Dimensional Uplift in Conformal Field Theories

The n-point functions of any Conformal Field Theory (CFT) in $d$ dimensions can always be interpreted as spatial restrictions of corresponding functions in a higher-dimensional CFT with dimension $d'> d$. In particular, when a four-point function in $d$ dimensions has a known conformal block expansion, this expansion can be easily extended to $d'=d+2$ due to a remarkable identity among conformal blocks, discovered by Kaviraj, Rychkov, and Trevisani (KRT) as a consequence of Parisi-Sourlas supersymmetry and confirmed to hold in any CFT with $d > 1$. In this note, we provide an elementary proof of this identity using simple algebraic properties of the Casimir operators. Additionally, we construct five differential operators, $Λ_i$, which promote a conformal block in $d$ dimensions to five conformal blocks in $d+2$ dimensions. These operators can be normalized such that $\sum_i Λ_i = 1$, from which the KRT identity immediately follows. Similar, simpler identities have been proposed, all of which can be reformulated in the same way.

Modular Bootstrap, Elliptic Points, and Quantum Gravity

The modular bootstrap program for 2d CFTs could be seen as a systematic exploration of the physical consequences of consistency conditions at the elliptic points and at the cusp of their toruspartition function. The study at $τ=i$, the elliptic point stabilized by the modular inversion $S$, was initiated by Hellerman, who found a general upper bound for the most relevant scaling dimension $Δ$. Likewise, analyticity at $τ=i\infty$, the cusp stabilized by the modular translation $T$, yields an upper bound on the twist gap. Here we study consistency conditions at $τ=\exp[2iπ/3]$, the elliptic point stabilized by $S T$. We find a much stronger upper bound in the large-c limit, namely $Δ<\frac{c-1}{12}+0.092$, which is very close to the minimal mass threshold of the BTZ black holes in the gravity dual of $AdS_3/CFT_2$ correspondence.

Truncatable bootstrap equations in algebraic form and critical surface exponents

We describe examples of drastic truncations of conformal bootstrap equations encoding much more information than that obtained by a direct numerical approach. A three-term truncation of the four point function of a free scalar in any space dimensions provides algebraic identities among conformal block derivatives which generate the exact spectrum of the infinitely many primary operators contributing to it. In boundary conformal field theories, we point out that the appearance of free parameters in the solutions of bootstrap equations is not an artifact of truncations, rather it reflects a physical property of permeable conformal interfaces which are described by the same equations. Surface transitions correspond to isolated points in the parameter space. We are able to locate them in the case of 3d Ising model, thanks to a useful algebraic form of 3d boundary bootstrap equations. It turns out that the low-lying spectra of the surface operators in the ordinary and the special transitions of 3d Ising model form two different solutions of the same polynomial equation. Their interplay yields an estimate of the surface renormalization group exponent, $y_{h}=0.72558(18)$ for the ordinary universality class and $y_{h}=1.646(2)$ for the special universality class, which compare well with the most recent Monte Carlo calculations. Estimates of other surface exponents as well as OPE coefficients are also obtained.

Critical exponents of the 3d Ising and related models from Conformal Bootstrap

The constraints of conformal bootstrap are applied to investigate a set of conformal field theories in various dimensions. The prescriptions can be applied to both unitary and non unitary theories allowing for the study of the spectrum of low-lying primary operators of the theory. We evaluate the lowest scaling dimensions of the local operators associated with the Yang-Lee edge singularity for $2 \le D \le 6$. Likewise we obtain the scaling dimensions of six scalars and four spinning operators for the 3d critical Ising model. Our findings are in agreement with existing results to a per mill precision and estimate several new exponents.

