A congruence subgroup property for symmetric mapping class groups

We prove the congruence subgroup property for the centralizer of a finite subgroup $G$ in the mapping class group of a hyperbolic oriented and connected surface of finite topological type $S$ such that the genus of the quotient surface $S/G$ is at most $2$. As an application, we show that torsion elements in the mapping class group of a surface of genus $\leq 2$ are conjugacy distinguished.

Automorphisms of the procongruence pants complex

We show that every automorphism of the congruence completion of the extended mapping class group that preserves the set of conjugacy classes of procyclic groups generated by Dehn twists is inner, and that its automorphism group is naturally isomorphic to the automorphism group of the procongruence pants complex. In the genus-zero case, we prove the stronger result that all automorphisms of the profinite completion of the extended mapping class group are inner.

Curves with prescribed symmetry and associated representations of mapping class groups

Let C be a complex smooth projective algebraic curve endowed with an action of a finite group G such that the quotient curve has genus at least 3. We prove that if the G-curve C is very general for these properties, then the natural map from the group algebra QG to the algebra of Q-endomorphisms of its Jacobian is an isomorphism. We use this to obtain (topological) properties regarding certain virtual linear representations of a mapping class group. For example, we show that the connected component of the Zariski closure of such a representation acts Q-irreducibly in a G-isogeny space of H^1(C; Q)and with image often a Q-almost simple group.

Linear representations of hyperelliptic mapping class groups

Let $p:S\to S_g$ be a finite $G$-covering of a closed surface of genus $g\geq 1$ and let $B$ its branch locus. To this data, it is associated a representation of a finite index subgroup of the mapping class group $\operatorname{Mod}(S_g\smallsetminus B)$ in the centralizer of the group $G$ in the symplectic group $\operatorname{Sp}(H_1(S,{\mathbb Q}))$. They are called \emph{virtual linear representations} of the mapping class group and are related, via a conjecture of Putman and Wieland, to a question of Kirby and Ivanov on the abelianization of finite index subgroup of the mapping class group. The purpose of this paper is to study the restriction of such representations to the hyperelliptic mapping class group $\operatorname{Mod}(S_g,B)^ι$, which is a subgroup of $\operatorname{Mod}(S_g\smallsetminus B)$ associated to a given hyperelliptic involution $ι$ on $S_g$. We extend to hyperelliptic mapping class groups some previous results on virtual linear representations of the mapping class group. We then show that, for all $g\geq 2$, there are virtual linear representations of the hyperelliptic mapping class group with nontrivial finite orbits, associated to $G$-coverings of $(S_g,ι)$ ramified over the locus of Weierstrass points.

Galois coverings of moduli spaces of curves and loci of curves with symmetry

Let $\ccM_{g,[n]}$, for $2g-2+n>0$, be the stack of genus $g$, stable algebraic curves, endowed with $n$ unordered marked points. Looijenga introduced the notion of Prym level structures in order to construct smooth projective Galois coverings of the stack $\ccM_{g}$. In §2 of this paper, we introduce the notion of Looijenga level structure which generalizes Looijenga construction and provides a tower of Galois coverings of $\ccM_{g,[n]}$ equivalent to the tower of all geometric level structures over $\ccM_{g,[n]}$. In §3, Looijenga level structures are interpreted geometrically in terms of moduli of curves with symmetry. A byproduct of this characterization is a simple criterion for their smoothness. As a consequence of this criterion, it is shown that Looijenga level structures are smooth under mild hypotheses. The second part of the paper, from §4, deals with the problem of describing the D-M boundary of level structures. In §6, a description is given of the nerve of the D-M boundary of abelian level structures. In §7, it is shown how this construction can be used to "approximate" the nerve of Looijenga level structures. These results are then applied to elaborate a new approach to the congruence subgroup problem for the Teichmüller modular group.

On the procongruence completion of the Teichmüller modular group

For $2g-2+n>0$, the Teichmüller modular group $Γ_{g,n}$ of a compact Riemann surface of genus $g$ with $n$ points removed $S_{g,n}$ is the group of homotopy classes of diffeomorphisms of $S_{g,n}$ which preserve the orientation of $S_{g,n}$ and a given order of its punctures. Let $Π_{g,n}$ be the fundamental group of $S_{g,n}$, with a given base point, and $\hatΠ_{g,n}$ its profinite completion. There is then a natural faithful representation $Γ_{g,n}\hookrightarrow Out(\hatΠ_{g,n})$. The procongruence completion $\checkΓ_{g,n}$ of the Teichmüller group is defined to be the closure of the Teichmüller group $Γ_{g,n}$ inside the profinite group $Out(\hatΠ_{g,n})$. In this paper, we begin a systematic study of the procongruence completion $\checkΓ_{g,n}$. The set of profinite Dehn twists of $\checkΓ_{g,n}$ is the closure, inside this group, of the set of Dehn twists of $\GG_{g,n}$. The main technical result of the paper is a parametrization of the set of profinite Dehn twists of $\checkΓ_{g,n}$ and the subsequent description of their centralizers. This is the basis for the Grothendieck-Teichmüller Lego with procongruence Teichmüller groups as building blocks. As an application, we prove that some Galois representations associated to hyperbolic curves over number fields and their moduli spaces are faithful.

Fundamental groups of moduli stacks of stable curves of compact type

Let $\widetilde{\cal M}_{g,n}$, for $2g-2+n>0$, be the moduli stack of $n$-pointed, genus $g$, stable complex curves of compact type. Various characterizations and properties are obtained of both the algebraic and topological fundamental groups of the stack $\widetilde{\cal M}_{g,n}$. Let $Γ_{g,n}$, for $2g-2+n>0$, be the Teichmüller group associated with a compact Riemann surface of genus $g$ with $n$ points removed $S_{g,n}$, i.e. the group of homotopy classes of diffeomorphisms of $S_{g,n}$ which preserve the orientation of $S_{g,n}$ and a given order of its punctures. Let $K_{g,n}$ be the normal subgroup of $Γ_{g,n}$ generated by Dehn twists along separating circles on $S_{g,n}$. As a first application of the above theory, a characterization of $K_{g,n}$ is given for all $n\geq 0$ (for $n=0,1$, this was done by Johnson). Let then ${\cal T}_{g,n}$ be the Torelli group, i.e. the kernel of the natural representation $Γ_{g,n}\ra Sp_{2g}(Z)$. The abelianization of ${\cal T}_{g,n}$ is determined for all $g\geq 1$ and $n\geq 1$, thus completing classical results by Johnson and Mess.
