A black hole solution in conformal supergravity

We present a three-parameter family of analytic black-hole solutions in the bosonic sector of a four-dimensional supersymmetric model with matter fields in the adjoint representation. The solutions are endowed with curvature and torsional singularities which are both surrounded by an event horizon. They are asymptotically Lorentz flat, representing the torsional generalization of the Riegert black hole in conformal gravity. We compute the partition function to first order in the saddle-point approximation which turns out to be finite without any reference to boundary counterterms. We find a non-maximmally symmetric thermalized ground state, whose existence is relevant when studying Hawking-Page phase transitions. Finally, we discuss future directions regarding its extended phase space.

Dynamical dimensional reduction in multi-valued Hamiltonians

Several interesting physical systems, such as the Lovelock extension of General Relativity in higher dimensions, classical time crystals, k-essence fields, Horndeski theories, compressible fluids, and nonlinear electrodynamics, have apparent ill defined sympletic structures, due to the fact that their Hamiltonians are multi-valued functions of the momenta. In this paper, the dynamical evolution generated by such Hamiltonians is described as a degenerate dynamical system, whose sympletic form does not have a constant rank, allowing novel features and interpretations not present in previous investigations. In particular, it is shown how the multi-valuedness is associated with a dynamical mechanism of dimensional reduction, as some degrees of freedom turn into gauge symmetries when the system degenerates.

Chiral gauge theory and gravity from unconventional supersymmetry

From a gauge $SU(2,2|2)$ model with broken supersymmetry, we construct an action for $SU(2)\times U(1)$ Yang-Mills theory coupled to gravity and matter. The connection components for AdS boosts and special conformal translations are auxiliary fields and their fixing reduces the theory to two distintive sectors: a vector-like gauge theory with general relativity and a chiral gauge theory where gravity drops out. We discuss some of the main classical features of the model such as the predicted tree level gauge couplings, cosmological constant value, mass-like terms and the Einstein equations.

Dynamical Contents of Unconventional Supersymmetry

The Dirac Hamiltonian formalism is applied to a system in $(2+1)$-dimensions consisting of a Dirac field $ψ$ minimally coupled to Chern-Simons $U(1)$ and $SO(2,1)$ connections, $A$ and $ω$, respectively. This theory is connected to a supersymmetric Chern-Simons form in which the gravitino has been projected out (unconventional supersymmetry) and, in the case of a flat background, corresponds to the low energy limit of graphene. The separation between first-class and second-class constraints is performed explicitly, and both the field equations and gauge symmetries of the Lagrangian formalism are fully recovered. The degrees of freedom of the theory in generic sectors shows that the propagating states correspond to fermionic modes in the background determined by the geometry of the graphene sheet and the nondynamical electromagnetic field. This is shown for the following canonical sectors: i) a conformally invariant generic description where the spinor field and the dreibein are locally rescaled; ii) a specific configuration for the Dirac fermion consistent with its spin, where Weyl symmetry is exchanged by time reparametrizations; iii) the vacuum sector $ψ=0$, which is of interest for perturbation theory. For the latter the analysis is adapted to the case of manifolds with boundary, and the corresponding Dirac brackets together with the centrally extended charge algebra are found. Finally, the $SU(2)$ generalization of the gauge group is briefly treated, yielding analogous conclusions for the degrees of freedom.

Quantum dress for a naked singularity

We investigate semiclassical backreaction on a conical naked singularity space-time with a negative cosmological constant in (2+1)-dimensions. In particular, we calculate the renormalized quantum stress-energy tensor for a conformally coupled scalar field on such naked singularity space-time. We then obtain the backreacted metric via the semiclassical Einstein equations. We show that, in the regime where the semiclassical approximation can be trusted, backreaction dresses the naked singularity with an event horizon, thus enforcing cosmic censorship.

