Cycles, derived categories, and rationality

Our main goal is to give a sense of recent developments in the (stable) rationality problem from the point of view of unramified cohomology and 0-cycles as well as derived categories and semiorthogonal decompositions, and how these perspectives intertwine and reflect each other. In particular, in the case of algebraic surfaces, we explain the relationship between Bloch's conjecture, Chow-theoretic decompositions of the diagonal, categorical representability, and the existence of phantom subcategories of the derived category.

Homological Projective Duality for Determinantal Varieties

In this paper we prove Homological Projective Duality for crepant categorical resolutions of several classes of linear determinantal varieties. By this we mean varieties that are cut out by the minors of a given rank of a n x m matrix of linear forms on a given projective space. As applications, we obtain pairs of derived-equivalent Calabi-Yau manifolds, and address a question by A. Bondal asking whether the derived category of any smooth projective variety can be fully faithfully embedded in the derived category of a smooth Fano variety. Moreover we discuss the relation between rationality and categorical representability in codimension two for determinantal varieties.

Chow groups of intersections of quadrics via homological projective duality and (Jacobians of) noncommutative motives

The Beilinson-Bloch type conjectures predict that the low degree rational Chow groups of intersections of quadrics are one dimensional. This conjecture was proved by Otwinowska. Making use of homological projective duality and the recent theory of (Jacobians of) noncommutative Chow motives, we give an alternative proof of this conjecture in the case of a complete intersection of either two quadrics or three odd-dimensional quadrics. Moreover, without the use of the powerful Lefschetz theorem, we prove that in these cases the unique non-trivial algebraic Jacobian is the middle one. As an application, making use of Vial's work, we describe the rational Chow motives of these complete intersections and show that smooth fibrations in such complete intersections over small dimensional bases S verify Murre's conjecture (dim(S) less or equal to 1), Grothendieck's standard conjectures (dim(S) less of equal to 2), and Hodge's conjecture (dim(S) less or equal to 3).

Semiorthogonal decompositions and birational geometry of del Pezzo surfaces over arbitrary fields

We study the birational properties of geometrically rational surfaces from a derived categorical point of view. In particular, we give a criterion for the rationality of a del Pezzo surface over an arbitrary field, namely, that its derived category decomposes into zero-dimensional components. For del Pezzo surfaces of degree at least 5, we construct explicit semiorthogonal decompositions by subcategories of modules over semisimple algebras arising as endomorphism algebras of vector bundles and we show how to retrieve information about the index of the surface from Brauer classes and Chern classes associated to these vector bundles.

Cubic fourfolds containing a plane and a quintic del Pezzo surface

We isolate a class of smooth rational cubic fourfolds X containing a plane whose associated quadric surface bundle does not have a rational section. This is equivalent to the nontriviality of the Brauer class of the even Clifford algebra over the K3 surface S of degree 2 arising from X. Specifically, we show that in the moduli space of cubic fourfolds, the intersection of divisors C_8 and C_14 has five irreducible components. In the component corresponding to the existence of a tangent conic to the sextic degeneration curve of the quadric bundle, we prove that the general member is both pfaffian and has nontrivial Brauer class. Such cubic fourfolds also provide twisted derived equivalences between K3 surfaces of degree 2 and 14, hence further corroboration of Kuznetsov's derived categorical conjecture on the rationality of cubic fourfolds.

From semi-orthogonal decompositions to polarized intermediate Jacobians via Jacobians of noncommutative motives

Let X and Y be complex smooth projective varieties, and D^b(X) and D^b(Y) the associated bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves. Assume the existence of a triangulated category T which is admissible both in D^b(X) as in D^b(Y). Making use of the recent theory of Jacobians of noncommutative motives, we construct out of this categorical data a morphism t of abelian varieties (up to isogeny) from the product of the intermediate algebraic Jacobians of X to the product of the intermediate algebraic Jacobians of Y. When the orthogonal complement of T in D^b(X) has a trivial Jacobian (e.g. when it is generated by exceptional objects), the morphism t is split injective. When this also holds for the orthogonal complement of T in D^b(Y), t becomes an isomorphism. Furthermore, in the case where X and Y have a single intermediate algebraic Jacobian carrying a principal polarization, we prove that the morphism t preserves this extra structure. As an application, we obtain categorical Torelli theorems, an incompatibility between two conjectures of Kuznetsov (one concerning Fourier-Mukai functors and another one concerning Fano threefolds), a new proof of a classical theorem of Clemens-Griffiths on blow-ups of threefolds, and several new results on quadric fibrations and intersection of quadrics.

