Bubbles of nothing in binary black holes and black rings, and viceversa

We argue that expanding bubbles of nothing are a widespread feature of systems of black holes with multiple or non-spherical horizons, appearing as a limit of regions that are narrowly enclosed by the horizons. The bubble is a minimal cycle that links the Einstein-Rosen bridges in the system, and its expansion occurs through the familiar stretching of space in black hole interiors. We demonstrate this idea (which does not involve any Wick rotations) with explicit constructions in four and five dimensions. The geometries of expanding bubbles in these dimensions arise as a limit of, respectively, static black hole binaries and black rings. The limit is such that the separation between the two black holes, or the inner hole of the black ring, becomes very small, and the horizons of the black holes correspond to acceleration horizons of the bubbles. We also explain how a five-dimensional black hole binary gives rise to a different type of expanding bubble. We then show that bubble spacetimes can host black hole binaries and black rings in static equilibrium, with their gravitational attraction being balanced against the background spacetime expansion. Similar constructions are expected in six or more dimensions, but most of these solutions can be obtained only numerically. Finally, we argue that the Nariai solution can be regarded as containing an expanding circular bubble of nothing.

Enhanced Ehlers Transformation and the Majumdar-Papapetrou-NUT Spacetime

The transformation which adds (or removes) NUT charge when it is applied to electrovacuum, axisymmetric and stationary space-times is studied. After analysing the Ehlers and the Reina-Treves transformations we propose a new one, more precise in the presence of the Maxwell electromagnetic field. The enhanced Ehlers transformation proposed turns out to act as a gravitomagnetic duality, analogously to the electromagnetic duality, but for gravity: it rotates the mass charge into the gravomagnetic (or NUT) charge. As an example the Kerr-Newman-NUT black hole is obtained with the help of this enhanced transformation. Moreover a new analytical exact solution is built adding the NUT charge to a double charged black hole, at equilibrium. It describes the non-extremal generalisation of the Majumdar-Papapetrou-NUT solution. From the near-horizon analysis, its microscopic entropy, according to the Kerr/CFT correspondence, is found and the second law of black hole thermodynamics is discussed.

CFT Duals for Accelerating Black Holes

The near horizon geometry of the rotating C-metric, describing accelerating Kerr-Newman black holes, is analysed. It is shown that, at extremality, even though not it is isomorphic to the extremal Kerr-Newman, it remains a warped and twisted product of $AdS_2 \times S^2$. Therefore the methods of the Kerr/CFT correspondence can successfully be applied to build a CFT dual model, whose entropy reproduce, through the Cardy formula, the Beckenstein-Hawking entropy of the accelerating black hole. The mass of accelerating Kerr-Newman black hole, which fulfil the first law of thermodynamics, is presented. Further generalisation in presence of an external Melvin-like magnetic field, used to regularise the conical singularity characteristic of the C-metrics, shows that the Kerr/CFT correspondence can be applied also for the accelerating and magnetised extremal black holes.

Magnetised Kerr/CFT correspondence

The tools of Kerr/CFT correspondence are applied to the Kerr black hole embedded in an axial external magnetic field. Its extremal near horizon geometry remains a warped and twisted product of $AdS_2\times S^2$. The central charge of the Virasoro algebra, generating the asymptotic symmetries of the near horizon geometry, is found. It is used to reproduce, via the Cardy formula, the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the magnetised Kerr black hole as the statistical microscopic entropy of a dual CFT. The presence of the background magnetic field makes available also a second dual CFT picture, based on the $U(1)$ electromagnetic symmetry, instead of the only rotational one of the standard non-magnetised Kerr spacetime. A Meissner-like effect, where at extremality the external magnetic field is expelled out of the black hole, allows us to infer the value of the mass for these magnetised extremal black holes. The generalisation to the CFT dual for the magnetised extreme Kerr-Newman black hole is also presented.

Microscopic Entropy of the Magnetised Extremal Reissner-Nordstrom Black Hole

The extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole embedded in a Melvin-like magnetic universe is studied in the framework of the Kerr/CFT correspondence. The near horizon geometry can be written as a warped and twisted product of $AdS_2 \times S^2$, also in presence of an axial external magnetic field that deforms the black hole. The central charge of the Virasoro algebra can be extracted from the asymptotic symmetries. Using the Cardy formula for the microscopic statistical entropy of the dual two-dimensional CFT, the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, for this charged and magnetised black hole, is reproduced.

Stationary axisymmetric spacetimes with a conformally coupled scalar field

Solution generating techniques for general relativity with a conformally (and minimally) coupled scalar field are pushed forward to build a wide class of asymptotically flat, axisymmetric and stationary spacetimes continuously connected to Kerr. This family contains, amongst other things, rotating extensions of the Bekenstein black hole and also its angular and mass multipolar generalisations. Further addition of NUT charge is also discussed.

