infrared limit of the effective string. This irrelevant perturbation is quantum integrable and yields, through the thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA), the energy levels of the string which exactly coincide with the Nambu-Goto spectrum. In this talk we first review the general implications of these two results and then, as a test of the power of these methods, use them to construct the first few boundary corrections to the effective string action.

Lorentz completion of effective string (and p-brane) action

The formation of a confining string (or a p-brane) in a Poincare' invariant theory breaks spontaneously this symmetry which is thereby realized non-linearly in the effective action of these extended objects. As a consequence the form of the action is strongly constrained. A new general method is described to obtain in a systematic way higher order Lorentz invariant contributions to this action. We find a simple recipe to promote a term invariant under the stability subgroup to an expression invariant under the whole Lorentz group. It is based on the following three steps: in the saturation of worldsheet (or worldvolume) indices replace the Minkowski metric with the inverse of the induced metric; in the saturation of indices of the transverse coordinates describing the position of the extended object replace the Euclidean metric with a certain new metric; finally replace the field derivatives of order higher than two with a certain covariant derivative. Lorentz invariance of the expression modified this way immediately follows. We find in particular that the leading bulk deviation of the Nambu Goto action in any space-time dimensions is proportional to the square of scalar curvature.