Some remarks concerning Voevodsky's nilpotence conjecture

In this note we extend Voevodsky's nilpotence conjecture from smooth projective schemes to the broader setting of smooth proper dg categories. Making use of this noncommutative generalization, we then address Voevodsky's original conjecture in the following cases: quadric fibrations, intersection of quadrics, linear sections of Grassmannians, linear sections of determinantal varieties, homological projective duals, and Moishezon manifolds.

Additive invariants of finite dimensional algebras of finite global dimension

Let k be a perfect field and A a finite dimensional k-algebra of finite global dimension (e.g. the path algebra of a finite quiver without oriented cycles). Making use of the recent theory of noncommutative motives, we prove that the value of every additive invariant at A only depends on the number of simple modules. Examples of additive invariants include algebraic K-theory, cyclic homology (and all its variants), topological Hochschild homology, etc. Along the way we establish two results of general interest. The first one concerns the compatibility between bilinear pairings and Galois actions on the Grothendieck group of every proper dg category. The second one is a transfer result in the setting of noncommutative motives.

Fibrations in complete intersections of quadrics, Clifford algebras, derived categories, and rationality problems

Let X -> Y be a fibration whose fibers are complete intersections of two quadrics. We develop new categorical and algebraic tools---a theory of relative homological projective duality and the Morita invariance of the even Clifford algebra under quadric reduction by hyperbolic splitting---to study semiorthogonal decompositions of the bounded derived category of X. Together with new results in the theory of quadratic forms, we apply these tools in the case where X -> Y has relative dimension 1, 2, or 3, in which case the fibers are curves of genus 1, Del Pezzo surfaces of degree 4, or Fano threefolds, respectively. In the latter two cases, if Y is the projective line over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, we relate rationality questions to categorical representability of X.

preprint2012arXiv

Derived categories and rationality of conic bundles

We show that a standard conic bundle over a minimal rational surface is rational and its Jacobian splits as the direct sum of Jacobians of curves if and only if its derived category admits a semiorthogonal decomposition by exceptional objects and the derived categories of those curves. Moreover, such a decomposition gives the splitting of the intermediate Jacobian also when the surface is not minimal.

Categorical representability and intermediate Jacobians of Fano threefolds

We define, basing upon semiorthogonal decompositions of $\Db(X)$, categorical representability of a projective variety $X$ and describe its relation with classical representabilities of the Chow ring. For complex threefolds satisfying both classical and categorical representability assumptions, we reconstruct the intermediate Jacobian from the semiorthogonal decomposition. We discuss finally how categorical representability can give useful information on the birational properties of $X$ by providing examples and stating open questions.

Stable pairs on elliptic K3 surfaces

We study semistable pairs on elliptic K3 surfaces with a section: we construct a family of moduli spaces of pairs, related by wall crossing phenomena, which can be studied to describe the birational correspondence between moduli spaces of sheaves of rank 2 and Hilbert schemes on the surface. In the 4-dimensional case, this can be used to get the isomorphism between the moduli space and the Hilbert scheme described by Friedman.

The Euclid-Fourier-Mukai algorithm for elliptic surfaces

We describe the birational correspondences, induced by the Fourier-Mukai functor, between moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on elliptic surfaces with sections, using the notion of $P$-stability in the derived category. We give explicit conditions to determine whether these correspondences are isomorphisms. This is indeed not true in general and we describe the cases where the birational maps are Mukai flops. Moreover, this construction provides examples of new compactifications of the moduli spaces of vector bundles via sheaves with torsion and via complexes. We finally get for any fixed dimension an isomorphism between the Picard groups of the moduli spaces.