Recent progress in the effective string theory description of LGTs

In presence of a static pair of sources, the spectrum of low-lying states of any confining gauge theory in D space-time dimensions is described, at large source separations, by an effective string theory. Recently two important advances improved our understanding of this effective theory. First, it was realized that the form of the effective action is strongly constrained by the requirement of the Lorentz invariance of the gauge theory, which is spontaneously broken by the formation of a long confining flux tube in the vacuum. This constraint is strong enough to fix uniquely the first few subleading terms of the action. Second, it has been realized that the first of these allowed terms - a quartic polynomial in the field derivatives - is exactly the composite field $T\bar{T}$, built with the chiral components, $T$ and $\bar{T}$, of the energy-momentum tensor of the 2d QFT describing the infrared limit of the effective string. This irrelevant perturbation is quantum integrable and yields, through the thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA), the energy levels of the string which exactly coincide with the Nambu-Goto spectrum. In this talk we first review the general implications of these two results and then, as a test of the power of these methods, use them to construct the first few boundary corrections to the effective string action.

Lorentz completion of effective string (and p-brane) action

The formation of a confining string (or a p-brane) in a Poincare' invariant theory breaks spontaneously this symmetry which is thereby realized non-linearly in the effective action of these extended objects. As a consequence the form of the action is strongly constrained. A new general method is described to obtain in a systematic way higher order Lorentz invariant contributions to this action. We find a simple recipe to promote a term invariant under the stability subgroup to an expression invariant under the whole Lorentz group. It is based on the following three steps: in the saturation of worldsheet (or worldvolume) indices replace the Minkowski metric with the inverse of the induced metric; in the saturation of indices of the transverse coordinates describing the position of the extended object replace the Euclidean metric with a certain new metric; finally replace the field derivatives of order higher than two with a certain covariant derivative. Lorentz invariance of the expression modified this way immediately follows. We find in particular that the leading bulk deviation of the Nambu Goto action in any space-time dimensions is proportional to the square of scalar curvature.

More constraining conformal bootstrap

Recently an efficient numerical method has been developed to implement the constraints of crossing symmetry and unitarity on the operator dimensions and OPE coefficients of conformal field theories (CFT) in diverse space-time dimensions. It appears that the calculations can be done only for theories lying at the boundary of the allowed parameter space. Here it is pointed out that a similar method can be applied to a larger class of CFT's, whether unitary or not, and no free parameter remains, provided we know the fusion algebra of the low lying primary operators. As an example we calculate using first principles, with no phenomenological input, the lowest scaling dimensions of the local operators associated with the Yang-Lee edge singularity in three and four space dimensions. The edge exponents compare favorably with the latest numerical estimates. A consistency check of this approach on the 3d critical Ising model is also made.

Quantisation of the effective string with TBA

In presence of a static pair of sources, the spectrum of low-lying states of whatever confining gauge theory in D space-time dimensions is described, at large source separations, by an effective string theory. In the far infrared the latter flows, in the static gauge, to a two-dimensional massless free-field theory. It is known that the Lorentz invariance of the gauge theory fixes uniquely the first few subleading corrections of this free-field limit. We point out that the first allowed correction - a quartic polynomial in the field derivatives - is exactly the composite field $T\bar{T}$, built with the chiral components, $T$ and $\bar{T}$, of the energy-momentum tensor. This irrelevant perturbation is quantum integrable and yields, through the thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA),the energy levels of the string which exactly coincide with the Nambu-Goto spectrum. We obtain this way the results recently found by Dubovsky, Flauger and Gorbenko. This procedure easily generalizes to any two-dimensional CFT. It is known that the leading deviation of the Nambu-Goto spectrum comes from the boundary terms of the string action. We solve the TBA equations on an infinite strip, identify the relevant boundary parameter and verify that it modifies the string spectrum as expected.