Analytic self-gravitating Skyrmions, cosmological bounces and AdS wormholes

We present a self-gravitating, analytic and globally regular Skyrmion solution of the Einstein-Skyrme system with winding number w = 1, in presence of a cosmological constant. The static spacetime metric is the direct product RxS3 and the Skyrmion is the self-gravitating generalization of the static hedgehog solution of Manton and Ruback with unit topological charge. This solution can be promoted to a dynamical one in which the spacetime is a cosmology of the Bianchi type-IX with time-dependent scale and squashing coefficients. Remarkably, the Skyrme equations are still identically satisfied for all values of these parameters. Thus, the complete set of field equations for the Einstein-Skyrme-Lambda system in the topological sector reduces to a pair of coupled, autonomous, nonlinear differential equations for the scale factor and a squashing coefficient. These equations admit analytic bouncing cosmological solutions in which the universe contracts to a minimum non-vanishing size, and then expands. A non-trivial byproduct of this solution is that a minor modification of the construction gives rise to a family of stationary, regular configurations in General Relativity with negative cosmological constant supported by an SU(2) nonlinear sigma model. These solutions represent traversable AdS wormholes with NUT parameter in which the only "exotic matter" required for their construction is a negative cosmological constant.

From Lorentz-Chern-Simons to Massive Gravity in 2+1 Dimensions

We propose a generalization of Chiral Gravity, which follows from considering a Chern-Simons action for the spin connection with anti-symmetric contorsion. The theory corresponds to Topologically Massive Gravity at the chiral point non-minimally coupled to an additional scalar mode that gathers the torsion degree of freedom. In this setup, the effective cosmological constant (the inverse of the curvature radius of maximally symmetric solutions) is either negative or zero, and it enters as an integration constant associated to the value of the contorsion at infinity. We explain how this is not in conflict with the Zamolodchikov's $c$-theorem holding in the dual boundary theory. In fact, we conjecture that the theory formulated about three-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space is dual to a two-dimensional conformal field theory whose right- and left-moving central charges are given by $c_{R}=24k$ and $c_{L}=0$, respectively, being $k$ the level of the Chern-Simons action. We study the classical theory both at the linear and non-linear level. In particular, we show how Chiral Gravity is included as a special sector. In addition, the theory has other sectors, which we explore; we exhibit analytic exact solutions that are not solutions of Topologically Massive Gravity (and, consequently, neither of General Relativity) and still satisfy Brown-Henneaux asymptotically AdS$_{3}$ boundary conditions.

Supersymmetric 3D model for gravity with $SU(2)$ gauge symmetry, mass generation and effective cosmological constant

A Chern--Simons system in $2+1$ dimensions invariant under local Lorentz rotations, $SU(2)$ gauge transformations, and local $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry transformations is proposed. The field content is that of $(2+1)$-gravity plus an $SU(2)$ gauge field, a spin-1/2 fermion charged with respect to $SU(2)$ and a trivial free abelian gauge field. A peculiarity of the model is the absence of gravitini, although it includes gravity and supersymmetry. Likewise, no gauginos are present. All the parameters involved in the system are either protected by gauge invariance or emerge as integration constants. An effective mass and effective cosmological constant emerge by spontaneus breaking of local scaling invariance. The vacuum sector is defined by configurations with locally flat Lorentz and $SU(2)$ connections sporting nontrivial global charges. Three-dimensional Lorentz-flat geometries are spacetimes of locally constant negative --or zero--, Riemann curvature, which include Minkowski space, AdS$_3$, BTZ black holes, and point particles. These solutions admit different numbers of globally defined, covariantly constant spinors and are therefore good candidates for stable ground states. The fermionic sector in this system could describe the dynamics of electrons in graphene in the long wavelength limit near the Dirac points, with the spin degree of freedom of the electrons represented by the $SU(2)$ label. If this is the case, the $SU(2)$ gauge field would produce a spin-spin interaction giving rise to strong correlation of electron pairs.

Black hole solutions in Chern-Simons AdS supergravity

We study charged AdS black hole solutions in five-dimensional Chern-Simons supergravity. The minimal supergroup containing such AdSxU(1) configurations is the superunitary group SU(2,2|N). For this model, we find analytic black hole solutions that asymptote to locally AdS spacetime at the boundary. A solution can carry U(1) charge provided the spacetime torsion is non-vanishing. Thus, we analyze the most general configuration consistent with the local AdS isometries in Riemann-Cartan space. The coupling of torsion in the action resembles that of the universal axion of string theory, and it is ultimately due to this field that the theory acquires propagating degrees of freedom. Through a careful analysis of the canonical structure the local degrees of freedom of the theory are identified in the static symmetric sector of phase space.

