Evolving black hole with scalar field accretion

We obtain approximate analytical solutions of the Einstein equations close to the trapping horizon for a dynamical spherically symmetric black hole in the presence of a minimally coupled self-interacting scalar field. This is made possible by a new parametrization of the metric, in which the displacement from the horizon as well as its expansion rate feature explicitly. Our results are valid in a neighbourhood of the horizon and hold for any scalar field potential and spacetime asymptotics. An exact equation for the accretion rate is also obtained, which generalizes the standard Bondi formula. We also develop a dynamical system approach to study near-equilibrium black holes; using this formalism, we focus on a simple model to show that the near-equilibrium dynamics is characterised by scaling relations among dynamical variables. Moreover, we show that solutions with purely ingoing energy-momentum flux never reach equilibrium.

Interacting dark sector from the trace-free Einstein equations: cosmological perturbations with no instability

In trace-free Einstein gravity, the stress-energy tensor of matter is not necessarily conserved and so the theory offers a natural framework for interacting dark energy models where dark energy has a constant equation of state $w=-1$. We derive the equations of motion for linear cosmological perturbations in interacting dark energy models of this class, focusing on the scalar sector. Then, we consider a specific model where the energy-momentum transfer potential is proportional to the energy density of cold dark matter; this transfer potential has the effect of inducing an effective equation of state $w_{\rm eff}\neq0$ for cold dark matter. We analyze in detail the evolution of perturbations during radiation domination on super-Hubble scales, finding that the well-known large-scale instability that affects a large class of interacting dark energy models is absent in this model. To avoid a gradient instability, energy must flow from dark matter to dark energy. Finally, we show that interacting dark energy models with $w=-1$ are equivalent to a class of generalized dark matter models.

The singularity in mimetic Kantowski-Sachs cosmology

The dynamics of the vacuum Kantowski-Sachs space-time are studied in the so-called limiting curvature mimetic gravity theory. It is shown that in this theory the vacuum Kantowski-Sachs space-time is always singular. While the departures from general relativity due to the limiting curvature mimetic theory do provide an upper bound on the magnitude of the expansion scalar, both its rate of oscillations and the magnitude of the directional Hubble rates increase without bound and cause curvature invariants to diverge. Also, since the radial scale factor does not vanish in finite (past) time, in this particular theory the Kantowski-Sachs space-time cannot be matched to a null black hole event horizon and, therefore, does not correspond to the interior of a static and spherically symmetric black hole.

Accelerated expansion of the Universe without an inflaton and resolution of the initial singularity from Group Field Theory condensates

We study the expansion of the Universe using an effective Friedmann equation obtained from the dynamics of GFT (Group Field Theory) isotropic condensates. The evolution equations are classical, with quantum correction terms to the Friedmann equation given in the form of effective fluids coupled to the emergent classical background. The occurrence of a bounce, which resolves the initial spacetime singularity, is shown to be a general property of the model. A promising feature of this model is the occurrence of an era of accelerated expansion, without the need to introduce an inflaton field with an appropriately chosen potential. We discuss possible viability issues of this scenario as an alternative to inflation.

Cosmological implications of interacting Group Field Theory models: cyclic Universe and accelerated expansion

We study the cosmological implications of interactions between spacetime quanta in the Group Field Theory (GFT) approach to Quantum Gravity from a phenomenological perspective. Our work represents a first step towards understanding Early Universe Cosmology by studying the dynamics of the emergent continuum spacetime, as obtained from a fundamentally discrete microscopic theory. In particular, we show how GFT interactions lead to a recollapse of the Universe while preserving the bounce replacing the initial singularity, which has already been shown to occur in the free case. It is remarkable that cyclic cosmologies are thus obtained in this framework without any a priori assumption on the geometry of spatial sections of the emergent spacetime. Furthermore, we show how interactions make it possible to have an early epoch of accelerated expansion, which can be made to last for an arbitrarily large number of e-folds, without the need to introduce an ad hoc potential for the scalar field.

Effective cosmological constant induced by stochastic fluctuations of Newton's constant

We consider implications of the microscopic dynamics of spacetime for the evolution of cosmological models. We argue that quantum geometry effects may lead to stochastic fluctuations of the gravitational constant, which is thus considered as a macroscopic effective dynamical quantity. Consistency with Riemannian geometry entails the presence of a time-dependent dark energy term in the modified field equations, which can be expressed in terms of the dynamical gravitational constant. We suggest that the late-time accelerated expansion of the Universe may be ascribed to quantum fluctuations in the geometry of spacetime rather than the vacuum energy from the matter sector.

Semiclassical solutions of generalized Wheeler-DeWitt cosmology

We consider an extension of WDW minisuperpace cosmology with additional interaction terms that preserve the linear structure of the theory. General perturbative methods are developed and applied to known semiclassical solutions for a closed Universe filled with a massless scalar. The exact Feynman propagator of the free theory is derived by means of a conformal transformation in minisuperspace. As an example, a stochastic interaction term is considered and first order perturbative corrections are computed. It is argued that such an interaction can be used to describe the interaction of the cosmological background with the microscopic d.o.f. of the gravitational field. A Helmoltz-like equation is considered for the case of interactions that do not depend on the internal time and the corresponding Green's kernel is obtained exactly. The possibility of linking this approach to fundamental theories of Quantum Gravity is investigated.

Size of the Gribov region in curved spacetime

Recent work in the literature has argued that the joint effect of spacetime curvature and the Gribov ambiguity may introduce further modifications to the Green functions in the infrared. This paper focuses on a simple criterion for studying the effect of spacetime curvature on the size of the Gribov region, improving the accuracy of the previous analysis. It is shown that, depending on the sign of the scalar and Riemann curvature, the Gribov horizon moves inward or, instead, outward with respect to the case of flat spacetime. This is made clear by two novel inequalities here derived for the first time.

The Gribov phenomenon in flat and curved spaces

The quantization of Yang-Mills theories relies on the gauge-fixing procedure. However, in the non-Abelian case this procedure leads to the well known Gribov ambiguity. In order to solve the ambiguity a modification of the functional integral formula must be introduced. As a consequence of this, the Green functions get deep modifications in the infrared. We consider in particular the SU (N) case and show that in the pure gauge case the ghost propagator is enhanced, while the gluon propagator is suppressed in this limit, therefore the study of the Gribov ambiguity may shed some light on the mass gap problem and on colour confinement. We discuss some recent developments on the subject in the case of a curved background. We argue that the concurrent presence of a spacetime curvature and the Gribov ambiguity may introduce further modifications to the Green functions in the infrared.