Thermodynamics of SU(N) Yang-Mills theories in 2+1 dimensions II - The deconfined phase

We present a non-perturbative study of the equation of state in the deconfined phase of Yang-Mills theories in D=2+1 dimensions. We introduce a holographic model, based on the improved holographic QCD model, from which we derive a non-trivial relation between the order of the deconfinement phase transition and the behavior of the trace of the energy-momentum tensor as a function of the temperature T. We compare the theoretical predictions of this holographic model with a new set of high-precision numerical results from lattice simulations of SU(N) theories with N=2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 colors. The latter reveal that, similarly to the D=3+1 case, the bulk equilibrium thermodynamic quantities (pressure, trace of the energy-momentum tensor, energy density and entropy density) exhibit nearly perfect proportionality to the number of gluons, and can be successfully compared with the holographic predictions in a broad range of temperatures. Finally, we also show that, again similarly to the D=3+1 case, the trace of the energy-momentum tensor appears to be proportional to T^2 in a wide temperature range, starting from approximately 1.2 T_c, where T_c denotes the critical deconfinement temperature.

Thermodynamics of SU(N) Yang-Mills theories in 2+1 dimensions I - The confining phase

We compute the equation of state in the confining phase of SU(N) Yang-Mills theories with N=2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 colors in 2+1 dimensions, via lattice simulations. At low enough temperatures, the results are accurately described by a gas of glueballs, including all known states below the two-particle threshold. Close to the deconfinement temperature, however, this prediction underestimates the numerical results, and the contribution from heavier glueballs has to be included. We show that the spectral density of the latter can be accurately described using a simple bosonic string model.

2D quantum gravity from quantum entanglement

In quantum systems with many degrees of freedom the replica method is a useful tool to study the entanglement of arbitrary spatial regions. We apply it in a way which allows them to back-react. As a consequence, they become dynamical subsystems whose position, form and extension is determined by their interaction with the whole system. We analyze in particular quantum spin chains described at criticality by a conformal field theory (CFT). Its coupling to the Gibbs' ensemble of all possible subsystems is relevant and drives the system into a new fixed point which is argued to be that of the 2D quantum gravity coupled to this system. Numerical experiments on the critical Ising model show that the new critical exponents agree with those predicted by the formula of Knizhnik, Polyakov and Zamolodchikov.

Thermodynamics of SU(N) gauge theories in 2+1 dimensions in the $T <\ T_c$ regime

We present Monte Carlo results for the thermodynamics of pure SU(N) gauge theories with $N=2,...,6$ in 2+1 dimensions. We focus on the confined phase region $T<T_c$ and study thermodynamics variables such as the trace of the energy-momentum tensor, pressure, energy and entropy density using the integral method. We also investigate scaling properties with $N$ of the different observables. We compare our results with a gas of free glueballs and the bosonic string predictions for the Hagedorn spectrum.

The conformal anomaly of k-strings

Simple scaling properties of correlation functions of a confining gauge theory in d-dimensions lead to the conclusion that k-string dynamics is described, in the infrared limit, by a two-dimensional conformal field theory with conformal anomaly c=(d-2)T_k/T_1, where T_k is the k-string tension. This result applies to any gauge theory with stable k-strings. We check it in a 3D Z_4 gauge model at finite temperature, where a string effect directly related to c can be clearly identified.

Critical exponents for higher-representation sources in 3D SU(3) gauge theory from CFT

We establish an exact mapping between the multiplication table of the irreducible representations of SU(3) and the fusion algebra of the two-dimensional conformal field theory in the same universality class of 3D SU(3) gauge theory at the deconfining point. In this way the Svetitsky-Yaffe conjecture on the critical behaviour of Polyakov lines in the fundamental representation naturally extends to whatever representation one considers. As a consequence, the critical exponents of the correlators of these Polyakov lines are determined. Monte Carlo simulations with sources in the symmetric two-index representation, combined with finite-size scaling analysis, compare very favourably with these predictions.

preprint2006arXiv

Quantum broadening of k-strings in gauge theories

We study the thickness of the confining flux tube generated by a pair of sources in higher representations of the gauge group. Using a simple geometric picture we argue that the area of the cross-section of the flux tube, as measured by a Wilson loop probe, grows logarithmically with source separation, as a consequence of the quantum fluctuations of the underlying k-string. The slope of the logarithm turns out to be universal, i.e. it is the same for all the representations and all the gauge theories. We check these predictions in a 3D Z_4 lattice gauge model by comparing the broadening of the 1-string and the 2-string.