Dynamical sectors for a spinning particle in AdS_3

We consider the dynamics of the motion of a particle of mass M and spin J in AdS_3. The study reveals the presence of different dynamical sectors depending on the relative values of M, J and the AdS_3 radius R. For the subcritical M^2 R^2-J^2 >0 and supercritical M^2 R^2-J^2<0 cases, it is seen that the equations of motion give the geodesics of AdS_3. For the critical case M^2R^2=J^2 there exist extra gauge transformations which further reduce the physical degrees of freedom, and the motion corresponds to the geodesics of AdS_2. This result should be useful in the holographic interpretation of the entanglement entropy for 2d conformal field theories with gravitational anomalies.

Exact multi-soliton solutions in the four dimensional Skyrme model

Exact analytic solutions of the Skyrme model defined on a spherically symmetric $R^{(1,1)} \times S^2$ geometry, chosen to mimic finite volume effects, are presented. The static and spherically symmetric configurations have non-trivial winding number and finite soliton mass. These configurations possess an extra topological charge, allowing for a novel BPS bound which can be saturated, unlike what happens in the standard case. Such solutions include exact multi-Skyrmions of arbitrary winding number, composed by interacting elementary Skyrmions. The values of the coupling constants and the compression modulus are found in good agreement with experiments by fitting the masses $M_N$ and $M_Δ$.

Gribov ambiguity and degenerate systems

The relation between Gribov ambiguity and degeneracies in the symplectic structure of physical systems is analyzed. It is shown that, in finite-dimensional systems, the presence of Gribov ambiguities in regular constrained systems (those where the constraints are functionally independent) always leads to a degenerate symplectic structure upon Dirac reduction. The implications for the Gribov-Zwanziger approach to QCD are discussed.

Local supersymmetry without SUSY partners

A gauge theory for a superalgebra that includes an internal gauge (G) and local Lorentz algebras, and that could describe the low energy particle phenomenology is constructed. These two symmetries are connected by fermionic supercharges. The system includes an internal gauge connection 1-form $A$, a spin-1/2 Dirac spinor $ψ$, the Lorentz connection $ω$, and the vielbein $e$. The connection one-form is in the adjoint representation of G, while $ψ$ is in the fundamental. In contrast to standard supergravity, the metric is not a fundamental field and is in the center of the superalgebra: it is not only invariant under the internal gauge group and under Lorentz transformations, but is also invariant under supersymmetry. The features of this theory that mark the difference with standard supersymmetry are: A) The number of fermionic and bosonic states is not necessarily the same; B) There are no superpartners with equal mass, "bosoninos", sleptons and squarks are absent; C) Although this supersymmetry originates in a local gauge theory and gravity is included, there is no gravitino; D) Fermions acquire mass from their coupling to the background or from self-couplings, while bosons remain massless. In odd dimensions, the Chern-Simons form provides an action that is quasi-invariant under the entire superalgebra. In even dimensions, the Yang-Mills form $ < F *F>$ is the only natural option, and the symmetry breaks down to [G x SO(1,D-1)]. In 4D, the construction follows the Townsend - Mac Dowell-Mansouri approach. Due to the absence of osp(4|2)-invariant traces in four dimensions, the resulting Lagrangian is only invariant under [U(1) x SO(3,1)], and includes a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio term. In this case, the Lagrangian depends on a single dimensionful parameter that fixes Newton's constant, the cosmological constant and the NJL coupling.

Cosmology with Scalar-Euler form Coupling

A coupling between the spacetime geometry and a scalar field involving the Euler four-form can have important consequences in General Relativity. The coupling is a four-dimensional version of the Jackiw-Teitelboim action, in which a scalar couples to the Euler two-form in two dimensions. In this case the first order formalism, in which the vierbein (or the metric) and the spin connection (or the afine connection) are varied independently, is not equivalent to the second order one, in which the geometry is completely determined by the metric. This is because the torsion postulate (T=0) is not valid and one cannot algebraically solve the spin connection from its own field equation. The direct consequence of this obstruction is that the torsion becomes a new source for the metric curvature, and even if the scalar field is very slowly varying over cosmic scales as to have no observable astronomical efects at the galactic scale, it has important dynamical efects that can give rise to a cosmological evolution radically diferent from the standard FRWL model.

