We show that the complex-hyperbolic Einstein Dehn filling compactification cannot possibly be performed in dimension four.
We study relative symplectic cobordisms between contact submanifolds, and in particular relative symplectic cobordisms to the empty set, that we call hats. While we make some observations in higher dimensions, we focus on the case of transverse knots in the standard 3-sphere, and hats in blow-ups of the (punctured) complex projective planes. We apply the construction to give constraints on the algebraic topology of fillings of double covers of the 3-sphere branched over certain transverse quasipositive knots.
We produce a rational homology 3-sphere that does not smoothly bound either a positive or negative definite 4-manifold. Such a 3-manifold necessarily cannot be rational homology cobordant to a Seifert fibered space or any 3-manifold obtained by Dehn surgery on a knot. The proof requires an analysis of short characteristic covectors in bimodular lattices.
We prove that if a contact 3-manifold admits an open book decomposition of genus 0, a certain intersection pattern cannot appear in the homology of any of its minimal symplectic fillings, and moreover, fillings cannot contain symplectic surfaces of positive genus. Applying these obstructions to canonical contact structures on links of normal surface singularities, we show that links of isolated singularities of surfaces in the complex 3-space are planar only in the case of $A_n$-singularities. In general, we characterize completely planar links of normal surface singularities (in terms of their resolution graphs); these singularities are precisely rational singularities with reduced fundamental cycle (also known as minimal singularities). We also establish non-planarity of tight contact structures on certain small Seifert fibered L-spaces and of contact structures arising from the Boothby--Wang construction applied to surfaces of positive genus. Additionally, we prove that every finitely presented group is the fundamental group of a Lefschetz fibration with planar fibers.
We classify which positive integral surgeries on positive torus knots bound rational homology balls. Additionally, for a given knot K we consider which cables K(p,q) admit integral surgeries that bound rational homology balls. For such cables, let S(K) be the set of corresponding rational numbers q/p. We show that S(K) is bounded for each K. Moreover, if n-surgery on K bounds a rational homology ball then n is an accumulation point for S(K).
We classify rational cuspidal curves of degrees 6 and 7 in the complex projective plane, up to symplectic isotopy. The proof uses topological tools, pseudoholomorphic techniques, and birational transformations.
By considering negative surgeries on a knot $K$ in $S^3$, we derive a lower bound to the non-orientable slice genus $γ_4(K)$ in terms of the signature $σ(K)$ and the concordance invariants $V_i(\overline{K})$, which strengthens a previous bound given by Batson, and which coincides with Ozsváth-Stipsicz-Szabó's bound in terms of their $\upsilon$ invariant for L-space knots and quasi-alternating knots. A curious feature of our bound is superadditivity, implying, for instance, that the bound on the stable non-orientable genus is sometimes better than the one on $γ_4(K)$.
We use Heegaard Floer homology with twisted coefficients to define numerical invariants for arbitrary closed 3-manifolds equipped torsion spin$^c$ structures, generalising the correction terms (or $d$--invariants) defined by Ozsváth and Szabó for integer homology 3-spheres and, more generally, for 3-manifolds with standard ${\rm HF}^\infty$. Our twisted correction terms share many properties with their untwisted analogues. In particular, they provide restrictions on the topology of 4-manifolds bounding a given 3-manifold.
We prove the equivalence of the invariants EH(L) and LOSS-(L) for oriented Legendrian knots L in the 3-sphere equipped with the standard contact structure, partially extending a previous result by Stipsicz and Vertesi. In the course of the proof we relate the sutured Floer homology groups associated with a knot complement and knot Floer homology, and define intermediate Legendrian invariants.
We give new tightness criteria for positive surgeries along knots in the 3-sphere, generalising results of Lisca and Stipsicz, and Sahamie. The main tools will be Honda, Kazez and Matic's, Ozsvath and Szabo's Floer-theoretic contact invariants. We compute the Ozsvath and Szabo's invariant of positive contact surgeries along Legendrian knots in the 3-sphere in terms of the classical invariants of the knot. We also combine a Legendrian cabling construction with contact surgeries to get results about rational contact surgeries.