Pair Creation of Rotating Black Holes

An exact and regular solution, describing a couple of charged and spinning black holes, is generated in an external electromagnetic field, via Ernst technique, in Einstein-Maxwell gravity. A wormhole instantonic solution interpolating between the two black holes is constructed to discuss, at the semi-classical level, the quantum process of creation rate, in an external magnetic field, of this charged and spinning black hole pair.

C-metric with a conformally coupled scalar field in a magnetic universe

In Einstein-Maxwell gravity with a conformally coupled scalar field, the black hole found by Bocharova, Bronnikov, Melnikov, and Bekenstein breaks when embedded in the external magnetic field of the Melvin universe. The situation improves in presence of acceleration, allowing one to build magnetised and accelerating BBMB black hole with a thin membrane. But to overcome this and others disadvantages of BBMB spacetimes, a new class of black holes, including the rotating case, is proposed for the conformal matter coupling under consideration.

Embedding hairy black holes in a magnetic universe

Ernst's solution generating technique is adapted to Einstein-Maxwell theory conformally (and minimally) coupled to a scalar field. This integrable system enjoys a SU(2,1) symmetry which enables one to move, by Kinnersley transformations, though the axisymmetric and stationary solution space, building an infinite tower of physically inequivalent solutions. As a specific application, metrics associated to scalar hairy black holes, such as the ones discovered by Bocharova, Bronnikov, Melnikov and Bekenstein, are embedded in the external magnetic field of the Melvin universe.

Charging axisymmetric space-times with cosmological constant

Ernst's solution generating technique for adding electromagnetic charge to axisymmetric space-times in general relativity is generalised in presence of the cosmological constant. Ernst equations for complex potentials are found and they are traced back to an affective dual complex dynamical system, whose symmetries are studied. In particular this method is able to generate charged, asymptotically (A)dS black holes from their uncharged version: as an example, it is shown explicitly how to pass from the Kerr-(A)dS to the Kerr-Newman-(A)dS metric. A new solution describing a magnetic universe in presence of the cosmological constant is also generated.

Gribov copies, BRST-exactness and Chern-Simons theory

The path integral approach for a 3D Chern-Simons theory is discussed with a focus on the question of metric independence and BRST-exactness in the light of Gribov ambiguity. Copies of the vacuum satisfying the strong boundary conditions and with trivial winding number are shown to exist. This problem is relevant for Yang-Mills theory in 2+1 dimensions as well. Furthermore, it is also shown that there are regular background metrics supporting an infinite number of zero modes of the Abelian Faddeev-Popov operator in the Coulomb gauge. In order to avoid overcounting one could restrict the possible metrics which enter in the gauge fixing but this would imply that, at a quantum level, three-dimensional Chern-Simons theories do depend on the metric.

Accelerating black hole in 2+1 dimensions and 3+1 black (st)ring

A C-metric type solution for general relativity with cosmological constant is presented in 2+1 dimensions. It is interpreted as a three-dimensional black hole accelerated by a strut. Positive values of the cosmological constant are admissible too. Some embeddings of this metric in the 3+1 space-time are considered: accelerating BTZ black string and a black ring where the gravitational force is sustained by the acceleration.

Duality and Fisher zeros in the 2D Potts model on square lattice

A phenomenological approach to the ferromagnetic two dimensional Potts model on square lattice is proposed. Our goal is to present a simple functional form that obeys the known properties possessed by the free energy of the q-state Potts model. The duality symmetry of the 2D Potts model together with the known results on its critical exponent α allow to fix consistently the details of the proposed expression for the free energy. The agreement of the analytic ansatz with numerical data in the q=3 case is very good at high and low temperatures as well as at the critical point. It is shown that the q>4 cases naturally fit into the same scheme and that one should also expect a good agreement with numerical data. The limiting q=4 case is shortly discussed.

Kauffman Knot Invariant from SO(N) or Sp(N) Chern-Simons theory and the Potts Model

The expectation value of Wilson loop operators in three-dimensional SO(N) Chern-Simons gauge theory gives a known knot invariant: the Kauffman polynomial. Here this result is derived, at the first order, via a simple variational method. With the same procedure the skein relation for Sp(N) are also obtained. Jones polynomial arises as special cases: Sp(2), SO(-2) and SL(2,R). These results are confirmed and extended up to the second order, by means of perturbation theory, which moreover let us establish a duality relation between SO(+/-N) and Sp(-/+N) invariants. A correspondence between the firsts orders in perturbation theory of SO(-2), Sp(2) or SU(2) Chern-Simons quantum holonomies and the partition function of the Q=4 Potts Model is built.