Chern-Simons Forms in Gravitation Theories

The Chern-Simons (CS) form evolved from an obstruction in mathematics into an important object in theoretical physics. In fact, the presence of CS terms in physics is more common than one may think: they seem to play an important role in high Tc superconductivity and in recently discovered topological insulators. In classical physics, the minimal coupling in electromagnetism and to the action for a mechanical system in Hamiltonian form are examples of CS functionals. CS forms are also the natural generalization of the minimal coupling between the electromagnetic field and a point charge when the source is not point-like but an extended fundamental object, a membrane. They are found in relation with anomalies in quantum field theories, and as Lagrangians for gauge fields, including gravity and supergravity. A cursory review of the role of CS forms in gravitation theories is presented at an introductory level.

Gribov copies, BRST-exactness and Chern-Simons theory

The path integral approach for a 3D Chern-Simons theory is discussed with a focus on the question of metric independence and BRST-exactness in the light of Gribov ambiguity. Copies of the vacuum satisfying the strong boundary conditions and with trivial winding number are shown to exist. This problem is relevant for Yang-Mills theory in 2+1 dimensions as well. Furthermore, it is also shown that there are regular background metrics supporting an infinite number of zero modes of the Abelian Faddeev-Popov operator in the Coulomb gauge. In order to avoid overcounting one could restrict the possible metrics which enter in the gauge fixing but this would imply that, at a quantum level, three-dimensional Chern-Simons theories do depend on the metric.

Optical Properties of a θ-Vacuum

Chern-Simons (CS) forms generalize the minimal coupling between gauge potentials and point charges, to sources represented by charged extended objects (branes). The simplest example of such a CS-brane coupling is a domain wall coupled to the electromagnetic CS three-form. This describes a topologically charged interface where the CS form AdA is supported, separating two three-dimensional spatial regions in 3+1 spacetime. Electrodynamics at either side of the brane is described by the same Maxwell's equations, but those two regions have different vacua, characterized by a different value of the θ-parameter multiplying the Pontryagin form F ^ F. The θ-term is the abelian version of the concept introduced by 't Hooft for the resolution of the U(1) problem in QCD. We point out that CS-generalized classical electrodynamics shows new phenomena when two neighboring regions with different θ-vacua are present. These topological effects result from surface effects induced by the boundary and we explore the consequences of such boundary effects for the propagation of the electromagnetic field in Maxwell theory. Several features, including optical and electrostatic/magnetostatic responses, which may be observable in condensed matter systems, like topological insulators, are discussed.

Quantum Degenerate Systems

Degenerate dynamical systems are characterized by symplectic structures whose rank is not constant throughout phase space. Their phase spaces are divided into causally disconnected, nonoverlapping regions such that there are no classical orbits connecting two different regions. Here the question of whether this classical disconnectedness survives quantization is addressed. Our conclusion is that in irreducible degenerate systems --in which the degeneracy cannot be eliminated by redefining variables in the action--, the disconnectedness is maintained in the quantum theory: there is no quantum tunnelling across degeneracy surfaces. This shows that the degeneracy surfaces are boundaries separating distinct physical systems, not only classically, but in the quantum realm as well. The relevance of this feature for gravitation and Chern-Simons theories in higher dimensions cannot be overstated.

Reflections on Cosmology: an Outsider's Point of View

Some of the assumptions of cosmology, as based on the simplest version of General Relativity, are discussed. It is argued that by slight modifications of standard gravitation theory, our notion of the sources of gravity {the right hand side of Einstein's equations{, could be something radically different from what is usually expected. One example is exhibited to prove the point, and some consequences are discussed.

Supersymmetry of a different kind

A local supersymmetric action for a (2+1)-dimensional system including gravity, the electromagnetic field and a Dirac spin-1/2 field is presented. The action is a Chern-Simons form for a connection of the OSp(2|2) group. All the fields enter as parts of the connection, that transforms in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. The system is off-shell invariant under local (gauge) supersymmetry. Although the supersymmetry is locally realized, there is no spin-3/2 gravitino, and is therefore not supergravity. The fields do not necessarily form supersymmetric doublets of equal mass, and moreover, the fermion may acquire mass through the coupling with the background geometry, while the bosons --the U(1) field and the spin connection-- remain massless.

Geometry and stability of spinning branes in AdS gravity

The geometry of spinning codimension-two branes in AdS spacetime is analyzed in three and higher dimensions. The construction of non-extremal solutions is based on identifications in the covering of AdS space by isometries that have fixed points. The discussion focuses on the cases where the parameters of spinning states can be related to the velocity of a boosted static codimension-two brane. The resulting configuration describes a single spinning brane, or a set of intersecting branes, each one produced by an independent identification. The nature of the singularity is also examined, establishing that the AdS curvature acquires one in the form of a Dirac delta distribution. The stability of the branes is studied in the framework of Chern-Simons AdS supergravity. A class of branes, characterized by one free parameter, are shown to be stable when the BPS conditions are satisfied. In 3D, these stable branes are extremal, while in higher dimensions, the BPS branes are not the extremal ones.

Theta term in a bounded region

We analyse the physical implications of adding a topological density term $θTr(F\wedge F)$ to a gauge theory in a bounded region. In particular, we calculate the Casimir effect on a spherical region and we show that the result is not periodic in $θ$, contrary to what would be expected for a true topological density. The topological nature of the $θ$-term can be restored if an additional boundary term required by the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer theorem is included. Then, the periodicity is trivially restored because the resulting Casimir energy is independent of $θ$. The results of the present work suggest that the observable effects of the $θ$-term could be very small even without assuming $θ$ itself to be small.

Naked Singularities, Topological Defects and Brane Couplings

A conical defect in (2+1) anti-de Sitter space is a BTZ solution with a negative mass parameter. This is a naked singularity, but a rather harmless one: it is a point particle. Naturally, the energy density and the spacetime curvature have a delta-like singularity at the apex of the conical defect, but that doesn't give rise to any unphysical situations. Since the conical solution implies the presence of a source, applying reverse enginnering, one can identify the coupling term that is required in the action to account for that source. In that way, a relation is established between the identification operation that gives rise to the topological defect and the interaction term in the action that produces it. This idea has a natural extension to higher dimensions, where instead of a point particle (zero-brane) one finds membranes of even spatial dimensions (p-branes, with p=2n). The generalization to other abelian and nonabelian gauge theories --including (super-) gravities-- is fairly straightforward: the 2n-brane couple to a (2n+1) Chern-Simons form. The construction suggests a generic role for Chern-Simons forms as the natural way to couple a gauge connection to a brane and avoids the inconsistency that results from the minimal coupling between a brane and a fundamental p-form field.

Stable p-branes in Chern-Simons AdS supergravities

We construct static codimension-two branes in any odd dimension D, with negative cosmological constant, and show that they are exact solutions of Chern-Simons (super)gravity theory for (super)AdS coupled to external sources. The stability of these solutions is analyzed by counting the number of preserved supersymmetries. It is shown that static massive (D-3)-branes are unstable unless some suitable gauge fields are added and the brane is extremal. In particular, in three dimensions, a 0-brane is recognized as the negative mass counterpart of the BTZ black hole. For these 0-branes, we write explicitly electromagnetically charged BPS states with various number of preserved supersymmetries within the OSp(p|2) x OSp(q|2) supergroups. In five dimensions, we prove that stable 2-branes with electromagnetic charge always exist for the generic supergroup SU(2,2|N), where N is different than 4. For the special case N=4, in which the CS supergravity requires the addition of a nontrivial gauge field configuration in order to preserve maximal number of degrees of freedom, we show for two different static 2-branes that they are BPS states (one of which is the ground state), and from the corresponding algebra of charges we show that the energy is bounded from below. In higher dimensions, our results admit a straightforward generalization, although there are presumably more solutions corresponding to different intersections of the elementary objects.

Sources for Chern-Simons theories

The coupling between Chern-Simons theories and matter sources defined by branes of different dimensionalities is examined. It is shown that the standard coupling to membranes, such as the one found in supergravity or in string theory, does not operate in the same way for CS theories; the only p-branes that naturally couple seem to be those with p=2n; these p-branes break the gauge symmetry (and supersymmetry) in a controlled and sensible manner.

(Super-)Gravities of a different sort

We review the often forgotten fact that gravitation theories invariant under local de Sitter, anti-de Sitter or Poincare transformations can be constructed in all odd dimensions. These theories belong to the Chern-Simons family and are particular cases of the so-called Lovelock gravities, constructed as the dimensional continuations of the lower dimensional Euler classes. The supersymmetric extensions of these theories exist for the AdS and Poincare groups, and the fields are components of a single connection for the corresponding Lie algebras. In 11 dimensions these supersymmetric theories are gauge theories for the osp(1|32) and the M algebra, respectively. The relation between these new supergravities and the standard theories, as well as some of their dynamical features are also discussed.

Lie-algebra expansions, Chern-Simons theories and the Einstein-Hilbert lagrangian

Starting from gravity as a Chern-Simons action for the AdS algebra in five dimensions, it is possible to deform the theory through an expansion of the Lie algebra that leads to a system consisting of the Einstein-Hilbert action plus nonminimally coupled matter. The deformed system is gauge invariant under the Poincare group enlarged by an Abelian ideal. Although the resulting action naively looks like General Relativity plus corrections due to matter sources, it is shown that the nonminimal couplings produce a radical departure from GR. Indeed, the dynamics is not continuously connected to the one obtained from Einstein-Hilbert action. In a matter-free configuration and in the torsionless sector, the field equations are too strong a restriction on the geometry as the metric must satisfy both the Einstein and pure Gauss-Bonnet equations. In particular, the five-dimensional Schwarzschild geometry fails to be a solution; however, configurations corresponding to a brane-world with positive cosmological constant on the worldsheet are admissible when one of the matter fields is switched on. These results can be extended to higher odd dimensions.

Stealth Scalar Field Overflying a 2+1 Black Hole

A nontrivial scalar field configuration of vanishing energy-momentum is reported. These matter configurations have no influence on the metric and therefore they are not be "detected" gravitationally. This phenomenon occurs for a time-dependent nonminimally coupled and self-interacting scalar field on the 2+1 (BTZ) black hole geometry. We conclude that such stealth configurations exist for the static 2+1 black hole for any value of the nonminimal coupling parameter $ζ\neq0$ with a fixed self-interaction potential $U_ζ(Φ)$. For the range $0<ζ\leq1/2$ potentials are bounded from below and for the range $0<ζ<1/4$ the stealth field falls into the black hole and is swallowed by it at an exponential rate, without any consequence for the black hole.

Chern-Simons Supergravities with Off-Shell Local Superalgebras

A new family of supergravity theories in odd dimensions is presented. The Lagrangian densities are Chern-Simons forms for the connection of a supersymmetric extension of the anti-de Sitter algebra. The superalgebras are the supersymmetric extensions of the AdS algebra for each dimension, thus completing the analysis of van Holten and Van Proeyen, which was valid for N=1 and for D=2,3,4,mod 8. The Chern-Simons form of the Lagrangian ensures invariance under the gauge supergroup by construction and, in particular, under local supersymmetry. Thus, unlike standard supergravity, the local supersymmetry algebra closes off-shell and without requiring auxiliary fields. The Lagrangian is explicitly given for D=5, 7 and 11. In all cases the dynamical field content includes the vielbein, the spin connection, N gravitini, and some extra bosonic ``matter'' fields which vary from one dimension to another. The superalgebras fall into three families: osp(m|N) for D=2,3,4, mod 8, osp(N|m) for D=6,7,8, mod 8, and su(m-2,2|N) for D=5 mod 4, with m=2^{[D/2]}. The possible connection between the D=11 case and M-Theory is also discussed.

Conserved charges for gravity with locally AdS asymptotics

A new formula for the conserved charges in 3+1 gravity for spacetimes with local AdS asymptotic geometry is proposed. It is shown that requiring the action to have an extremum for this class of asymptotia sets the boundary term that must be added to the Lagrangian as the Euler density with a fixed weight factor. The resulting action gives rise to the mass and angular momentum as Noether charges associated to the asymptotic Killing vectors without requiring specification of a reference background in order to have a convergent expression. A consequence of this definition is that any negative constant curvature spacetime has vanishing Noether charges. These results remain valid in the limit of vanishing cosmological constant.

Gauge Supergravities for all Odd Dimensions

Recently proposed supergravity theories in odd dimensions whose fields are connection one-forms for the minimal supersymmetric extensions of anti-de Sitter gravity are discussed. Two essential ingredients are required for this construction: (1) The superalgebras, which extend the adS algebra for different dimensions, and (2) the lagrangians, which are Chern-Simons $(2n-1)$-forms. The first item completes the analysis of van Holten and Van Proeyen, which was valid for N=1 only. The second ensures that the actions are invariant by construction under the gauge supergroup and, in particular, under local supersymmetry. Thus, unlike standard supergravity, the local supersymmetry algebra closes off-shell and without requiring auxiliary fields. \\ The superalgebras are constructed for all dimensions and they fall into three families: $osp(m|N)$ for $D=2,3,4$, mod 8, $osp(N|m)$ for $D=6,7,8$, mod 8, and $su(m-2,2|N)$ for D=5 mod 4, with $m=2^{[D/2]}$. The lagrangian is constructed for $D=5, 7$ and 11. In all cases the field content includes the vielbein ($e_μ^{a}$), the spin connection ($ω_μ^{ab}$), $N$ gravitini ($ψ_μ^{i}$), and some extra bosonic "matter" fields which vary from one dimension to another.

Supersymmetric Particle in a Spacetime with Torsion and the Index Theorem

The supersymmetric Lagrangian compatible with the presence of torsion in the background spacetime requires, in addition to the minimal coupling, an interaction between the spin and the torsion of the form ${1/2} N_{μνλρ}ψ^μψ^νψ^λψ^ρ$, where $N$ is the Nieh-Yan 4-form. This gives rise to a coupling between helicity ($h$) and the Nieh-Yan density of the form $hN$. The classical Lagrangian allows computing the index for the Dirac operator on a four-dimensional compact manifold with curvature and torsion using the path integral representation for the index. This calculation provides an independent check for the recent result of the chiral anomaly in spaces with torsion.

Topological Invariants, Instantons and Chiral Anomaly on Spaces with Torsion

In a spacetime with nonvanishing torsion there can occur topologically stable configurations associated with the frame bundle which are independent of the curvature. The relevant topological invariants are integrals of local scalar densities first discussed by Nieh and Yan (N-Y). In four dimensions, the N-Y form $N= (T^a \wedge T_a - R_{ab} \wedge e^a \wedge e^b)$ is the only closed 4-form invariant under local Lorentz rotations associated with the torsion of the manifold. The integral of $N$ over a compact D-dimensional (Euclidean) manifold is shown to be a topological invariant related to the Pontryagin classes of SO(D+1) and SO(D). An explicit example of a topologically nontrivial configuration carrying nonvanishing instanton number proportional to $\int N$ is costructed. The chiral anomaly in a four-dimensional spacetime with torsion is also shown to contain a contribution proportional to $N$, besides the usual Pontryagin density related to the spacetime curvature. The violation of chiral symmetry can thus depend on the instanton number of the tangent frame bundle of the manifold. Similar invariants can be constructed in D>4 dimensions and the existence of the corresponding nontrivial excitations is also discussed.

Conformally dressed black hole in 2+1 dimensions

A three dimensional black hole solution of Einstein equations with negative cosmological constant coupled to a conformal scalar field is given. The solution is static, circularly symmetric, asymptotically anti-de Sitter and nonperturbative in the conformal field. The curvature tensor is singular at the origin while the scalar field is regular everywhere. The condition that the Euclidean geometry be regular at the horizon fixes the temperature to be $T=\frac{9\, r_+}{16πl^2}$. Using the Hamiltonian formulation including boundary terms of the Euclidean action, the entropy is found to be $\frac{2}{3}$ of the standard value ($\frac{1}{4} A$), and in agreement with the first law of thermodynamics.

Stellar Equilibrium in 2+1 Dimensions

The hydrostatic equilibrium of a $2+1$ dimensional perfect fluid star in asymptotically anti-de Sitter space is discussed. The interior geometry matches the exterior $2+1$ black-hole solution. An upper mass limit is found, analogous to Buchdahl's theorem in 3+1, and the possibility of collapse is discussed. The case of a uniform matter density is solved exactly and a new interior solution is presented.
